The Mermaid of the Mediterranean - Tripoli
5:42pm

Image

The port wing of the Junkers JU 290 transport dipped catching the evening sun with a glint as it turned in a low, wide circle across the ancient and sprawling metropolis of Tripoli. The Italian-held city was the first stop on the expedition's journey onto the Dark Continent. The sun was low in the sky and the turquoise of the sea provided a stunning backdrop to the white-washed city.

Set on one of North Africa’s best natural harbours, Tripoli exuded a distinctive Mediterranean charm infused with a decidedly Arabic-Islamic flavour. Its rich mosaic of historical influences – from Roman ruins and artefacts to the Ottoman-era medina – is enough to whet the appetites of those in the group with an academic interest in History. Conversations sparked into life, almost immediately the city was spotted, amongst the professors and scientists.

Another fifteen minutes ticked by before the engine note changed and the great plane began its gentle descent. As the tires gently kissed the dirt runway, testament to the skill of the pilot, an expectant hush fell over those in the body of the steel beast. Professor Albrecht Eichelberger stood and addressed the expedition:

"Now my friends, we have truly begun our adventure," this earned a slightly scathing look from SS-Standartenführer Lothar Wahl, "tomorrow we are to head by train into the heart of the continent. Once we are settled into our hotel ladies and gentleman, the evening is your own to dine, explore or rest. Tonight we celebrate for tomorrow we explore and discover in the name of the Reich!"

Wahl assigned Feldwebel Gunnar Koertig and his troopers with handling the the conveyance of the teams equipment and gear to the station. Taxis arrived to move the expedition members, Wahl making it clear to anyone in the party that is not at the station by 7:30am will not be waited on...

Image

The Taxis, having woven their way through the bustling streets, pulled up to the Al Waddan Hotel and disgorged their passengers into the cool foyer where amiable reception staff greeted the team; accompanied by the sound of tinkling water and the smell of rose petals...

Once in the hotell room Alvaro changes his clothes to a afternoon casual suit in dark green, he adjust his shoulder holster and the .32 Revolver conceling it as best he can. Ready for some mingling with the nazis? he looks at himself in the mirror and a dark frown spreads over his face remembering his true mission and why he is doing this, risking his life on this mission... Si señor!

Alvaro walks down to the foyer checking out any woman in the place. maybe i get lucky Alvaro smiles as he sees Carl and walks towards him to chat a bit. Nice hotel isint it, who would think something like this could exit in Africa

Professor Paul Eckhart watches the younger men; the Spaniard--one of Franco's men, no doubt--is eyeing up attractive females: Prof. Eckhart feels old. He walks over to the bar. Cognac, please, a large one.

Percy will visit the Medina and the arch of Marc Aurelius. When he finished, he will amke a quick visit to the nearest brothel...
But first he will ask for rum in the bar.

An officious looking barman handed Prof. Eckhart a generous measure of smoky alcohol with a nod and a smile, "You are new in town, no?" He began to arrange the bottles behind the bar, occasionally sweeping unseen dust with a delicate flick of his cloth. In testimony to his training he carefully tilted his head in the Professor's direction to allow for, but not force, polite conversation.

Carl noticed that the display table contained a variety of interesting rocks and minerals, a geologist would not doubt be impressed but it was not the kind of thing he had any appreciation for...bunch of sparkly rocks, great! The lounge was reasonably full and there were a number of discussions taking place between members of the expedition.

There are a number of other patrons and Alvaro is drawn to a leggy, dark haired girl nursing a gin and tonic at the end of the bar...
Percy,OOC Do you want to disappear off so soon? Its fine if you do, though you may miss some hijinx!

"I know," says Kirsten, looking around in awe. "I've never seen anything like it. This is the furthest I've ever been from home. I've been in movies that took place all over the world, but it's so much different to travel to exotic locales for real."

"One should expect both the familiar and the unfamiliar when traveling abroad. Where ever you go, people are people, even if the food and the customs change."

