Anthony DeCarlo - Private Eye - At your service

It is Tuesday, 10th of April 1923, you are sitting at your desk. It’s been 2 months exactly since you were released from the Deer Harbor Prison in Boston. You have decided that, this time, you will be on the right side of law. But while deciding to give it all up is easy, actually keeping on the straight and narrow is difficult. You have a little money which you got on your release. You have moved to Arkham and rented a one bedroom flat in the not-so-nice part of town which doubles as an office. Anthony DeCarlo, Private Investigator, the brass plate reads. And this is your new life.
The phone rings. As you answer, you hear a familiar voice “Tony? How have you been?” It’s father Griffin, the Irish prison chaplain. Although you were never that religious, the childhood comfort of Sunday Mass in Latin, receiving the Host and a few kind words from the priest, never judgeing you, were some of the things that kept you going and convinced you to look for a different life. “Listen, have you really set up shop as a private eye? Because if you have, I might have a job for you.”
He proceeds to tell you that one of his friends, Franklin Quincey, a wealthy collector of books on religion and the occult has been robbed. He does not want to involve the police, but he’d really like his book back. If you are interested, you could meet him the next evening in his flat in Arkham to hear the details. “I think he’s gonna pay really well. And you would be doing me a favour as well, he and I go way back.”

Anthony DeCarlo sits in the silence of his office/flat, wondering if this is all worth it. He has had little money since being released and, outside of a job following the wife of a man who suspected her of infidelity, he has had to make ends meet by toiling at menial labor on the Arkham docks, unloading crates of fish and other imports...

Suddenly, the phone rings and Anthony is greeted by a familiar voice...a godsend...

"Father, it's good to hear from you..." Anthony can barely contain his gratitude, sounding desperate as a result of both his loneliness and hard luck in this strange town.

After a short exchange of pleasantries and small talk, Father Griffin gets down to business...

"Sure...sure Father. I'll take the job. Besides, if its a favour to you, I owe you for what you've done for me while in the can...er...jail. I'll take down the address now..." Anthony scrambles for a pen and pad of paper. He resists the urge to inquire more, figuring he'll learn more tomorrow. Either way, he's relieved for a break...

After recording the address, Anthony thanks Griffin.

"Thanks Father for passing this along. I appreciate it. I'll do my best and it was good to hear from you."

After the call, Anthony breathes a sigh of relief..

Maybe things are turning around for me. Don't know what the deal is about this book but I'll be there to meet this Quincey...

Anthony wonders what he'll do with himself for the rest of the day and debates going for a drink at the speak-easy, all the while speculating what tomorrow will bring....

After the speak-easy, you decide to some detective work ("I'm a PI, so, I should be prepared for my visit"). He's a book collector, isn't he? Well, maybe he is known to people in the library at Miskatonic U. They have very, very many rare books on religion on the occult.
You get ready to go to the library at the university to find out more about Quincey.

You arrive at Miskatonic U.
Miskatonic U
Miskatonic U
The grey building is very big and a bit forbidding. It is also not your kind of place, but you don't care. You ask the porter and he indicates the way to the library. The library turns out to be huge room, more like 10 rooms, full of books from floor to ceiling. The windows are huge and light floods in. In the distance, you can see the trees lining the Miskatonic River. Next to the entrance door is a smaller door. It reads "Dr Henry Armitage, Chief Librarian". You pause for a moment, wondering if you should knock, when you hear a quiet but quite sharp "Can I help you?". You turn right and see a woman in her mid-twenties, with blonde hair sitting behind a desk. "Can I help you?" she repeats. You walk over to her and explain that you are looking for a man named Franklin Quincey and would like to learn more about him. You understand that he is collector of rare books and you wonder if he has ever been here and if she could tell you something about him
Spoiler:
. "We do not give information like this to other library users. How would you feel if someone came and asked about you Mr...?" she answers colly. "DeCarlo, Anthony DeCarlo. And your name is...?" She points to a small brass plaque "Frances McLane".
"I understand. It's just that..." you spot a sign saying "Newspaper section"
Spoiler:
idea roll, almost there, but I figure all libraries have a paper section and you would see signs http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/3438251/
. You turn back to Ms McLane and say "I would like to use the newspaper section, do you carry the Arkham Advertiser?" "Of course!" "Well, then I would like to see last year's editions."
You spend several hours
Spoiler:
and you find several articles in which Mr Quincey is mentioned. They are mainly around auctions of rare books, local benefactors of Arkham etc.
You learn that he is a bachelor, very wealthy and a well-respected collector and scholar in the areas of religion and the occult. There are no ill rumours surrounding him, he takes part in the social life of Arkham, supports charities and, although somewhat reclusive, he is by no means friendless or a hermit.

You feel there is nothing else you can do here anymore, so you leave the library. You still have a couple of hours, so you decide to have an early dinner (it is around 5 pm), and you make your way to Mr Quincey's to meet him at 8 pm sharp.

The building is in a very well-to-do neighbourhood. There is a security guard in the lobby. You walk up to the guard and state your business. He looks at you, calls Mr Quincey on an intercom and, after Mr Quincey has confirmed that he is, indeed, expecting you, hands you a key and tells you to take the lift to the fourth floor.

You ride to the fourth floor and knock on the door. Mr Quincey opens almost immediately. He gives you once over, makes sure you have come alone, steps aside and waves you in.

Keeper,Sorry I thought I was to meet him tomorrow night...I would not have hit the speak-easy then. Apparently, the liquor shots affected my brain LOL. Anyways, thanks for the nudge! :D
"Anthony DeCarlo, P.I. at your service....Mr. Quincey, nice to meet you. I assume Father Griffin told you about me considering the reception...."

Anthony scans Quincey's flat to spot anything unusual but observes nothing...

" So I'm to understand you're missing a rare book and want it recovered without the Feds involved..." Anthony removes a pencil and small note pad from his pocket to jot down info."Can you fill me in on the details?.....What happened, what the book contained...and any suspicions you may have as to who may be responsible..."

DeCarlo attempts to be professional but it is a suit he has yet to feel comfortable in....

During his initial questioning, DeCarlo attempts to get a read on the seemingly nervous patron but, despite sensing something, comes away with no insights...

Spoiler:
Actually, I was wrong, I had fastforwarded by one day. So, it is now the evening of the second day of your quest. Wednesday. :D
Your host is in his fourties, bearded, dressed in clothes that were fashionable 10 years ago. He wears thick-lensed glasses. He is intense and serious, but not unpleasant.

