This thread is for general Out of Character discussion, whether game-related or not. There is a separate thread for character creation, but feel free to ask questions here if you want.

Just a quick comment about background, I'm not interrested in the characters history per se, your background should help make sense of your character and any wild and unussual skills you might have.

Here is the description for one of the charaters from the last set of playtesting.

Sukhveer Toor:
She is dark-haired, laughs a lot, tips in at 140 pounds, is 5 feet 5 inches tall, is 26 and will probably get a divorce unless her parents can arrange for her to marry a mountain climber. Her parents are traditional Indians who want to see their daughter succeed, but are better kept in the dark about Suhky's non traditional past times.

A Computer programmer by trade, she went to UCL(University College London), where, when she wasn't away with the university Venture Club studied Computer Science and maths. She left university three years ago and has been employed by Argos Trading, a faceless City forex trading firm ever since. By the time she left university with a 2:1, Sukhy had climbed Mont Blanc, Mount McKinley and made an attempt on the Eiger. Since she left University there have been three peaks in the Himalayas.

When she isn't climbing, Sukhy runs the eight miles into work every morning and works out most evenings. Sukhy has taken up Krav Maga after an unfortunate incident with some drunks one night last autumn when she was returning home. Last year she used her annual bonus to pay for some flying lessons although hasn't found the time to continue with it since.

Hope that gives you some idea of the sort of thing I'm looking for.

Sounds good. I need to think about character concept, but I'll get something pretty quick. Right now just leaning towards the dusty old professor. I actually haven't played one of those yet. ;)

I was thinking of rolling up the professor, but my unique ability to roll 7 or less on EDU for all my characters persisted again. Rest of the stats were fine, but that 1 throws the whole character in the garbage unless I want to be 80. At least it was higher than my guy for the pit. Crap, just crap. Now I need to come up with another character with a 2nd grade education.

BenTheRat sent you a PM, send me a link to all the stats we'll work something out.

Hahaha, so much for that. G was gratious enough to let me have a re-roll. Invis-castle slapped me across the face and said you were an uneducated slob before, and you still are!!

I rolled a 7 again on 3d6 for edu for the awesome 10 and still in high school. So I'm thinking of doing something besides the prof. It's all good.

I've added some equipment to my character sheet.

Also, since my flight just landed, shouldn't I be in Arrivals rather than Departures?

It's funny, but I was in Heathrow in early May 2008 during a trip to London.

All worked out don't worry :)

Kit wise - no camera for the holiday or does she rely on the smart phone?

There's a digital camera on my list - it's the last item. I had put it there last night. The smartphone can function as a camera, but the digital camera is much better at it.
BenTheRat wrote:I hope its ok if our talk is more American than British.
Like HPL himself, I've always been an Anglophile. I've watched a lot of British TV and movies and read a lot of British fiction, and I've picked up on British spelling and phrases (hence my use of the word "holiday" instead of "vacation"). I welcome the opportunity to unleash my inner Brit, so I'll be using them in my character's speech and thoughts. I don't mind if everyone else speaks American, though. ;)

Having lived not far from Golders Green in London during my student days, I figure your Israeli accent English will probably be about right :)

Like I said, have fun, please don't worry about how you sound. Clearly somethings don't work in the UK the same way they work in the US or Israel and I may have to pick you up on things if they effect the story, but only then. Please don't worry about how you sound - Just enjoy the game.

I'm doing fine. Well versed at play-by-post ... this isn't nearly as confusing as having two separate groups in two separate areas talking about two separate situations.

Re: General OOC Discussion.

Posted: Mon Aug 15, 2011 12:47 am
by Mr. Handy
I'm fine with it the way it is. It's only the situation that's confusing, but then again it's supposed to be. I know how difficult it can be as a Keeper to have multiple threads describing the same situation from different perspectives (the start of Space Oddity was like that). Keeping them in sync is a nightmare, especially when players are interacting with other PCs, as people will be acting independently before they are aware of what those in the other threads are doing (since they're not allowed to read them). It's better to just keep us in the same thread when we're in the same location.

Gents, just an aside but I will do my utmost to only ask for skill roles when success would not otherwise be automatic. On this basis if I ask for a skill check and you are successful, then you can automatically mark the skill on your chracter sheet for an experience check at a later date.

We'll do experience checks between chapters, or where there is a clear period in the story when characters might reflect on their past deeds.

No one has a phone or mobile device, nor will they have cameras. These items are may hold evidence to the planning of a terrorist act and have been (signed for and) removed. Your hand luggage is layed out on the floor in the far corner and several trolleys with suitcases and the like have passed through the lounge to points elsewhere which would imply the police have removed luggage from planes where necessary.