Handy OOC,Okay forgive me I missed those rolls but I found the handwritten note in the margin of the adventure about what I was going to tell you! Psychology: Wahl appears a stoic and driven career soldier, he speaks his mind often and cares little for upsetting others especially the academics. He exudes confidence when in charge of his own men, he is a natural leader. He does not appear to display the typical stroke of cruelty that many others of rank in the SS have, yet there is certainly a frosty edge to the man and he is not to be taken lightly. Listen: It is difficult to hear exactly what is said but mainly the conversation concerns the logistics of the expedition. Eichelberger and Wahl clearly are motivated by polar different goals on this expedition; Eichelberger is like a excitable child at times getting carried away by the adventure, whilst Wahl is motivated solely by finding his missing team.

The woman casually regarded the Spaniard, then spoke with a clipped North American accent; "If you are one of those hoary academics, then forget it buster." She cocked her head appraising him, then with her foot moved a chair out from the bar and angled her nearly finished drink...another?

At the other end of the bar, the barman chuckled at the Professor's remark, "It seems like we have our whole quota of Germans for the year in at the same time tonight! We get the odd military type, showing the Italians how to march up and down, that sort of thing. I have heard you are keen on 'travelling in foreign countries' France, Poland, no?" He gives a knowing wink, cheeky but not insulting, "What brings you all to our fair city?" The barman is of Libyan descent but his English is impeccable.

Kirsten nods, then glances over to the woman at the bar. "Sounds like she's a fellow American," she says, "or possibly Canadian. I doubt she'll want to talk to a 'hoary academic' like me. I wonder if our Spanish friend can charm her."

'Well i dont mind the academics, but im certain not one of them' 'Im Alvaro Uribe Miss...' 'Spaniard , explorer, bodyguard and most important... dancer' 'And you Miss tell me please who are you?' Alvaro smiles his best smile making a sign to the bartender to fill up the ladies glass.

"I favour Russia."
. . . "What brings you all to our fair city?" . . .
"An expedition--south. I'm Professor Eckhart, expedition botanist. Oh, for the record, I don't 'march,' and as for 'travelling,' I haven't done that since '14." Prof. Eckhart smiles, to show the bartender he is being lighthearted with his comments.

She gave him a strange look and then frowned slightly, as if musing something over in her mind; "my name is Ellie Knox, touring here in the city with my brother. We hail from Kansas, if you were wondering about the accent...thou the folk around here wouldn't know Baja from the Bronx!"

Miss Knox said she's from Kansas, not Baja. Baja is actually in Mexico, not the United States. I should know, Baja is not too far from home for me and I've been there before. I do happen to know it from the Bronx." She grins, looking back at Ellie.

"Quite right Miss Hart, I often have a habit of talking too loud at the table. My mom would smack my wrists if she caught me just then!" Her smile appeared genuine for hearing a friendly accent. Ellie clapped her hands together, "My brother, oh he had a errand to run in town. He's a little overdue but boys will be boys, he's probably got a gal on his arm! I think I could take a spin on the floor...that is if you think you can keep up." Her mischievous smile twinkled at Alvaro.

The bartender obliged at once when asked, pointing the Professor to a ornate and expensive looking gramophone on a side table. There was a stack of records neatly stacked on a shelf underneath the table-top.

With the machine cranked up and the dancing begun, it wasn't long before others from the expedition team joined them along with several patrons from the hotel itself. The barman, ever efficient, kept the drinks flowing and a general feeling of contentment settled over the assembled group.

Breathless from the exertion, Ellie made a point of catching Kirsten and Carl at the bar. Alvaro, unabashed, began to Charleston like their was no tomorrow.

Eckhart too proved to be an unexpected hit and rather spry for a man of his years and position. That was until a over-elaborate twirl took him clean into one of the German Mechanical Engineers from the expedition, upending the poor fellow's drink!
Kirsten & Carl,"Well it looks as though I have some really good friends here after all! I was told to be on the lookout for you coming into the city. I have to admit I am starting to worry about my partner now," She sees their raised eyebrows, "yeah I know the line about my brother was a little corny but it kinda caught me on the hop!"

He stood there, arms spread, looking down at the dark splotches on his shirt as drops fell from his nose. Jurgen grabbed the Professor's arm to help him get his footing, laughing and saying, "Apology accepted, my friend. You were dancing so well that I was not expecting your, ah, change of direction. But it is OK. I am drinking beer, and it is not as good as those from the Mother Land, I must say, but it is satisfactory."

