Z-Day - 6:10 PM Central Time - Brooks High School, Omaha, Nebraska
In the kitchen-
Amelia Delacroix had been preparing the main course, featuring spicy fried chicken and other Cajun delicacies. She had done a better job than she had on the appetizers, as evidenced by the delight she had heard from the diners in the cafeteria. She was making sure there would be enough for anyone who wanted seconds, as all of the perishable food had to go. Better to eat it than to waste it. Once that was done, she would have to get dessert ready. She had managed to keep the ice cream chilled, but the freezer wouldn't stay cold for much longer. The power had gone out nearly an hour and a half ago. Soon everything that they didn't eat would melt.

In the cafeteria-
The gathered students, faculty, staff, and guests all ate their chicken, which was excellent, as those who were familiar with Amelia's cooking had known it would be. Tariq al-Tikriti carried a tray with a few plates of food to bring to Megan and Kyle in the security office and Dr. Helene Saunders on the roof, as well as some for himself. He headed out into the hallway.

The scientists sat at the table nearest to the kitchen. Dr. Brigetta Hausmann and her assistant Stephanie Bridges had flown in from Cheyenne. After surviving terrible events on their dangerous journey, they had managed to arrive in Omaha just in time with the data they needed to save the city and perhaps the entire world. Seated with them were Dr. Edward Singh and Dr. Liz Somerville, two CDC scientists who had been at the school for a while now, along with their technician Adam Donnelly and their security chief Rachel Cohen. Missing was Dr. Helene Saunders, who was keeping watch on the roof. The EMP device there would ensure Omaha's continued safety, at least from the dead. The living were presenting problems all their own.

Chuck Lubachek had been locked up in the security office for a murder committed on school grounds a couple of nights ago, Kyle Rogers was there after being disarmed when he was caught with guns and bombs in his locker. Doug Marley was there for trying to kill Chuck, who had been arrested for killing his uncle. Less than an hour ago a gang of juvenile criminals led by Darnell Jones had gone after the prisoners. Doug had joined them, and they had murdered Chuck and nearly done the same to Kyle. Jerry Law had been powerless to stop them. When the police finally broke through the barricaded door, they knocked out Trooper Erica Spears of the Nebraska State Police and took her hostage, escaping in one of the few cars that still worked despite the EMP device.

The faculty and staff sat at the second table. Prinicpal Lawrence Adler was at its head, and on either side of him were Vice Principal Sharon Kaplan and his secretary, Laura Shelley. Also seated with them were school nurse Michelle Marquez, Jerry Law, Becky Clarke, Donald Woodridge, Chester Johnson, Julianne Landers, Declan McLeod, and Enrico Santini.

The students sat at the third table - or at least the ones who weren't locked up or running around loose doing God knows what or the ones who had gone after them. They included Japanese exchange student Michiko Watanabe, Teresa Vazquez, Elijah Smith, Diana Forester, Kelly Cameron, Ali al-Tikriti, and Sunny Kwon.

Everyone else was at the long table closest to the hallway door. There were Dr. Bernard Smith and Lucy Armstrong, who had flown in with Dr. Hausmann on Erica's helicopter. Also with them were Lori Desmond, homeless veteran Alvin Drummond and his four-legged friend Murray, Chinese journalism student John Lee, Tariq's wife Erin Halloran, and his friends Rashad Sadiq and Samir Hossein.

Rachel Cohen says to no one in particular.
"Quite a gathering to dinner."

Alvin looked up as he ate dinner secretly feeding pieces of chicken to Murry. "The CO must want us to be fed well as we need to go out on patrol tonight," he said loudly.

-I'm full says Michiko after some time.- Aliens or no aliens, I won't get a husband if I get fat- she says joking.

Donald picked at his chicken. He had thought he was hungry, but finally sitting down allowed him the opportunity to run through what had transpired over the past day. He could scarcely believe it. "So where do we go from here? Sit tight until the world fixes itself, or go about fixing other places one at a time?"