Wow walk into a police interview and the first thing you yanks do is lawyer up. Interrestingly not one of the GB playtesters felt they needed a solicitor until after they'd seen the CCTV footage. Not sure what that says for the US legal system or the poorly placed trust of my British countrymen. :)

I didn't ask for a solicitor until after seeing the CCTV footage (which in my case wasn't actually incriminating), and it wasn't because of that.

Re: General OOC Discussion.

Posted: Sat Aug 27, 2011 8:29 am

Oh I'm not saying it was wrong in anyway, it is eminently sensible. It was more the fact the GB players all dociley accepted things as were and allowed themselves to be rather roughly interrogated, under circumstances where any solicitor would have, I believe laughed at the police.

Library Use

Gents as I suspect this is going to come up frequently. Here is how I generally handle Library Use

1) Library rolls will always involve a time element from hours to days.
2) The more generalised a search the longer it will take before you get a Library Use roll to see if you come up with something useful.
3) Even a very specific search will take an hour or so, while a more generalised search may take several days or more.
4) More thorough searches will increase the chances of success but also increase time.
5) Less thorough searches will decrease the time but never below a specific threshold and will always make the chance of success more difficult.
6) Multiple people working together on the same research still only get 1x Library Use roll but can either decrease the overall search time or make the search more thorough.

OOC: Recap.

OK Just a quick recap to remind everyone what is going on. Your investigations brought you to an old apparently closed tatoo artists - the shop's window and door are covered in faded newspaper as though business has been closed for several years. The shop is located in the middle of an arcade of shops on a quiete residential street in Ealing, West London.

Greg and Liz tried to gain access to the shop but their efforts were rebuffed by two thugs who were hanging around outside. A walk by by Jacob minutes later aroused no suspicion from the thugs, but obtained no greater insights into the shop or its owners.

Liz has managed to hack into three seperate WiFi enabled CCTV's which give reasonable coverage of the back and front of the shop.

Clay has aquired a variety of weapons for you all.

I'm assuming you're now all off to the shop in order to break in, but didn't want to preempt anything vis a vis planning, especially as I suspect some people are not going to be to enthused about breaking the law.

That's the plan. Liz had qualms about breaking the law, but those went out the window once they snatched Elira. What she's done with the cameras is already illegal, but she's covering her tracks (and the others' tracks as well).

Actually, it might be fun to play a diplomat in CoC. I'll have to try that sometime.

Greg has no qualms about breaking the law to save a girl ... but he might have moral issues when it comes to causing harm to others. Kind of against the whole oath thing doctors take so seriously.

I was thinking more of Royya's character Jacob Greenberg who is a solicitor and has already quite sensibly veered away from breaking the law.

Anyway gents, you can consider yourselves returned to the arcade of shops, evening is approaching. I awaite with baited breath the cunning/destructive plans you concoct for entering the shop.

Yes, I thought about it, but on the other hand I thought that a good citizen would help someone if he would think that he is in danger and another thing ... this is a game ... if you wanna have fun you'll have to do some crazy stuff.

You can take a business card, but Liz said phone/email if he thought of anything else so there is no automatic reason why he should. Bear in mind that his company didn't have anything to do with the onwards sale of the house, so they wont necessarily know anything about the current owners.

Liz did get a special on a Spot Hidden roll (roll of 7, skill 55%) and she critically failed an Accounting roll (roll of 99, skill 10%). She got a critical success on Library Use (roll of 4, skill 60%). She had several consecutive successes at Computer Use when hacking and editing the CCTV camera video, though none of them were good enough to qualify as a special or a critical.

This is essentially the end of PT1 (The Girl With Fire in Her Eyes) - I am happy to RP the handover of the children to the father (text book solution well done Mr Handy) ...or alternately I can summarise and you can move directly to experience and should you desire continue to PT2.

OK Mr Handy feel free to RP the conversation with the Father.

We need to do experience checks.

Remember only one skill check per skill - roll D100 and get over the skill you get +1D10 skill points for that skill
In addition for each fumble with the skill you gain +1 Skill point (I'm of the strong belief we learn from our mistakes)

Everyone gets +D6 SAN for rescuing the girls.

I'm off to investigate the secrets of Morocco next week, so we can start with CH2 when I return on the 9th March.

CH2 will kick off a month or so after the events of CH1. I'd like to know what people have been up to in the intervening time this will also effect character development, depending on what you get up to.

