Special Gaslight Character Considerations

The son of a sitter in the House of Lords has gone missing! Obviously, Lord Godfrey Sommers would like to avoid a scandal...

Special Gaslight Character Considerations

Post by Dr. Bloodworth »

If you roll a 10 for income and your investigator is a Crown subject, you have inherited the title Baronet (Bart. or Bt.)
When buying equipment, note that 1 pound equals about $5.

Etiquette is a special skill that measures your knowledge of social convention. Men have a base 20%, women a base 40%. It's a little sexist, but hey, that's the era for you. Add Etiquette to the class skill list for the Dilettante.

1D10 Roll......Credit Rating......Etiquette Bonus
1......L100......16%......+2%
2......L200......17%......+4%
3......L300......18%......+6%
4......L400......19%......+8%
5......L600......21%......+10%
6......L800......23%......+12%
7......L1000......25%......+14%
8......L1500......30%......+16%
9......L6000......75%......+18%
10......L10000......99%......+20%

Here are my character creation rolls:
Character creation rolls (STR, CON, POW, DEX, APP, SIZ, INT, EDU, Wealth) (3d6=9, 3d6=7, 3d6=10, 3d6=7, 3d6=7, 2d6+6=12, 2d6+6=13, 3d6+3=13, 1d10=2)

They're pretty bad (a total of 78 stat points). Are they bad enough to get a mulligan?

Just did my rolls:
Character creation roll (STR, CON, POW, DEX, APP, SIZ, INT, EDU, Income) (3d6=10, 3d6=14, 3d6=7, 3d6=7, 3d6=9, 2d6+6=16, 2d6+6=15, 3d6+3=9, 1d10=2)

I think they're pretty ok, apart from that income and the POW and DEX, which are a bit ouchy, but hopefully won't be a problem.

I'm thinking a struggling/beginning female authoress.

Well, even the L200 income still puts you in the middle class for the time period, so you're still decently well off.

With the fairly low EDU, I'm picturing someone who struggled their way out of a lower-class part of town.

Good point re the EDU. Should be able to justify that easily enough. Even middle class education at the time was often very limited, especially for women.

Whenever anybody has their characters' skill points and everything allocated, put your character statistics in the CHARACTERS thread below this one.

I'm afraid I'm not having much luck signing in to the old castle. Nor do I know how to stat roll as above. Here are my rolls for Maud Marrick:
STR 13, DEX 15, CON 11, INT 11, WIS 15, CHA 13
2d6+6=11, 2d6+6=12
3d6+6=15
1d10=2

So:
Str 13, Dex 15, Con 11, Pow 15, App 13, Int 11, Siz 12, Edu 15, wealth 2.

If all this is okay I will carry on creation of Maud Marrick and post below.

On the plus side, Alicia is quite tough. 15 HP, and she gets a damage bonus.

Thanks! I've actually rolled worse stats than that. Once I got a total of 75 points between all 8 stats, including two 4s and an 8.

Here are my new rolls - much better!
Character creation rolls (STR, CON, POW, DEX, APP, SIZ, INT, EDU, Wealth) - second try (3d6=7, 3d6=12, 3d6=11, 3d6=14, 3d6=16, 2d6+6=17, 2d6+6=15, 3d6+3=13, 1d10=1)

I have 15 HP as well, though I'll just miss the damage bonus. I'm a bit poorer now, but I think it's worth the trade. I had been considering making him a valet for one of the other PCs, but so far there's nobody who could employ him. I was also considering a soldier, a veteran of the Sudan.

What I did for my rolls (which you can see if you click on the links) is put "3d6;3d6;3d6;3d6;3d6;2d6+6;2d6+6;3d6+3;1d10" in the Dice text box.

Sounds like a good explanation -- I was at first thinking that the high SIZ and low STR were a bit incongruous, but a veteran soldier who hasn't been keeping in the best of shape in the intervening time explains that away well.

Richard Maurice is a wealthy merchant (importing dyes, spices, furs and fabrics from India and Africa). I will generate a salesman of some kind. Focusing on social skills like persuade, fast talk, bargain, accounting, credit rating, a foreign language and maybe the Etiquette that you wrote.

Good point. Thanks for that. I'm going to sort out my full character sheet tomorrow. I'm slightly tweaking Alicia's character occupation to be a working journalist, albeit one who's also an aspiring author, working for a mix of the tabloid press and producing articles for various magazines (there were masses then). That's a better fit for her relatively modest EDU, and leaves some nice scope for roleplaying opportunities.

Are we allowed to swap stats? I'd like to switch my STR and APP. That would make more sense for the character I have in mind too: very strong, and with a scar or two.

Aine, your character should actually get a lot more skill points. You're probably going by what it says in Quick Start or in an earlier edition of the rulebook. Characters get EDU x 20 occupational skill points and INT x 10 hobby skill points. Also, no skill starts at 00% except Cthulhu Mythos. All the others have a base skill level of at least 01%, so that gives you a few more skill points to spend. Oh, and you should probably remove Heavy Energy Weapon and Light Energy Weapon from the skill list, which it seems you copied from a character sheet from The Ninth Planet. ;)

EDIT: Oh, yeah, Art and Craft skills need a subskill to specify which Art or Craft you've learned. They can be taken multiple times.

Thanks Mr Handy. You are right; I've just checked and I'm using 5th ed.Call of Cthulhu and 1st ed. Dark Designs. I did wonder about the dust and ancient blood stains on the covers.

Sure, go ahead.

Just for the record, if anyone else needs to swap scores out, I'll generally allow it. Just on though, no mass shuffling about of stats.

Crap, I was going to do this and just plain forgot. I've been so swamped. I came up with a character idea, I just have to put him together.
