IC-GOLD-Triage(Everyone)

Z-Day - 3:13 PM Mountain Time - Warren Air Force Base, west of Cheyenne, Wyoming
Outside the clinic-
The Stryker pulled into the parking lot from the north, turning around and rolling to a stop not far from the entrance, behind and to the left of the other, damaged Stryker. The rear panel opened and nine figures in orange Racal suits emerged. Another climbed out of the front crew compartment, on the passenger side. Some of them were armed with M-16A2 assault rifles, including Airman First Class Sebastian Harper, but a few were not. The man who was first out of the Stryker had an unusual sniper rifle that did not even look American. The man who followed him toted an MP-5 submachine gun, and the woman beside him had an M4 carbine. The woman who emerged last from the belly of the vehicle was armed only with a pistol. All of them had their weapons drawn, though they held them pointed toward the ground.

"I'm Captain Claire Kelleher," said the woman with the pistol. "I'm a medical doctor and the one in charge of these reinforcements." She indicated the man with the sniper rifle. "This is Regimental Sergeant Major Raymond Crew, attached to the USAF from the RAF. He's my chief NCO." She pointed out the man and the woman right behind him. "These are Senior Airman Sam Wright and Technical Sergeant Jessica Valdez, and they're in charge of the fire teams. Let's get everyone moved inside. The civilians shouldn't even be out here." She looked up to the roof, where other civilians waited, along with two snipers in orange suits, then walked up to the orange-suited man with the leg wound. "Captain Nils Johansen, I presume? What can you tell me about what happened here?"'

Colin Lewis, the big man who was struggling against the nurses and orderlies in orange suits, was solidly gripped by Airmen Catherine Rourke and Gary Simpson, and he was unable to resist any further for now. Lt. Oscar Gomez stepped back from them, a syringe in his hand.
Colin Lewis,You have been rendered immobile, and you may no longer attack as long as both of the people grabbing you hold onto you. In addition, you have been injected with a strong sedative. You'll need to make a Resistance Table roll in order to overcome its effects: your CON of 16 against its POT of 17. This gives you a 45% chance of not being knocked out. Even if you fail, unconsciousness won't happen immediately, and you may act this round. You cannot attack or flee, but you can still speak. Feel free to scream your head off and stuff.
On the roof-
The snipers on the roof began to relax when they saw the reinforcements arrive and the orderlies restraining Colin Lewis. So did the civilians up there with them, who had been afraid they would open fire.

Colin felt the needle sink into his skin but he had been through lots more in war then a little needle and refused to give in. He screamed, "Let me go! I was a soldier in Iraq, I have fought many battles, I can fight this one, I will kill my share of the undead, I am a good soldier, I won many awards in Iraq and killed many members of AlQada. LET ME GO YOU ASSHOLES! OR SIMPLY KILL ME NOW!"

Captain Johansen holsters his pistol. You would be correct, Captain Kelleher. A short time ago a Stryker arrived to our position, clearly out of control and crashed into the outer wall. We sequestered the civilians on the roof for protection and myself and several of my soldiers came out to investigate. The crew were KIA and reanimated, and attacked us as we opened it. Nobody was injured and all of the infected were eliminated, but one of the civilians sneaked away and was shot when he was mistaken for an infected. He seems to be alright. He gestures to Colin. Mr. Lewis here grabbed a weapon and tried to break quarantine, and we restrained him. He's been sedated, he shouldn't be anymore trouble.

Frank Hodges approached the woman: "Pvt. Frank Hodges, ma'am. I've been neck deep in this shit along side the civillians since hour one. My team was dispatched to an old roadside motel the protect a comm unit. Me and the men in my group fought and died along side the civilians. Many of them watched their entire families die today at the hands of zombies, infected animals and collosal worms that eneded up destroying the motel." Motioning to Colin Lewis: "As you can see, the civilians want to help us fight the threat. They don't like being without their weapons as they've seen first hand how quickly things can go to hell. They also are a little weary of being under military guard after what happened at the motel. We and tried to protect them but there was nothing we could do. The worm and the endless waves of zombies broke down all of our defenses. All we had was each other out there and I'd put my life in the hands of any of the civilians here, as I have already done several times today. I understand that we need to quarentine folks and make sure they are not infected, which is fine, but once they are cleared, I would like to suggest that we integrate them into the larger team here. Let them be active aprticipants in their own suvival and ours, please. Everyone is feeling like we've lost control of the whole natrual order of the world...of our lives. Let me be in control of their own survival. It is the only thing any of us have left."

Outside the clinic-
"Reanimated?!" said Captain Kelleher, shaking her head. "No, what must have happened was that someone in the Stryker was infected and spread that infection to the others. What you're talking about is medically impossible. We'll have to tow that damaged Stryker back to the motor pool for repairs. Crew, hitch it to the back of our Stryker."

"Roger that, ma'am," said Crew, heading over to comply with her order. Senior Airman Roger Coltrane drove the damaged Stryker into position and then got out of the vehicle.

While they did this, Captain Kelleher continued speaking. "Airman Hodges, while I appreciate that you've been through hell, we have our procedures in place for a reason. I have my orders and I can't go against them any more than Captain Johansen can. Once everyone has been screened for infection and for psychological fitness for duty, rest assured that they will be assigned duties. You're all going to have to be patient here, but the sooner all of you get back inside where you belong, the faster this can go."

"Psychological fitness for duty, ma'am?" asked Lt. Gomez.

"Several of the people here are showing signs of mental instability. I'm not sure if it's a side effect of infection or simply due to the stress of the day, but it's cause for concern. All of this talk of the dead rising - and now giant worms - for instance. I am concerned about the possibility of the infection spreading to animals, but I'd like some confirmation on that. I realize that you truly believe you have seen these things, but perhaps your senses are not to be trusted." She glanced at Colin Lewis. "This man appears to be the most extreme example of what I'm talking about."

"He did seize a weapon, ma'am," said Lt. Ellison. "Twice, in fact. He was eventually convinced to surrender them, but he has threatened Captain Johansen and others."

Catherine Rourke nodded as she and Gary Simpson wrestled Colin onto the gurney as he tried to resist the effects of the sedative flowing through his bloodstream. "He tried to kick me, ma'am," she said.

"He sure is taking a while to go down," added Simpson, helping her strap him down.

"Sometimes it can take a little while for it to kick in," said Lt. Evans, "especially for a big, tough guy."
Colin Lewis,Roll Idea.
Frank Hodges,Frank could feel himself getting more and more feverish. Now that the heat of battle had passed, he finally noticed how weak he felt. Frank, roll CON x 5. Colin Lewis,Colin realized that if he continued to struggle, they would figure out that the sedative wasn't going to knock him out and might give him another dose. If he pretended to pass out, he might have an opportunity to escape later when they weren't paying attention.

Melinda sarts talking to Colin
-Colin, stop fighting. In a couple of hours the zombies will appear again. The militaries will be busy fighting and when most of them will be dead or in panic, we will escape at that moment. Let them talk whateaver they want about rationality. They will be screaming like babies like the others and we will have our chance.

" I'm starting to get really fucking tired of all of you being such dip shits. The only reason you may think I am 'psycologically stressed' is because I've been fighting for my life all day long and at every turn you pencil pushing assholes refuse to pull your heads out of your asses and grasp the situation." Frank continues to talk as he begins to take off his helmet and his vest. Unshouldering his riffle, the rifles he picked up and his pack, he throws them on the ground in front of him. "The inability of all of you to listen to those of us who have are the most experienced with the rapidly degenerating situation around us is the greatest threat to everyone." Frank draws his service pistol and starts to walk towards the infirmary. "Follow me to a holding cell and I'll open all of your eyes."
Frank stagers a bit as he walks, but stays strong and moves towards the holding cells.

Outside the clinic-
It took Frank Hodges a minute to strip off his protective vest and discard all of the rifles, so he didn't have a chance to go inside just yet. "Frank, if you're going to do what I think you're going to do," said Senior Airman Roger Coltrane while he did this, reading his friend like an open book, "don't do it."

Captain Kelleher scratched her head. "A holding cell?" she said. "What are you talking about, Airman?"

"We don't have holding cells," said Lt. Gomez. "This is a hospital, not a brig. The closest thing we have is a couple of padded cells. That's where we're going to take this gentleman." He patted Colin on the shoulder. He too didn't understand what Frank meant to do. He nodded to Catherine Rourke and Gary Simpson, and they followed him inside, pushing the gurney.

Lt. Evans frowned. "Airman, if you're planning to kill yourself to demonstrate to the new arrivals what we already know is true, I can't let you do that. It would be a terrible waste, and dangerous for the rest of us besides. We still need you. We'll find another way to convince them."

"Or they'll learn the hard way," said Lt. Ellison. "Like we did."

"Nobody else is going to die," said Captain Kelleher. "We're not all going inside anyway. Sergeant Valdez and I are the only ones who will actually be stationed within the clinic. Sergeant Major Crew and the two fire teams will secure the perimeter and make sure nobody infected gets in - or out."

"Yes, ma'am," said Sergeant Major Crew. "I'll set up my command post on the roof. Anyone else with sharpshooting skills would be useful there. I know what Sergeant Valdez and Senior Airman Wright can do, but I didn't have a chance to meet the members of the teams you've chosen or review their files. Let's start with Alpha Team. Each of you tell me in turn who you are and what you can do." He approached Harper first.

Claire Kelleher waved at the driver of the Stryker she had arrived in. The Stryker pulled out and turned around to the north, towing the damaged Stryker behind it. "Lt. Colonel Carmichael, we've arrived at the clinic and the situation appears to be under control for now," she reported into her radio.

"That's good to hear, Captain," replied Carmichael.

"There have been some breaches of quarantine, but nobody has gone beyond the clinic's parking lot. We're getting everyone back inside now."

"Let me know when that's done. I'll address everyone on the radio once you're all inside and the building is secure."

In the intake area-
Lt. Rebecca Doolittle looked up as Lt. Gomez entered, followed by Catherine and Gary wheeling in Colin, who was strapped to the gurney. "What happened out there?" she asked.

"A lot of scared people acting scared, that's all," said Gomez. "Our reinforcements are here. This guy got a little violent and had to be sedated. He should stay under for at least an hour or so."

On the roof-
The snipers relaxed a little now that things seemed to be settling down.

"I'm Airman Sebastian Harper, Sergeant Major. I'm the unit Demo expert, If it goes boom then I can cook it, build it , use it or defuse it. I'm also a pretty good shot with a rifle too." Sebastian gives Crew a slightly cocky but friendly smile. Secretly he's waiting to see how he'll react to all the tattoos that Harper doesn't bother to cover up.

"Off to the padded cells, then." Hodges said. As he walked, he unwrapped the bandage off of hit arm. He kept walking but turned back towards the others as he did so, showing them his unbandaged wound: "I've been bitten. I'm already dead. I don't have much time."

Outside the clinic-
Captain Kelleher, Lt. Evans, Lt. Ellison, and Senior Airman Coltrane entered the clinic.

Amanda put an arm around Keith and started guiding him towards the door. "Come on, Melinda," she said. "Help me get my son inside."

Sergeant Major Crew nodded at Harper, a big grin on his face. If he had any reaction to the tattoos, Harper couldn't see it. "Good. I specifically asked for a demo expert, and one that can shoot well is a bonus. You'll be up on the roof with me, then. Right, who's next?" He approached a woman in an orange suit standing next to Harper. "Your turn, Airman."

"Phyllis Darrow, Sergeant Major," she said matter-of-factly. "I'm just a grunt."

"Nobody's just a grunt."

"She's a rifleman in my fire team, Sergeant Major," said Sam Wright. "She's had some combat training."

"I see." He turned to the third member of Wright's team. "And you are?"

"AIrman Basic Ken Raffin, Sergeant Major," he said. "I've had basic training, but that's about it so far. I only just joined up."

"Right, you and Darrow will join Senior Airman Wright in guarding the main entrance. Hopefully you lot will do a better job than the last bunch. Let's see what Bravo Team has to offer." He walked over to Technical Sergeant Valdez and her people, approaching Airman Marcus Winters first. "Okay, Airman, sell yourself."

On the roof-
"You guys can head on downstairs now, I guess," said AIrman Wesson. "Looks like it's over - at least for now."

"Okay," said Zorie Spooner. "Let's go back inside." She led David, Lisa, Robert, and Beth into the stairwell.

In the intake area-
Captain Kelleher froze in her tracks when Frank Hodges announced he'd been bitten. Airman Rourke turned and covered him with her rifle, but she held her fire.

"You've been bitten?!" said Captain Kelleher. "When did this happen? In the battle just before I got here? Let me look at the wound."

"Don't throw your life away," said Roger Coltrane. "There's still a chance the medical staff can find something to help you. Zorie Spooner is a smart cookie, and the rest of these folks are no slouches either. At the very least, they can learn something from studying the course of the infection that could help the next person."
OOC,Everyone currently in the intake area or who enters it this turn, roll Listen. The base skill is 25%.

Frank's heart pounded as his body tried unsuccessfully to fight the infection. Vessels pulsed in his head and ears, making it impossible to hear anything.

"Airman Marcus Winters, Sargent Major. I'm a medic. I've had quite a bit of firearms training but little combat experience."

Outside the clinic-
"Good, we could use a medic," said Crew. "You'll be stationed inside the clinic with Sergeant Valdez and Captain Kelleher, but you'll be ready to respond anywhere if you're needed."

"He's one of the best, Sergeant Major," said Jessica Valdez.

"I don't doubt it. You two head on inside and get started." Crew turned to Airman Basic Buck Feaster next. "Aren't you a little too old to be an Airman Basic? What's your story?"