Mr Handy - not sure you can do this, but would you be so kind as to put all the CH1 posts into a separate folder so we can start CH2 afresh

by Mr. Handy
Accounting (10) increases by 1 to 11 due to fumble
Computer Use (66) increases by 1 to 67
First Aid (55) does not increase
Library Use (60) does not increase
Listen (55) does not increase
Occult (35) increases by 6 to 41
Psychology (30) increases by 2 to 32
Spot Hidden (55) does not increase
Handgun (20) increases by 3 to 23
Shotgun (30) increases by 2 to 32, and by 1 more to 33 due to fumble

Sanity (69) increases by 5

Liz will spend the following month or so finishing up her studies for the semester at Cambridge. The semester and her exams should be over by the middle of May 2008, when the game resumes, giving her free time to continue with whatever happens in Chapter 2.

I've created a Chapter 1 subforum for you, which you wouldn't have been able to do yourself. You can move the Chapter 1 threads into it using the Moderator Control Panel, but I can do that too if you prefer. You may want to wait on moving the threads until we finish wrapping up Chapter 1.

Jacob:
San - San increase (1d6=1)
Skills:
Art - Increase Art (1d100,1d10=[4], [5]) - Fail.
Law - Law increase (1d100,1d10=[71], [7]) - Pass +7.
Listen - Listen increase (1d100,1d10=[99], [3]) - Pass +3.
Spot Hidden - Spot Hidden increase (1d100,1d10=[8], [9]) - Fail.
Fist/Punch - Fist/Punch increase (1d100,1d10=[100], [9]) - Pass +9
Handgun - Handgun increase (1d100,1d10=[62], [3]) - Pass +3

So, Sanity is back to normal 70/70 with this 1 point. I can't believe I failed the 5% Art roll ... oh well, at least I raised the other skills quite nicely.

Jacob is going to resume his plans visiting Israel, he definitely needs a vacation and rest for his leg with his family. He will travel to Jerusalem to consult with Rabbies of the mystical Kabala about what happened before he returns to London.

You could use the dice roller on Dark and Moody. There's a link in Imp's signature, but it's pointing to the old site, which no longer exists. You'll need to replace the "yabb2" with "dm" to make it work.

Dice rolling is a 'forum' option that has to be actioned in the Admin Control Panel. Having said that.... those options didn't work - so I edited the database directly to allow dice rolling. So it works on this game - I'll have to check the MOD to see the edits needed for the ACP options. While this MOd hasn't been abandoned the author doesn't do much work on it.. so it's 'as is'.

Anyways - hope it helps :)

Re: OOC: General Discussion.

The dice rolling is a bit clunky - it relies on a heavily modified BBCode at the core. Rolls are stored in a db table - this is why they can only be seen after posting - as that is when the 'roll' takes place. There's supposed to be math functions included but I've never gotten that to work properly :(

My suggestion to have things work a little more smoothly is to set up a dedicated topic for dice rolls. Players/Keeper then make their rolls in that thread... with explanations (Character, reason, skill(s) etc). and you link that result in the game thread... YMMV

Hi BenT,

Ok, WOW guys!! This one sure got exciting in the house with the fire vampire, and 4 hostiles. That was impressive that everyone got out alive. Guess I have to thank Handy for saving Clay. Appreciate that. Ch 2 looks like it should be quick to catch up on.

Looks exciting, wish I was here for all of it. Though I think the NPC Clay had a lot more ideas than I would have come up with. ;)

I've just played Clay as a small time hood who knows who to ask in order to get things people in the more normal walks of life would have problems getting.

Its always a cash only deal ;)

You're welcome. Yeah, that was a tough one! Liz was lucky to not only take down one of the baddies but to kill two fire vampires all by herself, and to get out unscathed (apart from a little smoke inhalation) - and I'd thought of her as a non-combat character!

Sorry I've been slacking lately. Would have been nice to head over to the professor's house with Greg, but my loss I'm sure. Crap ... doesn't seem like I'm at either place. Oh well, let's say Greg ran to get medical supplies - a make-shift triage kit in the event something bad happened. You can tell me where to slide in next.

BTW - I haven't lost interest in the game, it's just hard to find the time to sit down for RP.

Hey Ben just wanted to make sure you're ok with the way Albert is non-plussed by your intimidation efforts.

Albert is a cocky, arrogant man who has a little bit of 'short man syndrome'. He has spent most of his professional life around musicians and 'A' list rock-stars and some of that egotistical attitude has rubbed off on him. He also has met many many bouncers, security guards and personal bodyguards to the stars so is not really intimated by 'hired muscle'. He saw a boy trying to be man when you threatened him.

That's not to say that he wasn't aware that he might get hit - his experience is that if he acts ballsy and brazenly with a bit chutzpah then he can normally get away with whatever he's trying to do. As far he is concerned - he got you so riled up that your anger made you swing wildly and miss him. He's received his fair share of black eyes and bruised ribs over the years.

