Claire taps the comm unit attached to her suit. "Lt. Colonel Carmicheal, this is Captain Kelleher in the isolation unit. We are about to take in the casualties soon. Sir - We can hear heavy arms fire from our position. Can you confirm? Over."

In the intake area-
"Yes, ma'am," said Catherine Rourke to Lt. Sara Evans. "I think I should stand watch for trouble while you and the rest of the medical staff examine the civilians."

"Captain, that was a howitzer firing a starshell to illuminate the area behind the base so our troops can see the infected," replied Carmichael. "Nothing to worry about." Just then there was a distant explosion with a strange echo - it was audible over the radio as well as from the intake area. "What the hell was that?!"

Lt Gomez looks to the others,

"Indeed, we should have some to keep an eye out for those infected who might get here."

His body seems to be filled with a nervous energy as he fidgets and moves waiting for the newcomers.

OOC,Major Jesse Stone and Sergeant Major Raymond Crew have set up their command post on the roof, which I think was mentioned at the start of the chapter. They have four snipers up there with them.

Claire uses her radio again, "Colonel, is everything alright? Your last transmission was broken.". Awaiting a reply she turns to Airman Rourke, "See if the ops centre upstairs under Major Stone can get some eyes on the situation......just while we are waiting" and follows with a wink to ease tension.

In the intake area-
"Thank you, sir," Captain Kelleher heard Captain Johansen say on the same frequency.

"The helicopter that had been sent to pick up the civilians crashed outside the gates and exploded," replied Carmichael. "The gates were destroyed in the blast and a squad of SFs was wiped out except for their sergeant. The civilians are being brought inside and we're sending a rapid response team to hold the position. We're fine here, just busy as hell. How are things over at your location, Captains?"

"Major Stone," said Catherine on the clinic's frequency, "this is Airman Rourke. Captain Kelleher wants to know what's going on, sir."

"Airman, a starshell was fired to light up the area around the rear gates so the infected could be spotted and terminated," said Major Stone. "The helicopter sent to pick up the civilians crashed just outside the gates. That explosion you heard was it going off. The gates were trashed and some SFs on the inside were killed."

Catherine reported what the major had told her to Captain Kelleher.

Airman Simpson returned, laying out two hoses behind him.

Lt Gomez looks over all the prepare equipment, All sterile and clean, knowing what was to come. He turns back to the commander,

"Ma'am does that mean the teams are going to .... Come back to ..." He leaves his question off trailing as shivers of revulsions flow through him.

In the intake area-
"Everything is fine," said Captain Johansen over the radio, "we're preparing for the influx of wounded. Any ideas on numbers?

"We still don't know if anyone even survived the crash," said Lt. Colonel Carmichael, "but it only had a crew of two. There may also be injuries among the civilians. I've deployed a rapid response team to the gates, and they should arrive there shortly. Once they do, the Strykers that are transporting them there will then bring the civilians and any survivors of the crash to the clinic."

Lt Gomez starts to pace now, It was always the wait! the thought ran through his head over and over again, the wait! That was worse then anything else he had faced in his life. Waiting for the dead, the wounded. Now this!

He looks to the Captain and the others in the room, then checks his suit again.

In the intake area-
Gary Simpson finished laying out the hoses, depositing one in the men's side of the room and one in the women's side.

Airman Marcus Winters busily worked with the others to prepare the men's section of the intake room. The civilians, and possibly personnel injured in the helicopter crash would be here soon and he intended to be ready to help them. Simpson brought in the hose, and Winters double checked to make sure it wasn't laid out in a way that could trip someone or otherwise interfere with operations, and otherwise proceeded about any tasks as necessary.