"Come on, Airman Winters," Sergeant Valdez told Marcus. "Let's go assist the doctors." She led the way into the intake area. Amanda, Melinda, and Keith followed.
OOC,Marcus, assuming you obey orders and go inside, you should roll Listen. You need to get less than or equal to your skill level, which in this case is 50, on 1d100. You should roll on Invisible Castle as explained in the Rules and Guidelines thread.
In the intake area-
"Oh, we'll get you to a secure room, all right, Airman," said Captain Claire Kelleher. "But don't even think about trying to off yourself. If you punch out early, you'd better hope you don't reanimate. Otherwise I'm gong to court-martial your ass. Got it?" She said this a smile, so that he would know she was half-joking. She led the Frank Hodges into the operating theater beyond the double doors at the back of the intake area. Airman Rourke followed, covering him with her rifle, while Airman Simpson and Lt. Gomez pushed the cart where Colin was strapped down after them. "Everyone else, stay put. We'll start the screening when we get back."

Jessica Valdez entered the intake area from the vestibule, carefully stepping around the bodies.
Captain Nils Johansen,Captain Johansen heard a single pair of footsteps in the distance. They were coming slowly from the south and heading towards the women's isolation ward (which was just south of the operating theater) from the direction of the stairwell.
In the operating theater-
Gomez and Simpson wheeled Colin's gurney in following Captain Kelleher, Frank Hodges, and Catherine Rourke. While Frank was feeling tired and feverish, he still had the strength to go on. He had been bitten about an hour ago, and from what he had been told, he knew he still had time and was not about to turn.

"Which way to the padded cells?" asked Claire Kelleher.

"Turn left here, ma'am," said Oscar Gomez. "They're past the men's iso ward and then to the right. I've got the keys."

She paused and lowered her voice. "Did you hear that? Sounds like someone's coming from over that way." She pointed to the right, in the direction of the women's isolation ward.
Colin Lewis,Colin heard a single pair of footsteps in the distance. They were coming slowly from the south and heading towards the women's isolation ward (which was just south of the operating theater) from the direction of the stairwell. If you ever want to try to break out of your straps, it will take a STR x 1 roll. However, anyone who is there will see you doing it and will know that you're still awake.
On the stairs-
Zorie didn't hear anything as she led the way down the stairs. Neither did Lisa or David. Beth, whose hearing was normally sharp, was not paying any attention. Only Robert made out any sounds below. "Someone's down there," he whispered. "Whoever it is just left the stairwell ahead of us, on the ground floor."

Outside the clinic-
"I got busted down, Sergeant Major," said Buck. "Got in a fight."

"Got any redeeming qualities?"

"I am a good fighter, and a very good shot with a rifle."

"Right, you'll be on roof duty, then." He looked at the last SF. "And you are?"

"Airman Pete Kowalski, Sergeant Major," he said. "I'm an expert marksman. Probably not as good as you, but still pretty good."

"Excellent. We can always use more sharpshooters. You'll be up on the roof too. Harper, Feaster, and Kowalski, you're all with me. Let's go." He led the way around the southwest corner of the building to the south side, where the fire escape was located.

In the intake area-
Winters entered the vestibule and the intake area, which looked like a disaster area. Bodies still lay bleeding on the floor, gurneys were strewn about haphazardly, and shell casings littered the floor. It was obvious there had been a recent battle here, but victory had clearly come at a cost.

Amanda hugged Melinda. "Don't even joke about that," she said. "We're going to live, all of us."
Airman Marcus Winters,Marcus could hear Captain Kelleher and the others conversing in the operating theater, through the double doors at the back. He listened to their footsteps walking away to the left, but he also heard a single pair of footsteps enter the operating theater from the right shortly afterwards.
In the operating theater-
Captain Kelleher led the others through the double doors to the men's isolation ward. SImpson and Gomez wheeled the gurney bearing Colin around the corner to the left and followed her, along with Frank Hodges and Airman Rourke.

In the men's isolation ward-
More carnage awaited Captain Kelleher and the others as they entered. Plenty of blood was pooled on the floor, but there were no bodies present.

"Which way now?" asked Claire Kelleher.

"Through the doors at the end and turn right," said Lt. Gomez. "The padded cells are just down that hall."

"Airman Hodges, please reconsider," said the captain. "We still need you."
Colin Lewis,Colin could still hear the footsteps gently padding along from somewhere behind him. They had entered the operating theater shortly after they left.
On the stairs-
"We'll keep going," whispered Zorie, "but be careful and quiet." She led her group to the ground floor landing, where the stairs continued to the basement and a door led to the women's isolation ward, which was deserted.

"Whoever it was left through there," said Robert, pointing at the door.

Outside the clinic-
Wright, Darrow, and Raffin took up their positions while the rest of the SFs followed Crew around the corner of the building. The fire escape was on the south side of the building, and the ladder had been lowered to the ground for easy access to the roof.

"Right," said Crew, "I'll go up first. Harper, you follow me. Kowalski, you're third. Feaster, you bring up the rear - and pull the ladder up behind you. I don't want anyone or anything coming up that fire escape." With that, he began to ascend the fire escape, reaching the first landing.

"Don't worry, I've got your back," Kowalski told Harper.
OOC,Sebastian Harper, you weren't able to start climbing the ladder last round, but now you can. You won't get all the way up this round. Feel free to talk to the people with you as you climb.
In the intake area-
"I know, sweetie," said Amanda, "but it's not going to happen again, not here. We're safe here now. We're finally safe." It was not clear whether she was trying to convince Melinda and Keith or herself.

"Nobody's going upstairs right now," said Lt. Sara Evans. "We've all got orders to wait here for screening."

"I'll go with you, sir," said Senior Airman Roger Coltrane. He followed Captain Johansen into the operating theater, his rifle at the ready.

In the operating theater-
Johansen and Coltrane walked into the operating theater just as a man in an orange suit crept in from the women's ward. He immediately put his hands up.

"Don't shoot!" he hissed, and they recognized his voice as that of Senior Airman Tom Wu. "Are we the only ones left alive?" He looked around nervously. "There are more of them behind me, they'll be here any second."

In the men's isolation ward-
Captain Kelleher led the way through the other end of the ward and around the corner to the right.

At the padded cells-
Shortly past the corner were two padded cells, one on either side of the hall. The doors were solidly built, with viewing slits set in them at head height. Kelleher pointed at the one on the left. "Hodges, in there." She then motioned at the other cell. "Put Mr. Lewis in that one." Lt. Gomez and Airman SImpson wheeled the gurney into the cell on the right, then locked the door, sealing Colin Lewis inside. Airman Rourke covered Frank Hodges as he walked into the left cell, and then Captain Kelleher locked that door with Rourke's keys.

"Hodges, please don't kill yourself," said Claire. "You've been fighting the infected for longer than any of us, and you have knowledge we need. You said yourself that people have been ignoring what you have to say. Well, I'm listening."
Colin Lewis,The viewing slit is closed, and nobody can see you. If you want to try to break free from your straps, you can try rolling STR x 1 now.
Airman Frank Hodges,If you wish to shoot yourself, you'll still need to roll. You cannot miss, but there might be a Malfunction or an impale. The range is point blank, and you may choose your hit location without penalty. If you don't get a Malfunction, go ahead and roll damage (2d10 instead of 1d10 if an impale occurs, which would be 1/5 or less of your doubled skill of 140%, or on a 28 or less).

Keith-
"it wil be okay, Sweetie" Keith said to Melinda. "Maybe we'll stand a chance here."
Turning to the men around him: "Okay, can we get the screenings started before more infected arrive? We'd really like to get somewhere safe, ya know."

Frank-
"You know, you're right, Clair. I have been fighting for a long time, infortunatly, I've been fighting all of you dipshit military personel!" Frank screamed to Clair. Calming down, he spoke again: "It's ironic that everyone is willing to listen now that I'm done trying to make you listen. Outside the clinic-
Harper scaled the ladder.

"And I guess you've got mine," said Kowalski to Feaster as he moved to the bottom of the ladder and waited for his turn to climb.

"Wait a minute, who's got my back?" asked Feaster.

On the fire escape-
Harper reached the first landing. Narrow stairs led the rest of the way up to the roof.
OOC,Harper, you can reach the roof this turn.
On the roof-
Crew emerged onto the roof, where he saw two men in orange Racal suits with sniper rifles. "And who might you lot be?" he asked.

"I'm Airman Wesson," said one of them. "My partner here is Airman Smith. Somebody upstairs must have thought it would be funny to pair us up."

"Right, I guess you're under my command now. I'm Sergeant Major Raymond Crew. Keep a sharp eye out, lads."

In the intake area-
"Captain Kelleher will start the screening once she gets back," said Sergeant Jessica Valdez. "You'll be safe right here now that we've arrived. In the meantime, does anyone need medical attention?" She looked Keith over. "It looks like they've already done a good job on your wound, sir."

"Sir, maybe we should take a look at your leg now," said Lt. Sara Evans to Captain Johansen.

In the operating theater-
"Don't you remember, sir?" asked Senior AIrman Wu, raising his arms higher and shaking. He stepped nervously over to the captain. "They attacked the front entrance. I got away and hid downstairs. I thought everyone else must have been killed. I turned off my radio because I couldn't stand hearing all the screams." He looked over his shoulder and jumped when Zorie Spooner stepped through the door from the women's ward, followed quickly by Beth, Robert, David, and Lisa. "You're alive!"

"Observant, isn't he?" said David.

"Captain Johansen," said Zorie, "I've brought the rest of the civilians down from the roof."

At the padded cells-
"Getting a bit familiar, aren't we, Airman?" said Captain Claire Kelleher. "You don't call superior officers by the first names, but I can excuse the lapse in discipline under the circumstances. I'll leave if you want, but I'm not leaving you unguarded. If you do succumb to the infection, I'll need someone standing watch."

"I volunteer, ma'am," said Catherine Rourke instantly.

"I'll stay with him too," offered Airman Gary Simpson.

"Thank you both," said Captain Kelleher. "Call if you need anything. I'll screen you two later. Lt. Gomez, you're with me." The two of them went around the corner and into the men's ward.
Colin Lewis,Inside his cell, Colin strained at the straps keeping him down, but they were holding in spite of his obvious might. Colin, you may try another STR x 1 roll now.

Outside the clinic-
Kowalski headed up the ladder to the fire escape landing, leaving Feaster alone at the bottom.

On the roof-
Harper emerged onto the roof, where Crew was already setting up his L1A1 sniper rifle. He swiveled the scope around and peered through it. "We can get a good view of the rest of the base from up here," he said, then glanced over at Harper. "Good, you're here. Airman First Class Harper, this sniper team has the unlikely names of Smith and Wesson. They were here before us, so I'm sure they know what went down before we got here. Chaps, this is Sebastian Harper, my demolitions expert." He spoke into his radio. "This is Crew. I'm on the roof, and the area looks secure. No sign of any hostiles."

"Nice to meet you," said Wesson. Smith just nodded.

At the padded cells-
Airman Gary Simpson and Airman Catherine Rourke took up their posts in the hallway, their attention on Frank Hodges's cell. "Anything I can do for you, Hodges?" asked Rourke.
Colin Lewis,Colin, you may try another STR x 1 roll if you wish.
In the men's isolation ward-
Captain Kelleher and Lt. Gomez walked through the ward and into the operating theater.

In the operating theater-
Senior Airman Wu and Senior Airman Coltrane followed Captain Johansen back to the intake area. Zorie went next, followed by Beth, Robert, Lisa, and David. Captain Kelleher and Lt. Gomez entered the operating theater from the men's ward. "We're right behind you!" she called. She spoke into her radio. "Lt. Colonel Carmichael, this is Captain Kelleher. We've secured the clinic, and we're about to begin the screenings. Airman Frank Hodges is known to be infected, and we have him under guard locked in a padded cell. One of the civilians, a Mr. Lewis, has broken under the stress and has assaulted one of the orderlies, though he is not showing any symptoms at this time. We locked him in the other padded cell."

"Good place for him," remarked Gomez to himself.

In the intake area-
Lt. Sara Evans looked back to the doors to the operating theater as people began to return. She saluted Captain Johansen. "Welcome back, sir," she said. Then she noticed Senior Airman Tom Wu and walked up to him, holding out the M4. "I believe this belongs to you. Take care not to lose it again. That mad civilian got his hands on it, and we're lucky the whole thing didn't end in bloodshed."

In the operating theater-
Captain Kelleher and Lt. Gomez returned to the intake area.

In the intake area-
"Thank you, sir," said Senior Airman Wu. He accepted his M4 from Lt. Evans and shamefacedly looked at his feet.

"Understood, Captain," replied Carmichael. "Is everyone ready for the briefing?"

"Affirmative, sir," said Captain Kelleher. "Two of the orderlies are guarding the padded cells and some of our people are at the main entrance and on the roof, but they can all hear you on their radios."

"Thank you. Captain Johansen, you are hereby relieved of command. Captain Kelleher is now the commanding officer of this facility. You will continue to serve as her executive officer. Hold on, I'm getting an incoming message on another frequency." He paused for about half a minute, then continued speaking. "Captain Kelleher, prepare for incoming casualties. ETA three minutes."

"Sir, what happened?"

"A squad was sent to investigate a meteorite that had fallen in an open area within the base perimeter, near the southeast corner. It's not clear what exactly happened, but it appears there was a small-scale outbreak there. Security Forces are working right now to contain it. There are three survivors coming your way from the southeast."

Outside the clinic-
Feaster followed Kowalski up the fire escape ladder.

On the roof-
"Right here will be fine," said Crew. "Right now I'll be needing your shooting skills in case of attack. When something needs to be blown up, I'll let you know. Of course, I'm always open to any suggestions you may have to aid in our defense. What sorts of explosives and how many do you have on you? I understand that you didn't have any time to collect additional equipment, but we can requisition whatever you might need."