I was just try to play him in character - and if you'd connected with that punch he more than deserved it!

No it doesn't bother me. I personally thought it was not very beleavable though. I can see someone act that way around other people in a bar or something, but alone, in a basement. Eh not so much. I can see someone being cocky, but name calling I thought was just asking for a death sentence. If your guy was an NPC I would have just knocked him out and tied him up. After breaking a couple bones.

So I think things played out differently because we were both PC's. And If you are planning to try and join the group, you've got one guy that doesn't like you very much, is a gang member, and while it may not be real nice, I'll play my character the way I think he would behave if this is real life and this was going on now.

Now if you wrote your guy up to be a total jerk who doesn't mind pissing off people that work close to him, then you nailed it. ;) I'm not going to start trying to tell people how to play their characters. Thats up to them. But be fair warned, I've played a lot of Paranoia also, and killing off other PC's is no big deal.

To get back to your question, No I didn't mind it at all, other than it didn't strike me as being realistic. I hope that makes sense. But I'm a grown man, you could knock my character down and blow his jewels off with shotgun and it wouldn't really bother me. If I came across as being pissed, it is only because that was what I wanted it to come across as. I even tried to throw in a bit of humor in game, of him being so mad he couldn't get his words out, as a way to show you I wasn't mad only my character. I actually really enjoyed it.

Hope you're having a good time.

That's cool - I think we're both singing from the same song sheet.

My raison d'etre of believability is that he's always been a small person and he learnt from a young age that the best way to deal with bullies is to stand up to them - bullies thrive on weakness, show them strength and they normally go and pick on someone else. So the environment meant nothing - he may well have been shitting a brick but as long as he showed you that he wasn't cowed by you then he had emasculated you in that situation - your threats were worthless. It was fun and to be honest, I had a draft post written expecting you to have sparked my lights out!

Maybe our characters will eventually have a grudging respect for each other but at the moment I just think your nothing more than a little thug and you think I'm a jumped up little shit. It will be fun if Mr Hill/we can engineer a situation where you and I have to work together for the common good - that'd be worth buying tickets for :)

Hello All,

Guys I know real life interferes and or you may not feel you have anything to contribute at the moment, but I'm finding it difficult to move things along at any reasonable pace because I'm unsure who I should be waiting on so they can contribute.

Can I have a show of hands as to who is active, who is no longer interested and or who is interested but would like me to NPC their characters.

Naturally, if I don't hear from you in the next 24-48 or so I shall be NPCing your character until further notice.

PS. If you are no longer interested I'd appreciate knowing what has turned you off to the game (My GMing style is a legitimate reason, as in not finding the game interesting and I wont be hurt if this is the case as its the point of playtesting</turns and sobs dramatically into handkerchief>.

I'm still in and enjoying it. I'm not around the computer as much atm and am out and about the farm, so don't post as much as I was.

Also, if it's not relevant for Albert to do/say something I haven't added to the conversation as I don't want to clog up threads with a simple "Albert nods his head agreement" type post - but I'm happy to do so to let you know that I am still engaged with what's going on.

Hey Pappa, as I said to BenTheRat I'm finding running one of these games is a bit more difficult that the typical table top game, in as much as I can't go around the table going what are you doing? So I'm not worried about "agreement posts" as at least it indicates you have nothing to add.

Royya with regards clues I've been adding your research info into the OOC: The News thread. But If there is anything people want to add, or want me to add please feel free to ask. I can't promise not to add Red Herrings though :)

Imp has previously said he's busy with work, so I'll assume the same applies at the moment and NPC him until I hear otherwise.

In other news a surprise new player coming soon.

An idea...

There's a garage... a double one - if there's a car inside we could

b) put a rag down the tank and set fire to it

I'd suggest you either suggest it in game or just do it. Nice ideas both of them.

@ Royya, to get the dice rolls in the boxes, I use the ooc button above. Then put the dice roll in it, so it looks like:

Code: Select all

[ooc]I put text here with target: [dice]1d100[/dice][/ooc]
Here is the same thing without the code tags:
OOC:   I put text here with target: [dice]0[/dice]
This is my preferred method but carnage_lee did a real nice tutorial in my game here using the [dice] and [dice=] options.
.
Thanks on the

Code: Select all

I've gone off the idea... there's no internal access to the garage :(

And using the 'code' tag stops whatever is within the tags being parsed :

Code: Select all

[ooc]I put text here with target: [dice]1d100[/dice][/ooc]

Guys,

Can I please reiterate while we're in combat can I have your investigators intentions, the emphasis on the INTENT, because there are other people present who really, really don't want you doing the things you want to do.

I appreciate this is tricky on the internet because I always know I'd try to write it with the intent of getting as many things in as possible _if_ possible because of turnaround time.