Jurgen then grabbed a cloth from a nearby table to wipe off his face and shirt and righted his chair. While cleaning his wire-rim glasses, he turned and spoke to the three colleagues at his table, "Dies ist ein freund von mir, Professor Eckhart." Kirsten & Carl,Ellie acknowledged Freya with a raised eyebrow, "Heavy allied presence tonight then! Thomas went to the dock to get a look at a container ship that the Italians were guarding a little too well. He was supposed to be in and out whilst the docks were crowded in the evening, I expected him back over an hour ago. If he doesn't come back soon I guess I'll have to go find him and haul his ass outta trouble." Ellie paused as she saw Alvaro leave the dance floor, "I must say, I'm rather flattered by your friend's attention, this job has its perks!"
From the bar Ellie saw Alvaro heading to the terrace and waved at him jauntily. She then made a mime suggesting she is not quite finished with the dancing just yet and he should meet her on the dance floor in a while.

Heading out into the gathering darkness, the air was still warm yet the wind carried a cooling crispness, instantly refreshing. The Spaniard pulled out a packet of smokes and lit up, the amber glow at its tip waving to and fro, like a will-o'-the-wisp.

The bartender nodded his assent at Percy's question, "those two don't seem to be enjoying themselves though! Are they with your party?" He gestured over at two men who appeared at the door; they are clearly frustrated with one another and sat down at a table in the corner to continue their argument in hushed tones. Percy recognised them as two of the academics from the expedition.

Airbornexo wrote:[The bartender] gestured over at two men who appeared at the door; they are clearly frustrated with one another and sat down at a table in the corner to continue their argument in hushed tones. Percy recognised them as two of the academics from the expedition.
Jurgen sipped his beer and nodded towards the door, saying to Professor Eckhart, "Although those two over there do not seem to be having a good time..."

Carl & Kirsten,Ellie shoots a relieved glance at Carl and Kirsten, "I'd be glad of the company, those sailors treat a girl rough if you'd let 'em!" She looked at a brass clock hanging over the bar, "thirty more minutes and then I'll have to go and look, perhaps the blonde, Freya was it, could look out for him should he arrive late looking for me?"
Suddenly everyone's attention was drawn by the two arguing academics as they raised their voices in anger, shouting at one another.

A bespectacled, bearded younger man spat, "YOU ARE MAD! WE WILL NEVER FIND IT!" The other a rotund, bald man stood angrily almost overturning the small table and then threw his drink in the other man's face. "I HAVE NEVER HEARD SUCH IMPUDENCE!" He uttered and then stormed from the bar in the direction of the terrace, his face thunderous.

Alvaro leans against the balustrade and watched the man as he stormed out into the night air, mopping his brow with a yellow silk handkerchief.

Jurgen rushed over to help the younger man. "Are you alright? This must be the night for overturned drinks," he said, speaking English with a pronounced German accent, "I just finished cleaning my own shirt." He pulled the lower part of his shirt forward and pointed out the wet areas that had yet to dry from where the Professor had doused him.
For Airbornexo,Does Jurgen recognize the younger man?

The professor finds the altercation between the two academic types to be curious, so he follows Jurgen. "I can vouch for his shirt"--Prof. Eckhart smiles--"because I was the culprit.

"I am Professor Paul Eckhart, expedition botanist. Who are you?"

Jurgen OOC,He has seen him on the plane but has had little to do with the academics up until now sticking with the more 'grounded' individuals.

Kirsten & Carl,Ellie filled the pair in with a sketched description: Tall, with broad shoulders and a powerful build, Thomas Werner's occupation is obvious even to those unfamiliar with his career, that of an athlete. Short, blond hair and pale blue eyes accentuate a face that is handsome, if somewhat brutish. "But don't let that put you off, he's a sweety!" She laughed, then frowned concerned about her friend's whereabouts.
Alvaro could see the older man, rotund and bald paced angrily before walking down the steps to the small ornamental garden where he is quickly lost to the gloom.

Inside the bespectacled, bearded man greeted Jurgen and Paul, his eyes still flashed with anger and embarrassment. "I am sorry that you had to see that!" He sizes them up, "you're on the expedition too, it really is just too exciting! Tobias cannot see the potential the blinkered fool! I'm Albrecht, Alby, one of the archaeologists working for the team."

Alby's eyes took on an almost manic wideness as he turned on his new found audience: "He thinks that there is a good chance that we can find the Sceptre of Atlantis! I have consulted many texts in Bibliothèque nationale de France and in Berlin; the Cthaat Aquadingen is most tantalising in its promises of power!