At that moment, the call from Lt. Colonel Carmichael came in on the radio.

"Right," said Crew, "everyone keep a sharp eye out."
OOC,Airman Harper, roll Spot Hidden. The base skill, since it's not listed on your character sheet, is 25%.
At the padded cells-
"Sorry, I don't smoke," said Catherine Rourke. "The only food we've got on us is MREs. You deserve better for your last meal, but it's either that or hospital chow. Maybe we can get something sent over."

"I've got some smokes," said Gary Simpson, taking out a pack of cigarettes and one of his rations. He unlocked the door and handed them to Frank Hodges. "Here ya go."

While he was doing that, they all heard the incoming message on the radio.

In the intake area:
Overhearing the conversation, Keith speaks up: "You best be careful! Those wounded are infected and are going to rise up like all the rests. We all witnessed it with our own eyes. You have to take them someplace secure."

IN the cell:
"Thanks, buddy." Frank said, grabbing the cigarette. He lit it and took a long drag off of it. "And they said these things would kill you.." he said with a laugh.
"A meal from the hospital would be great, but I don't want to put anyone at risk by having it sent over. Just give me an MRE and I'll be good." Taking another drag, he continued: "Hopefully you two will listen while the others out there are not. The infected and the wounded are not to be toyed with. Anyone that falls in battle, bitten or not, will turn into one of those thigns. Anyone. You hear me?"
"The only way to take them out is to shoot them in the head. Anywhere else and you'll only slow them down. If any of your squad mates falls in battle, you have to put a bullet in their heads before they get up again. I know you don't want to do it, but you have to. You'll be saving lives. Trust me."

On the roof-
"I like the way you think, Airman," said Crew to Harper. "I was thinking along similar lines myself. We can use the Claymores to establish a perimeter. They used them at a forward observation post this morning, and while they were only of limited effectiveness against the infected, they helped some and they make an excellent early warning system. I'll see if I can get you some." He spoke into his radio. "Captain Kelleher, this is Crew. Can you get your CO to send some Claymores our way, as many as he can? Any other explosives you can requisition would be of use too."

Kowalski and Feaster were now both on the roof as well. Harper didn't notice anything when he looked around, and neither did Crew.
OOC,Harper, you forgot to roll Spot Hidden, so I rolled for you.
In the intake area-
"I'll do that, Sergeant Major," replied Captain Kelleher to Crew.

"I'm going to be blunt with you, Captain Johansen," said Lt. Colonel Carmichael. "You have been wounded. Your suit has been breached, and you may be infected yourself for all you know. You continue to espouse this ridiculous notion of the dead coming back to life. In short, you have been compromised and I do not know that I can rely on you. Your experience will be useful, and you can give whatever advice you wish to Captain Kelleher - but make no mistake: she is in command. There's no time for arguments; you have incoming survivors who are potentially infected. Is that understood?"

"Sir, Sergeant Major Crew would like to requisition some Claymores, as well as any other explosives you can spare," said Captain Kelleher.

"I can arrange that. I can get you two dozen Claymores within half an hour, and I'll see what else we can scrounge up. Those Claymores will be useful for establishing a perimeter around the clinic. They should be arranged in two concentric rings. The outer ring will have the cones of fire pointed outward to deal with any external threats. The inner ring should be directed inwards, to ensure that nobody breaks quarantine again."

"We'll make sure that the wounded are secured," said Captain Kelleher. "Both padded cells are already occupied, so we may have to improvise. In any event, the new arrivals will be screened first. Lt. Evans, I'm going to need your assistance most of all to direct the nursing staff."

"Yes, ma'am," said Lt. Sara Evans. "It is true about the dead rising, ma'am. I know you find this hard to believe, but I've witnessed it myself."

"Let's put it this way: I believe that you believe it. I know you're sincere, but you need to be careful to whom you repeat that."

At the padded cells-
"No problem," said Simpson, giving Frank Hodges one of his MREs. "Don't worry. When the time comes, I'll do what I have to do." He locked the cell door again.

"We've seen it ourselves," said Catherine Rourke. "It's the reinforcements who haven't accepted it yet. I just hope they don't have to find out the hard way, like we did."
Colin Lewis,Colin strained at his straps, but he succeeded only in wearing himself out. They had bound him securely, evidently wanting to be certain that he did not get loose.
Colin, you may make another roll. Until further notice, you must now roll against STR x 1/2, so you will only succeed on an 8 or less.
In the intake area-

"Jesus christ!" Keith says loudly upon hearing the new captain. "Do we have to go through this bullshit again?! Can we civilians please leave the base, sir? We're tired of getting this same old run around. If you really want to see for yourself the dead rise, go back to the padded cells and check in with the airman who saved all of our lives. On the roof-
"We're only getting two dozen Claymores," Crew says to Harper, "so there will inevitably be access routes whether we want them or not. We'll know where you've planted the mines, so we'll be able to bypass them freely. From what I've seen, the infected are too bloody stupid to go around the mines even if they manage to spot them, but there's no point in making it easy for them. That inner ring of Claymores pointed inward will help contain an outbreak if we lose the clinic, but I have confidence that we won't let that happen."
OOC,Airman Harper, roll Listen. The base skill is 25%.
In the intake area-
"ETA is one minute, Captain," said Carmichael over the radio. "i suggest you get ready."

"We're on it, sir," said Captain Kelleher. "Some of the civilians have expressed a desire to leave the base. Can that be arranged?"

"First they beg to be let in, now they want out? Fine, if that's what they want. I'll send a Stryker once one becomes available to pick them up and take them beyond the perimeter. Let me know which ones want to go and I'll have their weapons ready to return to them once they're outside."

"Understood, sir." She relayed the colonel's message to Keith. "While we're helping the wounded, find out which people want to leave and put together a list of their names. Captain Johansen, you'll remain inside for now. You need to stay off your wounded leg as much as possible. Get ready for wounded. Evans, Valdez, and Winters, with me." She led the way through the vestibule and outside. Lt. Evans and Sergeant Valdez followed.
OOC,Airman Winters, assuming you obey orders and go outside, roll Listen.
At the padded cells-
"I'll try," said Catherine Rourke. She spoke into her radio. "This is Airman Rourke, at the padded cells. Airman Hodges is requesting the presence of Captain Kelleher."

"I'm a little busy right now," she replied. "We've got incoming casualties. I'll stop by when I get a free moment."

On the roof-
Crew had also heard the humvee approaching and turned to look at it. "Yes, I see it, Airman," he said. "Well spotted. Let's keep a weather eye on it." From their high vantage point, the men on the roof watched as the humvee entered the clinic's parking lot near the west side of the building.

Outside the clinic-
Captain Claire Kelleher led the way outside, followed by Lt. Sara Evans, Technical Sergeant Jessica Valdez, and Airman Marcus Winters. Senior Airman Sam Wright stood guard at the entrance with Airman Phyllis Darrow and Airman Basic Ken Raffin. As they watched, a humvee pulled up near the main entrance. Its windows were shattered, and three orange-suited figures were inside. The female driver was hunched over the wheel, and two men rode in the back. Both men had rips in their Racal suits, and their faceplates were broken. The woman put the vehicle in park and climbed out, leaning on its side.

"What happened?" asked Captain Kelleher.

"You wouldn't believe me, ma'am," said the driver. "Let's just get these guys inside; they're hurt bad."
OOC,Everyone outside the clinic, roll Spot Hidden. The base skill is 25% if it's not listed on your character sheet.

"My son isn't going anywhere without me," said Amanda Deeds.

"Then I'm coming with you," said Lisa. "I still think we'll be safer here, but I'll go wherever you do."

"Anyone else want to leave?" asked Lt. Barbara Ellison.

At the padded cells-
"Maybe they'll give you permission to leave too," Catherine suggested to Frank. "They probably don't want you on the base in your condition anyway. Want me to ask?"
Colin Lewis,Colin's straps still would not budge.
Colin, you should still post your roll, even if it's a bad one. If it's a critical failure, that could make matters worse. You may roll STR x 1 again.
"Good eye, Senior Airman," said Captain Kelleher. She turned to the driver. "I'm afraid he's right. If you've been stung, then an unknown substance may have been injected directly into your bloodstream. Not only that, but your suit has been compromised. You'll have to stay here. Can you walk?"

"I..I think so, ma'am. I'm just...I feel so sleepy..."

"Everyone, help me get these guys inside." Captain Kelleher, assisted by Airman Winters, helped one of the men out of the humvee. He was unable to move on his own, but he was still conscious, moaning in pain. His Racal suit had a few similar holes in it. Lt. Sara Evans and Technical Sergeant Jessica Valdez carried out the other man, who was unconscious but still breathing. His suit had several punctures like the others. The driver was able to stagger to the door and inside.

In the intake area-
"I want to leave," said Senior Airman Tom Wu.

"That's not even funny," said Lt. Ellison, frowning. She turned when she saw an unfamiiar woman in a Racal suit stumble inside. "Are you hurt?"

"I'll...be fine, ma'am," she said. "I just need to lie down." She hauled herself over to a gurney that the medical staff had set upright while they were waiting and climbed onto it.
OOC,Anyone in the intake area who wishes to examine her may roll Medicine.

"Airman Hodges?" asked Catherine, concerned. She looked through the glass window to make sure he hadn't died.

Seeing the wounded Keith gets a paniced look: "Sweetie, we need to get upstairs now. They are going to turn!"
Keith looks to the others in the room as me moved with Melinda and his mom to the stair well: "Be careful with them! They will turn as soon as they die. The insect bites are the worse. We saw it at the motel earlier today."

In the padded cell:
"Ma'am, you need to listen to the others out there. Anyone wounded is infected and will turn into a zombie when they die. This isn't a maybe, it's a given fact. Once they turn, you are all in a world of shit. Bullets need to be put in the heads on any one who dies out there. If you don't, you put everyones lives at risk."

On the roof-
"This lot weren't exactly scheduled," said Crew, "but no, as far as I know they're the last, until our supplies get here."

Outside the clinic-
Captain Kelleher and Airman Winters assisted the wounded man in moving inside, followed by Lt. Evans and Sergeant Valdez carrying the unconscious one. Senior Airman Wright took up his position guarding the main entrance once more.

In the intake area-
"Bit busy here, Airman Hodges," said Captain Kelleher into her radio as she and the others entered and placed the wounded onto gurneys.

Captain Johansen examined the driver. She didn't appear too badly hurt physically, and her only wound was the small hole in the back of her Racal suit. It looked like a sting from an animal of some sort, perhaps a scorpion, but it was too big to be a normal insect sting. That wouldn't have caused more than a pinprick in the suit, if that. From her symptoms, it seemed she was suffering from poison, perhaps a venom of some sort.

While the medical staff was busy running around and trying to deal with the wounded, Keith led Melinda through the doors to the operating theater. Amanda, Lisa, Beth, and Robert followed them.

In the operating theater-
"This isn't going to end pretty," said Amanda. "The stairs are that way." She pointed at the door to the women's isolation ward.

At the padded cells-
Relieved that Frank Hodges was all right, Catherine Rourke returned to her guard duty.

"I don't think the captain will listen until the truth bites her in the face," said Gary Simpson, "but you're welcome to try."

"I'm sure I can arrange that," Frank said with a smile. "Bring her back here. In about 15min I'll be trying to bite all of you in the face."

"Ignoring those with real world experience is going to get you or someone else killed, Captain" Frank said into the radio. "I have all the proof you need right here, if you'll just come back here." Frank could tell he was not going to convice the captain without taking drastic measures

In the womans ward-

"I think it'll be the soldiers that are will be easily killed, infortunatly." Keith said with worry. "They don't know to aim for the hear and will be sitting ducks down there, which is why we have to get somewhere safe."

"Sergeant Major, I've been thinking and I believe I have come up with a better solution to our perimeter problem. If we can get our hands on a bunch of flashbangs and some fishing wire I can set up a tripwire outer perimeter and use the claymores for closer to the building. This would let us close the holes from having so few claymores since the flashbangs are only limited by the length of the wire." Harper seems rather proud of himself for thinking up the new approach to the plan.

On the roof-
"Brilliant!" said Crew. "I'm sure they can get us some flashbangs and tripwires along with the Claymores." He opened up a channel to Carmichael. "Sir, can you add in a bunch of flashbangs and tripwires to that order of Claymores?" he asked. "Airman Harper came up with the idea of rigging up an early warning system with them around the outer perimeter."

"That can be arranged, Sergeant Major," answered Carmichael. "We haven't really been using flashbangs much today, as the infected aren't hindered by them at all, but here we can put them to good use. I'm glad you asked for that demolitions expert. You should have them a little before 4:00. Anything else to report?"

"Three injured survivors were brought into the clinic just now, sir. Other than that, all's quiet."

"Good. Let's hope it stays that way."

In the intake area-
Captain Johansen examined the sting wound. It was discolored around the edges, turning the skin on her back black in a ring surrounding the small hole. It definitely looked like some kind of venom, but he couldn't say what kind. There were antivenoms that could be used to treat poisonings, but there was no guarantee any of them would work, and they were often dangerous enough to be deadly in their own right.

The driver sighed. "I'll tell you," she said, "but you probably won't believe me. My unit was sent to investigate one of those meteorites that had come down. It was inside the base perimeter, in an open area. It was just lying in a smoking crater. As we got nearer to it, there was this buzzing sound coming from within it. It didn't even look like a rock, more like...an egg, I guess. You could almost see through its...shell. And there was something inside. When we got real close, the buzzing got even louder, and then it just cracked open! This yellow, awful-smelling mist came out, and then...the creatures attacked! They looked like giant mosquitoes, but they had claws and there were so many of them!" She began to cry. "We lost almost an entire platoon. People went down, and when they got back up they...they were infected. Only Russell and I stayed on our feet. We carried Yoshimuro to the Hummer and bugged out. We were all stung, but only one of them got me...it's just a flesh wound, really..."