So please phrase things along the lines of:

"X intend to do this, (here's the roll), if I get the chance, and if it succeeds, (which it looks like it does),. this is what I want to try next etc etc.

This way I can compile a full post for what happens in a given 'turn'

Sounds good. I'm a bit confused on what is going on and maybe that is intentional with fog of war and all that. But it would be helpful to give a bit more description on what we are seeing. I think maybe its because we were jumping threads there for a bit and maybe somethings got posted that we didn't see, and so you assume we did. I don't know, I just have no idea what Clay is looking at right now other than one of the guys she shot, rolled over and started shooting, and I got a dodge.

Well in part this is true, I try not to give an entirely complete view of what has happened unless its within the PC's POV. I'm also trying not to constrain what people are doing but its becoming awfully hard to keep things in order as people race themselves through matters, hence the intentions post.

I can equivocally say you will not get a sketch - see my post above. If its not in your PC's POV you don't know about it.

You are leaving the kitchen, Andy and Greg were there with you, Albert is upstairs somewhere, Clay has disappeared out the back of the house and so has Liz.

Sorry about the slow response time my end but what with work and post Christmas family visits I'm simply not getting the screen time. Unfortunately, I'm away now until the 6th.

Can I please, please reiterate I want intentions first not actions. It slows things down a bit, but it does mean I don't have to retrofit your actions to fit the changing situation.

Going to the police/Hospital

Posted: Thu Mar 06, 2014 12:30 pm
by ghill
Hi Guys,

This one is for everyone:

Only Law abiding citizens get to go to the police ;)

At the moment there is a very serious risk of arrest for anyone going to the police/hospital. There has been a major gun battle back at the house where at least 3 people have been killed and the same number seriously injured - this is massively news worthy in the UK were such things rarely happen.

Some of you are really seriously injured getting on an international flight would be a seriously bad idea on medical grounds.

Some of you might get away with going to the police or a hospital - Andrew and Albert are reasonably risk free (Albert never used a gun) While Andrew has a legitimate and supported alibi for being at the house.

However, the rest of you will be questioned individually, you'll need an alibi for why you were there either singly or as a group. That alibi will need to hang together under questioning. You will be arrested (not the same as being charged, but allows the police to hold you) forensic tests will be conducted, you'll be asked about the guns. Even if you were to plead self defence, you'd have to explain where and with what weapons - which would be a seriously bad idea - remember it was Clay (the criminal) who acquired them for you, your finger prints are all over them.

What forensic evidence did you leave at the "Shepard's House"?

Don't forget Albert's car was last seen outside the house.

This is really not a problem you can brush under the carpet. :)

OK on the plus side: Clay will know of places or can find out about places where you can go and stay no questions asked while you recuperate lie low.

I'm told that they have wi-fi in the hospital but I probably won't be able to post again until Sunday - but that will be dependant on the type of post-operative pain-care I'm on. I'm sure any posting I make whilst doped up on morphine will be interesting if not actually relevant to the storyline.

Where are the clues about the law firm ? I want to study them a little bit before I post my interactions with them

Hi royya, what clues about the law firm? The only information you have about the law firm and the charity are from Jacob's personal recollections and from reading the charities entry on the Charity Commssion's web site. All this info is in the current thread. There isn't really any other information about them. If there is some specific info you are after, you'll need to conduct that part of the investigation yourself. If you are unsure what information you're after then perhaps Lee can give you some guidance.

OOC:   Remember, you have a man (Albert) who seems perfectly capable of creating very authentic looking credentials. You have a credit card which while not limitless potentially gives you a reasonable amount of cash to play with you are not without resources here.

Here's my tuppence ha'penny

We leaned that the charity were 'rumoured' to be the sponsors behind Gossham's work; but Gossham was in touch with someone we have not identified - who he seemed to be thanking for their help (ie they were the backer). This person wasn't named and we only have an anonymous email address for this person (MB - on the spreadsheet) - one of our tasks is to identify that person - as they knew who had copies of Gossham's work - and those people have (mostly) now been murdered.

Maybe this person works for the charity or has links with them? One puzzle is... why would the charity the person/or whoever fund Gossham only have him and the others killed
? If that's what happened.

If it were me, I would try and get photo's of everyone coming and going into their offices, identify who works there - who visits. Combine that with the fact that we're also going to email the person that Gossham was in touch with - if we co-ordinate then you guys might see some action your end - that would be important.

One thing not to do... is to go in there and ask questions - keep everything under the radar, for now.

As always YMMV

We need to get into the 'conspiracy' mind-set - so be careful and have a plan!

