CHAP 5b: IC - Boxing Fundamentals

Post by Job »

Boxing Fundamentals Class wrote:Enke Fiskarson takes a team out to the main deck to begin his "Boxing Fundamentals" class, first reviewing the rules of boxing, then proceeding on with stretching and limbering exercises, and finishing with demonstrations and practice. He splits the various participants according to their weight, and then proceeds with teaching the basics of stance, jabs and blocks. This boxing class is very popular, even if some choose to watch rather than participate. James Starkweather was seen observing the class from a balcony above, with a characteristic grin on his face, and shouted, "Fight, lads, fight! You'll soon have me to contend with!"

The pairings for a total of four bouts was interesting:
 1. Enke Fiskarson (dog wrangler), a bear of a man, versus Hidalgo Cruz (camp crew worker), who is a veritable mountain of a man, even taller than Fiskarson. This will be a tough battle!
 2. Gregor Pulaski (sled team member), a big happy Pole versus Gunnar Sorensen (mountaineer), a pale Norwegian, happy and energetic. They look evenly matched.
 3. Nils Sorensen, older brother of Gunnar, pale like his brother but much quieter and somewhat taller, versus Charles Myers (archaeologist), a tall, strong man in athletic trim.
 4. Tommy Lopez (camp crew worker), a young strong likable worker, versus our own Oyvind Raknes.
This event drew a sizeable gathering on deck.

The first match was Nils Sorensen and Charles Myers. Nils was much stronger than Charles, and every punch that he landed could be heard with a sharp "Crack!" across the main deck, but Charles was a better boxer and landed many more punches. After the first round, as they each headed for their own corners to rest, Charles was walking with a grimace but Nils' lip and nose were bleeding profusely.

The second round ended quickly, though, as Nils swung a mighty punch and that caught Charles directly on the chin, sending him sprawling to the deck. Charles was able to stand after a six-second count, but Doctor Greene looked into his eyes and waved off the fight. "Easy, boys! We're not here to kill each other. Charles cannot continue." Nils rarely shows emotion, but it appears to you that he might actually be sneering, albeit underneath a much-bloodied face.

Next up, Enke calls for Tommy Lopez and Øyvind to square off!

While awaiting the start of the match, Tommy warms up by bouncing on his toes and windmilling his arms. The onlookers seem to be passing money amongst themselves...

Øyvind ducked Tommy's opening jab, then the two boxers moved and threw tentative punches for a while, trying to measure their opponent. Getting serious, Tommy ducked and lurched in, throwing a quick roundhouse, trying to catch Øyvind off guard, but Øyvind was ready and nailed him right on the forehead, sending Tommy reeling backwards. Øyvind moved forward to take advantage, hit him again with a quick right cross, but thereafter Tommy covered up and did his best to stay out of reach until he recovered a bit.

Øyvind and Tommy then clashed in the middle of the ring, trading short-range blows, but almost all were blocked by each opponent with their forearms and shoulders. This part of the fight was a standoff.

After separating and circling for a few moments, Øyvind jabbed left and followed with an hard right hand, but Tommy stepped under the punch and caught Øyvind with two solid body shots, followed by a punishing uppercut. Øyvind was knocked back just as the bell went off to end the round.

James Starkweather, observing from the upper deck balcony and serving as judge, called it even: one point for Øyvind and one point for Tommy.

Ding! The bell rang and the two fighters approached the center of the ring.

Øyvind moved slowly towards Tommy holding his guard up inviting Tommy to take the initiative, Tommy launched a jab but Øyvind was prepared and blocked it with his shoulder he did never se the lightining second punch going for his stomach. Thump! Øyvind crinched with the hit. Øyvind saw that Tommy paused for a second at his successful hit launching a straight punch at his head. Thump! Øyvind hit him over the ear, making Tommy back up.

Ding! The round was over

"Ding!" The third round began much like the second, both boxers moving towards the middle of the ring and Øyvind holding both arms up to block, inviting Tommy to move in and be the aggressor.

Tommy did not disappoint. He moved in quickly and began throwing roundhouse punches that were intended to hit Øyvind in the body, but these seemed to be easily blocked by Øyvind and the tall Norwegian counterpunched, catching Tommy directly in the jaw with a straight right hand, snapping Tommy's head back. Tommy stumbled, putting both hands on the deck to keep aright, and then somehow ducked a number of powerful blows from Øyvind that would've surely put him down.

Tommy went on defense for at least a minute, staying out of Øyvind's reach when he could, and blocking whatever punches came close. It appeared that Øyvind was tiring a little from the chase, his breathing becoming labored, and he threw fewer punches. Tommy smiled, then darted towards Øyvind and threw a left, but Øyvind stepped back to avoid it and, at the same time, pivoted and slammed a short, straight left into Tommy's chin. Tommy knees buckled, and a moment later, he went down, toppling over on his side!

Dr. Greene quickly stepped in, waved his arms, and yelled, "No more! Øyvind's the winner!" The onlookers all jumped and shouted in excitement, rushing in to slap Øyvind on the back as the doctor kneeled over Tommy.

From his balcony above, James Starkweather could be heard laughing and then exclaimed, "Good show! Well done Øyvind!"