Lt. Sara Evans examined and treated the unconscious man, who the driver had identified as Yoshimuro. "He's still alive," she said, "but we're losing him fast, ma'am!" She worked feverishly to keep the man alive. "He's got some kind of virulent toxin in his bloodstream. The only thing I can think of to save him is a massive transfusion. We'll have to replace all of the blood in his body, which means ten units!"

"We don't have that much O-neg!" said Wu. "What's his blood type?"

Lt. Evans checked his dog tags. "Crap! He's A-negative! Have we got enough A-neg and O-neg combined?"

"Barely. But do we want to use it all on him? Then we won't have any left for others, and he'll probably die anyway."

"Ma'am?" Sara asked Captain Kelleher.
Captain Claire Kelleher,You don't need to roll Idea to come up with something you think of something yourself, but you're free to do so if you wish. Please roll Medicine to see what information you got from your examination. You'll also need to decide what to do about Yoshimuro. In case you don't know, O-negative blood is the only type of blood that's a universal donor, so it's safe to give to anyone. Someone with A-negative blood type can only take A-negative or O-negative. There's a description of blood types and their compatibility for transfusions here.
In the operating theater-
Amanda and the other civilians went with Keith into the women's isolation ward.

In the women's isolation ward-
"They do know to shoot them in the head, at least," said Amanda. "It's only the new people who don't know that the dead are rising. The others already saw for themselves. They're not as weak as you think." Still, she didn't slow down her pace as she made for the stairs, pointing the way ahead. "This way."

At the padded cells-
There was no reply from Captain Kelleher on the radio yet. "She said she was busy," said Catherine Rourke to Frank. "We were ordered to stay here, so we can't leave our posts to go get her. We'll have to wait until she's free."

"Or eaten," said Simpson.
Colin Lewis,Looking through the eyeslit in the door, Colin could see that Rourke and Simpson were devoting their full attention to Frank Hodges in the cell across the hall and were not looking his way.
Colin Lewis, if you want to try to pick the lock, you'll have to roll Locksmith, but the base skill is only 1%. Alternatively, you may try to force the door open by rolling on the Resistance Table: your STR vs. the door's STR of 20. This gives you a 30% chance. However, this attempt will be heard by the guards in the hall. You can hear everything they're saying out there, and from the way they're talking, something could happen that would cause one or both of them to leave their post. Your chances may be better if you wait.
Handy,Would a full transfusion actually work or are we just going to let it slide for the sake of the game? I seem to recall a similar plan in the 28 Days later special features to cure the infection, but the director/writer saying it wouldn't be possible to replace every single drop of blood.
Captain Johansen tried to get a better look, looking for a stinger. Inside the perimeter? How far? He frowns and radios Carmichael. Sir, be advised we maybe have highly venomous, um, bugs I suppose inside the perimeter of the base. They appear to have wiped out an entire platoon of soldiers.

Captain Nils Johansen,Whether or not it would work is unknown, though it seems unlikely to succeed. Not every drop of blood could be replaced, but if the poison could be diluted enough, that might potentially save someone's life. It would definitely not work to cleanse someone's body of a virus or bacterium, but venom could be a different matter. This is just the only idea Lt. Evans could think of in the short amount of time available. I do intend to keep the game as realistic as possible. Granted, the walking dead and mosquitoes from space aren't exactly realistic, but aside from that. ;)

"I have never seen anything like this before." Captain Kelleher exclaims in an exasperated tone.
" I want all the casualties strapped to back boards before we continue. According to all the accounts I have heard infection is characterised by apparent death followed by some form of violent psychosis. I don't need to be fending off violent lunatics while I'm trying to work. Immobilisation is the best option. As to the blood transfusion, it is a waste of our blood stocks. How well equipped is this place? If we can get him hooked up to a dialysis machine it may remove the toxin."

In his cell-

"Right away, ma'am," said Tom Wu. He hurried through the double doors.

"Not far from the fence..." muttered the driver, closing her eyes and lying back. "So tired..."

"Hang in there," said Lt. Ellison. "We're going to do what we can for you."

"Right, bugs," replied Carmichael on the radio, the skepticism in his voice obvious. "Have you seen these bugs, Captain? Has anyone else? Are they attacking the clinic?"

On the roof-
Sergeant Major Crew noticed nothing.
Airman Sebastian Harper,Looking off to the southeast, Harper was able to make out what looked like a black cloud at low altitude not far from the base's perimeter fence. It seemed to be spreading out and thinning out, parts of it toward the fence and other parts toward the interior of the base. Some of it moved west, some north, and some northwest - heading closer to the clinic. As it moved closer, Harper could make out small individual shapes. There weren't that many of them, but they were clustered close together. The chatter on the radio made him wonder if it could be a swarm of those insects.
OOC,Airman Sebastian Harper, roll Listen. The base skill is 25%.
In the intake area-
Gomez followed Wu into the operating theater.

"All we know about whatever happened in the southeast part of the base is that there was some sort of outbreak," replied Carmichael on the radio. "We have Security Forces en route to deal with the threat there. This is the first I've heard of any insects, but I'd take the accounts of the survivors with a grain of salt. They're wounded and possibly delirious, and they could be affected mentally by whatever it is that's going around today. I'd like to hear Captain Kelleher's opinion when she's done treating the wounded. Really, she should be the one to talk to me, since she is in charge at your end, but I understand that she must be busy at the moment. Give her whatever assistance you can, Captain."

"He's going into cardiac arrest!" shouted Lt. Sara Evans. The heart monitor attached to the man she was examining showed he was flatlining, an eerie tone coming from its speakers. "Let's get the crash cart over here!" Lt. Ellison hurried to comply.
OOC,Anyone in the intake area may roll Spot Hidden.
In the operating theater-
Senior Airman Wu found the dialysis machine and a few back boards in relatively short order. He was gathering them up when Lt. Gomez entered from the intake area. "Sir," he said. "Let's get these back to the captain."

In the stairwell-
"That's a good idea," said Amanda. "They've probably locked the door too, so I doubt we'd be able to open it anyway." She hurried up the stairs with the others, soon reaching an upper floor landing. The stairs continued up to the roof.

At the padded cells-
Catherine Rourke and Gary Simpson continued to watch Frank Hodges.
Airman Sebastian Harper, if you want to open fire on the insects you may. You have five combat rounds before the next update. At this point you're at long range with your M-16, so your Rifle skill is halved. Also, these creatures are small targets, so there is a -20 penalty to hit them, applied after the penalty for range. On the roof-
Airman Wesson shouldered his sniper rifle and ran for the door, fishing out his keys and unlocking it hastily. "I'm sorry, sir," he said. "You can't come up here. It's not safe. We've got incoming!"

"If we have incoming," said Amanda on the other side of the now open door, "then wouldn't the safest place be on the roof?"

"No, ma'am...these things fly." He glanced to the southeast. "Holy crap!" His eyes went wide with terror, color draining from his face. However, his panic served only to spur him on, and he did not think about what was coming. Smith grabbed up his rifle and followed, making a more orderly retreat to the door. Kowalski also remained calm, and so did Feaster - barely. Both of them also rushed for the door.

The small swarm got closer, and it changed course to head directly for the group of people gathered on the roof. The shapes were now big enough for Harper to distinguish individual creatures. They only superficially resembled mosquitoes, but they were much larger. They had thin, membraneous wings and tiny claws, as well as vicious-looking stingers in their tails. Thankfully, there were only eight of them.

Feaster barely pushed his way through the door before anyone else, followed close behind by Wesson. Smith got stuck behind his comrades.
OOC,Crew and Harper, roll Sanity. Sanity loss is 0/1d8, so if you make your Sanity roll you lose nothing, but if you fail, you lose 1d8. If you lose 5 or more Sanity points, roll Idea. You want to fail this roll, because if you succeed, then you'll go temporarily insane. As long as you don't go temporarily insane, you may act freely. There are five combat rounds before the swarm arrives, and we'll handle all of them before the next major update. If you want to fire at the mosqutos, you can, but remember that there is -20 to hit due to their small size. If you hit, roll damage, but do not roll hit location. After the fifth round, anyone remaining outside will be attacked by any surviving creatures. It will be difficult to get through the door with the cluster of people on both sides. Only two people can attempt to get through per combat round. In the first round, you will need to roll DEX x 5, but panic will swiftly set in. In the second round, you will need to roll DEX x 4. In the third round, you will need to roll DEX x 3. In the fourth round, you will need to roll DEX x 2, and in the fifth round, you will need to roll DEX x 1. Those with higher DEX get to try first. The two fastest people got through in the first round, and the next fastest failed in the second - he'll try again in round 3. Harper has DEX 12, so he gets to try starting in round 2, when he has to roll DEX x 4. He may fire a shot (or a burst of 3 bullets - the +20 you get basically cancels out the -20 penalty, and if it hits, roll 1d3 to see how many bullets in the burst actually hit the target) in the first round if he wishes while he waits to get through, and may fire additional shots if he wants to allow others to go first. Kowalski has DEX 11, and Crew has DEX 9, which means Crew won't be able to try to get through the door until the third round at the earliest. He may also shoot during rounds when he is not trying to get inside.
In the stairwell-
Amanda pressed herself against the wall on the landing at the top of the stairs as the men started hurrying inside. Neither she nor anyone with her could see what the fuss was all about, but these guys looked terrified.

"You don't think it's those mosquito-things Michael told us about, do you?" asked Beth.

"I hope not," said Robert. "Everyone back downstairs!" He took Beth by the hand and hustled her down.
OOC,Nobody on the stairs can see the mosquitos - yet.
In the operating theater-
Lt. Oscar Gomez didn't hear Captain Kelleher calling for another crash cart with all of the hustle and bustle, but Tom Wu did. "Screw the back boards!" he said, dropping them. He grabbed hold of a crash cart and wheeled it back to the intake area while Lt. Gomez followed him with the dialysis machine.

In the intake area-
"Understood," replied Carmichael. "Carmichael out."

Gomez and Wu burst in through the double doors with their machines, which kept swinging behind them. Wu wheeled the cart over to the second man who had flatlined with Gomez. Meanwhile, Sara Evans and Barbara Ellison worked feverishly trying to save the first man with the crash cart they already had.

"Clear!" cried Lt. Evans, pressing the paddles to the man's chest. The body jolted briefly, but lay still. "Give me more power! 300 Joules!" Barbara turned up a dial, and Sara tried again after shouting "Clear!" once more, also with no success.

Captain Johansen was focused on the driver and saw nothing else, not even her heart monitor. She lay absolutely still now. He had no idea how to treat her for the poisoning she was obviously suffering from, as it was like nothing he had ever seen before.
Captain Claire Kelleher,Claire noticed as she tried to maintain order that the driver's heart monitor had just gone flat.
OOC,Captain Johansen's roll was a Spot Hidden roll, not a Listen roll. He is treating the driver already. With everything going on, Captain Kelleher probably didn't notice, but the driver is female.
At the padded cells-
"Wonder what's going on back there?" said Catherine. "It sounds crazy. I think I can hear someone flatlining."

"At least it's not us," said Gary.

Sergeant Valdez saw Gomez and Wu come in with a crash cart and dialysis machine. It seemed that one or more of the wounded from the humvee were dying; or at least seemed to be.

She remembered what Captain Kelleher had said about the infected and their hostility once they came back to something resembling consciousness.

I'd better be ready, she thought.

She readied her Beretta, making sure its safety was off and approached the operating theatre.
Mr. Handy,I'd like for Sergeant Valdez to ready her team as well, but I don't know if they're present and otherwise unoccupied.

In the padded cell -
"If you hear someone flatlining, you best get ready for hell to break loose." Frank said. "You have to listen to what I said: You need to shoot the zombies in the head when they raise up. It's the only way to stop them. Anyone that dies, regardless of how they die, will need to have a bullet in their head before they rise up again. Understoon?"
OOC: How is Frank feeling?

At the stairwells-
Keith was startled by the sudden influx of soldiers. He grabbed Melinda and Amanda's arms and pulled them down the stairs towards the landing. "Come one, we've got to move down here."

Crew was surprised by the sight before him. As he stared he suddenly felt as if his mind was burdened. He felt whatever he was thinking could be put on hold so he could deal with the situation at hand.

Crew took a knee and motioned towards the door with his left hand. "Get down there quick!"
Crew then took aim down his L1A1 at what he figured was the closest creature. He held his breath and squeesed the trigger. He saw that he hit the creature but knew that his shot hadn't been the best.

Noticing the driver also flatlining Captain Kelleher had to make a hard decision "Get the crash cart to the driver, she has more of a chance. The poison is too far advanced in this one." she says to Wu shaking her head. "Johansen! Prep her quickly" She calls across as she begins charging the paddles on the way over.

OOC,Sergeant Jessica Valdez, the only member of your team present in the intake area is Airman Winters. Airman Kowalski and Airman Basic Feaster are up on the roof with Crew, but you don't know what they're doing at the moment. You can give orders to your team as you see fit. Sergeant Major Raymond Crew, you don't need to redo the rolls, and you're doing fine. The first one misses, and the second one hits and does enough damage to kill one of the mosquitos, leaving seven. You have three rounds remaining, but you might want to wait to see what Harper is able to do before committing to actions for those rounds. You don't go temporarily insane, but you will be indefinitely insane because you lost 20% of your Sanity in less than an hour of game time (all at once, in this case). You may act freely now, but later on you'll develop a long-term mental problem - if you survive. It would work better if from now on you put the penalty on your effective skill in the Note field rather than adjust the roll itself. This makes it easier to check for an impale. If you get 1/5 of your effective skill or less on a roll, then you roll double the damage (4d6+8 instead of 2d6+4).
Sergeant Major Raymond Crew,Don't forget that you have a +5 to your effective skill in your secrets. This means that for you the penalty is reduced to -15. You'll hit on a roll of 60 or less and impale on a roll of 12 or less.
Frank Hodges,Frank feels like hell warmed over. He's been feeling that way, but it's a little worse now. He doesn't quite have one foot in the grave yet, but he's getting there.