Wow, never seen so many failures on a spot hidden roll. Did anyone actually make a successful roll when searching? I feel like we are leaving something behind, but our characters are probably feeling like we have searched it top to bottom.

Surely that rather depends on what you were expecting to find and what you were looking for?

I succeeded searching both the lounge and the bedroom (got a 48 out of 61 both times), and someone succeeded when searching the kitchen, I think. But I did notice all those failures early on before I started searching.

This is one of those times where I really wish we were all playing around a table, so I thought I'd look over the last thread to see how it actually panned out. Here is as far as I can determine what happened. Some fails, but a lot of 'find nothings' from people were searching for specific items.

There were some spot hidden rolls you failed which you probably didn't want to make.

Andy searched the kitchen for anything interesting - Fail.
Clay enters looking for artefacts and anything which looks like the Ur language - he finds nothing.
Liz and Jacob systematically search the bedroom - find the camera and the 'holiday snaps'
Greg finds evidence Maria may have tried to kill herself in the bathroom.
Jacob - searches the bathroom - he finds nothing
Andy searches the kitchen for anything interesting - Failed
Clay searches for and finds the laptop after an age. - Fail (success was automatic, the roll simply determined how efficiently he searched for the laptop)
Clay and Liz find Photos under laptop.
Jacob is completely distracted by things and leaves to question neighbours. - Fumble.
Andy's attention is elsewhere and notices nothing. - Fail.
Clay's attention is elsewhere and notices nothing. - Fail.
Albert searches the kitchen and discovers the invoice.
Albert searches the bedroom and find nothing.
Albert searches the lounge and finds nothing
Liz searches the bedroom for the SD card and finds nothing
Liz Looks for details on the photos - identifies the details on the sign.

Shouldn't Alex have 13 HP rather than 12? HP is equal to the average of CON and SIZ, rounded up. The character sheet also lists a Damage Bonus of +0, but he qualifies for +1D4, and the melee attacks do take that into account. Kick should be 1D6+1D4.

Hi Guys

Just wanted to take a moment to talk about the game. So this is the second time around I've played this game, the first time was with a bunch of close friends with whom I had played for many years (umm perhaps decades would be a better unit of measurement) we played weekly/fortnightly (with some gaps for holidays, and one weekend mega session etc) and the game was completed in six months. This game is fast approaching its 6th birthday (Tue Aug 09, 2011)

So two things occur to me certain clues are very old and I doubt anyone has been keeping notes, second my style of Keeping hasn't really changed at all for the medium we're playing in (My Bad and I apologise for this) which I think has overly drawn things out unnecessarily, this has I think lead to certain clues being missed and the importance of others not being understood or thought about.

So what I'd like to ascertain is what you think has happened. Not asking you to delve back through the forums, this is me asking you what you remember, what question you think you are trying to answer and what it might mean.

Any input would be beneficial but please have a think about what you can actually remember (even if you remember incorrectly)

I don't remember too well. I had thought that Gosshamm trespassing on their sacred ground would be reason enough for the Verbetoi to want to kill him (they sure tried to kill us for the same reason), but they might have had other reasons to track him down and kill him. Perhaps he had figured out something about their origins and was getting ready to publish his findings, but that doesn't explain how they got wind of it.

Re: OOC: General Discussion.

Posted: Tue Jul 18, 2017 12:32 pm
by carnage_lee
OK...

The Verbetoi were after Gossham because he stole artefacts from them (the book and sceptre) and also had started a thesis on their (the Verbetoi's) origins and their use of the 'Proto' language.

Gossham sent a draft of his thesis to someone that we didn't track down (they appeared to be a businessman with ties to the area (Albania); Gossham then went to Albania (met with Maria) and visited the same caves that we were just at (this is where he looted the items) - this trip was to gather evidence that would be conclusive - or to confirm the 'proof' that Gossham had. So this proof is/was in the caves that we were just in.

On his return to the UK Gossham takes a week(ish) to complete his thesis and sends it to Maria - she 'goes missing' after receipt and we find her body in the verbetoi caverns. Perhaps she was looking to confirm the latest thesis?

A day after Gossham sends the thesis he is murdered.

The whole thing seems to have been started a year and a half before the current events after Brichester Uni's dig on Malta - 'Maltese Fragments' seems to be the kicker to get Gossham all excited.

We found the items that Gossham looted in his 'lockup' and ended up leaving them with Prof Westerlund to examine - the sceptre seems to be able to make a fire/flame or cause other objects to burst into flame (as reported by Westerlund) - there were ceramics which have writing on that can cause people to go 'la-la' and re-write parts of the language centre of their brain. (not sure what happened with the ceramic pieces).

Evidence of similar writing in Albania

Re: OOC: General Discussion.