Rashad forked more chicken into his mouth.

-We need to knew how the city survive. I have the bad feeling that zombies must have created a carnage, so propbably we should try to reunite the survivers. - says Jerry

Alvin said, "Zombies? Who cares about Zombies. What about Charlie and the VC?"

Donald laughed... unexplicably. He wiped a tear from his eye and looked at the others saying apologetically, "I'm sorry. It's not funny. But I find it a bit peculiar when someone at the table is asking about 'Charlie' and the 'Viet Cong'. I thought we were done with that conflict."

Alvin said, "Done? What unit you with private? I have half a mind to report you to your CO!"

Handy,Am I playing Alvin correctly? I know he went insane a while back so he does think he is in Vietnam again right?

In the east hall, ground floor-
Tariq carried the tray of food into the lobby.

In the kitchen-
Amelia kept preparing more food, humming as she worked.

In the cafeteria-
Nobody paid it any heed when Alvin fed Murray. In fact, he had been given an extra-large portion, so perhaps they had intended that he do so.

"That's a good question," said Stephanie to Donald. "There's no reason we can't do both. We need to get Omaha back on its feet, but we also have to make sure that the rest of us can benefit from what we've learned here. If we could let Warren Air Force Base know that it worked, they could blanket the whole country with an EMP. One high-altitude detonation would do it. The loss of electronics would be very painful, but I think having the dead roaming around eating everyone is more painful. Convincing them to do it wouldn't be easy. The first part of the problem would be getting the information through to them. Communication isn't easy, so it would require someone going there in person."

"Don't even think about it, Stephanie," said Dr. Hausmann. "I know you want to help, but you've already done plenty. We barely survived the trip here. Going back would be very dangerous."

"We'd need a vehicle before we can even think of it," said Becky Clarke. "There is that old school bus out back, but it's broken down."

"If it's old enough, that might work," said Stephanie. "Any vehicle made in the last thirty years or so would have an electronic ignition that would be ruined by the pulse, but if it's older it should still run."

"This bus dates back to the seventies. That's why it broke down. Early this morning the National Guard commandeered all of our school buses for evacuations - all the ones that worked. The one we have left wasn't going anywhere."

"Let's consider what we can do for Omaha, too," said Principal Adler. "Gathering survivors is a good idea, Jerry, and this school makes a good gathering place."

Donald eyed Alvin with some compassion when he realized the man had taken a dive off the deep end. "Civilian... no unit. I work for the boss-man here," he said jutting a thumb over to the principal.

He listened as the conversation continued, then between bites offered, "I might be able to do something about that broken bus. After I'm done, I'll head out and take a look-see." He looked to the others and suggested, "Might consider sending a team down to the metal shop class to find stuff that we might be able to use. Old car parts, and lots of sheet metal to reinforce the bus. We could make a mobile tank out of the thing."

Alvin perked up, "Tank? I used to be a tank man before the grunts grabbed me. I will be glad to show you my expert skills civilian."

Rashad eyes Alvin sideways. He shrugs and takes another bite of his soup. Uh, I'm sorry I don't know your name. Principal... ? Um, regardless, the national guard was here this morning? Are they still in the area or did they move somewhere else?

Donald peered at Alvin and shrugged, "Sure ... the more the merrier."

Amelia stayed busy working.

In the cafeteria-
"Yeah, we've got that stuff in the workshop," said Declan. "I can help with that after dinner."

"Maybe we should concentrate on getting the bus running first," said Becky. "Then if we have time we can put armor on it."

"The National Guard was here," said Principal Adler, "but it was before I even got in. I'm Principal Larry Adler, by the way."

"They came around 7:00 AM," added Becky. "Took all the buses and just left. Well, except the broken one, 'cause that one wasn't going anywhere. Haven't seen hide nor hair of them since."