I am convinced that its location lies where our expedition is headed, but I believe the existence of the Sceptre itself to be mere fiction, a local legend to intimidate local enemies.

That fat fool Tobias refuses to even acknowledge the possibility and is convinced of its reality. That and damn Aryan genetics on the brain - trying to prove our mighty Fuhrer's notions of a master race is all he cares for... 'Come Alby let's measure some more skulls'... imbecile! He thinks we can find it and use it to further the Aryan cause!
"

Meanwhile...

Outside the man turned at Alvaro's call, "I need a moment to clear my head....I saw you dance earlier and before on the plane?"

Prof. Eckhart speaks aloud, but neither to Jurgen or Alby, he is bemused by what has been said. "The 'Sceptre of Atlantis.' How foolish of Wahl . . . and Eichelberger--I respected him--I thought he was a man of science." He asks Alby: "The Fuhrer believes in this nonsense?"
Jurgen leaned in and lowered his voice so that only the Professor and Alby could hear, "What is the legend of this scepter? If this scepter is not a fiction, then of what benefit would it be?"
Prof. Eckhart listens carefully.

OOC Handy - There is no reason why Carl and Kirsten can't overhear this conversation nearby.

"Who knows what the Fuhrer believes these days! He has always been very much swayed by the current fad, I believe Himmler has put ideas of occult power into his mind." He looked suddenly guilty, like he has spoken out of turn, "I am sure the Fuhrer knows best though."

"Legend? Why the Sceptre is widely believed to harness the power of the lightning! Possibly some sort of fusion, unknown to science. I personally don't think the Sceptre has any 'mystical' or 'supernatural' powers, if it actually exists at all.

Tobias thinks, at best, that the sceptre will help the Fuhrer conquer the world. At worse, he figures that its discovery would lend more credence to the theory that the ancient Thule reached far and wide in world. I agree in this respect, any site It would also provide clues and archaeological proof of the Thule's existence!
"

On the terrace...

"Yes, yes maybe you are right. Alby does infuriate me so," He dabbed at his forehead before returning his handkerchief to its pocket. He proffered his hand, "Tobias Bäcker, your servant, and also expedition archaeologist."

Back inside...

Ellie glanced at her watch as the minute hand ticked round, "Five minutes?" She said to Carl and Kirsten, "you want to grab 'anything' from your rooms before we head out?"

Gear,I haven't even considered gear. I am sure I'd have a pistol and a perhaps a rifle, and a first aid kit and other medical gear. I'll have a .32 or 7.65mm automatic (whichever is more thematically and historically accurate to what Carl would have.) And how does a .30 lever action rifle sound? I wont take that with me tonight though. Just the pistol.

OOC,Kirsten would have a .32 automatic, and she keeps it on her person. She also has a machete listed with her equipment, but that would be in her room, as she wouldn't need it in an urban environment, and she doesn't need to go get it.
Image

"Five minutes it is," says Kirsten. "I have everything I need right here, so I think I'll remain." She surreptitiously pats her pistol so that only Ellie can see. She listens to the conversation across the room with interest while she waits.

Car goes up to his room, gets his pistol, some ammo in his pocket (clips?), and fixes his hair. On his way back out the door, he grabs a satchel that contains a first aid kit and general combat medicine gear (morphine, needle and stitches, etc.)

- I have been drinking, I doubt the locals have anything good besides infected water. About Thule, it's an ancient legend. It was the name the Greeks give to the far north land, where the barbarians lived; that could be anything from England to Scandinavia. The Germans think it was the original civilization of the aryans before they emigrated to different parts of the world. There isn't any real proof, but of course, the war of Troy was just a myth before Schliemann actually discovered the place, so if we can actually find a place that can be linked with Thule, it would change History. And it seems they hope to find something that can actually change the History now, and not just our vision of the past.

At the bar...

Alby gives an appreciative nod at Percy's interjection about the Thule, "Quite right young man, however if Himmler is to be believed the Thule are still living and breathing today, running our 'glorious' Third Reich!" He smirked at his own suggestion, to suggest he didn't think the idea was very likely.