Quincey's flat is expensice and spacious. It is largely dominated by bookshelves, they cover every available wall, floor to ceiling. The flat is mostly chilly, only the study is heated by an open fire and well-lit. You can see a small card table with sherry and glasses. There is an oak desk scattered with papers, notes, books etc. There is a huge picture window leading onto the balcony. It is closed at the moment.

The shelves in the study house the pinnacles of his collection, you can see rare books on the occult (such as Beatus Methoddivo, The Zohar, the Golden Bough).
You can also see a large painting above the oak desk. It is quite macabre: It shows a number of dog-faced humanoids standing in a graveyard and howling at a sickly-looking full moon. You look at it more closely and see the signature R Pickman.
"Ah yes, I am very proud of this piece, it is called 'Ghouls Howling', it was an impulse purchase a few years back at an auction I attended to buy rare books. Pickman is very sought after these days. Naturally, as he has vanished..." [he trails off]. He looks at you and says: "But of course, we're here to conduct business, let me tell you the story, then we can talk about a price:
This room contains the cream of my collection -
some of the most valuable and rare occult tomes in
existence. I am not a jealous man, and have always
made my collection available to fellow students of
the occult. One of these students, a young man
named Ethan Blane, called on me a week ago,
wishing to consult a particularly rare book called
the Scripture of Shul. My copy of this book is an
unpublished proof of a 16th century English
translation of a manuscript that is believed to be far
older.
Something about Blane struck me as odd during our
interview – he seemed somehow intense, as if filled
with some kind of religious fervour. I was worried
that he might be a black magic obsessive, or even
worse, a fanatic intending to destroy the book – I
have encountered both extremes before.
I told him that I would rather not give him access to
the book, and asked him to leave, but as I went to
show him the door, my legs buckled beneath me and
I collapsed into a swoon from which I did not
awake for some hours. When I did, Ethan and the
Scripture were, unsurprisingly, gone.
I realised that he had drugged my sherry, perhaps as
I took the book from the shelf to show to him.
Obviously he had always intended to steal it right
from the start. Indeed, according to the guard on
the desk, he just walked straight out of the building
carrying it in a black valise.
I considered calling the police of course, but it struck
me that this sort of man is probably well-versed in
avoiding any official enquiry. What’s more, I want
my property back much more than I want this man
arrested, and I had hoped that you could do this for
me. I know it is difficult, since I am quite sure
‘Ethan Blane’ is a false name and I have no address
for him. Nonetheless, his accent was local, and he
must be a student of the occult to have known about
the Scripture. Also, I have some talent for sketching
and have attempted a likeness of the man that may
help.
It occurs to me that if Blane was after this book he
may have spoken to some of the local rare book
dealers – I will give you a list, which along with the
sketch may help you to locate him.
I just want the book back, but should it be necessary
to use a little force on the young man I believe that
it would not only be just, in the light of his crime,
but also should serve to dissuade him from
attempting to steal other people’s property.
"

With this, he finishes and looks at you.

OOC,Lol...No problem...Wednesday it is! We'll get this thing on track yet! :D
Anthony DeCarlo listens to Quincey's story, jotting notes all along. He has had his issues with organized religion throughout his life, and the idea of the occult holds no water with him at all...

Just a bunch of hocus-pocus... DeCarlo thinks to himself. Why do people get all crazy about this stuff? To steal a book on it...really?! And this guy having no problem with the thief being roughed up! Wow, what is this world coming to? Oh well...work is work and maybe if I pull this off, it will help my social standing in this town with Quincey being known and all...

DeCarlo speaks after a moment of silence and thought after Quincey concludes his story...

"Alright, Mr. Quincey. I'll take the case. I have just a few more questions for you and then we can maybe discuss matters of payment for services rendered once I accomplish the task at hand..." DeCarlo nods towards Quincey to make sure he is following before posing his questions...

"I was curious if any of the other 'fellow students' of the occult you have had over have taken an interest in that particular book and if any of them may have been associated with this Blane character in your opinion?"

"As for the book, do you remember where you acquired it? Was it from one of the dealers on the list of local rare book sellers you are providing me with? As well, I would like a physical description of the book, if you could, in case I spot it." DeCarlo continues... "Also, can you think of any reason that this particular book would be of interest to the thief? I mean, he had you drugged and unconscious, so why did he take only this book and none of the other rare ones you have present?" DeCarlo motions with a hand to the large collection present around them. "Any more information about the book you can provide me with would be very helpful Mr. Quincey."

DeCarlo pauses for a second, thinking, then adds one more request...

"Mr. Quincey, I realize you hold considerable weight in this town. I was wondering how much weight you hold at Miskatonic U. and, more importantly, its library and staff? I would like to go there and find out if anyone has been inquiring about books similar to the one you have had stolen or related to its content. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to make much head way with the staff there in the past, most notably, a Ms. McLane. Are you able to...ahem...{DeCarlo clears his throat} grease the wheels so I may make inquiries concerning your case?"

Anthony DeCarlo sits back in his chair and waits for Quincey's responses...

Quincey looks at you, nods and begins to speak:
"No, there have been no other people who have shown an interest in this particular book, but I have had other visitors, mainly students, who would have come to discuss the occult with me. Blane had phoned me and told me he wanted to take a look at the book. He knew I had bought a year ago at an auction, maybe he was there, or someone had told him, I don't know and didn't ask, because when you buy something at a public auction, it is not exactly a secret. And among the literati, who owns which books is quite common knowledge. Blane did put in quite an urgent bid to see the book immediately. That was kind of strange, but then again, the impatience of the hungry scholar’s mind is something I can relate to…” [he chuckles a bit]. “Anyway, the contents of the book are quite unsavoury, very reminiscent of the Cultes des Ghoules: a study of necromantic magic from a number of extinct cultures such as Atlantis, Mu and Hyperborea. The author, Shul, claimed to be an immortal, born in Hyperborea 3000 years before writing the book. I consider this claim quite ridiculous, of course. The rituals are quite unpleasant. You see, while the occult is my chosen field only madmen take thecontents of these books seriously. Blane himself was getting very excited as he was leafing through it. In the end, he told me he wanted to borrow the book to study it in-depth for a couple of days. However, by that time, I had already made up my mind that this man was taking his studies far too seriously and I was not going to lend him the book. Then, I blacked out. Like I said, he must have drugged my sherry.”
He gets up and walks to the balcony doors and looks out. “I believe he must have been looking for other books as well. You could try the library of Miskatonic U. You can ask Dr Armitage for help, we are old friends, and he knows about the book…. And of course some of my contacts. Here is the list of book dealers that I frequent. They are very well known for their, ahm, collection.”

