Roll call! Who are the ten die-hards at Play@?

A little area for new users to say hello if they don't want to post in the recruitment threads just yet.

If it helps, I could take over some of the moderation, new members, etc. (not that we seem to get that many of those). Unfortunately, I don’t think I’d be much use on the technical side - I don’t know a whole lot about databases and the like.

What’s involved in managing it, Lee?
To be honest, I don't do anything (any more) - Mr Handy has done ALL the administrator/moderator work for YEARS and I take my hat off to him.

This site does deserve someone that can devote more than the few hours a year I get around to doing. I'm happy to discuss how things are to progress in the future.

In the meantime if anyone would like to help with running costs then they could buy me a gin or two https://ko-fi.com/lpcarnell
Thank you, Lee! I'd be the logical choice to take over, but I don't have a whole lot of extra time beyond what I already spend to keep the site running (as anyone waiting for Zombie Apocalypse Reanimated Chapter 2 to get moving knows). I don't know how long it would take to maintain the database and backups and to handle installing PHP mods and stuff, but if it's not a whole lot of time, I might be able to handle it. If you need someone to pay $180 per year to keep the site up and running, I could swing that.
Thank Mr H. your commitment to this site is probably the reason it's lasted this long. Here's my thoughts:
1) If there's an appetite to keep this site going and we (I) can cover (or mostly cover) the costs then I'm happy to keep things in place broadly as they are.
2) Ideally we'd change domain names - the current one could become an issue for me, as I do work for Chaosium now.
3) I'd deal with all the back-end, tech stuff.
4) Day to day running, Mr H carries on (and hopefully recruits help from the membership).

How'd we accommodate all this:
1) see if we can add a ko-fi/pay-pal button - would be absolutely voluntary to contribute though.
2) hold a poll to choose a new domain name (point the old one to the site once a new name is chosen).
3) I'd commit to 6 hours a month to install updates etc. and troubleshoot any issues.
4) ???? up to Mr H?

You're welcome, and I'm good with maintaining the status quo, with a new domain name. Congratulations on getting hired by Chaosium!

Hi,

So, hosting the site and database, etc. is $180 per 12 months (actually it's $165 but I didn't see any renewal notices so there was a $15 late fee) - this is a 'grandfathered in' fee for shared hosting on Host Dime. I don't believe this rate/service level is available any more.
SSL certificate is around $10 per year (the current cert expires October 18th. The domain name is around $10 a year as well.

A note on the hosting - The HW1 plan isn't available any more and 'reading between the lines' it's not really something that Host Dime are interested in supporting for much longer; it used to cost $72 per year, then $120 since 2019 and increased again this year.

Or perhaps www.playatyogsothoth.org.uk. I don't think we can use the yog-sothoth.com domain, as that's used by YSDC (with which this site is no longer affiliated).

We don't have to keep the .org.uk tld

playcthulhu is a pretty good name and playatyogsothoth (keeps in with the current branding). We could go with something more generic.
How about horrorbypost ?

PlayCthulhu.org.uk was available but there are plenty of other options - https://www.namecheap.com/domains/regis ... thulhu.com

If we’re not affiliated with yog-soth I wouldn’t be inclined to use that and I’m not sure horrorbypost really works? Perhaps people will think we just send unpleasant things through the mail… 😏

Yeah, we should probably make sure the name tells people what the site is.

Carnage_Lee is at #7 as would be a given as creator of this well of fiction!
Snapper, truly is #8

To adress the state of affairs, I have to congratulate on working for Chaosium! (I hope...)
Feels good if the site can remain up under another name.

What about Lovecraftian-horror-pbp.something ??

Should everything be saved, it would be great. Imagine the hours put in by the community. But I know, when hobby-stuff is hanging on one person it´s bound to fall when that person, for any reason, can´t continue. Many a site has fallen to that fate. This is hoping for a continuation under whichever name we decide. I for one has been here for a while, albeit with random disappearances. Best luck to all and - carry on!

Dave! Good to hear from you.
The site isn't going anywhere - it's all paid up for another year.

Happy to contribute a few dollars to whoever's costs if that helps. Various of you have provided me a great deal of so far free entertainment, especially Mr H and Kabukiman.

The only real upside to getting old is finally having some spare cash.