Posted: Tue Jul 18, 2017 12:42 pm
by carnage_lee
  • Someone is/was funding Gossham's research.
  • Someone got the Brichester dig closed down.
  • The Verbetoi started out on Malta and moved to Albania - they were not well liked (feared) and seem to have had powerful magical aid.
  • It's unlikely that the person(s) funding Gossham are the Verbetoi or anyone with close links/friendly with them - BUT they must have tipped off the Verbtoi about Gossham ?? Or they 'just tracked him down' ?? IF so then they can track us down ??
  • The items that Gossham looted must hold valuable clues.
  • The Verbetoi REALLY don't what their history exposed.. even if it is ground-breaking and totally revolutionary and could re-write history.

Re: OOC: General Discussion.

Posted: Tue Jul 18, 2017 12:55 pm
by carnage_lee
What I think (not Aandy) is going on...
  • The ancestors of the Verbetoi were in league with a BIG BAD. As a lot of their power seems to be fire based .... Cthuga? How does that fit in with the Proto-Language?
  • This all started on Malta ... why did they leave there?
  • There's a 3rd party trying to 'out' the Verbetoi.. why? Does that person want their power??
  • OK.. here's my mad theory... The Verbetoi used their worship of Cthuga to imprison another Big BAD on Malta (Nyaly??) And then abandoned Malta ... the proto-language would be a 'gift' from Nyalathoptep or it's Avatar.
  • The dig on Malta inadvertently freed (or the means to free were discovered) the entity or agents of the entity is Gossham's benefactor.
  • The benefactor needs certain objects to be fully free of whatever is holding them in Malta.
Failed SAN roll ... *wibble wibble*

Well, I got the gist of it, but PBF games can lose so much because of players coming and going and only as much detail is discovered based on how well the players read the descriptions. Subtle things will often get lost. Even obvious ones are gone after a few months.

I had a good time playing, but it feels like we are done, but you are wanting something else, I'm just not sure what?

With my KS book doing so well, I have been just swamped and unable to spend as much time on here as I would like.

Thanks for running it.

Hi, Guy's.

Just wanted to say this thread should in no way be viewed as a criticism of anyone's ability to regularly post. That last chapter...actually all the chapters have lasted a lot longer than I ever envisaged, and my Keeper style has not adapted accordingly.

Certain clues in this scenario are not clear cut they require clues to effectively be bolted together or in some cases inferences need to be made, one of the things we used to do during the Table top game was have a recap of the previous session and discuss/chew over what was being done, what had been discovered and what it might mean. That's a bit difficult in PBF as the last session (chapter?) might have been several months ago and PBF doesn't seem to be really conducive to that sort of chewing over the details :)

Looking at Carnage_Lee's posts I can tell that some clues have been lost due to game time (for example you definitely found out who was funding Gossham) but even I'm not 100% sure now about what this group should and should not know.

It seems a bit of a cop out for me to just tell you whats going on, but as a player, if a games going to hold my interest I need to know whats going on (So kudos to all of you for sticking with me)

So things are not over yet but I'm just not sure how to proceed, I don't want to just feed you the plot that seems dismissive of all of the efforts you have all put in, but what if I went through the chapters and summarised what you have actually discovered?

I'm open to ideas/suggestions.

Oh, that's right, that charity (Kush nderton) funded Gosshamm. I'd forgotten that too.

I guess listing the clues we found and letting us decide what to do with them is best. From this point forward, it may be helpful to create a thread where clues can be added as they're found so that we have them all in one convenient place that we can easily review.

I'd forgotten about the charity too; I think we do need to go back and re-read what happened to refresh our memories about what has happened.
I did create a clues thread - with spreadsheet but after creating it I didn't update it any... we could use that as the starting point to 'get back on track'?

Thanks! I actually read the whole thing.

I think we should send a copy of the final thesis and a USB stick with a copy of the murals to Westerlund while we mail the other one to ourselves, along with a note explaining it and suggesting that the artifacts he's holding may be the key to unlocking the translation. I had been thinking the book might be it, but Westerlund had said that the "poem" used to activate the sceptre was akin to the Rosetta Stone, so maybe he should start there once he's caught up on the thesis. This will give him a headstart, and we can meet him when we return to the UK.

Sorry got being the laggard.

I'm still processing...

IMHO These are the things we need to urgently follow up on.
  • Maria was 'translating' some images - most likely from the memory card in the DHL package - Assuming that was the memory card that was on Maria's body, we need to go through that ASAP - compare it to the photo's we took - work out what she was translating.
  • Research the UR Language
  • Miaria's research notes - (additional notes) Then using the marker function additional notes: it’s not prayer, it's fear, they fear him, fear what he’s going to let through.