The list of book dealers contains only 3 names:

Charles David and Sons, Boston
Second hand books and papers, Boston
James L. Lorgan, Esq. [No address, just a post box]
“Mr Lorgan will contact you if you send him a note. The other two are normal shops, you can go visit any day during normal opening hours.”
He finishes by saying: “As for the fee, I’m offering you 100 Dollars for returning the book to me.”

DeCarlo takes in what Quincey has to say. Even though he was hoping for a few more leads, he feels the old man is on the level and giving him the best of what he knows. He takes the picture of Blane, studiously looking it over, then folds it and places it in his inside breast pocket. He then takes the list of rare book dealers and does the same. DeCarlo gets a physical description of the book from Quincey, jotting down notes all the while then turns to the matter of payment...
Kallisto73 wrote: “As for the fee, I’m offering you 100 Dollars for returning the book to me.”
Spoiler:
Kallisto73,Lol not sure if he's trying to swindle me but the bargain roll would say otherwise. However, I'm new to the P.I. game and not established so I'm unsure what to ask for. So I'm going to try for a bit more considering my financial circumstances. I'm not sure what to roll on (i.e. Bargain or Fast Talk?) but you can let me know. Either way I might still undersell myself here anyways! Oh well
DeCarlo ponders Quincey's offer for a few moments then speaks...

"That is a generous offer, Mr. Quincey. However, considering the urgency of the matter, the value of the book and, uh... He pauses to mull over the book dealer list..."...the travel to Boston and potentially being there a few days, requiring overnight stays, I would require a fee of $300. $100 dollars would be needed to be paid upfront to cover my retainer fee, as well as travel and research costs, and the remaining $200 would be payed upon return of the book."

He pauses a second to let this sink in but then continues with business before a response to demonstrate to Quincey that he is thorough and on the case...

"If you could ring up Dr. Armitage at Miskatonic U. tonight or, if it is too late, first thing in the morning to expect my presence, that would be great. I will stop in at the library before embarking to Boston to meet these book dealers. Since we are of a late hour tonight, the best I can do is interview the security guard of your building on my way home then prepare for the upcoming trip. If you have any more information, I'm all ears. If not, we can settle our financial agreement and I'll be on my way."

DeCarlo settles in comfortably and awaits Quincey's response...

Yep, by all means, do roll for fast talk to get more money :D
.

"Yes, I will ring Henry now. It is only 9:30 pm. He's a night owl." Quincey walks over to the phone. He dials a number from memory. "Marjorie? Franklin here, could I speak to Henry? - Yes...", "Hello Henry, listen, I have a favour to ask. I have found someone to try and get my book back, but he needs to do some research in the library first."- "No, tomorrow morning actually." - "Oh, you're off tomorrow? Hm." - "Miss McLane?" Quincey turns to you "Dr Armitage is out tomorrow, but he says he will ring a Miss McLane and you can talk to her." - "That would be great, Henry, thank you very much."

DeCarlo waits for Quincey to finish the call then speaks....

"Thank you Mr. Quincey for setting that up. As I mentioned, I will stop by the University library before departing to Boston and speak to Ms. McLane. Now for the matter of my fees..." DeCarlo pauses then continues...

"As mentioned, I would be looking for $300 for the job with $100 being paid upfront and the remaining $200 being paid upon completion of the job. This $100 would cover my retainer, as well as providing me with funds to travel to Boston and cover lodgings, meals and the like while there. Also, these funds would be handy if I need to pay any informants and the like. Would you agree to this?"

DeCarlo stated his case but felt like he had not convinced Quincey.

"Well, I should think that 100 $ should be ample payment for your services. You can give me your petrol receipts for the drive to Boston. Now, if you'll excuse me, I really need to get some work done tonight."

He shows you to the door, and as he opens it, you notice that it has four bolts on the inside. You take your leave and decide to turn in for the night. The next day, a Thursday, will bring quite a lot of work.

Anthony DeCarlo leaves Quincey's flat, noting the four bolts on the inside, but is pre-occupied with his lack of garnering more funds...

Thrifty, old curmudgeon! I'm sure this job is worth more...considering he hinted at me roughing up this 'Blane' character. DeCarlo sighs. Oh well. Work is work. I'll just have to make this trip on the cheap. Maybe I can stay with Ma and Pa if this runs more than a few days or someone else I know in the hometown.

He begins mentally compiling a checklist of his coming day, deciding a bus to Boston would be cheaper than travelling by rail. On his way out, he chats with the building security guard but gathers no more information than what was provided by Quincey. Exhausted, DeCarlo returns home and packs in advance, knowing it will be a busy morning. He hits the sack but finds sleep elusive; his brain going over the details of the case but offering no new insights.

Almost over-sleeping, DeCarlo awakens and springs to work. After quickly refreshing himself, he calls the Arkham Bus Line to verify the cost and times of afternoon departures to Boston. Then he rings up Quincey, notifying him that he will be keeping in touch every few days with updates or, in case, Quincey learns more information that he can pass on. DeCarlo then departs on foot from the Lower Southside in order to reach the Arkham First Bank right at opening time in order to withdraw $15 from his meager savings. After, he continues onto the University, arriving a few minutes before 11 a.m.

He makes his way quickly to the library and Ms. McLane's desk, hoping this interview will be a quick one as the sooner he gets to Boston, the sooner he can investigate the rare book dealers...

She wasn't all that friendly the first time...Hopefully, Quincey's call has done some to melt that icy exterior!

It is Thursday, 11 am, you arrive at the University and make your way straight to the library.
You can see Ms McLane sitting at the desk she was sitting at the last time. She is bending over a pile of books and small cards (filing cards for the catalogue, it seems). You walk over to her, and as soon as you step close enough to the table for your shadow to fall on the books, she looks up. Her face is blank for a second, but then she obviously remembers you. She says "Oh, it's you again. What can I do for you this time?".
"Yes, hello, ahm, I believe that Dr Armitage has told you that someone would stop by in connection with a book stolen from Mr Quincey?" - "And this someone is you?" she replies.
Oh boy, this is going to be one tough sell. "Yes, indeed, DeCarlo is my name." - "I remember your name, Mr DeCarlo, I remember all the names."
"Really? That's amazing, you must see so many people everyday. This is actually what I'm here about. I'm looking for someone named Ethan Blane, this is his picture. Do you remember him?"
Spoiler:
http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/3465414/ successful know roll for Frances
. She takes the picture from you and looks at it. "I know this man, I have definitely seen him, but he never gave his name."
You are disappointed. What good does it do that she remembers his face? We know what he looks like...
"But I can tell you what he did his research on, nasty stuff. I am an Egyptologist and I have spent a good deal reading their books on the occult, the cult of the dead etc. their beliefs on immortality, transcendency and life after death. And some of their rituals are really not pleasant. But this man was looking into becoming an immortal. He kept asking me about books on eternal life, magic and so on. He was really adamant it was possible, also, he was quite often quite hectic, things always had to be done really quickly. He could not wait for books to be brought over from the vault on our regular runs, the vault is in another building, you know. He always wanted his requests to be dealt with straight away. It is possible to have extra runs, but you have to pay 1 Dollar each time. The vault is only open at certain times, so we always had to get the key and the chief librarian etc. So, he had money. That was strange, because he definitely must live in a dive. He was telling me one day he had to buy new shoes because the rats had nibbled on his and they were now full of holes."

