Donald followed the lot of them, pulling out a wrench from his back pocket on the way. "This is bull shit," he commented.

The other people hiding behind the bus came out once everyone went inside. "Well, now what?" asked Becky Clarke.

Rachel makes a despairing gesture towards Donald's back as he exits.

"There goes our best mechanic!

"Becky, what do you think: shall I try to find some others who can lend a hand with the bus?"

[Mr. Handy]

In the parking lot-
"No, Rachel," said Becky, "you stay here and keep working on the bus with Jack. Losing Donald will slow us down a good deal, but losing both of you would be even worse. I'll see if I can round up anyone else to help out." She followed Donald, who let himself into the back door with his key and entered the school.

In the parking lot-
"The engine's the problem," said Jack Brunner. "Help me poke around in it some more, maybe we'll get to the bottom of why this old clunker stopped running. I think between the two of us we can finish in a couple of hours, but it'd be a lot faster if we still Donald here."

Rachel unslings her Uzi and rolls up her sleeves.

"Okay, I'm ready to get my hands dirty."

[Mr. Handy]

In the parking lot-
"That's an impressive piece of hardware," Jack said, noticing Rachel's Uzi while they worked. "How'd you come by it?"

[Mr. Handy]

In the parking lot-
When Rachel didn't answer, Jack shrugged and continued working.

Rachel-

"I wasn't being rude, Jack, just a little preoccupied--there's been an awful lot happening recently! The Uzi? I'm head of security for CDC, we 'look after' the scientists, so I need serious hardware.

"Um, so your family are in that trailer--the one I checked out?"

[Mr. Handy]

In the parking lot-
"What's left of them," said Jack, lowering his head. "They turned...I had to...I'd really rather not talk about that."

Rachel places a hand on Jack's shoulder.

"I know. I'm sorry.

"You are fortunate to get away."

[Mr. Handy]

In the parking lot-
"Fortunate?!" said Jack, shaking his head. "My whole family's dead, and I have to live with it. I don't feel very fortunate. I think maybe they were the lucky ones."

"Don't say that! My parents were devout Hebrews, but I'm not religious--at all. What I do believe, however, is that your family live on in your memories--the happy ones. That is why you've got to carry on, Jack, to keep the memories alive.

"And there are others who need you now."

[Mr. Handy]

In the parking lot-
"Yeah, you've got a point," said Jack, busying himself with his work.

"What about your family?" asked Jack as he worked. "Have you had any news about them?"

"No. But they live in Israel--my sister and her daughter.

"I hope that in some parts of the world the infection is not too bad....

Rachel wipes a greasy thumb over her cheek. "My security job--money-- what's the point? I wish I could just get away from it all--maybe go home."

In the parking lot-
"Israel..." said Jack. "Wow, that's far away. I don't know how you'll get there, but I hope you can go back and be with your family one day. I'd like to see it myself. What the hell, I don't have anything left here any more."