He then responded to Jurgen's question, "The site; well that is something of a mystery even to me. The texts hint at locations but our guide promises he knows the way, I believe that I overheard Wahl saying that we were meeting him tomorrow before we depart...Alphonse De Smet, a Belgian explorer would you believe!" The named seemed familiar to the party, wasn't he the man that was mentioned in the briefing: He guided the first Congo expedition?!

On the Terrace...

Tobias
pulled up a seat near Alvaro, "He just won't see that there are greater things at stake on our expedition than similar scientific discovery. If we can find the Sceptre of Atlantis, Germany will rule every continent on Earth! Alby has done the reading, but he is blinkered to the truth. Somewhere in the Congo is a great treasure, if I can find the path...I'm sure I could find it!" He mopped his sweating brow once again...

In the Lobby...

Ellie joined Carl and Kirsten at the reception desk and arranged a ride into town. A horse and...well carriage was too grand a term for the 'cart' that was drawn round from the rear of the hotel to take them. Ellie clapped her hands onto her knees and laughed loudly, "They sure know how to treat guests in Tripoli!"

- I don't share anyone opinion. As I said before some times myth is simply a reality exagerated. We may find an ancient city and a sceptre. There are thousands of them in the museums over all the world and nothing changed. Or we can simply found some ruins. Or nothing at all, because it was simply a myth without any true base or the true localization was elsewhere. It is a jungle after all, not Europe.

Jurgen began to think that something was not right about their expedition, "That is the second time that Alby has spoken of myths surrounding this mission. A legendary weapon... The existence of the Thule and that they may be still alive and part of the German army command... Are we chasing ghosts? We must not be getting the full story; this is a lot of trouble to go to simply to investigate a myth."

The wagon headed into the streets, bouncing over potholes...continues in a new thread (watch this space)...

In the Bar...

Alby looked puzzled and Jurgen's comment, "no, no Alphonse left the last expedition at their second camp and headed back to civilization, well I think that was the case. He volunteered for this expedition as he feels responsible for their loss. I don't know the ins and outs of it but I believe there were other guides with that party. Wahl must trust him though and he knows the territory well." He shrugged as if not giving the matter much thought.

He turned to Percy, "Tobias...would you believe that we are actually quite good friends as long as we leave our professional opinions at the door. We have been arguing about one thing or another for years." He smiled, his temper all but dissipated by present conversations. Hearing mention of drinks he immediately pipes up, "Let me buy these, I insist" He promptly ordered a round for all those within earshot.

On the Terrace...

Tobias shook Alvaro warmly by the hand, "Well glad to have at least one person on my side. He's not a terrible person, Alby, but he is so short sighted it is a wonder he ever manages to find his way out of his museum library!" He paused, cocking his head, thinking, "I think I have a book you should read if you are really serious about helping me. I'm going for that stroll to clear my head, but come up to my room later and I'll let you have it for some bedtime reading. The room's 29 and I should be there after 10 o'clock." With that he turned and headed out into the garden...

Jurgen raises his beer, smiling broadly as he joins the toast with he colleagues , "Prost!"
Spoiler:
Jurgen attempted to spot any deceit in Alby's mannerisms, but he could not tell anything... *sigh*

The drink flowed, followed by another and then another. The bonding went well and new friendships were tentatively brokered between those present. Noticeably, those of the military element of the expedition were not drinking heavily, if at all. Wahl kept a tight ship and even in the relative safety of the hotel, his men were alert and guarded.

As the hands of the big lobby clock ticked to 11:00pm and the chimes delicately rang, a nervous porter ran into the bar and spoke feverishly to a quartet of soldiers.

OOC - Meta-moment - Each of the investigators are able to ascertain that each of their 'human player' counterparts are not fully supportive of either the Reich government or the Aryan ideals of the Nazi elite. They all have their own motivations. Alby is genial enough though a bit of a bore. Listen rolls to overheard the hushed conversation.

Prof. Eckhart is thinking about cotton sheets and a soft pillow . . .

Percy is thinking that he won't probably go to the nearest brothel after all he drank.

Jurgen maintains a passive smiling face, but focuses in on the conversation.

Eckhart and Jurgen,The porter was whispering something about a murder in the hotel grounds and that the police have been called...
The soldiers stood up almost as one almost overturning the small table, "Go find Koertig!" barked a corporal at one of the troopers and he hurried off. The drinks on their table had barely finished rattling as the man raced out of the room...