Anthony DeCarlo listened to Ms. McLane's information and took out his notepad to jot down a few notes...

Blane was looking to become immortal? DeCarlo ponders. This joe has got to be off his rocker...maybe even a boozehound or on something heavier...Opium perhaps...

DeCarlo returns his attention to Ms. McLane...

"Ms. McLane, both Mr. Quincey and I appreciate your time in this matter. I would like to ask you a few more questions then I'll be out of your hair."

DeCarlo pauses then poses the following questions to Ms. McLane, giving her time to respond between each query:

"Has this Mr. Blane returned to the library in the last week and a half?"

"Has there been anyone else inquiring about the same subject recently?"

"The book that has been stolen...uh..." DeCarlo refers to his notes. "Ah, yes...The Scripture of Shul. Have you ever heard of this book? And if so, what do you know about it? Did Mr. Blane inquire about it?"

Finally, DeCarlo concludes his questioning...

"Thank you, Ms. McLane. Is there anymore information you could provide about this Blane character or any other details you can recall. Even the smallest detail might come in handy..."

Ms McLane looks at you attentively and nods while you ask your questions.
„Mr Blane was here only 3 days ago. I remember it quite well, you see, he was carrying a book as he came in. Now, people who bring a book into a library, their own book, I mean, need to get a “bring your own” marker. So, I count the books they bring in and give them a coloured card.” She motions toward a row of card board cards in different colours with Arabic numbers on them. You can see that all cards with the number “1” are green. “So, I gave him a green card, and in he went. He soon came back with a request slip for the vault and some money. Of course, he wanted the book straight away as usual. He was also carrying a ream of papers, scribbled full of notes. That was usual as well.”

“Noone else has enquired about this subject, at least not when I was here.”

“Scripture of Shul? I have never heard of this book before, but I take it it is not Egyptian, because the stuff Mr Blane was enquiring about was never Egyptian. You see, Egyptology is my actual realm of interest. Like I said, the stuff he did look at was really weird, less scientific more, how shall I put it, supernatural and occult. I read some of the library cards when getting the books for him. Would you like a list?” She glances at you: “You do read Latin, Greek and Hieratic, don’t you?”

Kallisto73 wrote:"I read some of the library cards when getting the books for him. Would you like a list?” She glances at you: “You do read Latin, Greek and Hieratic, don’t you?”
DeCarlo's face flushed and he stuttered a bit in response to Ms. McLane's last response...

"Uhhhh....No, it's not my forte..." He responded. Either she was being pretentious but then again, she was not exactly cool to him being on the case, so he would take it anyways...

"If it's no trouble, I'll take a copy of the list...Got a friend who can help..."

DeCarlo shuffled for a bit but then recalled something else that was said...
Kallisto73 wrote:"Mr Blane was here only 3 days ago.”
"One last question Ms. McLane. Does Mr. Blane appear regularly, like on some kind of schedule?"

DeCarlo's brain swam for a second.
If he does, then this case will be open and shut. Catch him right here in the library!

DeCarlo waited for a response then continued...

"Ms. McLane, if Blane should appear again, could you give either I or Mr. Quincey a ring?"
DeCarlo passes on the numbers. "Uh...my receptionist is on vacation," DeCarlo lied. "But even if you ring Mr.Quincey, he may be able to reach me. I plan to be out of town for the next few days but back here within three days time."

DeCarlo took leave of the library. He hoped to catch the bus to Boston in time to at least visit one of the rare book dealers today then the other two tomorrow, returning to Arkham before three days were up. The trip to Boston from Arkham was roughly an hour and fifteen minutes, barring any trouble....
Kallisto73,Departures from Arkham (with regular arrivals to Boston in parenthesis) are 12:30 (1:45), 4:30 (5:45) and 7:30 (8:45). The librarian looks at you "No, his visits were actually always very irregular. Sometimes he would come twice a day, sometimes I wouldn't see him for weeks. The last time he was here, he stayed for almost 6 hours. He left in a hurry, just dropped all the books on my desk. His face was flushed, he was mumbling.
As for the list of books, there are three which I remember off the top of my head, the Book of the Dead, of course we only have a copy, the original scrolls are in the British Museum http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Pined ... t21-08.jpg, but the copy is most exquisite, though we don't have a translation. If you need help with that one, I can assist you. After all, it is my area of expertise." She smiles at you. "I'm fluent in Egyptian, I read hieroglyphs as well as Hieratic. The other was a Latin version of "De Vermiis Mysteriis and finally "Ho biblos melos tou kraniou". There are at least 5 other books that I remember getting for him, but I would have to check the cards, could you come back here when you are back in town?"

You smile back at her (her attitude sure has changed!) and thank her for her offer "Yes, that would be really great!"

DeCarlo is relieved that Ms. McLane's demeanor has cooled...

"Yes. Your help would be greatly appreciated in interpretating this Book of the Dead." Anthony smiles. "I'll be sure to stop back here when I return for the rest of the list as well as assistance in deciphering this book. Also, regardless of Blane's schedule, do not hesitate to call us if he should appear. Thank you for your help."

DeCarlo makes the following notations in his notebook:

- Book of the Dead - in Egyptian
- De Vermiis Mysteriis - in Latin
- Ho biblos melos tou kraniou
- + 5 others.....***Return to MU library upon return from Boston

Again, DeCarlo thanks Ms. McLane then hurries to catch one of the two early buses to Boston...hopefully...

DeCarlo feels a hint of nostalgia when he disembarks from the bus and sets foot in his hometown. A lot has changed over the years but there are still enough signs present from the years he spent growing up here to give him a feeling of familiarity.

Anthony mentally goes over his game plan...

First, I'll drop a line to James Morgan to set up an interview, hopefully either today or tomorrow. Then I'll make my way to talk with the dealer at Charles David and Sons. Time permitting today, I'll stop at Second Hand Books and Papers but if not, I can always stop there tomorrow.

