Z-Day + 1 - 8:54 AM Central Time - On I-80, near Waverly, Nebraska
On the highway-
Ryuu Kin finally reached I-80 and began trudging along it to the southwest. He had been hiking and camping in the wilderness for some time and was anxious to get back to civilization. The night before last there had been a spectacular meteor shower, which he had enjoyed watching while camped out under the stars. The following day he hadn't seen a soul out in the middle of nowhere, and the solitude had been enjoyable. He had been able to get away from it all.
That had all ended earlier this morning. A young couple had attacked him as he had been walking through the woods. Both of them had had blank expressions and red eyes, and they did not respond when he tried to speak to them, just continuing their advance. Their steps had been slow and clumsy, and the man's shoulder had a gash in it. The woman also had blood dribbling from her mouth and down her chin, but it did not seem to be her blood. He had dodged their initial, awkward attacks as they tried to grab and bite him. He easily kept his distance and started shooting at them with his revolver. They took a few shots to the chest but somehow kept coming for him. It was only when he shot them in the head that they finally went down. Now he was down to his last three bullets.
Ryuu had no idea what was going on. He had tried his cell phone, checking it for the first time in two days, but he could not get a signal. He had made for I-80, the busiest highway around that cut across Nebraska from west to east. Now that he had reached it, he saw no traffic in either direction. From his maps, he judged that he was a short distance northeast of Waverly, which itself was northeast of Lincoln, the largest nearby city. He was quite some distance southeast of Omaha, which would be quite a long hike. The highway would eventually reach both cities.
