Andy Wade

Andy manages to climb down the 2nd rope without any difficulty and joins the others on the crowded ledge. "There's a room behind that vent up there, all right.." he points back up the way they came. Old... real old... floor worn away with a couple of passages leading 'god-knows where'. I couldn't see anything but I got this creepy feeling." his shrug is lost in the darkness. "So, what have you got here?" he looks at the pages and then down to where Jacob points. "Oh.. shit! That aint good. he looks up at the glowing vent above their heads and then to the rope which they had all descended. "So, Maria fell from the rope? She was an experienced climber, why would she have unclipped herself? So you think she was trying to climb over... to the vent? " he asks.

OOC:   She can't have fallen from the vent, unless she kicked off about 15' more likely she fell off the 2nd belay somehow. Considering how twisted some of you have become in the dark it might be she foolishly un-clipped herself from her safety.

OOC:   You have one more rope, the rope Alex has been holding as your safety.

OOC,Doesn't the climbing gear we brought have enough ropes to set up another belay here?

OOC:   Yes - This is the line Alex has been using for your safety line (you wouldn't normally have this second line) while you have abseiled down using Maria's climbing gear.hence only fumbles being an issue. Naturally, you can use this for a third pitch.(descent) without a safety

Andy Wade

Andy takes a torch and carefully steps over to where it looks like Maria hit the ledge that they are now all standing on; he shines the torch downwards, moving slowly from side to side trying to see if there is any sign of Maria within the beam of the torch.

"I wonder how far have we climbed down? he asks aloud.

Shining the light into the darkness Andy can't see any sign of a body, but he think he can just about make out what might be the cave's floor or features rising up from it (basically some bits of darkness aren't as dark as others bits). A stone dropped from the edge takes just over five seconds to hit the bottom.
OOC:   Each pitch so far has been around 50-55m, your typical climbing rope is 60m long.

Andy counts till he hears the stone hit the bottom... "one one thousand, two one thousand, three one thous .. " he stops when he heard the rattling of the stone rebounding off the cave floor. "right.. stuff falls at almost ten metres per second, per second ... so that's... 60 metres ish?"

"Five and a bit seconds, so ... that means it's about 120 metres to the floor .. we don't have enough rope to go that far do we Alex?

OOC:   Doh my fault. Thought I was calculation in feet not meters ...so it takes nearly 4 seconds, so somewhere between 45 and 70 meters give or take

OOC:   Now we both know you're lieing because if you had done REAL maths, your answer would have been in feet and inches, not these newfangled meters .

"She had to have been in that vent at one point to light the lantern," says Liz. "Could she have fallen trying to get back to the ledge? If she fell that far it's unlikely she survived, but maybe there's still a chance. We'll have to tie the end of the rope around our waists as we descend, and someone on the ledge will have to feed it out slowly. She must have had more rope on her, so maybe whoever gets down first can tie it to the end of this rope and tug on it so we know to pull it back up. Then we can use that as a safety line."

"Well, someone lit the lamps but it wasn't Maria, the lamp I smashed was a real antique like something from 'Spartacus'. I don't think it could burn for longer than a day and Maria has what.. four, five days head-start on us?" He shrugs, an action mostly missed in the gloom. "Doc.. that blood isn't 'fresh' is it?" he asks Greg. Andy is pretty sure that whatever happened to Maria happened some time ago, and her chances of still being alive are vanishingly small.

Greg looks up, "Well someone or something lit those lanterns. We really should check out this vent before going down." He then looks down, "anyone have one of those glow sticks on them?"
ooc,do we have any of the glow sticks? If so, I'll break one and shake it and drop it down right where the blood spat was on the edge.

"Yeah, we should check out the vent before we go down," agrees Liz. "We won't want to have to come all the way back up from the bottom to look at it later. Besides, there might be a safer way to the bottom through the vent."

"So then Alex, what's the safest way to get up there?" he points to the vent above them.