Prof. Eckhart whispers to Percy and Jurgen:

"The porter said there had been a murder--in the hotel grounds!"

Percy get's pale.
-Who was it? At least we have a good alibi.

"I have no idea. Shall we go outside and have a looksee?"

A look of concern crosses Jurgen's face as he responds to Percy in a low voice, "I'm afraid that these soldiers will not care about alibis..."

Jurgen continues to watch any soldiers who remain, if any do, so that he may hear any further information about what had happened. He swallows the remainder of his drink and says, "Excuse me while I get another drink. Would anyone else care for another"
OOC,if Jurgen sees that all of the soldiers have left, then he will casually walk along a meandering path to the bar, past their table, occasionally keeping his eye on the door. He will be looking for anything that the soldiers may have left behind or dropped.

-Nay, I prefer another drink. Come on, Jurgen let's drink another one.

"Okay."

Prof. Eckhart wanders towards the hotel entrance, ostensibly to refresh himself with the night air, but really to find out what is happening outside.

The soldiers had departed in a hurry and Jurgen noticed a deck of cards with a few marks scattered on the table alongside half finished drinks. He noticed that the majority of the beverages on the table were non=alcholic, these men were disciplined even when relaxing.

As the professor makes his way to the doorway, a soldier blocks his path; "if you could remain here for your own safety please Herr Professor," says the young man with a smile. "I'm sure we'll have everything back to normal in a few moments."

At the bar more drinks are poured, and those in the mind to notice see that the garden terrace is an unguarded egress...

"Yes, of course. 'Safety'? . . . Can you tell me what this is about? Is someone hurt? I am a medical man, as well, you know."

The young soldier smiles reassuringly again, "There has been an incident in the hotel, everything will be back to normal in a moment I'm sure. I think that is has gone beyond the help a doctor could give..."

An apprehensive look crosses his face momentarily and behind him out in the hotel lobby Prof. Eckhart could see Wahl striding down the staircase, his face thunderous.

"Oh, it's Standartenführer Wahl. Can us civilians be of any use to the military?"

Jurgen slows at the table that was just vacated by the soldiers, stumbles a bit, then rights himself and continues moving in the direction of the bar.
OOC,Jurgen stumbled on purpose to get a closer look at the table, under it, and anything the might be around that area.
He then hailed the bartender and ordered another drink for himself and Percy. I have no intention of drinking any further alcohol, though Jurgen, but I will carry it to maintain the impression for others that I am continuing to enjoy myself.

Once he has his drink, Jurgen then turns and winks in a way that only Percy can see, saying in a low voice, "Shall we get some fresh air?" Jurgen sidles towards and out onto the garden terrace.

Wahl looked furious and paused momentarily to speak with the Prof. at the entrance to the bar, "Professor, be assured that I am personally handling this matter now. It appears that one of our expedition has managed to get himself killed somehow, it is most inconvenient! Now if you would return to the bar I must meet with the head of police and iron out any delays that may stop us." With that he turned on a perfectly polished jackboot and headed towards reception. The young soldier looked pointedly at the Professor, "you heard him sir, if you would return to the bar please."

Alby talked, unconcernedly to Alvaro when suddenly a soldier came into the bar and took him by the elbow, "you are requested by the Standartenführer. You will come with me immediately" The expression on the soldiers face does not say request however, but order.

Jurgen and Percy found the terrace free of people and the crisp night air made standing there pleasant indeed, the sound of a fountain was almost musical and a faint breeze stirred the surrounding trees.

'Takes your hads off me soldier' Alvaro immediately replies when the soldier grabed him. He readjusted his shirt and jacket 'lead the way soldier and on the way tell me your name and rank'

Prof. Eckhart nods his assent, almost clicking his heels together, but not quite.

He notices that Jurgen and Percy have disappeared, decides to leave any snooping to the younger men, and walks back to the bar; passing Alvaro and his escort on the way.

Jurgen scans the terrace itself, including the fountain, and then walks to the edges to see if he notices anything unusual or interesting.
Spoiler:
Does this allow Jurgen to see any of the action in a nearby area?
He pours half his drink into a potted plant, smiling at Percy and says, "They make excellent drinks here, do they not?"

If he spots nothing of note, then he walks back into the bar area, moving towards the other doorway where the rest of the team are congregated.