Anthony thinks for a minute....

Probably be cheaper to stay with the parents. As well, we can visit for a bit and, better yet, I can get a home-cooked meal....

Anthony begins on his way....

You go to the nearest post office and send a letter to Mr Lorgan, giving your parents' return-address. Then, you make your way towards your parents'.

You arrive at the door and ring the bell. A woman opens, it is your mother. She looks at you "Tony." she says. Then she steps aside and lets you in. "Sal! Sal, Tony's here." Your mother is tall and slender, she has long, still raven-black hair. Her 55 years don't show on her face, and the girlish beauty she was famous for in her youth has transformed into a handsomeness that sets her apart from most other women. Your father comes into the corridor "Tony! Didn't expect to see you. What brings you here?"

"I'm here on business a couple of days, and I was wondering if I could stay the night?"

Your mother lifts her eyebrows: "Business?"

Anthony has known his mother long enough to recognize her tone and identify her raised eyebrows...

"Nothing like that, ma. It's on the level. I have an investigative job to recover a stolen book and I just had to come to town to visit a few bookstores. In fact, one of them will be sending a telegram here to arrange a meeting, if that's O.K?" He knew it would be. "If you could put me up for a day or two, that would be great. We can visit tonight and share stories...."

DeCarlo did not want to mention his lack of funds. He knew his parents would offer him money and they were not exactly well-off...

"So, if it's alright, I'll have to make my way back downtown for a few meetings then I'll return....hopefully in time for supper." Anthony grinned broadly, knowing she knew about his love for her cooking...

"So, sounds good?" He leans in to give his mother a peck on the cheek....

Anthony DeCarlo bids farewell to his parents and gets on his way. There's no use trying to convince his mother otherwise. He knows that once her mind is set, it's set...

Anthony decides to check out Charles David and Sons first. After that, time permitting, he will stop at Second Hand Books and Papers. If not, he will stop by the second place tomorrow. Hopefully by then, he will have heard from Morgan.

The shop is not hard to find. It is kind of non-descript from the outside. It contains a couple of books in the shop-window, which also shows the name, painted onto the glass. The door has a wooden frame and a glass pane.
As you enter, a little bell tinkles as you open the door. Inside, the shop is much bigger than you had expected. You can see that it stretches far into the building and you notice a staircase and a sign saying "Natural Sciences and Foreign language items upstairs."
The place is a little dimly lit, but once your eyes have accustomed themselves to it, it is fine. Of course, you see books, you smell books and you're overwhelmed. There must be thousands and thousands of volumes here. You take a closer look at one of the shelves and you realize immediately that the shelf is immaculate, not a single speck of dust, the books are ordered, not a single one is out of line. Like soldiers they stand to attention, waiting to be picked up, bought and read.
You are shaken from your reverie by a soft voice: "Can I help you, Sir?". As you turn around, you notice a man. He is around 60, has unusually long hair and bushy eyebrows. His eyes are of a blue that is so bright that you feel for a second that they are glowing. There are lots of wrinkles around his eyes which betray the fact that he must be smiling a lot. And indeed, his face creases into a pleasant smile as he is looking at you, waiting for an answer.

Anthony greets the man with a smile. "Good Afternoon, Sir. My name is Anthony DeCarlo. I am a private investigator hired by a patron of yours, Mr. Franklin Quincey. He recently has had a book taken from him, The Scripture of Shul, and I have been employed to track it down. Mr. Quincey provided me with a list of his book dealers, in the hopes that one of them may provide some clues about the individual who is involved in this theft, and your establishment was on the list."

Anthony pauses to remove the picture of Blane from his jacket pocket to present to the man then continues. "This is the individual suspected in the case. He has been going under the name of 'Ethan Blane.' He was described by Mr.Quincey as quite fanatical and possibly being obsessed with black magic and the idea of immortality. Mr.Quincey believes this man may be searching for similar books on the occult and supernatural. We were wondering if you have seen this man around or received any inquiries concerning these topics from anyone? Books, such as...uh..."

Anthony flips open his notepad and re-reads some of the titles provided to him by Ms. McLane...

"...uh...The Egyptian Book of the Dead, De Vermiis Mysteriis and Ho biblos melos tou kraniou
to name just a few..."

The man listens attentively. When he hears you naming the books, his eyebrows rise slightly. "Those are some very exquisite and very, very rare books, young man."
He looks around the shop as if the books would just fly out of their shelves towards him at the mention of their name. "I would be able to sell you two of the ones you named. But those would be copies, naturally, and their quality would never match the older versions." He looks back at you, "You see, books are like living beings, some are very dangerous, so people have tried to kill them for millenia. Others have decided to spread the word and have set to copying books. Sometimes, these copies are benevolent, they bring peace and happiness, sometimes, they are like a disease. But make no mistake: Once something has been written, it has been inscribed into the human psyche indellibly. Some traces will remain, will be found and will be written down again, and again and again. Even if the originals are eradicated. So, yes, I would have copies of two of these books. But noone has come in recently to ask for them. These books are not exactly light reading." He looks at you quizzically, then he shakes his head slightly: "You have not read any of them, I can tell. Mark my words: nor should you! These books are not be trifled with."
He looks at the picture: "Ah, interesting. Yes, I know this gentleman. A customer. Not a good one." He adds, as an afterthought. "What is it that you would like to know?"

Anthony DeCarlo listens to the old man's soliloquy about books and would usually shrug it off, but something in the old man's description and his tone convinces Anthony otherwise. Besides raising his hackles, it also gets Anthony's mind racing...

"..Uh...What do you mean 'not a good one' ? Has he been in recently or does he show up here often?" Anthony inquires. "..And what is he looking for?" He awaits a response from the old man but has many more questions after this...

The man looks at you: "He comes every so often, and he does buy. But the payments take a long time to come in. We have decided not to sell anything to him anymore without full payment on delivery. You see, these books here", he gestures towards the shelves, "appeal to many thousands of people. We have it all: Shakespeare, the Bible, Dryden, Schiller, Goethe, physics, maths, history, Plutarch, Caesar, Aristotle, Plato, Herodotus, Farmer's Weekly bound back issues. We have them all. People come here, and they find a book they like, but these books are not necessarily cheap. So, we agree to lease them to our customers, they make a down-payment and then pay on a weekly basis, but they already take the book home. Mostly students, you see, they could never afford the new books, and even the used books have their price. It is a trust business. But most of our customers respect that.
Then there are the books you have mentioned, they are not for everyone, they are invaluable, they are priceless in that they will sell for whatever people are willing to offer. And the man in the picture was ready to buy at high prices, but his payments were always late. So, we refused credit."