The next bout pitted Gregor Pulaski against Gunnar Sorensen.
Image On the left, Gregor Pulaski, dog wrangler (and self-acclaimed seal wrangler)

Image On the left, Gunnar Sorensen, polar guide (one of the Sorensen brothers)

Gunnar started agressively, running immediately at Gregor and throwing numerous hard punches. Gregor did his best to fend off the punches, ducking and blocking many, but enough landed that Gregor stumbled back into the surrounding onlookers, who whooped and caught him, then shoved him back towards Gunnar. Seeing that Gregor was off balance, Gunnar swung a powerful haymaker at him, but Gunnar missed wildly and fell off balance himself, stumbling directly into Gregor and causing both fighters to fall to the deck in a heap. The crowd was yelling, loving the action, but Gunnar yelled even louder as he grabbed his hand and clenched his teeth in pain, rolling over, and then jumping to his feet. He had obviously hurt his hand in the fall.

Doctor Greene quickly moved in to examine Gunnar's hand, but Gunnar shook his head and insisted that he allow the fight to continue. "OK, then, Fight!", shouted Doctor Green, to restart the battle.

Gunnar was protecting his injured hand, holding it against his chest. Gregor circled, attempting to take advantage, but unfortunately for Gregor, Gunnar predicted his next move and stepped across throwing a hard punch with his good hand, catching Gregor full on the side of his face and dropping him to the deck. Gregor tried to stand, but Gunnar moved in before the doctor could stop him and hit him twice more. The fight was over.

The fourth bout had Enke Fiskarson fighting against Hidalgo Cruz, both large men.

Image On the left, Enke Fiskarson, boxing instructor and dog wrangler.

Image On the left, Hidalgo Cruz, camp crew worker

The fight started slowly. Enke and Hidalgo pawed at each other for a long minute, but didn't really do any damage. The crowd became impatient and started booing, causing both fighters to smile and laugh. Then both fighters came together in a clash, wrestling and pushing, each occasionally slamming a fist into the side of the other. This furious shoving and elbowing continued through the end of the round.

The second round was very similar to the first and by the end of it, Enke was noticeably tiring while Hidalgo seemed to be less winded, but the third round was much more interesting as both men began slamming punches into each other with grunts of exertion that surely foretold bruises on the next day. After trading blows for some time, Enke appeared to be getting the best of Hidalgo. but when Doctor Greene ended the round, James Starkweather called the fight in favor of Hidalgo. This silenced the onlookers, who gazed in quiet disbelief at their commander.

All first round matches were now over and to start the second round, Øyvind was to fight Gunnar Sorensen.

Gunnar and Øyvind squared off on the main deck with Doctor Greene once again refereeing.

Gunnar, ever the playful crew member, was laughing and swiveling his hips as he said, "Vår tur til å danse, eh Øyvind?"

When the fight began, Gunnar cautiously circled Øyvind for a time, jabbing with his left hand. Both Øyvind and Gunnar were unable to land many punches initially, but as Øyvind moved in to attack during the middle of the round, Gunnar caught him flush on the chin with a left hook and the punch seemed to have hurt Øyvind. Gunnar failed to take further advantage though, as he held his right hand close to his chest and Øyvind continually ducked his opponent's left-handed attempts.

"Ding!", and the round was over.

Response from Job,This is not at all a problem, Anatomist. Don't ever be concerned about asking questions. Oyvind is now in his second round versus Gunnar and I've already made my 3 rolls for Gunnar's punches. Here is a link to Gunnar's rolls. All 3 of Gunnar's punches landed. Please roll 3d100's for Oyvind to match against Gunnar's.

If Oyvind lands all 3 punches, then they cancel all 3 of Gunnar's punches and therefore neither character lands a punch.
If Oyvind lands 2 punches, then 1 of Gunnar's punches hits him.
If Oyvind lands only 1 punch, then 2 of Gunnar's punches hit Oyvind
If none of Oyvind's punches land, then all 3 of Gunnar's punches hit Oyvind.
Whoever hits with more punches during the round gets to describe the action for the round.

Pictured above, Gunnar Sorensen (with an appropriately condescending look)

The second round of the boxing match between Gunnar Sorensen and Øyvind began slowly with both fighters showing some distress. Øyvind was looking a little shaky after taking the greater damage during the first round and Gunnar continued to protect his obviously-injured hand. Gunnar had a predatory look about him, though, and he was obviously sizing up Øyvind to see if he could find an opening to knock him out.

After about 30 seconds, Gunnar and Øyvind came together in a brutal clash, each landing furious blows to the other, each showing some swelling about their face. They parted and slowed the pace somewhat, each fighter breathing hard. Towards the end of the round Øyvind threw a straight left hand punch that Gunnar neatly countered, following with a hard roundhouse punch to Øyvind's kidney, landing with a resounding "Thwack!" that forced a groan from Øyvind. But Øyvind absorbed the punch and appeared to shrug it off.

Dr. Green rang the bell, "Ding!", and the round ended.

In between rounds, Doctor Greene examined both fighters and asked if they were OK to proceed. Gunnar nodded and forced a smile, showing a touch of scarlet on his teeth.

Both fighters stood and touched gloves to start the third round as Doctor Greene opened the fighting with his usual, "Aaaannd... FIGHT!"

Gunnar and Øyvind began by pawing at each other and grappling before Greene eventually forced the two apart. Then Gunnar and Øyvind exchanged jabs, but Gunnar was only snapping off punches with his sole uninjured left hand. Øyvind blocked most of these and returned with his own jabs but in a surprise move, Gunnar ducked one, darted in, and threw a nasty uppercut that cleanly landed on Øyvind's jaw, sending Øyvind staggering back and falling to one knee. Øyvind shook his head as he remained down, blinking, and a moment later Doctor Greene stepped in and waved off Gunnar so that he could examine Øyvind. Greene then waved his arms, signalling the end of the fight, and clapped Øyvind on the back, saying into his ear, "You'll get him next time, lad!"