"We should also build a second EMP generator," said Stephanie. "Not only is it good to have a backup, but we could mount it on the bus once we get it working and take it with us. That'll be good protection against the zombies wherever we go. They'll never get close to it without keeling over."

"Yeah," said Adam. "You and I can work on that after dinner."

"And Dr. Saunders could help too. I'm sure Chester Johnson and some of his students can lend a hand as well."

Alvin stood up, saluted Adler, and said, "Private Alvin reporting for duty Sir!"

Finishing the last of his meal, Donald pushed his tray away and looked at those volunteering, smiling and nodding. "Looks like we have a god-damned plan. I'll get to fixing that bus."

He stood and grabbed his tray to dispose of it properly before heading for the doors.

"Yeah, we've got that stuff in the workshop," said Declan. "I can help with that after dinner."

"Maybe we should concentrate on getting the bus running first," said Becky. "Then if we have time we can put armor on it."

Rachel forks the last of the gumbo on her plate and shovels it into her mouth.
"I can't fix a bus, so I'll go to the workshop with Declan."

Rashad smiled. I'm Rashad. Rashad Sadiq. That's unfortunate that the national guard pulled out, but atleast we can hope they got some of the people of Omaha out in time.

Alvin said, "I will go stand guard while you all fix the tank. Lets go gentlemen times awasting. Charlie is on his way." Alvin started walking out the door.

In the kitchen-
Amelia continued cooking.

In the cafeteria-
"Oh, I'm not going to the workshop," said Declan. "Becky's right, let's get the bus moving first before we worry about armor. I can help do that too."

"You sure ate fast," said Principal Adler. "There's more where that came from if you're still hungry, but if you feel you need to start working now, I can't stop you. I understand that you want to get the most use out of what little daylight remains."

"You sure you won't stay with us, Rachel?" asked Liz. "Seems like you're always busy working."

"The National Guard wasn't evacuating anyone from Omaha," said Becky to Rashad. "Otherwise they'd have taken the kids when they took the buses. No, they were just evacuating people from the more dangerous areas of Omaha to less dangerous areas. Don't know if it made any difference. They had already sealed off Omaha itself by that point - to contain the infection, they said." She went out the doorway and into the hall with Donald, Declan, Alvin, Murray, and Rachel.

"Count me in too," said Lucy. "I'm a pretty good mechanic." She picked up her plate of food and followed the others into the hall.

In the east hall, ground floor-
When Donald and the others emerged from the cafeteria, they saw Tariq coming out of the security office and into the lobby. He was still carrying the tray, but there was less food on it now.

ooc,Eating is boring. LOL.

Daniel nodded to Tariq in passing, and turned to make his way toward where the broken bus was. He knew the most important thing right now was to find out what was wrong with it and find a way to repair it. He had worked on the older busses before, but couldn't remember off the top of his head what had happened to the one that rested like the many corpses in the streets after the EMP went off.

Rashad mulls over what he heard and continues to eat his food.

"You sure you won't stay with us, Rachel?" asked Liz.

"I'll come along with the rest of you."

Alvin petted Murry and said, "I'll take point if you all want. What is the password by the way?"

In the kitchen-
Amelia added a little more spice to the food.

In the cafeteria-
"Maybe I should start working on that second EMP device now," said Stephanie.

"Not until you finish your dinner," said Liz. "I insist. You've saved the world once already today. Take a break and enjoy yourself before doing it again, okay?"

"But I feel like I ought to be helping."

"You want to help? How about making a rousing speech?"

"A speech?"

"Sure! Something inspiring and motivational. You'd be good at it, Steph."

