IC-SWORD-Three for the Road(Lara/Caitlin/Sven)

A new day dawns, and with it new horrors. Tensions are rising at Warren Air Force Base, where traitors lurk behind the scenes and the fate of the world may be at stake. A daring mission to Montana is launched, where an isolated ranch receives new visitors - and trouble. In Omaha, the zombie menace seems to be over. The few surviving law enforcement personnel attempt to restore order, but criminals are not going to make it easy for them. Preparations for evacuation are underway at Brooks High School, and a dangerous new threat lurks.

IC-SWORD-Three for the Road(Lara/Caitlin/Sven)

Post by Mr. Handy »

Z-Day + 1 - 5:55 AM Mountain Time - 1 mile west of Flaxville, Montana
On the road-
Lara Voronova drove the battered pickup truck down the road to the west. The needle was on empty and had been for some time, but the old Ford kept going - much like she had. For months she had endured unspeakable abuse at the hands of vicious men, but now she was free. She was hurt, she was badly shaken, but she was still alive and she was finally free. Beside her sat Sven Petersen. The disc jockey had lost the love of his life, and his sorrow kept him from fully appreciating being seated between two lovely young ladies. Maybe one day he would love again, but the wounds were still raw and fresh. Caitlin Bell sat in the shotgun seat, navigating, and she actually had a shotgun. It was her father's, and it was all she had left of him. She had lost both him and her mother the day before. Now all that remained of her family was at her uncle's ranch - if anyone there had survived.

The truck rolled on to the west, pre-dawn light creeping around the edges of the horizon behind them, but it was still quite dark. To the left was a long fence. Finally, a pair of gates in the fence came into view ahead. Caitlin recognized them by the symbol of a bell above the gates, indicating that this was the Bell Ranch. They had finally made it. As she drove up to the gates, the pickup truck finally spluttered and died, coasting to a halt. It had run out of gas, but it had gotten them where they had wanted to go.

Lara checks the road ahead and then pulls the keys out of the ignition. She opens the door and exits, swapping the keys for the 9mm. She walks to the back of the truck and gets one of the backpacks and walks to the gates. There she waits for Caitlin and Sven to get ready. "Guess we have to take this slowly. And make sure we´re not mistaken for walkers."

Caitlin piled out and kept a wary eye about them. No way she was going to get caught off guard this late in the game. Then she turns her gaze to the house, looking for any sign someone might be there. "Just let me go first. They should recognize me for me."

Lara walks behind Caitlin, keeping the 9mm with the safety off aimed at the ground as she moves on.
She looks back at Sven, tilts her head as if saying "coming?"

On the road-
Sven shuffled out of the truck and joined the women at the gates. They were barred from the other side, a high fence stretching away from it in either direction. Though it was still dark, Caitlin could see the ranch house in the distance thanks to light coming from one of its windows.
OOC,Anyone may attempt a Spot Hidden roll at 1/5 skill to try to make out more details. The base skill is 25%, which would result in a 5% chance.

Spot Hidden,Spot Hidden / 5 = 6% (1d100=97), wow, I'm missing EVERYthing in these games, ain't I? =P
Caitlin looked along the fence. "Should we unbar it or try to climb it?"

OOC,Actually, your skill divided by 5 would be 7 (or possibly more if your Spot Hidden skill increased last chapter; you still need to roll for that), but that roll is still a critical failure. You probably don't even see the light in the window. If you want to try to climb the fence, roll Climb. The base skill is 40%. Only one person needs to get over the fence in order to unbar the gates and let the others inside. You can't unbar the gates from this side.

Getting up to the gates, Lara squints her eyes and watches for movement over at the ranch house. What´s that?

Handy,Ah, couldn't remember if I had or hadn't. Actually, she's more wondering of all three climbing over so they didn't HAVE to unbar the gates =)

OOC,You could do that, but it would take a lot longer. Much easier to have the first person who succeeds in climbing over the fence unbar the gates long enough to let the other two inside, and then close the gates and put the bar back in place.

Lara tries to get a foot hold of the fence but fails to get very far. Instead she takes a knee and puts her hands on the knee with the palms up. "Put your foot here, Cat. I´ll hoist you up so you can get over and unbar the gate."

Caitlin throws the shotgun over her back. "I really don't like the idea of unbarring it, even with the coast clear, but I suppose it's easiest." She steps in the stirrup Lara provided and lifted herself up.

On the ranch grounds-
Caitlin scrambled over the fence with ease, removed the bar, and opened the gates long enough for Lara and Sven to enter before closing them and replacing the bar. The house was visible in the distance, light coming from one of the windows. It was too dark for Sven to make out any details from here.
Lara Vornova,Lara was able to pierce the darkness with her vision, and she saw people moving around in the room beyond, which looked to be a dining room.

Caitlin brought the shotgun to bear again and started moving towards the house. "Those lights have never looked so welcoming..."

Lara continues after Caitlin. "There´s movement in the dining room over there.", she whispers. She feels elated as they had to be real people. Now, they only had to look where they were going. At that Lara looks out for tripwires or such along their path, considerably slowing her pace.

Syrinx,Good idea! Detect Trap! So not used to doing that. Never played a Rogue in D&D =P

"If I was holing up in the ranch, I´d sure prep the road leading up to the main house. "
SSior,What?! A head slap! I better watch myself :D Rogue, nah. I do play a Barbarian in a Pathfinder game at Herocentral, though. Well, my point with the post was more that we won´t rush head on without being careful. But if I do get points in detect trap, I´ll be glad. Would be cooler to have a ring that glows when in danger.

On the front porch-
Lara carefully led the way up the front walk to the ranch house. She looked around, but there was no sign of any traps. She, Caitlin, and Sven soon reached the front porch. The front door of the house stood closed before them.
OOC,That Spot Hidden success earlier counts as your trap detection. If there had been any, you would have seen them.

Caitlin thought for a second. "You two might want to get back. Who knows if it's them inside, and even if it is, there's no guarantee they won't just start shooting." With them a safe yet close distance away, Caitlin knocks on the door.

Lara and Sven move to the rear of the ranch house. Lara keeps her gun ready and takes post on the side where the door opens. (Not risking getting the door slammed in her face.)
