Z-Day + 1 - 5:55 AM Mountain Time - 4 miles east of Scobey, Montana
In the dining room-
Jake Bell sat with his family around the dining room table as they finished their breakfast. They had already woken up about an hour ago to milk the cows, slop the pigs, and carry out other early morning tasks around the Bell Ranch. Today was no ordinary day, however. The world as they had known it had turned upside down the day before, when a mysterious infection had apparently broken out. Infected people had come first from the nearby tiny village of Flaxville, about a mile to the east, and later from other nearby farms and ranches. Then they had come from Scobey in greater numbers. They tried to eat everyone they came across - except each other. Those who were bitten became like them. They were also very resilient, even surviving gunshots to the chest and continuing to attack. They had soon learned that the surest way to kill them was to shoot them in the head. Unfortunately, this was discovered too late to save the ranch hands, but Jake's family had survived: his wife Mary, his son Clyde, and his daughter-in-law Veronica. Jake's brother Steve had a farm near Crawford in northwestern Nebraska where he lived with his wife Myra. Jake's niece Caitlin had been staying there. None of the Bells knew whether this was happening there or what had happened to them. The attacks had dwindled throughout the day, and by evening there had only been a few stray infected people. By midnight the attacks had stopped, though the survivors had still taken shifts watching for them.