DeCarlo's mind is racing. He tries to remain focused on the task at hand, which is absorbing the old man's information, before designing elaborate schemes to trap Blane...

"You said books can be purchased with payments and Blane has attempted to employ this method? How are these payments received? And is there an address or location where these payments had came from, back when you accepted his credit?"

DeCarlo's heart nearly jumped into his throat!

"Good sir, If you could! That would be a great help to myself and my employer, Mr. Quincey."

Anthony was excited that maybe he had a lead. Even though the case was still in its early stages, he was beginning to worry over a lack of tracking this miscreant and was starting to devise schemes to attract Blane. He would mentally file these plans away in case he hit a snag and hoped this information could take him in the right direction...

"Certainly. Wait here." The man turns around and walks towards the counter, and then around it. He rummages around and gets out a big ledger. He leafs through it and then takes out a piece of paper and a fountain pen.
He writes down something, closes the ledger, puts it back and picks up the paper.
He walks towards you, smiles, and hands you the sheet. On it, you find the name Ethan Blane and an address in the really bad part of Arkham.
"Here you are, young man."

DeCarlo takes the piece of paper from the book seller but, before scanning it, speaks again to the old man...

"Thank you, Sir. This information may prove very helpful. I will be sure to pass on your kindness and generosity to Mr. Quincey. He'll be very grateful." DeCarlo returns the old man's smile.

He reads the address on the note. Even though he has only lived in Arkham for a few months, he attempts to recall if he recognizes that neighborhood or any specifics about it...

DeCarlo thanks the man once more before leaving the shop.

Once outside, he considers his options...

This information is crucial...but I'm in Boston already at the moment so I might as well check out the other book sellers and at least wait and see if that Morgan character gets a hold of me.

Anthony considers the time and decides whether he can reach the Second Hand Books and Papers shop before closing. If not, he will head back to his parent's home to see if James Morgan sent a letter...

You decide to try your luck and make your way to Second Hand Books and Papers. The store is easy to find. It looks a little brighter than the one you have just come from, but that may be because the lights are on.
You open the door. A little bell rings. The shop is distinctly different from the other, it is much smaller, and only very few shelves line the walls.
You walk up to the counter, behind which a young man is standing. He is looking at you and greets you "Good evening, sir, how can I help you?"

DeCarlo is anxious about his present lead but manages to contain his enthusiasm, just in case he finds more information here...

"Good afternoon sir. The name is Anthony DeCarlo. My employer, Mr. Quincey, is searching for a book that was recently taken from him. He provided me with the name of your establishment in case the culprit has shown his face here..."

Anthony fumbles for a second before producing the picture of Blane.

"He has been going by the name of 'Ethan Blane.' Have you seen this man around your establishment?"

"He has stolen a book called The Scripture of Shul and would seem to be interested in discovering eternal life. He has been spotted consulting books pertaining to that matter..."

"Any information you could provide would be of great interest to both my employer and I..."

The man frowns for a second. "The name is not familiar, the man's name, I mean. The book's however..." he smiles, "Well, I suppose someone in my line of work would be expected to know the book's name. Although I have never had a chance to look at the book itself."
He looks at the picture of Ethan and it is clear that he is giving it his full attention. Then he shakes his head, "I am sorry, but this man has never been in the shop when I was here. I also can't recall seeing his name on our mailing list."

I'll be sure to mention your help to my patron..a regular client of your establishment. Thank you very much for your time."

DeCarlo decides to return to his parent's home to spend the night and to see if a message has arrived from Morgan, the last book dealer. If so, he'll meet with the gentleman but if not, he'll return to Arkham tomorrow to investigate the address he's obtained.

You return to your parents' and have a pleasant evening with a very good meal. Your mother has cooked your favourite dishes and after an extended meal, you go to bed.
The next morning, still no word from Morgan has arrived, so you return to Arkham on the 11 am bus.

You decide to return home first and check your mail and your office. Except for the electricity bill and the Arkham Advertiser, there is no news.

In the late afternoon, you make your way to address. This part of Arkham is seedy, you had known this before, but actually seeing it makes it worse. You finally arrive at the house: It's a tenement building with 5 names on the door, one of them reads "E. Blane".

DeCarlo is not sure how to handle this...

He might have been using an alias and I would hate to barge in and get the wrong guy..or even a plant...

He decides to see if he can enter the tenement and maybe listen outside of the door of Blane's flat for occupants. If hearing any, maybe he could stake out the joint, waiting for Blane to leave.

DeCarlo notes the number of Blane's room and tries the door to see if it is unlocked, not sure if this tenement has a central hall...

As you try the door, the front door opens with a screech "Alright, the care-taker seems to not be taking care of this place", you think to yourself.
You enter a small hallway, which is dimly lit, and see a staircase leading up. You cautiously move up and as you climb the stairs, an elderly, bent woman comes down towards you. She is carrying what looks like a trash can.

Damn! Need to think on my toes... He berates himself.

DeCarlo steps to one side of the door and pounds on it with his free hand...

"HEY! WHAT'S GOING ON IN THERE!" He shouts...

As you pound on the door, you realize that the door was not really closed but the latch was slightly loose.
The door swings slowly open…
You can see a corridor. You see hooks on the wall with several coats and hats. Some shoes are strewn on the floor, a threadbare runner covers the floorboards.
At the far end of the corridor, you see a second door, half open, and reddish flickering light, as if from candles, dancing around. The wailing continues.

As you are getting closer, you can make out that the "wailing" is more of a chanting, although you cannot understand it, you can identify syllables, forming words in an unknown language. You carefully open the second door and peer inside:
You can see many candles, on the floor, on the rickety night stand, on the window sill. There is also one bed, unmade, and you can see that the whole room, its walls, the floor, have been smeared (or is that decorated?) with drawings in what looks like red ink, but the smell tells you that it must be blood.

You see a man you immediately identify as Blane (the drawing was very accurate, although the man before you looks much thinner, unholesomely so, than the man in the drawing) crouching naked in a pentagram drawn on the ground. His teeth are bared, his hands are raised towards the ceiling, he is chanting and swaying in time with his song.

On the floor, you can see a book next to him and several bones, which, by their length, you judge to be human thigh-bones. You can also see two skeletal human hands, earth still sticking to them, Blane must have dug them up. Blane himself is full of blood that must have dripped on him when he painted the signs on the walls, his hands are stained red. There is also mud and dirt on his fingers. He seems to have lost weight rapidly, the skin on his face hanging loosely on the bones of his skull. His eyes are bloodshot.