"Well, okay." Stephanie stood up and composed her thoughts, then cleared her throat and began. "If I have seen further, it is because I have stood on the shoulders of giants. So said Sir Isaac Newton, who is himself one of the giants of science upon whose shoulders I have stood. I may have finished the important work that has given humanity a chance to survive after this terrible day, but I did not start it. This has been a team effort, and I would like to thank my teammates for the vital work they've done. Without them it wouldn't have been possible. First and foremost is Dr. Brigetta Hausmann, my friend and mentor." She indicated the woman with the broken arm beside her. "She has taught me so much about biology, and working with her this past year has been a true pleasure. Without her early work in decoding the aliens' language, I wouldn't have been able to complete it today. She did almost all of it herself before she had to pass the torch to me. I just ran the last leg of the race for her. She broke her arm while trying to save a man's life. He was beyond salvation, and he was the first of many reanimated corpses that we encountered. She nearly died then and there, but thanks to other heroes she remains alive and unbitten."

Rashad begins to applaud. Thank you, Dr. Bridges and Dr. Hausmann. You two saved myself, Samir and Erin. We were surrounded by these zombies, and if not for your device we'd still be stuck up there.

In the kitchen-
Amelia kept cooking.

In the cafeteria-
"Yes, thank you," said Samir, listening intently.

"You're welcome," said Stephanie. "While the EMP device was my idea, I'm not the one who built it. I mean, I could have, if I had been here and hadn't been busy with the work I was doing. It was Adam Donelly here and Dr. Helene Saunders who found the parts and assembled it. We also need to thank them. Without their efforts, we would not have survived to enjoy our victory. The school was about to be overrun when they activated it. And we need to thank everyone who helped repair the generator after it went down. Without power, we wouldn't have been able to transmit the message into space. Emilio Montoya, the late Chuck Lubachek, Donald Woodridge, and Declan McLeod all contributed from what I've heard, and Emilio did an especially excellent job. Without him, power might not have been restored in time."

In the kitchen-
Amelia took a taste, savoring it and licking her lips.

In the cafeteria-
"There are others who have made our victory possible," continued Stephanie. "People who protected us so that we could reach Omaha, some of whom made the ultimate sacrifice to save humanity. One of them was the courageous Nebraska State Trooper Bo RIchards." Her eyes welled up as she spoke. "He gave his all to protect me and Dr. Hausmann. His expert use of a shotgun eliminated two dangerous zombies that had threatened to kill many of us, and he took a bullet in the back in the process. He survived thanks to his vest, and he flew with us in the helicopter. Unfortunately, when we landed to refuel at an airfield about halfway here, a vicious and maniacal National Guard corporal named Anthony Gardner tried to steal the helicopter and do much worse. He had kidnapped air traffic controller Kathryn McCoy and forced her to lead us into a trap. He also abducted our pilot, fellow State Trooper Erica Spears, and he had very dark plans for both of them. Bo courageously went to their rescue, along with State Police Sergeant Diane Ford and Trooper Rick Brenner. All three were killed by Gardner's grenade. He also murdered our co-pilot Bob Larkin when we tried to take off and escape, and even one of his own people when she attempted to stop him. If not for Erica's bravery, all would have been lost. But she took a chance to flee to the helicopter and got us off the ground. However, Kathryn McCoy wasn't so lucky, and he recaptured her as we escaped. Now Erica has been abducted again, this time by young murderous criminals."

Rashad listens with rapt attention. I can't imagine what that must have been like, I spent most of the day on top of a roof, but that's hardly bad compared to all that you went through.

-Soldiers doing that? I though they would obey orders and protect civilians!

In the cafeteria-
"Thank you," said Stephanie. "Gardner was a psycho. His people followed him at first because they were afraid of him, but eventually they turned on him. He managed to get the better of them, though. He killed one and managed to outsmart the other two and get away. The last I saw when we flew away, they were chasing him. I hope they caught him and saved Kathryn. I hope that Kate Wheeler and the others can save Erica too. Erica has been so brave. Gardner was going to make off with me before she stepped forward and offered herself in my place."

in the cafeteria-
"You're absolutely right," said Stephanie. "I tried to talk Gardner out of what he was doing, but he wouldn't listen to reason. He probably wasn't too reasonable even before this started happening. He was just an evil, evil man who only cared about himself. I can't understand how people can be so selfish and cruel at a time like this, but there's still hope because others have been selfless and kind. Some of them that I mentioned even gave their lives in the hopes of saving humanity, and I have to believe that we're worth saving. When a crisis happens, that's when you really find out what people are like. You can see who will stand together and who will turn on others to save their own skins."