On the roof-
Harper darted through the door, squeezing past Smith effortlessly. Smith stumbled and still couldn't get through, as he and Kowalski got in each other's way. Crew and Harper had each slain one of the bugs, but six remained and they were getting dangerously close. Smith still couldn't quite manage to get through the crowd, but Kowalkski finally made it. Smith ended up trapped on the roof.
OOC,No, you did it right. That's even a critical success, but please do log on to Invisible Castle when you roll so you can put text in the Note section stating what the roll is for and what number you need to get. Crew, you've fired three shots, and you have two rounds remaining. You can go ahead and shoot on round 4, and then take your action for your fifth and final round. If you shoot on round five, you will be unable to try to Dodge the insects when they attack. You may also attempt to get through the door on the last round, but your chance is only DEX x 1, or 9%. If that fails, however, you'll still get a chance to Dodge each attack that would otherwise hit you. Once you've posted your actions and rolls, I'll be able to do a major update.

OOC,Ryansommer, you can't start running a fifth character while Hodges lives, and he may have quite a while yet. You might not plan to have him do anything, but he may still get the chance. You may reserve someone who's available that you're interested in, or you can create a new character in Omaha. You might also want to wait for Chapter 6 before choosing a replacement. Raymond Crew, you can get off the roof on Round 4 - but not through the door. Kowalski and Smith both spent the round trying to get through, and only two can try per round. Since Kowalski made it through on that round, there's now room for you on Round 5. You can climb down the fire escape instead, or if you're really desperate jump off the roof, but you'll still be outside and vulnerable to the bugs.

"Head downstairs" Keith said to the ladies as he turned to face Harper.

Standing tall in the face of Harpers raised rifle: "What?! Are you going to shoot me.....again?! I was just offereing help to make sure no one else loses their lives. If you were smart you'd take the help." Motioning with his arm in a sweeping motion to the downstairs where the civillians are, Keith continues: "We've faced more of those zombies and bugs, and lost more friends and family today at the truck stop than any of you could imagine. A truck stop, I might add, that was protected by a group of soldiers just like you. Who made it out of that hell hole alive? We did! The Civillians. How did we make it out of ther alive? By working as a team! So when you and your fellow 'soldiers' get eaten alive because you're so married to your 'orders' and won't take a helping hand when it's offered, we civillians will be here to but your asses back down."

Infuriated, Keith turns and heads down stairs.

Mr Handy,I got a question and I hate to be THAT GUY that questions the GM but its not ment like that, its an honest question on the order of the dex stuff. Is it considered that Smith failed before me or we failed at the same time? Because if he failed before me shouldn't I have a free ride down the stairs because there is no one to conflict for that 2nd spot. I'm not trying to sound like a douche or disrupt your game sorry if I come off like that.

Sergeant Major Raymond Crew,No, that's okay, feel free to ask questions. That's why I'm here. DEX order determined who got to the door first. DEX indirectly determines who gets through, as it reflects your ability to push through a mad rush of panicking people trying to get through a tight doorway fast, hence the rolls. Everyone else had higher DEX, and you also ordered the others to go before you, so they got to try first. Only two people can attempt to get through the door each round, but that doesn't guarantee they'll make it. Smith and Kowalski tried in Round 4, so you didn't even have a chance then and might as well have fired another shot. If you want, I can count that first roll as a Rifle shot, which would hit. In that case, you should go ahead and roll damage to see if you killed another bug. In Round 5, Kowalski was already through the door, so you and Smith both tried to get through, and both of you failed. You're not just trying to get past each other, there's also a crowd of people on the inside who have already made it through, as well as people who have just reached the top of the stairs from below. It's very tight there and not at all simple to get inside. Technically Smith tried and failed to get through before you, but he and all of those people on the inside were still obstacles. Even if only one person had tried to get through on a given round, a DEX roll still would have been required. You should also give me three Dodge rolls in advance, just in case you get hit by the bugs next round. I'll use them in order, so if you only get hit once, I'll only count the first roll and ignore the other two. I don't have time tonight, but I should be able to update Gold tomorrow night.

Handy,Two questions. First Can Harper fire at any of the bugs from his position without hitting people? And second, Who is the highest ranked military person in the stairway at this point?

Re: IC-GOLD-Triage(Everyone)

Posted: Thu Apr 29, 2010 4:35 am
by Mr. Handy
Airman Sebastian Harper,Harper can't fire at the bugs right now, as he currently can't see them. That is about to change, and there will be instructions when it does. And yes, you will risk hitting a friendly if you fire this round (probably whoever the bug you're targeting is attacking). The highest ranking person near you is Sergeant Major Crew. Technically, he's not on the stairs yet; he's just outside the door and trying to get through. After him, there are a few airmen including you, all of the same rank, except for Feaster who is outranked by everyone. Remember that you are part of Senior AIrman Sam Wright's team, and you can communicate with him over the radio.
On the roof-
Crew's parting shot slew another of the creatures. He and Airman Smith both tried and failed to get through the mad press of terrified people, but they were still just outside the door when the remaining five mosquitos arrived. They flew in a V formation, with one in front and two on each wing, and they came in like a squadron of dive bombers. Small dive bombers, to be sure, but no less deadly. Only one broke off and went after Crew; the rest descended on the hapless Smith. The evil insect came within a hair's breadth of stinging Crew, but it missed him by inches. Smith's luck miraculously held, the bugs buzzing all around him but failing to strike home with their glistening stingers.
OOC,We're now in individual combat rounds, one per major update. Crew, If you attack a mosquito, you will still be on the roof and thus open to counterattack - and you will be unable to Dodge. You may instead now get through the door. The crowd has thinned out somewhat by now as people have moved down the stairs, so you don't need to roll to get inside, and neither does Smith. You do, however, need to roll Luck if this is your course of action, to see if you can slam the door shut behind you before any of the bugs get in with you!
On the stairwell-
"Let's go!" cried Amanda. She took Lisa's and Melinda's hands and rushed down the stairs, followed by Keith. They reached the landing of the upper floor before they heard the ominous buzzing from above. Robert and Beth were already there.

"Keep running!" shouted Beth.

Harper, Feaster, Kowalski, and Wesson were at the top of the stairs, and they could now see the mosquito-like things attacking their comrades. "Sarge!" shouted Wesson. "Get inside, quick!"

Just then, a burst of automatic gunfire came from somewhere below.
OOC,Harper, you may fire at one of the mosquitos. The range is point blank, so there is no risk of hititng Crew with a single shot. Roll to hit anyway even though your effective skill is 100% (when you include the -20 penalty after doubling your skill) - a Malfunction will cause your weapon to jam, and a roll of 20 or less will be an impale. If you fire a burst of 3 bullets, your effective skill goes up to 120%, but you'll have to roll 1d3 to see how many of them hit. If you don't hit with all 3, then you must roll Luck to make sure you don't hit the wrong person.
In the intake area-
Airman Winters readied his M-16 and flicked the safety off, watching the bodies carefully. Captain Johansen opened up the driver's Racal suit - at this point breaching the suit was the least of her worries - and then ripped open her uniform's top. Captain Kelleher and Lt. Gomez raced over with the crash cart. They applied the paddles to the driver's chest once, but there was no response.

"It's no good," said Lt. Evans, shaking her head at the failed effort to revive the man she was treating. She looked at her watch. "I'm calling it. Time of death is 3:32 PM."

Suddenly, the man sat up. "Look, he's-" started Zorie, then stopped when she saw his red, malevolent eyes. Reacting calmly, she backed away towards the operating theater doors.

Then the other dead man got up, his eyes equally crimson. The two of them stood and staggered after the nearest living humans.

Lt. Doolittle went utterly pale, her mind on the brink. She raised her MP-5 and sprayed death at the second zombie, the one with nobody around it. All but one of her bullets hit it, and it fell, riddled with holes.
OOC,Everyone in the intake area, roll Sanity for seeing the zombies. Sanity loss is 0/1d10. If you do not go insane, you may act freely. I'll roll for the other NPCs in my next major update. If you wish to shoot at the remaining zombie, you risk hitting Lt. Evans or Lt. Ellison. You are at point blank range, so your skill is doubled, but if you miss, you must roll Luck to avoid hitting the wrong person. If you fire a burst, you will have to roll Luck even if you hit, unless you hit with every bullet in the burst. There is no time to aim for the head before the zombie attacks, so you will need to roll 1d20 for a random hit location for each bullet that hits. If you wish to attack hand-to-hand, you may target the head. If you do this, reduce your chance to hit by 5 percentiles. However, in rushing into melee you will put yourself in the line of fire as well.
At the padded cells-
"We certainly know that by now," said Gary.

"Damn," said Catherine when the gunfire echoed down the hall. "I always miss all the fun."

Although the sight of the infected was unnerving, Sergeant Valdez kept her cool.

One of the infected had apparently been taken care of already, which left just the one.

Not wanting to lose any more people to whatever was going on here, Valdez decided to take a risk and drag Lt. Evans and Lt. Ellison out of the line of sight. The infected didn't seem to be able to move that quickly.

Valdez made a grab for the nearest person, as she shouted: "Winters! I don't want to lose any more people, either through infection or blue on blue incidents. We need to get Lt. Evans and Ellison out of harm's way, then we'll deal with the hostile. I'll take one, you take the other!"

OOC,If Invisible Castle really wanted you dead, it would have killed you last round. Just be glad that you weren't around when the meteorite opened. You don't want to know how many of these things are inside one of those. Seven characters back in Chapter 1 had the misfortune to check out a meteorite. Only one of them survived the ensuing horror... Captain Claire Kelleher, that's not an automatic thing. That's a hand-to-hand attack, so you'll need to make a Fist/Punch roll to see if your paddles connect. The base skill is 50%, but if you're specifically targeting the head, there's a -5 penalty, so the overall chance is 45%.

Captain Johansen isn't evenphased by the zombies. He pulls out his handgun and fires, striking a zombie in the left leg and causing some damage, and fires again. This bullet strikes the zombie in the head and killing it outright.

OOC,We may anyway. Both of those shots are impales. I'll treat those first 2d10 as the damage from the first bullet, which hits a leg and doesn't do much. Now you can roll 2d10 for the second bullet, which hits it in the head.

On the stairwell-
Harper shot one of the mosquitos and badly wounded it, but the hideous thing didn't fall. Smith barreled into the stairwell behind Crew and slammed the door, but not before the wounded mosquito slipped inside. Wesson plugged it with his M-24, blowing the damaged creature to bits. Then Kowalski locked the door.

Further down, Beth, Robert, Amanda, Keith, Melinda, and Lisa reached the landing on the floor above the ground floor.

Outside the clinic-
Sam Wright turned and looked inside when he heard the gunfire within the clinic, as did Darrow and Raffin. By the time they heard the buzzing sound behind them, it was too late. Wright dropped his jaw in shock, his mind fried, but he was beyond thought at this point. Airman Phyllis Darrow was also taken aback, terror seizing her heart as she realized she was about to die. She turned and ran across the parking lot. Airman Basic Ken Raffin shrank back in horror, unable to cope. He lost all reason, turning his rifle on himself and fired. One round struck him in the thigh, causing him to fall and pass out.

Two of the mosquitos dove for Sam Wright, while one pursued each of the others. One of the ones attacking Sam came right for him, and he nimbly leapt aside. "Help!" he cried into his radio. "The bugs are at the front door!"

The mosquito chasing Darrow easily kept up with her and very nearly stung her. The other one missed Raffin as he fell.

In the intake area-
David winced, only narrowly holding onto his marbles. Coltrane had just seen one too many of these things, but he was getting used to them enough that it didn't affect him so badly this time. Lt. Sara Evans remained her usual calm self, and Lt. Oscar Gomez was also all right. Lt. Barbara Ellison kept her cool as well. Senior Airman Tom Wu went just a little bit loopier. Winters shuddered, but only a little. Everyone drew their weapons.

Then the driver sat straight up and lunged for Captain Johansen with alarming speed, her malevolent red eyes wide open.
OOC,No need to roll Sanity again for this zombie, as I'm considering it part of the same group as the other two. Everyone in the intake area who chooses to do so may fire once with whichever gun he or she has ready before the zombie attacks. Additional shots and hand-to-hand attacks will have to wait until after the zombie attacks. Again, there is no time to aim for the head, and you must roll Luck if any bullets miss. The range is point blank. Captain Johansen, if you fire, you may not also try to Dodge. The mosquitos are not visible from here, but they will be if you go outside. In that case, you'll need to roll Sanity, with a Sanity loss of 0/1d8. Moving will take up your entire turn.
At the padded cells-
"Jeez!" said Gary when the report came in on the radio.

"Stay frosty," said Catherine.

Crew breathed a sigh of relief. He knew that he needed to find the other people in the building and secure them. He looked around and it seemed that everyone was ok even if they were a bit shaken up.

"We need to secure all the personnel in this building guys.

Smith stay here and watch the door, if they start to break through come and alert the rest of us.

Kowalski and Wesson, find the med staff and make sure they are secure with these civilians.

Harper, me and you will head to the front entrance and lock it up, we will then rendezvous with the medical staff and make a plan from there. Remember guys those bugs arn't like enemies we have been trained to plan for, so the plan will most likely change as we go."

He took a deep breath and nodded for them to get after it.

