On Route to the docks
8:12pm

Image

The cart bounced along the rough roads, making good time through the encroaching night. Ellie turned in her seat, "You didn't have to come ya know, I don't want you folks getting into bother on my account!" The cart drove for around fifteen minutes before drawing up, the smell of the sea was tangible - sharp salt, mixed in with a sickly sweet rotting aroma that only flotsam and jetsam could produce. There was a state of agitation at the gates ahead, guards were milling around and shouting to their colleagues.

Ellie's face was dark, "maybe this is way Thomas has been unable to meet me...we need to find a way in!"

"Good thing we came," says Kirsten, "and I'm glad to help. We need to back each other up. I don't think we'll be getting inside through those gates. There has to be another way in. If I have to, I can climb over somewhere that isn't being watched carefully." She looks around for an alternative entrance.

Carl noticed a small chainlink fence spanning a gap between two warehouses. It was out of the way, and darkened as an overhead light was out. More invitingly there was no barbed wire across its top.

OOC - Climb rolls +20 I believe to avoid rattling the fence links noisily. Ellie 1d100=97...errr....falls on her arse I believe! I'll let you do a write up for your characters and then do something fitting with her.

Kirsten approaches the fence first and effortlessly scrambles up and down the other side without a sound. She waits at the bottom for the others to join her.

Carl also handily climbs over the fence with ease.

Then he does an excellent and rather gentlemanly, catch, preventing Ellie from falling on her tush.
keeper,if I'm allowed, at least.

OOC - The catch helped Ellie avoid injury, however ...Guard listen roll: 1d100=35

Ellie lost her grip on the top of the fence and tumbled down the fence. His reflexes sharpened by the adrenalin of the action, Carl shot out a hand and arrested the young woman's fall preventing any injury. She grinned and stepped backwards to regain her balance, but her foot smacked into a small bottle crate sending beer bottles skittering noisily across the alleyway.

They trio held their breath collectively, and then looked concerned as they heard a call from the end of the alley. The silhouette of Italian soldier appeared in the mouth illuminated from behind by a high, flickering neon bulb. "Altolà!" He called, "Chi va là?"

Kirsten tries to pull Carl into the shadows, but she can tell that they've been caught in the light. The sudden encounter with the soldier brings the reality of the situation home to her. This isn't a movie, it's a real spy mission - and if she makes a mistake, she doesn't get a second take. "Ellie, stay out of sight," she whispers, thinking quickly as she wraps her arms around Carl and holds him close. "Play along," she whispers huskily in his ear, right before she kisses him passionately on the lips. She breaks off and turns to face the Italian soldier, waving awkwardly as though drunk.

Carl plays along, awkwardly at first, but Kirsten is such a good actor that he gets lost in the performance.

"YOU THERE!" the guard shouted first in Italian, then in broken English, "WHAT ARE YOU DOING?" He began to march the pair wielding a large baton...

Kirsten giggles and wobbles, putting an arm around Carl to steady herself. "It isn't obvious?" she says, slurring her words to make it appear that she is intoxicated. "We just came back here to drink and make love. It looked out of the way, and we thought we wouldn't be disturbed here." However, this is not her best performance.

The guard looks suspicious, "You should not be here, this area is off limits! You will need to come with us," as he says this a second burly soldier appears over his shoulder gripping a solid looking truncheon.

Kirsten turns to Carl and pouts. "You promised me this would be romantic," she says. "This is really spoiling the mood." She looks back at the guards. "Surely we can come to some kind of arrangement." She opens up her purse. "I doubt they pay you boys enough." Once again, she can see her arguments are falling on deaf ears. She looks at Carl again. "My boyfriend here is rich."

Carl fumbles over his words, still distracted by recent events.

"Enough! You will come with us so we can check your papers and speak to the Capitano. You can explain yourselves to him; There has been a break in here tonight and here you are...This doesn't look good for you!" Him and his fellow thug moved to restrain and escort the couple.

OOC,Nuts, I was hoping Carl would have tried a Credit Rating roll instead. That roll would have succeeded.

Kirsten sighs. "All right, let's go talk to your captain," she says. "I'm sure once we explain everything he'll be a reasonable man." She hopes she can talk their way out of this mess, or if necessary get the Germans with the expedition to vouch for her. And Ellie is still free and on the inside. A fight is not a good idea right now. They wouldn't stand a chance if she didn't use her gun, and if she did every guard in the place would hear the shots and they still wouldn't stand a chance.

ooc, whoops. That would have been a great idea! Maybe it still is ...
Carl did his best to recover, then tried again.

"Listen, sounds like you've been really busy, and we were just having a bit of fun, so I don't want you to have to get even more work on top of everything else. I'm certainly no thief, and neither is my friend here. It's all a misunderstanding."

The two soldiers began frog-marching the pair through the dock, there was a lot of activity; soldiers hurried backwards and forwards with flashlights and muffled, clipped calls from squad to squad. Carl and Kirsten were led to a large vessel moored in the harbor. The rusted freighter lay heavy in the water, the brackish, stinking water slopping almost to her lower portholes.

Three men were on the deck, two working at the far end - loading boxes into a crane's cargo net - and a third loitering by the gangway smoking. The guards led the captives aboard and down into the hold...

The adventure continues here...
