Boxing Fundamentals Class wrote:Enke Fiskarson takes a team out to the main deck to begin his "Boxing Fundamentals" class, first reviewing the rules of boxing, then proceeding on with stretching and limbering exercises, and finishing with demonstrations and practice. He splits the various participants according to their weight, and then proceeds with teaching the basics of stance, jabs and blocks. This boxing class is very popular, even if some choose to watch rather than participate. James Starkweather was seen observing the class from a balcony above, with a characteristic grin on his face, and shouted, "Fight, lads, fight! You'll soon have me to contend with!"

The pairings for a total of four bouts was interesting:
- Enke Fiskarson (dog wrangler), a bear of a man, versus Hidalgo Cruz (camp crew worker), who is a veritable mountain of a man, even taller than Fiskarson. This will be a tough battle!
- Gregor Pulaski (sled team member), a big happy Pole versus Gunnar Sorensen (mountaineer), a pale Norwegian, happy and energetic. They look evenly matched.
- Nils Sorensen, older brother of Gunnar, pale like his brother but much quieter and somewhat taller, versus Charles Myers (archaeologist), a tall, strong man in athletic trim.
- Tommy Lopez (camp crew worker), a young strong likable worker, versus our own Oyvind Raknes.
The first match was Nils Sorensen and Charles Myers. Nils was much stronger than Charles, and every punch that he landed could be heard with a sharp "Crack!" across the main deck, but Charles was a better boxer and landed many more punches. After the first round, as they each headed for their own corners to rest, Charles was walking with a grimace but Nils' lip and nose were bleeding profusely.
The second round ended quickly, though, as Nils swung a mighty punch and that caught Charles directly on the chin, sending him sprawling to the deck. Charles was able to stand after a six-second count, but Doctor Greene looked into his eyes and waved off the fight. "Easy, boys! We're not here to kill each other. Charles cannot continue." Nils rarely shows emotion, but it appears to you that he might actually be sneering, albeit underneath a much-bloodied face.
Above is a picture of Nils Sorensen, without the blood.
Next up, Enke calls for Tommy Lopez and Øyvind to square off!
