IC-Ep 2-Preparations(Everyone else)

Post by Mr. Handy »

Medical Lab - Styx Base, Pluto
0710 GMT - Tuesday, August 9, 2112

Major Natalia Orlova and Captain Karin Bauer led the group through the central module's corridors to an airlock that led to the tunnel to the laboratory module. Everyone passed through that and then the airlock at the end of the passage. They once again found themselves in a curving corridor, and Karin opened the door leading to the medical lab. It contained an empty bed, an examination table, a chair, a computer terminal, and various advanced medical equipment and instruments.

Story, Elizabeth, Lucius, and Brook followed them into the lab, and Sergeant Heinrich Kohl and Private Alison Silver brought up the rear.

Natalia nodded. "We will probably have a few minutes before they bring in the alien," she said.

"When we're done here, I'll escort you to the docking bay," Heinrich says to Lucius, as he leans back against the wall.

'I'm sorry there is only one chair." Karin heads over to her terminal and boots up. She quickly prepares some equipment. "We have to keep contamination to a minimum so please could you put these disposable gowns, masks and gloves on." She hands them out.
Spoiler:
Are we advanced enough to put a 'field' around the examination table and examine the alien remotely or am I going in with a scapel?

OOC,There are scanners that can help you see inside the creature and could be useful, but there is still no substitute for going in manually and taking samples.

Elizabeth takes the proferred gown, mask and gloves, and starts to put them on. "The creature ..." she asks hesitantly, "is it alive, or dead?"

"Of course," Heinrich mutters, as he likewise pulls on his gown, gloves and mask. "I'd assume it's the one Capt. Desjardins killed, but maybe they captured a second one. If that's the case, we should see if it knows anything about the plans for Lt.-Col. Bruce."

While putting on the gown and accessories Story says "I really hope the Captain didn't blow the poor thing to pieces. Of course it would have been better to have brought back one that was alive. It's kind of hard to negotiate with a corpse."

'Sergeant, you'd better be ready in case the alien looks dead but isn't actually. Sticking a scapel in any creature generally determines the issue one way or the other.' Karin grins and prepares the scanners around the examination table along with an impressive selection of surgical implements. " Okay, I'm ready, I guess they are carrying the creature in on a trolley. Mr Story, I can pull up the files on all alien lifeforms so far discovered if you would like to refresh your memory." Karin taps at the terminal which shows a short list of species.

Brook puts on the gown and gloves and looks curiously at the screen with the list of aliens."Do you think these aliens are native to Pluto, Story? If they are, then we're the aliens..." She looks down at herself in the medical get up. "Might as well be in these."

Story walks over to the terminal and begins to look over the list. "Not sure Brook, if they are then I'm afraid we could be on the brink of starting a war."

Lucius smiled with a node to Heinrich, "Thank you... I would appreciate that." He headed over to where the masks, gowns and gloves were and started putting them on. "I don't know anything about this sort of thing, but I sure would feel better if I had my dagger. All this talk about going to war, and we're still unarmed."

"I still have hope we can resolve this peacefully," said Natalia, also donning a gown, mask, and gloves. "These beings are obviously intelligent. That means we can reason with them, bargain with them. Imagine what peaceful relations with them would mean for Earth!"

Heinrich nods. "There's no sense being in a war unless we have to be. We humans sometimes have our hands full with ourselves, let alone... well, whoever this is."

"I'm a little concerned at cutting one up; it won't be good for our relations if we have to hand it back for their death rites and it's in bits. Hopefully we can get enough information without being intrusive." says Karin.

"Do you have scanning facilities that would give enough information without cutting it up?" asks Elizabeth. "I was wondering about the wisdom - for future relations - of cutting up an alien corpse too."

As he continues to look over the list of encounter aliens Story says "I know if I was an alien and you gutted one of my companions war would be most certain. So perhaps the best thing to do is treat the specimen with the dignity and respect that it deserves." Looks up at Karin.

"I quite agree," said Natalia. "Fortunately, these medical scanners can determine much without being intrusive."

The list of known alien species encountered included the Cybermen, beings that had once been human or at least human-like. They had augmented themselves through cybernetic enhancements to the point where they were no longer human. Devoid of emotion and very difficult to kill, they often sought to convert humans into more of their kind and had attacked Earth on multiple occasions. There was also an entry on the Ice Warriors, reptilian creatures from Mars that were well suited to surviving in its cold, harsh climate. They had attacked Earth once in the late 21st century in an attempt to change its atmosphere to one more to their liking. Additionally, though these creatures were native to Earth, there were files on beings named Silurians and Sea Devils. The former species are reptilian, and the latter amphibian. Some of them had awakened from a long hibernation to discover the planet they considered theirs in the hands of humans. In 2084 they joined forces and nearly caused humanity to destroy itself.
OOC,Everyone except for Elizabeth, Lucius, and Brook may roll History to see what more you know of them. They were unknown (or kept secret) in the companions' times.

Handy,Pants, just missed history (20) 1d100=23
"In that case I'll just put this out the way so as not to alarm the alien should it wake up." Karin picks up the tray of implements and puts it on the desk away from the examination table." "I'm afraid I didn't really study alien species; I was more interested in marine biology and human physiology."

"Medical lab, this is Colonel Patel," said the colonel's voice on the intercom. "The creature we are bringing in is still alive!"
Story,Story knew of the Cybermen already. They had attacked Earth on numerous occasions in the 20th and 21st centuries. In the 1970s their attempted invasion of Earth had nearly succeeded. Then in 1986 their homeworld of Mondas, the Earth's long-lost twin planet, entered the solar system. The Cybermen had landed in Antarctica to try to seize a weapon that could be used to destroy the Earth as Mondas absorbed its energy, but instead were thwarted when Mondas was prematurely overloaded with energy and was destroyed. Both of these attacks had been covered up, and few knew of them. After that, they made the planet Telos their base of operations. In 2070, the Cybermen returned from a long absence and attacked a base on the moon, intending to use its Graviton as a weapon against Earth, but they were defeated when the Graviton was turned against them. Later in the 21st century, a small squad of Cybermen infiltrated a space station in Earth orbit as part of another plot, but they too failed. He knew nothing of any activity by the Cybermen in the solar system in the early 22nd century, however. He also knew something of the Ice Warriors, who had a certain sense of honor and, unlike the Cybermen, were not always hostile. When they were, however, they were a force to be reckoned with. Their first known attack on Earth had come in the late 21st century and took advantage of transmat technology, but since then it was a long time before they were active again. The Silurians and Sea Devils, who had been given those names by humans, had been briefly active in the late 20th century, and then again in their 2084 attack. It was a long time after that before they tried anything else.