There are rugged rocks to the left and right and some indication of the sea to the rear of the young man It looks as though there is some kind of tomb behind the man’s right shoulder, is this symbolic?
Identify that image ... is it of Malta (site 3)?
  • The 'spell' On the piece of paper is written: ph'nglui mglw'nafh Verbti Fomalhaut n'gha-ghaa naf'lthagn - research occult referenced to Fomalhaut(?)
  • Research Ulpius Crinitus and Centurion Flavius - is the decimation of the Verbetoi by the Romans on record?
  • Gossham thought proof of his thesis was in aretefacts on Malta - however the gold artefacts we have would offer proof (if the ages can be ratified).
  • Ask Kush nderten why they bankrolled Gossham - what did they want to achieve/prove?
  • How/Why did Gossham make the jump that the 'writing people' encountered artefacts of a civilisation that pre-dated them? Book of Eibon? mythical Book of Skelos - the city of Yb & Shem - what can we find out? The Atahath = present day Verbetoi (as use Afro-Asiatic (origin) language).
  • Photo no 32: The mural depicts a young man surrounded by intense light or fire from above. Wounds are seen along the back of his arms and legs his back and torso is heavily tattooed. He is surrounded by other people they are either bowed in prayer

Ties up to the following passage?

Transcription, He hangs motionless in black, forbidding sky in the deeps oh gleaming orb which floats before this dreamers vision. Fearsome dark are the marks upon thy dull/dread/fearsome face/surface marked by columns of spinning flame arced uponn thine rim.... [indecipherable] the titan sunspots drift slowly across thine face, you roar your insatiable anger against the chains of the Ancient/Elder/Old Gods which had bound you there for an eternity.... Oh great Verbti we shall free you.

Verbti is the god ... who/what is it really?

Hi, guys some domestic issues at the moment mean I'm going to be posting intermittently for the next week or so. Please detail the plan between you and I'll try and update as frequently as I can.

It looks like there are two likely lines investigate the various property companies, investigate Alex Rudaj?

Sorry I've been super swamped. I had 11 puppies and the last 2-3 weeks it has been hell at my house. We gave the last one away today. I should be good to go now.

OK, so just waiting for Lee who I think is still stateside if his twitter account is to be believed. Unless anyone has a critical reason not to I think I'm going to fast forward slightly to Malta.

What pups did you have BenTR?

I had a great pyraneese follow me home. She was so sweet and trained. So we brought her in and took her to the vet hoping she was chipped, she wasn't. No one claimed her and we took her in.

She was pregnant. 11 puppies later, things were hell. Hundreds of dollars later they are now gone and we are reclaiming our house.

OK, guys as long as its OK with you I'm going to move the whole story along a couple of weeks and set with a lot of the minor stuff done.

Assuming you are all OK with that?

I'll start a new thread and post a link to it here and in the other thread. But I'm going to be a couple of days before that happens. Please feel free to detail anything you'd want to do in the intervening time and it would be nice to know when you want to arrive in relation to all of Radaj's crew, same time, a week, two weeks earlier etc.

I'm ready. We should arrive on Malta at least some time before the last of Rudaj's crew does, to give us time for reconnaissance. Since we know their flight details, we can even try to follow them from the airport and see where they go and who they meet.

Good idea - would be nice to know where they are staying, if they're all together.

Nobody has posted here in 4 months, are we ready to call this game done and stick a fork in it?

The Keeper last logged in on June 6th. I'm hoping he returns, but he hasn't yet.

Hi Guys, I'm not dead just separating and divorcing which is horrific enough without adding non-euclidian horrors to it. To be honest, while I'd love to say I'll be back to this shortly it'll likely be a while before I feel up to it again.

Which is a shame as we were due to the finale in the next scene. Mr H feel free to put this thread to sleep, if you're all free at a later date I'd love to bring it to an end.

Sorry Giles

Man that sucks, I know I've been through it. This is just a game, get your life in order first.

I'm up whenever to come back and finish this in a few months. Take care.

Ben

I'm sorry things are so rough, and I hope you can get through them. When you're ready to continue, so am I. I think I should leave the game here for at least a little while so that everyone has a chance to see it. I'll wait until the weekend to move the game to the Graveyard, and when you're ready, I can move it back.

Thanks Giles, I think everyone fully understands.
I'll be happy to be able to continue at a later date.

Will you be at Dragonmeet again? If so, it'd be awesome meet up again - though this time perhaps not sink quite so many pints at the bar - I was quite hammered by 5pm.

I plan both to be at Dragon Meet and not be nailed to the bar.

Last time I was well and truly shedded and wound up buying a lot of stuff which while great stuff, I really didn't need, nor could really afford.