On the stairwell-
"Yes, Sergeant Major," said Smith, taking up his post inside the door and aiming his sniper rifle at it. Kowalski and Wesson headed down the stairs, along with Crew and Harper, as the main entrance was also on the ground floor. They soon reached the next landing, partway down.

"What about me?" asked Feaster. He shrugged. "Guess I'm supposed to stay here."

Further below, the civilians all reached the ground floor. The stairs continued down to the basement, and a door led out of the stairwell back into the women's isolation ward.

Outside the clinic-
Sam Wright brought up the barrel of his MP-5 and sprayed lead at the two mosquitos attacking him. Both of them were caught in the line of fire. One was hit by ten rounds and sliced to ribbons, and the other took six bullets. It too was destroyed beyond recognition.

Darrow ran screaming away from the clinic, soon crossing the edge of the parking lot. The mosquito kept after her, but it could not drive its stinger home. Raffin lay helpless as the other mosquito pierced his back.

In the intake area-
Lt. Doolittle shot the reanimated driver with a single bullet from her MP-5, putting another large hole in its chest. Lt. Ellison drilled it, severing the left arm at the shoulder. Lt. Evans only barely hit, creasing its stomach badly. Senior Airman Coltrane raised his M-16 and put a round in the creature, shooting it in the middle of its torso and snapping its spine. The driver fell back onto the gurney, unmoving.

At the padded cells-
"I hope so," said Catherine.

"I wouldn't bet on it," said Gary.

On the stairwell-
The other civilians followed Keith and Melinda down the stairs and into the basement. The lights were on down here, so it was still possible to see. The stairwell came to an end here, and a door in the north wall led out into the basement hallway.

Further up, Crew and Harper reached the landing one floor above ground level, with Wesson and Kowalski right behind them. Feaster lagged behind by about a flight, but he hurried after them.

At the top of the stairs, Smith nervously kept his M-24 trained on the door. Not a sound could be heard on the other side.

Outside the clinic-
Sam switched his MP-5's fire selector to single shot mode, not wanting to risk hitting Raffin with a stray bullet. He put a bullet into the mosquito that had just stung the poor man, just winging it. The evil insect buzzed angrily and flew straight for Sam Wright, driving its stinger through his Racal suit and into his flesh. It shattered his left thighbone with a powerful impact, practically running him through with the giant stinger. He keeled over, his head swimming as it suddenly felt light. He tried to raise his MP-5 to fire another shot, but everything went black...

Airman Phyllis Darrow fled west, passing beyond the edge of the parking lot and down the road. The mosquito chasing her dived in, but she managed to avoid it as she ran screaming into the distance.

In the intake area-
"Oh, man," muttered Lt. Doolittle. Now that the battle inside was over, she started to feel weary as the adrenalin wore off. Yet there was still the echo of gunfire from outside, as well as an odd droning sound and distant screaming. What was going on out there?

Lt. Sara Evans lowered her pistol and looked around at the fresh carnage. She turned to Captain Kelleher. "What are your orders, ma'am?" she asked.

At the padded cells-
"Are we just supposed to stand here?" asked Catherine. "Can't you hear that shooting? Our friends are in danger!"
Colin Lewis,Colin looked around the padded cell, but it was designed to be as harmless as possible, and his captors had made sure to put no potential weapons inside - except the gurney itself. There were metal bars along the sides, and he was strong enough to possibly pull one off and use it as a club or a lever.
Colin, if you want to try to pull one of the bars free, roll STR x 3.
OOC,The front doors have already been destroyed by earlier zombie break-ins. There are a few gurneys that were used as makeshift barricades, but they were knocked down by zombies too. The barricades might be rebuilt, but they wouldn't keep out something as small as the mosquito-like creatures.

"We appear to have bugs incoming. These are dangerous beasties. One sting and you are infected, if these last casualties are anything to go by that gives you around half an hour to live. In the basement hall-
The door opened when Keith tried it, and everyone followed him through into the hall beyond. It was lined with several doors on either side, and there was an intersection ahead in the distance with another corridor. At the far end, a metal door was visible. Melinda looked around, but both the stairwell and the hallway were bare. Nothing had been left lying around.

In the stairwell-
Crew, Harper, Wesson, and Kowalski reached the ground floor landing. The stairs continued down to the basement, and a door led to the women's isolation ward. Above them, Feaster passed the landing on the floor above on his way down.

Outside the clinic-
Phyllis Darrow fled unthinkingly down the road, though she was unable to outpace the vicious insect pursuing her. It made another weak attempt to sting her.

In the intake area-
At Captain Kelleher's order, everyone fled through the swinging double doors and into the OR. The shooting had stopped, and the buzzing from outside was getting louder...

In the operating theater-
Once everyone was through the doors, Zorie grabbed an IV drip stand and slid it through the handles to keep them secure, but that wouldn't hold them long. Two circular glass windows, one in each door, provided a view of the now deserted intake area. Except it wasn't completely deserted - the buzzing was now inside! The only other exits from the operating theater were more double doors to the left and right that led to the men's and women's wards, respectively.

"Captain," replied Carmichael, "please try to remain calm. You're the last person I expected this nonsense from about the dead rising. We have had other reports of some sort of insects coming from that meteorite and attacking people, and their sting appears to be the vector for the infection. If these things were falling all over the world, that would explain how it spread so fast. The incubation period from a sting also appears to be less than half an hour - a lot less. Has anyone on your end been stung? All of our remaining flamethrowers are currently being used trying to contain the mess in the southeast portion of the base, along with all available personnel. We don't have all that many at this point, as our losses have been mounting all day. As soon as they have things over there under control, we'll send whoever's available your way. In the meantime, you're going to have to hold out with the forces that came with you."

At the padded cells-
"That commotion is sounding awfully close," said Gary, glancing over his shoulder towards the men's ward.
Colin Lewis,Colin, you may try another STR x 3 roll.

"Get some of that machinery over here and get these doors barricaded properly. Make sure the windows are covered by something heavy. That's a weak spot." Captain Kelleher shouts to the room. Reopening the channel to HQ she says "I am calm sir. No stings here but there may be in other parts of the building I'm not in a position to go and find out right now. It is not nonsense about the dead rising sir. I just watched it happen. I still think the mechanism is some type of parasitism. It has been observed in certain parasitic wasps that their venom can remove free will from their hosts. Could this be something similar?"

In the padded cell -
"It sounds like things are getting bad out there" Frank said to those outside. "You could use these cells as a last fall back position. I would be happy to volunteer to hold the front line while everyone reaches safety. I've got nothing to lose. In fact, strap a few claymores to me and send me out there. I'll take all of those mother fuckers out."

In the basement-
Keith closed the door behind him. "Quickly. Let's search these rooms." He approached the nearest door and looked for a window to look in.

OOC: To speed things up, Keith will listen at the door if there are no windows on them.

In the basement hall-
Keith tried the door, but it was locked. Robert, Beth, and Lisa tried other doors in the hall leading up to the intersection, but they were locked as well. Soon the group reached the junction. The corridor leading left and right was lined with similar doors. The only door that looked different was the metal door at the far end of the hall straight ahead.

On the road-
Darrow continued to evade the mosquito as it chased her.

In the operating theater-
"Yes, it could be a parasite, Captain," replied Carmichael over the radio. "We'll know more once things settle down and you have a chance to dissect the remains."

Zorie Spooner pulled a muscle trying to shift a heavy machine. Lt. Doolittle shoved one of the operating tables up against the doors to the intake area, while Lt. Ellison and Lt. Evans snatched up the only fire extinguishers in the room. Lt. Gomez pushed a large surgical apparatus up to the doors. David lifted up a large machine and placed it on top of the table, blocking off one of the windows, but the other was still exposed. A thump came from that other window, but it didn't break.

"Winters, Coltrane, Wu, cover the doors!" ordered Sergeant Valdez. All four of them took up positions and raised their weapons.
OOC,Anyone in this room may roll STR x 5 to try to finish the barricade and block the second window, but there is only room for one more piece on the barricade, so only one success will matter.
In the stairwell-
Harper, Wesson, and Kowalski followed Crew into the women's ward.

In the women's isolation ward-
Crew led the way into the women's isolation ward. He could hear the flurry of activity coming from the operating theater straight ahead, behind a pair of swinging double doors.

At the padded cells-
"We don't have any Claymores," said Catherine, "but we need all the help we can get. You know what? Screw it, let's go!" She unlocked Frank's cell and ran down the hall towards the sound of action.

"Wait, what about Lewis?" asked Gary.

"The big guy's had enough sedatives to knock out an elephant. He's not going anywhere!"

Shrugging, Gary followed Catherine around the corner and into the men's ward.
Colin Lewis,You may try again to pry off a metal bar from the gurney at STR x 3, or you may attempt to force the door open with your bare hands by rolling on the Resistance Table: your STR against the door's STR of 20. This gives you a 30% chance.

Downstairs-
Keith moved to the metal door at the end of the hallway and attempted to open it. (OOC: He looks into any windows in the door if there are any)

In the basement hall-
Keith tried the handle of the windowless metal door at the end of the hall, but it too was locked. So were all of the regular doors lining the hall leading up to it, as his companions discovered.

On the road-
The mosquito finally homed in on Phyllis Darrow, and she was too slow to avoid it. The stinger pierced her lower back slightly, but it was enough. She collapsed to the asphalt and lay still.

In the women's isolation ward-
Crew led everyone back into the operating theater.

In the men's isolation ward-
"I'll go do it," said Gary Simpson. "I know you don't want to miss all the excitement. Give me the keys. I'd better unstrap him too."

"Okay, go," said Catherine, tossing him the keys. "Come on," she said to Frank Hodges, heading into the operating theater.

Gary Simpson caught the keys and doubled back to the padded cells.

In the operating theater-
"I'll be fine, ma'am," said Zorie. "Just need to rest for a few minutes."

"I don't know if we'll get them!" said Lt. Doolittle, lifting the heart monitor and adding it to the barricade, blocking off the second window - and just in time! Everyone could hear the sound of glass breaking on the other side.

"Will that hold?" asked Lt. Evans.

"Maybe, but for how long?" said Sergeant Valdez.

Catherine Rourke burst in from the north, while Crew, Harper, Wesson, and Kowalski entered from the south.

At the padded cells-
Gary unlocked the door to Colin's cell and was shocked to discover him not only awake, but also free of the gurney and standing near the door! "What the-" he started, reaching for his baton extremely quickly.
OOC,Colin Lewis, since you and Gary Simpson both have DEX 13, you'll need to roll 1d100 for initiative to see who goes first. If you get less than a 4, you get to go first. In the basement hall-
"I'm sure we could force any of these doors open," said Robert, "except maybe the metal one, that is. The question is, do we want to? What would we gain from it? We have no idea what's in any of these rooms, though I'd guess they're used for storage. If you want to hole up in one of these rooms, any door that's weak enough to be forced open by us wouldn't hold long against the dead."

"You're right," said Beth. "We need to be somewhere there's another exit, anyway, in case we have to retreat again. If there's only one way in, there's only one way out."
OOC,If either of you wants to force open a random door, only two people can combine their STR scores in the effort for any one door. Any of the NPCs with you in the basement would be willing to help you in the effort. To do this, you'll need to make a STR vs. STR roll on the Resistance Table. The two people trying to break open the door add their STR scores together, and a single roll is made. The normal doors have a STR of 20, and the metal door has a STR of 40.
At the padded cells-
Colin was slow to react, and Gary Simpson smacked him with his baton extremely hard across the temple. The big man was felled by the single blow. "That takes care of that," said Gary.

In the operating theater-
"Everyone move away from the doors!" cried Lt. Doolittle, retreating from the doors to the intake area. The others in the room quickly followed suit.

"Ma'am, if we have to fall back, the padded cells are secure," said Catherine Rourke. "The only problem is we could get trapped in there."

Suddenly, there was a light thump on one of the doors, near the bottom. The doors held just fine. A few seconds later, the heart monitor blocking the broken window was shoved aside, landing on the floor with a loud smash. The mosquito-like creature on the other side flew through the shattered window with its small claws outstretched. There was malice in its compound eyes as it quickly surveyed the room full of people. One of its wings had a hole in it, but it was still capable of flight.
OOC,Everyone in the operating theater, roll Sanity. Sanity loss is 0/1d8. Crew and Harper do not need to roll, as they have already seen this creature. If you do not go temporarily insane and you have a gun ready, you may fire one shot before the mosquito gets to attack someone. Range is normal, and there is also a -20 penalty to hit due to the creature's small size. If you fire, you will not be able to Dodge should the mosquito survive and decide to attack you.

In the cells-
Frank headed down to the end of the hallways and exited the doors. He inspected the scene around him.

In the basement-
"We need to find an exit" Keith said. He moved to the metal door: "Someone help me force this open." With the help of Robert, Keith tried to force the door, but could not make it budge. "Shit!" he exclaimed.

Captain Johansen backs far away from the doors, still holding his pump. Was anyone left outside? Cause if they were, it's fairly certain we'll be facing zombies soon as well as these mosquito things.

In the basement hall-
"It's no good," said Robert, grunting. "We'll never force open that metal door."

"I wouldn't expect to find any exits down here," said Beth. "We're underground. There were fire exits on every floor in the stairwell, though. Maybe we should head back up."

At the padded cells-
Gary Simpson walked around the corner with Frank Hodges, attaching his baton to his belt again and unslinging his M-16.
Colin Lewis,You're down for eight turns, including the current one.
In the men's isolation ward-
Frank and Gary entered the men's isolation ward. They saw the gathered people in the operating theater through the windows in the double doors at the end of the hall, but they couldn't make out much detail without getting closer. They did hear a single gunshot and screaming. Then Tom Wu burst in from the OR, a terrified expression on his face, followed by David, Zorie, the nurses, Catherine, Sergeant Valdez, and Airman Winters.