DeCarlo reels a bit upon encountering the scene and he has to hold back the bile rising in his throat when confronted with the sights and sounds of this...

What is this god awful spectacle....?
OOC,I failed miserably there ;) My first response would be to shoot the lunatic 'cuz he's obviously up to no good but I've read too many HPL stories so I have insider knowledge and that would be out of character lol!
DeCarlo takes a step back but composes himself. He spies a book on the floor, through watery eyes, next to Blane and assumes that it must be The Scripture of Shul that he is looking for. He takes a step forward...
IC,My first option would be to try to sneak up on Blane and smack him on the head, hopefully rendering him unconscious thus acquiring the book. However, this would depend on his position in relation to me in the room and whether he even notices me in the throes of his ritual. Failing that and him noticing me, I would have to threaten him with the gun, demanding the book back...

DeCarlo begins to rise from the floor while fumbling for his gun. His adrenaline is flowing but he is dumbstruck.

Geez, he's not as sick as he looks...

As he searches for his gun, he eyes the book laying on the floor...
Options,If I did not lose my gun in the melee, I will draw it and consider threatening Blane to hand over the book or face dire consequences. However, if I do not have my gun or it appears I can grab the book and escape out the door then I will attempt that. Something tells me Blane will be difficult to persuade :o

DeCarlo's eyes widen and he attempts to dive out of the way of Blane, hopefully avoiding the lunatic's attack and getting to the door to flee...
OOC,DeCarlo has no intention of shooting Blane at this point (yet), he was just hoping to intimidate him but that doesn't seem to be happening. Anthony was a former convict but that was for petty theft, not murder and he has never pointed a weapon at a person let alone fired a gun at one. One could argue that Blane is appearing less than human but Anthony just assumes he's mad. Anthony has no intention of committing murder. He is going to attempt to escape. If he is able to grab the book on the way out without slowing down, he will but presently his concern would be his own safety and the book is not that high on his list of priorities now.

DeCarlo, unable to escape the faster, stronger Blane and fearing for his life, attempts to shoot the man to stop the beating...

OOC,Yes, thanks for the suggestion. That action seems more in keeping in line with Anthony's tendencies at this point.
DeCarlo manages to get his arm free and his finger on the trigger but, in a split second decision, elects to try and hit Blane in the face or head with the weapon...

Spoiler:

. You try to swing at him with your gun, but can't really make it. Blane continues to throttle you. You try again
Spoiler:
, and the butt of your gun makes contact with Blane's temple. He let's go of you and snarls. He seems surprised that you actually hit him and he can feel pain. His eyes widen madly, he turns on his heels, runs for the window and vaults outside.
You hear no screaming, only a sickening thud.

DeCarlo picks himself up, exhausted from the struggle and sore from the beating...

How could someone so sickly-looking be so fast and strong...? He thinks to himself through a piercing headache.

Once on his feet, Anthony bends over resting his hands on his knees and coughs, spitting up some blood onto the floor. He gathers himself up and moves to the window to survey the damage of Blane's fall....
OOC,Do I take any HP damage from the throttling I took?

Spoiler:
Take 1d3 HP damage
You look through the window and see the smashed body of Ehtan Blane lying in a pool of blood. People have gathered around it and are looking at the corpse.
It is clear that the police will soon arrive on the scene.
You survey the room.
Spoiler:
You can now make 2 spot hidden rolls and then leave without encountering the police.

As DeCarlo approaches the window, he lightly rubs his jaw. He is sore from Blane's beating but nothing appears missing or broken.

Peering out the window, he is surprised to see Blane's body on the street below. He had assumed that there was a fire escape or the roof-top of another building that the man could have landed on and got away...

Wow, this guy was a certified nut. Why would he jump to his death?

Suddenly, he realizes how bad this would look if he were found here in the flat of a dead man. He quickly backs away from the window and puts his gun away. He picks up the book and takes a quick look around the room...

You look throught the apartment (not that there is much to look at) and find:
12 Dollars in cash, a sleeping draft, the Scripture of Shule (and as you can see, it has been heavily annotated by someone). You also find all of Ethan Blane's notes (the handwriting tells you that it was he who annotated the Scripture of Shule). A lot of the text references the scripture and you can see that, with the book and these notes, even someone less educated in the occult could probably cast a few spells (not that spells work, of course).
You also find Ethan Blane's wallet with his papers.

DeCarlo stuffs Blane's notes into the book and places it under his arm. As for the cash and wallet, he leaves those behind. In another day and age, Anthony may have taken the money but his days of petty theft are behind him. Besides, taking the money might give the police the impression that this was a robbery gone bad instead of the suicide of an unstable individual. The evidence in the room should back this....the bloody writing on the wall, the dug-up body parts, etc.

He checks Blane's wallet for anything interesting before placing it back where he found it.

After that, DeCarlo plans to leave the room and make his way downstairs. He will look for an alternate exit out of the tenement; one that does not take him past the body and the gathering crowd...

You go down the stairs and see a narrow door, which is ajar. Through it, you can feel a draft of cold, fresh air. You step outside and find yourself in a small courtyard. You can see trash cans (the old lady was probably down here and forgot to close the door earlier). You can see a fence behind the trash cans, which would be easily climable. You look around and see noone. You assume that they are all gathered outside.

DeCarlo takes one more look around the courtyard while closing the door quietly behind himself, making sure the coast is clear.

As he makes his way to the fence, he realizes he will probably need both hands to scale over it. He begins to remove his jacket with the intent of wrapping it around the book and Blane's notes and dropping it over the fence before he starts the climb.

You make it safely out of the courtyard and onto the street beyond the fence.
You look up and down, but there is noone. You leave the area of Blane's appartment quickly, but you don't run (no use attracting attention). You see a couple of cops, but they don't take any notice of you.
Spoiler:
I assume that you are now around 2 km away from Ethan's. You can now decide where to go/what to do next.

Anthony relaxes now that he has put some distance between himself and Blane's flat. He would have had a lot of explaining to do if the police had found him there. He decides to head back to his own place. While walking, he reflects on the events of the evening...

That was odd. Why would he kill himself? Surely getting caught with a stolen book would not warrant such drastic actions. And what of all these notes and the scene in his room....the body parts, the strange signs painted in blood on the walls...?

Anthony finds himself even more puzzled now than before he arrived at Blane's...

It's late now so perhaps I will give Quincey a call tomorrow to let him know I have the book. Tonight I'll head back to my flat and nurse these wounds...maybe look over these notes more closely. Perhaps Miss McLane at the MU library could shed some light on what Blane was doing, considering her skill in Egyptology.