In the cafeteria-
"Of course, the regular military wasn't very helpful," continued Stephanie. "We thought the Air Force would protect us when they came to the truck stop where we had landed this morning, but all they were interested in was the communications equipment there - and our helicopter. They tried to take it for themselves too, and there was no convincing them that we needed it more. They simply wouldn't believe us when we told them that the fate of the world was at stake. There was a standoff at the helicopter and a mutiny at the same time, and we were able to take off in the confusion."

In the cafeteria-
"Yes, that's true," said Stephanie. "Of course, there are groups of evildoers too. There were a bunch of skinheads who blew up the diner at the truck stop with the bomb because their leader had been killed there. Brigetta had tried to save him, but it was too late. Then he got back up and broke her arm. Still, most of the bad guys aren't very organized compared to the rest of us, and they're more likely to turn on each other." She shuddered to think of what a truly together bunch of villains could accomplish in what was left of the world. Large parts of it could easily end up being ruled by tyrants of various sorts. Then again, that had been the case before the zombies.

In the cafeteria-
"After everything that's happened, I can't understand why some people still don't understand the value of human life," said Stephanie. "So many people are dead already, and so few remain. How can anyone want to kill even more people?" She sat back down and resumed eating. Liz put a comforting arm around her.

Rashad quietly contemplates Stephanie's words.

In the cafeteria-
Everyone continued eating dinner in silence.

John Lee sits silently, his hand every now and then touches his side as his eyes glance around the room.

Rashad hears something.

Michiko was entranced with the food and didn't hear a thing.

In the cafeteria-
Dinner continued in silence.

John Lee and Rashad Sadiq,With the absence of sound, [b]John[/b] and [b]Rashad[/b] were able to hear several sets of footsteps entering the security office, on the other side of the cafeteria wall. Another ste of footsteps entered the hall outside the cafeteria and was coming this way.

John lee stands briefly and heads towards the door. His instincts took over as he headed out towards the hallway to see what was happening.

After a moment's hesitation, Rashad follows John.

In the cafeteria-
Tariq walked in from the hall, passing John and Rashad. "A bunch of suits just arrived," he announced. "They went to the security office."

"What do you suppose is going on?" asked Principal Adler to nobody in particular.

In the east hall, ground floor-
John and Rashad entered the hall. There was nobody visible in the lobby from here.

John turns to Rashad,

"Which way to the security office?"

He looks at the doors and tries to work out which one it may be.

In the east hall, ground floor-
The only exits besides the doorway back to the cafeteria were the door at the end of the hall and the way back to the lobby.

"You can get there from the lobby," Tariq called back. "It'll be the first door on the right there."

John calls out, "Thanks!"

He then turns and heads towards the security office.

"What the hell is going on? Suits? Can that mean the Government has arrived?"

Rashad shrugs. I dunno man, I was thinking maybe he meant the cops, the FBI or something.

"Maybe they know whats going on? Lets see if we can hear what they are talking about man. You in?"

John moves quickly now towards the office, not wanting to miss out on a story.

Dr. Edward Singh eats his dinner and quietly fumes at the lack of mention in Stephanie's speech. It is as if they think he hasn't done a thing to contribute! EMPs and messages into space wouldn't save them. They didn't even stop to consider the ramifications of telling hostile aliens that their attack was a success! It was his research, admittedly with a little help from Dr. Hausmann's data, that would see them through this crisis. Stephanie Bridges had provided only temporary relief, and with that blasted EMP going he couldn't even use his computer to continue his work on the REAL solution. If only someone would listen to HIM...