In the operating theater-
David cried out, completely overwhelmed by the sight of the deadly alien creature, but his mind was too shattered to process what it meant. Zorie screamed, a bit shaken by how close she had come to death. Both of them retreated into the men's ward, heading for the padded cells. Lt. Doolittle reeled, shaken to the core. The very existence of such a thing caused her to melt down, and she immediately fainted. Coltrane was startled, and what little of his wits remained deserted him. He knew just enough to realize that he was done for, and he stood motionless.

Even the normally calm Lt. Evans shrieked with terror, on the very brink of panic, but she couldn't think straight enough to jump off of it. Lt. Gomez didn't even flinch. Lt. Ellison shuddered, but not for long. All three of them fell back into the men's ward.

"No!" cried Tom Wu, his fears once again rising and getting the better of him. He saw his doom and ran like a scared rabbit, into the men's ward. Catherine Rourke lost her cool, but not completely. "Ma'am, the padded cells won't hold all of us," she said as she retreated. "They also have windows. They're reinforced, but they won't hold forever. Neither will the doors."

Sergeant Valdez remained steady. "Senior Airman Wright and most of his team were outside!" she said. She spoke into her radio. "Wright, do you read? Over." There was no response. "Fall back, Winters!" Winters nodded and calmly followed her into the men's ward.

"I'll go get Smith," said Wesson, dashing back into the women's ward.

Only Captain Kelleher, Captain Johansen, Sergeant Major Crew, Airman Harper, Airman Kowalski, Airman Basic Feaster Lt. Doolittle, and Airman Coltrane remained in the room. Another blow rocked the doors and knocked them loose from their hinges, but the barricade held. Then another one struck the barricade, but it only partially collapsed. It would fall within seconds, however.

At the padded cells -
"Simpson, let me have that M-16 and a grenade. I've going to hold them off while you help everyone get to safety. When things get bad, I'm going to pull the pin on the grenade and take as many of them with me as I can." Frank said. "I'm as good as dead already. I can feel the infection in me. I want my last action to be helping everyone else here."

In the basement-
"We need to find weapons" Keith said. "I was hoping there may be some down here."

The plan made sense and Gary knew it. He was convinced it was the best thing to do.

Crew looked at the area.

"Lets quickly get everyone into the mens ward, we will defend that door and fall back even further if we have to. Im guessing these things arnt smart so I figure if we put enough fire down range they wont think to take cover and be shredded."

"EVERYONE UNARMED FALL BACK INTO THE MENS WARD!" he shouted as he leveled his rife at the door preparing to fire as soon as the door fell.

In the basement hall-
"This is a hospital," said Amanda, "not an armory. We might find medical supplies stored down here in some of these rooms, but I wouldn't count on weapons. Even if there are any, we'd have no idea where to find them."

"Maybe we should head back upstairs before we get trapped down here," suggested Lisa.

"We won't actually be able to get outside if we go up there," said Robert. "The exits are locked, remember? We'd need someone who works at the clinic to let us out. Even then, we don't know if there are any of those mosquito-things flying around out there. Still, we'd be able to move around better upstairs. Down here is a dead end."

"Remember what Michael said about the mosquitos," said Beth. "He found all those dead ones near Brownson. It sounds like they can't survive very long. We just need to hole up somewhere safe until they die."

In the operating theater-
"Everyone in here is armed, Sergeant Major," said Harper, "but a couple of them look out of it." He tried to lift Lt. Rebecca Doolittle, but she was too big for him to manage alone. Kowalski helped him, and the two of them were able to carry her into the men's ward after the doctors, with Feaster bringing up the rear. This left only Crew and the motionless Coltrane in the OR.

Then an orange suited zombie smashed the barricade to bits and crawled over its remains. It was barely recognizable as Airman Basic Ken Raffin, his red eyes glowing behind his shattered clear faceplate. He had a severe bullet wound in the thigh and a lighter wound in his back. Immediately behind him came Senior Airman Sam Wright, also undead. His leg had been broken and was at an odd angle, so he too was forced to crawl. And past them, coming from the intake area, there was an ominous buzzing...
OOC,Raymond Crew, roll Sanity. Sanity loss is 0/1d10. If you lose 5 or more Sanity, you must roll Idea. If you fail this roll, you may still act freely, but if you succeed, you will go temporarily insane. If you don't go insane, you have one combat round before the zombies get to attack you. You may fire at one of them, and the range is point blank, but there is no time to aim for the head, so you'll need to roll a random hit location. Hand-to-hand combat is also an option, and in that case you may target the head by taking a -5 penalty to hit. If you flee the room, you won't need to roll anything if you abandon Coltrane. If you want to try to drag him with you, you must make a roll on the Resistance Table pitting your STR of 15 against his SIZ of 16. This gives you a 45% chance. If you succeed, both you and he get out of the room before the zombies attack. If you fail, you both end up stuck in the room. In that case, you should roll Dodge just in case you get hit by a zombie. You cannot both Dodge and attack.
In the men's isolation ward-
"Grenades?!" said Gary Simpson. "They didn't issue us grenades, but you're welcome to my M-16." He handed the rifle to Frank Hodges and glanced back. "If you want a grenade, I think that explosives guy Harper has some. Or you might check with one of the guys you came with, see if they've got any." He turned and followed the screaming Tom Wu around the corner to the padded cells. Catherine Rourke reluctantly turned and went after them, and Zorie Spooner ran past her in a hurry, as did David. The three nurses also made their way to the padded cells. Valdez and Winters brought up the rear of their retreat.

Captain Kelleher and Captain Johansen raced into the ward from the operating theater. Then Harper and Kowalski carried in the unconscious Lt. Doolittle followed by Feaster, the doors swinging shut behind them. A loud crashing sound came from the OR.
OOC,Everyone in the men's isolation ward may roll Listen to see if you hear the buzzing. You do not need to roll Sanity, as you cannot see the zombies yet, but you will need to if you enter the operating theater.
At the padded cells-
The retreating medical staff, except for the doctors, reached the hall outside the padded cells, both of which were open. Colin Lewis lay passed out on the floor of the south cell, blissfully unaware of the danger. To the nurses' horror, they realized that there was no way the cells could hold everyone. Each cell could hold at most six people standing up. However, with Colin lying down, he took up the space of two. So did the gurney in his cell, so even if he were placed on top of it, that would still only leave room for four others in that cell.
Colin Lewis,You're out for seven turns, including this one.

In the men's ward-
"Thanks!" Frank said. "I'll hold them off while you gets everyone safe." Frank headed to the operating theater with his rifle ready. "Be safe and aim for the head" he said, looking back before leaving Gary in the Men's Ward.

In the basement hall-
Everyone followed Keith back into the stairwell.

In the stairwell-
Keith and his friends entered the stairwell, which stretched upwards ahead of them.
OOC,Keith and Melinda, roll Listen.
In the operating theater-
Crew, with a sudden surge of adrenalin, hoisted the massive Coltrane over his shoulder and rushed through the still-swinging doors into the men's ward, past Frank Hodges as he hurried into the operating theater. The instant Frank saw the zombies, he curled up into the fetal position, whimpering.

Ken Raffin crawled across the room to Frank and very nearly bit him. Then Sam Wright grabbed him and began to squeeze. As if that weren't bad enough, one of the evil alien mosquitos zoomed in from the intake area and dived on him, plunging its stinger into his hip fairly deeply. He was dimly aware that his life was fading away. He had failed to do any damage to the enemy, but at least his sacrifice had delayed them and bought the others time.
OOC,Frank, the Idea roll was alllowed, but it didn't help you. You're dying, but you're not quite dead yet. Now's the time for any final words or thoughts. No actions, though. Crew, you hadn't posted an action, so I made the decision and roll for you based on the actions you said you were considering. I won't usually do this, so please make an effort to post your actions in a timely manner. If for some reason you'll be absent, please let me know in advance.
In the men's isolation ward-
Lt. Doolittle came around thanks to the stinging blow to her cheek, and the men carrying her set her on her feet. Captain Kelleher's emulation of General George S. Patton had worked. "Sorry, ma'am," said the pilot, looking at her feet.

"Smith, start heading downstairs," said Wesson's voice on the radio. "I'm on my way up to meet you."

"Roger that," replied the other sniper.

Crew burst in, carrying the nonresponsive Coltrane. He had most likely saved the man's life, and Frank Hodges had bought them both time to get away, having paid for it with his life.

"We won't die tired, sir," said Kowalski. "I've seen those bugs move, and they're so fast they'll catch us long before we tire out."

"Move, move, move!" said Feaster, following Captain Johansen around the corner. Kowalski and Harper went with him.

At the padded cells-
Lt. Sara Evans frowned when she saw the number of people gathering outside the cells compared to the little space within them. "Sir!" she said, saluting when Captain Johansen came into view. "There's not enough room for everyone in the padded cells. Mr. Lewis is taking up a lot of room lying unconscious like that. We could revive him, but I'm not so sure that's a good idea considering his mental state."
Colin Lewis,You're out for six more turns, including this one, unless someone wakes you up sooner.

Keith Deeds,Keith heard footsteps in the stairwell above him. One set of footsteps was one floor above and moving upwards. He could also make out another far above, on its way down.
OOC,Chapter 5 is nearing its conclusion, so you might want to wait until after that to grab a character between chapters. I'm not anticipating adding many pregens for Chapter 6 at this point, however. You can of course always create a character. You already have one in Gold, so I recommend creating one in Omaha if you go that route. As for pregens, I also prefer that you take one in Omaha, as you don't have one there yet. There are plenty to choose from if you don't mind reading their backstories for Chapter 4 and most of Chapter 5. In Omaha, Erin Halloran has been abandoned and is available. John Lee may be up for grabs soon if zhirinovsky does not return (I got a PM telling me of the impeding absence, but the return date was supposed to be a few weeks ago). Both of these characters were added in Chapter 5. There are dozens available that were added in Chapter 4, too many to list here. Check the Character Sheets thread to see who's available. In addition to those with no player, Tariq al-Tikriti has been abandoned. If you really want another character in Gold, in addition to the option of creating your own, there are several available. Keep in mind that most of these characters are in deadly danger right now. Of those added in Chapter 5, Jessica Valdez, Sebastian Harper, and Marcus Winters are available. The characters added in Chapter 4 are all up for grabs except for Captain Johansen. Sword and Juno are really too small for you to have two characters in either of those sections, though if one of those groups split I'd be open to you picking one of the characters in the subgroup that doesn't contain your existing character. You could play Lara if you really want to, but she's pretty much done for Chapter 5 and some very unpleasant things are going to happen to her in Chapter 6 - not to mention her rapidly plummeting Sanity.

OOC,Yes, that's a good idea. If you want to create your character or reserve a pregen, you can do that at any time. If nothing jumps out at you, you can wait until the intermission between chapters.
In the stairwell-
Keith led the way up the stairs to the ground floor. The stairs continued upwards, and a door led north into the women's isolation ward. In the distance to the north, he could hear a chewing sound, as well as a faint buzzing noise that was receding. Above him, the two pairs of footsteps joined and began to head back down, reaching the landing on the floor above.

In the operating theater-
Sam Wright crushed the life out of Frank Hodges, and he knew no more.

In the men's isolation ward-
Crew carried Coltrane around the corner towards the padded cells, followed by a panicky Lt. Doolittle. Only Captain Kelleher remained in the ward. Then the doors to the operating theater were pushed open slightly from the other side, and a mosquito squeezed through and came right for her!
OOC,Captain Kelleher, if you choose to attack, you have time only for one shot at normal range before the mosquito gets its attack. If you choose to do something other than attack, such as running away, you should roll Dodge in case it hits you. You cannot both attack and dodge. There is no need to roll Sanity, as you've already seen one of the mosquitos in this group. I seriously recommend that you post this time. Had you posted before this update, you could have gotten around the corner before it had a chance to reach you.
At the padded cells-
David and Zorie Spooner, the only civilians in the hall, moved into the south cell. They picked up Colin Lewis and placed him gently on top of the gurney. "There's still room for two more in here!" called Zorie. "You can squeeze maybe half a dozen in the other cell!"

"Understood, Captain," Carmichael replied over the radio. "We're going to send what forces we can once they're available. I estimate it'll be about ten or fifteen minutes before they can reach you. In the meantime, you'll have to hold out for as long as possible."

"Sir, I don't know where the other civilians have gone," said Lt. Evans to Captain Johansen, "but we can fit two more in the south cell and another six in the north cell. Without Captain Kelleher here, you'll need to decide who goes in them, and we don't have much time!" As if to accentuate her point, the buzzing sound could be heard around the corner, from back in the men's ward.
Colin Lewis,You're out for five more turns, including this one.

OOC,Congratulations! :D I'm sure they can be a double handful. Thanks for letting me know that you'll be busy.
In the stairwell-
As Keith led the group upwards, footsteps started heading down. "Who's there?" called a male voice from above.

"It's just us civilians!" answered Amanda.

"All right, come on up."

The six of them reached the first landing, where they met the two snipers from the roof. "This whole situation is FUBAR," said Wesson, panic in his eyes. "Maybe we should just take the fire escape and get all of you out of here."

"Are you sure that's a good idea?" asked Smith. "There could be more of those things out there."

"There's already some in here from the sound of things," said Beth. "Maybe we should take the chance."

In the men's isolation ward-
The mosquito pursued Claire, streaking past her as she ducked around the corner. It quickly turned back and chased her.

At the padded cells-
Captain Kelleher rounded the corner, the deadly alien insect right behind her. Zorie slammed her cell door shut, and the lock automatically engaged. The north cell remained open. Gary refused to panic at the sight of the creature. Tom Wu was nowhere to be seen, as he had run away further down the hall in the confusion.
OOC,Everyone is presumed to have a weapon ready at the start of this round. If you want to shoot at the mosquito, you may fire one shot before it gets to attack. Captain Kelleher may fire at point blank range, but everyone else is at normal range. If anyone but her fires and misses, you must roll Luck to make sure you don't hit her by mistake. Captain Kelleher, if you choose to do something other than attack, you should roll Dodge again just in case.

