On the roof-
Chester Johnson sat on the roof of Brooks High School, finishing up his breakfast and keeping an eye on both the EMP device and the school's surroundings. Dawn had just broken, and he was taking the day's first shift on duty up here, having brought breakfast up with him. Last night, Stephanie Bridges and Elijah Smith had completed the second EMP device. It was now loaded onto the old school bus, which Donald Woodridge and a few others had managed to get working again and to reinforce by welding steel plates to it. Last night they had also held a dance to celebrate in the gymnasium. The lovely Dr. Liz Somerville, looking amazing in a black strapless dress, had danced with him by the romantic candlelight. While she was a good deal younger than him, he imagined that they might have a future together - if anyone could be said to have a future any more.

On the roof-
After several minutes of waiting, Chester heard the voice of Dr. Helene Saunders as she came up the stairs to the roof. "Chester, I'm taking over for you," she said. "You get on that bus. It'll be leaving in a few minutes."

"You're just going to stay here?" he asked.

Helene emerged onto the roof. "The cops will be back soon enough, and we'll take the EMP device to their station. I'll look after it. You need to stay with your students."

"Well...if you're sure. Goodbye, Dr. Saunders. Take care of yourself."

"You too. Now get on that bus with those kids." She shook his hand and watched him leave down the rear fire escape.

Field Trip

On the roof-
Helene watched from the roof as the bus left. Nothing happened until about a quarter to eight, when she caught sight of a green Volkswagen minibus followed by the red Mustang as they approached the school from the north. She waved to them.

On the roof-
Helene saw the driver of the Mustang wave back. Both vehicles drove alongside the school until they found a hole in the fence large enough to drive through. They soon reached the parking lot behind the school and pulled in there.

On the roof-
Jimmy Kowalski got out of the Mustang and headed for the entrance. Detective Gretchen Ehrlich also got out of the minibus and approached the entrance with Jimmy. Helene looked over the edge of the roof. "Is everything all right?" she asked.

"We rescued the women," said Gretchen, "but we have several wounded - including Officer Wheeler. Misisng and broken legs seem to be today's theme. The Jamaicans are all dead, not counting Lisa Marley. We have a couple of others in custody. Where are the doctors?"

"They've all left in the school bus when they evacuated the children - except for Kyle. We've still got him locked up."

"Could you help the injured?"

"I'm sorry, Detective. I'm a Ph.D., not a medical doctor. I know basic first aid, but it sounds like the wounded need more than that. What about at that police station of yours?"

"There's a medical examiner there. The M.E. is more used to working on the dead than the living, of course, but we all have to make adjustments. We're low on space in the vehicles, but we can send someone back to pick up anyone who stays behind at the school and the EMP device. It would fit in the Marleys' minibus."