"A bunch of suits just arrived," announces Tariq. "They went to the security office."

"Ah! The government has arrived. Excellent. Do not worry Dr. Hausmann, I will go inform them of the situation. Feel free to stay here and continue eating. It has been a long day for you and Ms. Bridges."

Dr. Edward Singh heads out, following after John and Rashad.

In the cafeteria-
"That's good news if the government's getting back on its feet," said Liz as Dr. Singh left.

Amelia poked her head in from the kitchen. "If anyone wants seconds, there will be more ready in a few minutes. There's still plenty, so eat up."

"Let me know when you are ready," said Tariq, "and I will serve it. I could do with some more myself. It is very good." He sat down next to Samir.

In the east hall, ground floor-
Dr. Edward Singh walked into the hall past the broken down cafeteria doors. He could see John Lee and Rashad Sadiq in the lobby.

In the lobby-
John Lee and Rashad entered. They could hear voices conversing in the security office. The doorway gaped open, the door having been broken in earlier.

OOC,[b]John[/b] and [b]Rashad[/b], if you want to stay in the lobby without entering the security office, roll Listen. The base skill is 25%.

Dr. Singh strides into the lobby behind John and Rashad. Noticing them intently listening to something, he can't help but overhear something as well.

Rashad holds up a hand. He listens at the door for a moment, hearing something.

In the cafeteria-
Amelia went back into the kitchen.

"They're working on the bus out behind the school," said Tariq. "I saw them when I was up on the roof giving Dr. Saunders her dinner. She's up there by herself, keeping an eye on the device and our surroundings."

In the east hall, ground floor-
Dr. SIngh entered the lobby.

In the lobby-
Dr. Singh joined Rashad Sadiq and John Lee in the lobby. They had stopped short of the open doorway leading to the security office. John Lee had also heard what was going on within.

Dr. Edward Singh/Rashad Sadiq/John Lee,"This man is suffering from some kind of severe mental illness," said a male voice. "No doubt this illness was brought out by today's events. He seems highly unstable and dangerous to me. I recommend that you lock him up in that other cell." [b]Megan Petrovich[/b] cleared her throat. "He's right in the room with you and can hear every word you're saying," she said. "Don't they teach you Feds people skills?" "Please excuse my partner," said a female. "It's been a rough day for all of us." "Rougher for some than others," said [b]Kyle[/b]. "Have any of you seen this individual?" the first man asked. "That's [b]John Lee[/b]," said [b]Megan[/b]. "He came to the school about an hour or so ago. Why are you looking for him?" "He's a person of interest in a homicide that took place early this morning in Cheyenne," said the other woman again. "We'd like to ask him some questions." "Well, he's in the cafeteria, eating supper, along with most everybody else." "Thank you. Come on, [b]Miles[/b], let's go." Two sets of footsteps were approaching the lobby.

"Yet another murderer? As if we did not have enough troubles as it is. Out of the way boy, the adults need to speak."

Dr. Singh pushes past John Lee and head towards the security room door to meet the federal agents.

John listens for a bit,

"Come on, there is something wrong here."

He turns and looks towards the corridor, His eyes scanning for an exit.

John looks at the others,

'Follow me, I feel these guys are covering something up. I will explain later."

John then sprints towards the door to the north.

Jerry goes to the security office

She try to see if any of the scientist is resuming their work, so she may be helpful.

In the cafeteria-
"I've just finished eating," said Stephanie to Michiko. "I'm ready to start working on that second EMP generator now. We might as well get as much done as we can while it's still light out. I can use all the help I can get."

"I'll give you a hand," said Adam Donnelly, getting up from the table.

"I'll be glad to come along," said Chester Johnson, joining them.

"Can I come too?" asked Elijah.