He carries on, moving from one shady neighbourhood of Arkham to another...

The next morning, you ring Quincey and give him the good news. The old man is overjoyed when you return the book to him. He pays your fees and offers you a cigar.
Spoiler:
You get 1d3 sanity back for successfully returning the book. You can also go to the library to meet Ms McLane.
"Thank you so much, Mr DeCarlo, have a seat, have a seat, cigar?" The old man lights a cigar for himself and proffers a box to you.

DeCarlo accepts a cigar before settling down into one of the available chairs, enjoying a moment of satisfaction for a job well done. As he lights the cigar, taking several deep puffs to savour the taste, he inquires about what he saw...

"So during the investigation, I saw some things most discomforting. When I came upon Mr. Blane, he seemed to be involved in some form of ritual involving recently exhumed body parts and painted blood on the walls. Can you explain any of this? It was very strange and has caused me a great deal of concern..."

Anthony awaits a response. His concern has been alleviated with the payment received but he is curious how the old man responds...

The old man looks at you quizzically for a long moment, then he puffs on his cigar and at length, he answers: "Books, my young friend, can be dangerous. At least some of them. It is not like that there is any inherent danger in the pages or the leather of the cover, but the words, when read by a susceptible (or gullible) mind, can play tricks on people. Think of any of the holy books that have come down to us. They can turn into weapons in the wrong hands. So with this book. So with the ancient Egyptian writings about the secrets of the dead. If someone starts to believe, there is no telling what they might do. Therefore my absolute refusal to lend the book to Blane. Alas! I was right."

DeCarlo considers the old man's response but it does not take him long to concur. Despite the support of his religious parents and the good Father Griffin, it took a fair amount of time for him to even reach a plateau of belief close to being comfortable with religion but he was still a ways off personally. The fanatic fervour that consumed some believers, especially in offering the written word as proof of an absolute, was always something Anthony could attack and tear down from the inside as a youth. But now, he was an adult with a second chance. However, what Quincey just said was all the proof he needed...especially with the visual evidence he encountered...

"Right you are sir! Of course." Anthony salutes with his cigar and takes a draw. He continues. "Well it was a pleasure working for you. If you have any more work you need further conducted, I can be your man."

DeCarlo puts the cigar out in the nearby ashtray and rises to leave...
Show,If Quincey has nothing more to say, I'll leave and stop by the bank for a deposit in my savings account then continue on to the MU Library to see the always effervescent Ms. McLane. Concerning my evening last night, I planned to review Blane's notes in an earlier post above. Did I encounter any more other than a poorly written spell?

Quincey nods, thanks you again and closes the door behind you.
You make your way to the bank (it is around 11 am). And then you decide to visit Ms McLane at the university library.
You check your reflection in a shop window (incidentally, a stationary shop, and in the window you see a beautiful, expensive-look fountain pen. You look at it for a couple of seconds, then, you walk on).
It is a crisp day, sunny, but cool.
As you arrive at the library, you can see Ms McLane at her usual post, manning the desk and eyeing everyone leaving and coming in, checking out and taking back books, giving everyone a non-commital smile.

You approach her: "Hello, Ms McLane."
She looks at you and when she recognizes you, she gives you a real smile and answers, "Hello Mr DeCarlo! What brings you here?"
Spoiler:
You found quite a lot of papers, which, to you, don't make much sense, but it could be that McLane would be willing to help you, and perhaps have dinner?

She looks at you and when she recognizes you, she gives you a real smile and answers, "Hello Mr DeCarlo! What brings you here?"
Decarlo smiles back. "Well, of course you, young lady..." Anthony realizes maybe he is pouring it on too thick. He has been away for too long and his etiquette may be rusty with the ladies, considering his jail time in his late youth. Regardless, he continues...

"I recalled that you had skill with Egyptology and I have acquired some notes from my suspect. They mean nothing to me but perhaps you could look them over and see if you can decipher anything from the information presented. I would like to invite you to Crawford's Restaurant for dinner. It would be a pleasure to be accompanied by such a beautiful young lady. Perhaps, you could view some of these papers after the meal?"

Anthony's presentation was awkard but the restaurant was the best establishment in town...and he presently had the money to accomplish it. He continued before a response...

"I can pick you up around seven or so in a cab tonight. My vehicle is in the shop at present. I would hope you would accompany me for some fine dining and to illuminate my appearance with your presence...."

He had no car but hoped the little white lie would stick...

OOC,Wow, that went better than I thought. Unfortunately, I did not personally think to bring the papers with me. Would a luck roll suffice here? If not, I will accept the offer, explaining my predicament and then take the time to travel back home to get the papers, using a cab both ways (since I can afford it) to speed up their arrival in presenting them to the young Ms. McLane. How big can Arkham be? That should still give me some time to acquire some fresh new clothes for this engagement :D

luck roll: impale, massive success! http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/3764868/
Your face lights up. You had stashed the papers safely into an envelope and put them under your waistcoat. You had, after all, almost paid with your life for them. Nothing was going to take them away from you.
You hand them to Ms McLane, who looks at them, frowns, looks at you and says "Well, that is something you don't see every day. Alright, when will you pick me up?"

OOC,What luck!!...but I'm sure Invisible Castle will get me in the end when I need these rolls later. However good for a date now :D
"I can pick you up around 6:45 if you like...and if you give me your address..."

Anthony was not the most confident man but felt like he had scored big...like Babe Ruth helping win the '23 World Series. He passed the papers to the young lady and waited for a response. He withdrew his pen and notepad to record her address...
And onward...,Once he acquires the address to pick her up, DeCarlo will go out and try to purchase a new suit. Most likely a Cashmere Dress suit due to funds. He'll have no time to wash it but will choose a seller who can provide the cleanest one. The remaining cash on his person will go towards the cab and the meal.

She accepts the papers and gives you her address. It is in the better, but not the posh part of town. She informs you that she is boarding with a "charming widow" who rents out rooms in her house to young lady-lodgers.

You confirm address and time once more and, with a slight spring in your step, you make your way into town to shop for a nice suit.
Spoiler:
[Spoiler-Button]It is not a problem to find shops that carry second-hand clothes. I would assume that a suit like that would come in at around 60 Dollars[/Spoiler-Button]

OOC,Sorry for the inconsistent posting, I've been pre-occupied in the RL world. I was going by the 1920s price list in the rulebook. I was looking for something in the 20$ price range as to not leave me short for the meal and to still have pocket cash available. Let me know if I am able to find this. If not I'll have to go with what I got....However, not sure if I have time to get that dry cleaned and pressed ;)
