ONWARD! (GAEIRMUND)

Post by DSIGFUSS »

Darkness has now fully set in on the snowy plains of Helluland; the moon just a fraction away from being no moon at all. Still Gaeirmund sparks a torch and tries his best to lead Captain Gunharr back to the frozen lake where the Skraeling had fallen through the ice.

Captain Gunharr calls out to Ingvar and Gudrun as the two walk off from the pack to exchange words.

Image

Keep up yah Swags! If we loose the knife I’ll gut the both of yah!

Of all the survivors of the Icebreaker, few now remained….

Tristan and the oarsman Olaf were missing. They had followed Gaeirmund and the Skraeling after the battle with the black scaled creatures had ended. Neither had returned…

The Viking military strategist Logain, who had seemed out of sorts since his Captain had drowned and come back as the Blue skinned Gunharr, followed obediently in silence.

Behind the Captain, Brodi, who was gravely wounded in the attack by the black scaled creatures, was pulled on a makeshift gurney of driftwood and rope bindings by two Viking oarsmen Gaeirmund had come to know as Snori and Arfast.

Now Ingvar and Gudrun threatened to fall behind as well. Captain Gunharr paid them no mind and pushed whatever men remained forward to the lake where they lost the Skraeling and the scramasax blade that would lead them all to treasures beyond their wildest dreams.

And finally, Torvil, an archer friend of Gudrun’s, watched with worrisome eyes as his friend stormed off. He quickly fell into line beside Logain, casting fearful glances back at Gudrun and Ingvar as he marched.

Captain Gunharr grunts and then turns to Gaeirmund.

Do you think the black beasties got the Skraeling then Gaeirmund? It all seems so wrong! The Qallupilluk are child snatchers you see! They take the Skaeling lads and lasses back to their caves under the ice. They turn them for whatever purpose... Rarely do they hunt men! I wonder who these Qallupilluk serve?

Gunharr asked this question mostly to himself, but still looks to Gaeirmund for some sort of response.

Gaeirmund leads Captain Gunharr and his motley crew of Vikings across the snowy plains of Helluland, following his footprints in the night. He can see Ingvar and Gudrun trailing behind them having some sort of awkward conversation.

They walk for nearly an hour and Gaeirmund is now certain he is following the wrong set of tracks as another Viking boot comes into play. Sensing his moment of confusion, Captain Gunharr eyes Gaeirmund carefully and then points to a large lump in the snow. Gaeirmund sees a glint of metal shine through the flaked snow covering whatever lies beneath.

Gunharr flashes Gaeirmund a wicked look before shaking his head in the lumps direction.

Check it out lad!

Gaeirmund brushes off the snow with a swipe of his gloved hand and stares at what he uncovers.

Gaeirmund uncovers the body of one of his fellow Vikings. The war master Logain steps forward and identifies the man.

His name is Olaf captain. After we dispatched those black scaled horrors, Olaf and Tristan took off in pursuit of the Skraeling. Neither returned. It appears we now know why.

Gaeirmund spots a set of footprints in the snow heading north.

Then to the west he spots a glint of metal through the falling snow. A voice calls out... it sounds like Tristan.

Help me!

"Captain, it sounds like Tristan needs help!"

Gaeirmund moves quickly towards the metal glint, aware that it might be a trap.

Captain Gunharr looks to Logain and jerks his head intending the warmaster to follow Gaeirmund.

The two Vikings move towards the sound of Tristans's voice. As they get closer and the thickness of the falling snow begins to fade, they both spot a black lump half covered in snow no more than 20 feet away. Th metal glint of lights shines from the lump and Tristan's voice calls out once again.

Help me!

Logain stops and squints towards the lump hoping for a better look.

"Tristan's armor. Either it's dead on top of him or eating him."

Gaeirmund continues to approach the lump.

"I'll try shouting."

"Tristan!"

There is no answer...

Then the Vikings hears the same voice coming from the east and a similar glint of light appear in the distance where the same voice calls.

Help me!

Logain turns and scowls.

These black scaled beasts play with us Captain...

He runs up to the black lump and kicks it with his armored boot. The dead black scaled creature turns over uncovering two of Tristan's feather tipped arrows lodged deep in his chest.

This is madness. They play with our minds. Make us see the light of our brothers mail.. Tristan is dead! We should not linger!

Captain Gunharr remains ever silent and watches the lansdscape through the light blizzard.

Gaeirmund spots several black shapes moving in the distance from the south. They look like they are spreading out to out-flank the Vikings. Additionally, and more difficult to spot, Gaeirmund notices a set of foot prints heading north from the spot where the Viking Olaf was found. They look like they were made by a man.

"Footprints - " Gaeirmund points out to his captain, "but also trouble," and he indicates the flanking figures, readying his hammer.

"I can't tell who they are."

Captain Gunharr eyes the black scaled monsters at the edge of their vision.
They don't seem to be getting any closer.

Ignore what your eyes see lads. These foul beasts can get inside your mind. Make you see things. If there were as many as we see now, they'd surely press their advantage. Still we don't have time to run off after foolish Vikings in the snow. If Tristan be alive, he's on his own for now and may Hela watch over his soul. Gaeirmund! Take us to where you left the Skraeling and be quick about it.

ooc - sory this took so long. I was waiting for the damn skraeling.

Gaeirmund's sense of direction fails him and he takes the Viking party on a long seemingly hopeless search for the lake with the thinning ice where the skraeling prisoner Tornuaq fell through the ice. Captain Gunharr snarled at Gaeimund seveal times on the long walk, threating the viking oarsman with death and much much worse if he lost the scramasax.

As they pressed forward through the snow, the cries of Tristan echoed all around them. Fist in front of them, then behind. Captain Gunharr had to ensure the others that it was all an illusion. A skraeling devil haunting them in the snow.... Press on Boys! he'd call If there were more than just a few of the black scaled devils they surely would have taken us by now. Stick together!.

Just when it semeed as though Gunharr was about to finally lose it, Gaeirmund spots the blue tint of distant fresh water flowing in the distance. He remembers there were two tributaries flowing out of the lake. One heading north towards the mountains and another south to the sea. He could not mistake the river, nor the direction the water was flowing. The river was flowing from south to the north, contrary to the laws of nature. The water ran from the ocean to the mountains as if Helluland was making its best efforts to drink the ocean dry.

With this in mind, now Gaeirmund had to make his best guess as to where the lake was situated. North of the river... or south. If he could figure where they were based on the stars he might have a better guess as to which way to the lake.

ooc - Gaiermund make another navigation check or make your best guess.