"Sure!" said Stephanie. "Let's go." The group left the cafeteria, following Jerry into the east hall.

"Have fun!" called Liz as they left.

In the east hall, ground floor-
Jerry Law walked out of the cafeteria and into the east hall. The scientists and students were a short distance behind him. Up ahead in the lobby they could hear a commotion.

In the lobby-

"Yes, of course," said Tariq. He stood up and entered the kitchen.

Jerry Law headed into the lobby. Stephanie led Adam, Chester, Michiko, and Elijah in the same direction.

Amelia and Tariq loaded up his tray with more food.

Tariq took his tray and returned to the cafeteria, leaving Amelia to tend to the kitchen.

"Who wants seconds?" asked Tariq as he returned.

In the cafeteria-
Alvin, Murray, and Dr. Singh returned to the cafeteria to find Tariq serving seconds.

"I know I need to watch my figure," said Liz, "but it's so good I have to have more. Besides, it'll go bad if we don't eat it tonight, and who knows when we'll have another chance to eat so well?"

"Enjoy," said Tariq, giving her another plate of chicken.

In the cafeteria-
Tariq continued serving seconds to everyone who wanted them. Alvin sat down again and took a big helping for himself and for Murray.

In the cafeteria-
Tariq finished serving everyone who wanted seconds, then took a helping for himself and sat down with Samir Hossein.

In the cafeteria-
Becky entered from the hall.

In the cafeteria-
"You're just in time for dessert, Becky," said Principal Adler. "They should start serving it in a few minutes."

"Thanks," said Becky. "I'm looking for anyone else to help work on the bus. Donald was doing a lot of the work, but he went off to follow these federal agents after they arrested that Chinese kid."

In the cafeteria-
"I volunteer, ma'am!" said Alvin, standing up. "We'll have that APC working in no time." Murray barked and followed him.

"Anyone else?" asked Becky.

"Megan Petrovich might be able to help you," said Principal Adler. "She's in the security office guarding Kyle. Someone would have to take over guard duty for her."

"Thanks, I can do that. Let's go." She led Alvin and Murray out into the hall.

In the cafeteria-
Chester and Michiko walked in from the hall. Amelia poked her head in from the kitchen. "Oh, good, you're just in time!" she called. "Dessert's about to be served. Tariq, can you give me a hand?"

"Coming," said Tariq, getting up from the table and heading over to the kitchen.

"I'll have mine to go," said Chester. "I'll also need some for Stephanie, Eljah, and Adam up in the science lab."

"Okay," said Amelia, "but you have to promise not to eat theirs."

Chester grinned and held up a hand with his fingers crossed. "I promise nothing."

Amelia chuckled and shook her head, then returned to the kitchen.

-I'l go with you, so to be sure you won't eat what you are not suposed!

In the cafeteria-
"Oh, eat all you want," called Amelia with a laugh. "It'll only melt otherwise. I'll make sure to give you extra."

"Thanks!" said Chester. "Say, you have experience hunting and trapping back in Louisiana, right, Amelia? Officer Wheeler and the others who went looking for Erica have been gone for a long time. Jerry was talking about trying to find them. Maybe you could help follow their trail."

"Maybe. I'll go talk to him and see what I can do. I'll be out in a minute."

In the cafeteria-
Amelia and Tariq returned with trays filled with bowls of ice cream. Some were chocolate, some vanilla, and some strawberry. Amelia gave a smaller tray with several bowls to Chester while Tariq started handing out bowls to those seated in the cafeteria.

"Let's get back to the lab," Chester said to Michiko. "Thanks, Amelia." He led the way back out to the hall.

In the cafeteria-
Michiko followed Chester back to the hallway. Once Amelia finished distributing her ice cream, she followed. Tariq continued serving everyone else in the cafeteria.

As the survivors finished their dessert, the sky began to grow darker outside. They had made it through the first day, but what horrors would tomorrow bring?