"Airman Harper, a grenade into the doors on my mark!" Crew barked, reaching to his radio, "the rest of you put some rounds into that thing so we can move on!" signalling to the others in the room to fire upon the mosquito with the hand holding his radio, the other gripping Coltrane's collar. Crew brought the radio handset to his face, pressing the transmit button and said in load but clear tones "This is Crew speaking, everyone listen up because what you hear may save your lives. These bastards have caught us with our dicks out but running will not solve our problems, we will end up divided and alone, easy pickings for them when they come. Smith, Wesson, I want you all covering the approach to the stairs, we may need an emergency getaway. Anyone with medical experience I want near the padded cells, along with all the civillians. Everyone else, get to the OR, we're going to hold them there. Crew out." He removed his hand from the transmit button and dropped the radio, drawing his revolver and checking it's chambers before hoiking Coltrane behind him and steadying himself to fire at the bug. "Cmon you ugly fuck" he muttered "Come and get me"
Harper, just assume that once several others have fired Crew gives you a hand signal to throw the grenade through the gap in the barricade

OOC,I'm not sure if you got everything when you were catcfing up. The characters are no longer in the OR, but have retreated to the padded cells. Feaster is with you, but Smith and Wesson are back at the stairs. No zombies are currently visible, but they were in the OR the last you saw. However, there is that mosquito buzzing around and trying to sting Captain Kelleher to deal with. Most of the NPCs get their chance to fire before Crew does, so I'll roll for them now. There's no need to use Fast Talk to get anyone enlisted to do what you say, as they're required to follow your orders, but it would help to convince officers. The roll failed, but the lieutenants were willing to do as he said anyway. The captains are PCs, so what they do depends on their players.
In the stairwell-
"Roger that," Smith replied into the radio built into his suit. "We're on our way."

Wesson unlocked the fire exit. "If anyone wants out," he said, "you can use this door. Or you can follow us downstairs." The two snipers went ahead of Keith, and the others all tailed after them. "We can't really give our weapons to civilians, sorry." The group soon reached the ground floor landing again.
OOC,Keith, if you want to try to convince them to give you a pistol, roll Persuade.
At the padded cells-
Lt. Rebecca Doolittle pointed her MP-5 at the mosquito and squeezed off a shot, striking the creature and splattering it all over the wall.

Harper went with Crew back to the men's ward, followed by Kowalski and Feaster. Valdez and Winters remained behind with the nurses and orderlies, as Crew had ordered.

"Well, now we're trapped in here until they let us out," said Zorie in the south cell. "If they live long enough to let us out."

"Relax, babe," said David. "I can't think of anyone else I'd rather be stuck in here with."
OOC,Everyone, roll Listen.
Colin Lewis,You are out for three more turns, including this one.
In the men's isolation ward-
Crew and the others found the men's ward as deserted as they had left it, and no zombies were visible. The doors to the operating room remained closed. Harper held a grenade in one hand and his pistol in the other, while Kowalski and Feaster gripped their M-16s. "I don't see them, Sergeant Major," said Harper. "You want me to go chuck it through that door?"
OOC,Crew, roll Listen.

Sergeant Major Raymond Crew,Crew heard chewing sounds beyond the doors to the operating theater that suddenly stopped. Then there were dragging sounds on the other side of the doors, accompanied by both walking and running footsteps, heading for the double doors.

Harper, hurl that thing through after we've fired, it should give them something to think about if they're trying to overwhelm us." he said, going down on one knee and flicking his hand forwards with two fingers extended towards the doors.

"Respectfully sirs, if all you're gonna do is bicker and question me then could you keep it in person and off the line, we don't need turmoil in the ranks at a time like this." Crew said into his radio in an angry whisper, "and if you wish to question my experience Captain, just remember that I have more combat experience than most of you combined. The simple fact that you've shot some bullets into these monsters doesn't give you the right to kill us off one by one by constant retreat. Any issues you have with my orders, take it up with the Lieutenant-Colonel, I'm sure he'll enjoy your power trips." With the last angry sentence out of his mouth Crew switched off the radio and shook his head in disbelief, turning back towards the doors as the sounds drew nearer.

"Sir!" Keith said, snapping to attention with a salute. "I am a soldier trained by the US Marine Corp. My marksmanship skills and courage under fire are second to none. Without a weapon, I cannot effectively hold this doorway. With a weapon, I'm a formitable fighting machine that will give those bastards hell and WILL hold this stairwell. The bigger the weapon, the better, sir as it will allow to inflict more casualites on the enemy."

Keith could tell his words had rung home and had convinced Smith.

OOC,Captain Kelleher is female, by the way. ;) The radios are hands-free units built into the inside of your Racal suits, so you couldn't throw one down. You could switch it off, however. There is room in the padded cells for more people, just not enough for everyone. Two more people could squeeze into the south cell if you open it up again. The north cell, which is open and empty, can hold up to six people.
In the stairwell-
"All right," said Smith. "I need to hold onto my sniper rifle, but I can lend you my sidearm." He handed Keith his Beretta.

"Anyone want to borrow mine?" asked Wesson.

"I'm a very good shot," said Robert.

Wesson handed him his pistol. "We can better hold the stairs from the other side of the door, in the women's ward. At least then we'll see 'em coming. Everyone who doesn't have a weapon, wait in the stairwell." The snipers led the way through the door, their rifles at the ready.

"Be careful, Robert!" called Beth as Robert followed them.

In the women's isolation ward-
Wesson and Smith took up positions in front of the stairwell door. Robert stood between and behind them. They heard gunfire and shouting in the distance to the north.

In the men's isolation ward-
The doors were suddenly thrown open as the orange-suited figure of Airman Phyllis Darrow ran through at high speed. She made a beeline for the group that was ready for her, her red eyes visible through the clear faceplate of her helmet. Behind her, Frank Hodges staggered in, moving more slowly but with no less determination. He had clearly turned as well. Bringing up the rear crawled Senior Airman Sam Wright and Airman Basic Ken Raffin, both of them zombies too.

Harper calmly pulled the pin out of his grenade and held his arm back, ready to throw as soon as the others had fired. Kowalski wavered, badly shocked from seeing his former comrades-in-arms coming for him. Even so, he was able to act on instinct. He sprayed a short burst at Darrow, the bullets passing just to her side. Feaster panicked, but only briefly. His burst was far more accurate. Only one bullet struck her, but it blew a massive hole in her lower chest. However, she didn't even slow down...
OOC,Crew and Kelleher, roll Sanity. Sanity loss is 0/1d10. If you do not go temporarily insane, you may act. You may fire once before Darrow attacks, but there is no time to aim for the head. The other zombies are slower, so they won't get close enough to attack this round.
At the padded cells-
Zorie groaned. "I'm starting to think I'd rather be out there with the walking dead," she said.

"What?" said David. "I thought I was being nice."

Outside the cells, the medical staff could hear the gunfire from around the corner. Battle had been joined.
Colin Lewis,You are out for two more turns, including this one.

"Thank you Smith, and Wesson" Keith said with a smirk on his face. "You all stand back by the door since you have better range. Robert and I will take the front line and will stay low so you can shoot over us. We'll fall back to the door while you cover us if you need to then you can escape through the door while we cover you. Oh yeah, can we have your extra ammo too? We may need it."

Crew remained calm and professional as Darrow charged, rolling his eyes as Kelleher went into hysterics behind him. He sized up the rapidly approaching figure and easily fired off a shot into Darrow's chest, punching through the Racal suit and blowing a basketball-sized exit wound through her back however the tthing that had once been human pressed un unperturbed.
OOC,Have I done all that right or have I forgotten something? also should I roll for dodge incase she attacks me?
OOC,oh and it's common in the BA to call officers of both sexes sir

OOC,Thanks, I didn't know that. Johansen called her "sir" too (which wouldn't be strictly necessary anyway, as they're of equal rank, but she is in charge here). I'm not sure if the USAF has the same practice. Yes, you did that right. Sanity is rolled against your current Sanity score of 32, not your starting score of 40, but you still passed. The hit location you rolled was actually the right arm, but it may not matter. There's no need to roll Dodge if you shoot, as you can't Dodge and attack in the same round.
In the stairwell-
Amanda put her arms around Melinda and Lisa, holding them tight. Beth waited nervously.

In the women's isolation ward-
"Sure," said Smith. He took three 9mm magazines from his belt and gave them to Keith, while Wesson did the same for Robert.

In the men's isolation ward-
Crew's bullet punched a large hole through Darrow's right arm. Impossibly, she surged forward anyway and rushed Kowalski, stumbling and coming up short. Harper hurled the grenade with all his might, but his aim was off. Luckily, he overthrew it so that the humans in the ward were not in danger. The grenade sailed through the still swinging doors and into the operating room, where it deonated with a loud explosion that could be heard throughout the building. Even so, the two crawling zombies were still struck with shrapnel from the blast.

Captain Kelleher paused, suddenly feeling a strange craving. Frank Hodges strode forward, getting dangerously close to the assembled defenders. The two crawling zombies also advanced. Kowalski blazed away at Darrow, hitting her with two rounds. Riddled with lead, she fell twitching. She was no longer a threat. Feaster opened up on Hodges, striking him with a single bullet in the right arm. It didn't slow him.
Captain Claire Kelleher,Your temporary insanity is a desire to eat human flesh. You don't have to actually try to do it, but you're going to be useless for ten combat rounds, including the one that just ended and the current one. Feel free to roleplay your insanity.
OOC,Crew, you may now attack again if you wish. The range is normal. There is no time to aim for the head before Hodges gets to attack.
At the padded cells-
The medical staff members, along with Valdez and Winters, readied their weapons and pointed them at the corner.
Colin Lewis,This is your last round of being unconscious.

Crew rolled his eyes at Kelleher's apparent insanity "and this is why women don't get combat postings" he muttered to himself before flicking on his radio and saying "Captain Johansen, if you want to prove your experise in these matters then do me a favor and calm Kelleher down, and if that fails knock her out and strap her down, before she hurts one of us or herself." he said tersely, leaving the radio on in case of an emergency. Crew nodded in approval of Kowalski's shot before turning to target Hodges. He fired, his short hitting the deceased airman in it's right arm, however the shot was only a glancing blow and the thing pressed onwards. Crew cursed his aim, noting that he seemed to be firing too far to the right, but put it down to the pressure of the situation.

In the stairwell-
The women remained where they were, shivering as the distant gunfire contnued.

In the women's isolation ward-
"We have orders to remain here and guard the stairwell, sir," said Wesson to Keith. "We can't take a chance on anything slippng past us and getting to the women. You and Robert are free to go forward if you like, but I'd have to advise against it. You'd be putting yourselves at risk."

In the men's isolation ward-
Feaster and Crew together managed to cripple Hodges's right arm, but he kept coming. Harper hastily holstered his pistol and unslung his M-16, shooting Hodges with two rounds. Both of them took out his leg from under him and dropped him to his knees, but he dragged himself forward with his good left arm. Captain Johansen arrived just in time to see Hodges crawl after Harper. who was out of reach - for now. But at this point the other two zombies were catching up.
OOC,Nils Johansen, roll Sanity for seeing the zombies. Sanity loss is 0/1d10. If you do not go temporarily insane, you may act freely. If you'd like to try to bring Captain Kelleher to her senses, roll Psychoanalysis. If you succeed, she will be able to act freely next round, but not this one. You may instead fire one shot before the zombies get to attack. Crew, you also get one shot before they attack. There is no time to aim at the head, so you'll need to roll random hit locations. It will only take 2 more damage to any location to destroy Hodges, but the other two zombies have only taken 9 damage each so far. If you miss when shooting at Hodges, you'll need to roll Luck to avoid hitting Harper. No Luck roll is required this time for shooting at the other two zombies. Hodges is at point blank range, but the other two are at normal range.
At the padded cells-
Colin Lewis slowly came to his senses, his blurry vision resolving itself into something resembling clarity. He was lying on the gurney in his padded cell, but he was not strapped down and the door was now closed. David and Zorie Spooner were inside the cell with him, and he could hear gunfire from nearby. His head throbbed with pain.

Colin Lewis,You can use any unarmed attack form you wish. It's up to you whether you're trying to knock someone out or kill them. Make sure you state which you're doing. A Kick attack, however, will not be a knockout attack and could be lethal considering the damage you can do with Martial Arts. Fist/Punch has a base skill of 50%, Kick has a base skill of 25%, and Head Butt has a base skill of 10%. If you attack someone and hit, go ahead and roll damage. They're not expecting an attack, so they don't get a chance to Dodge or Parry. Any hit will be a Martial Arts success as well, since your highest unarmed attack skill is 50%. It doubles the base damage dice, but not the damage bonus, so a punch does 2d3+1d6 and a kick does 3d6.

Brush off the clouds and cheer up,
Put on a happy face.
Take off the gloomy mask of tragedy,
It's not your style;
You'll look so good that you'll be glad
Ya' decide to smile!
Pick out a pleasant outlook,
Stick out that noble chin;
Wipe off that "full of doubt" look,
Slap on a happy grin!
And spread sunshine all over the place,
Just put on a happy face!
Put on a happy face
Put on a happy face
And if you're feeling cross and bitterish
Don't sit and whine
Think of banana split and licorice
And you'll feel fine
I knew a girl so glooming
She'd never laugh or sing
She wouldn't listen to me
Now she's a mean old thing
So spread sunshine all over the place
Just put on a happy face
So, put on a happy face"

In the stairwell-
"Oh, I do hope Keith is careful," said Amanda, hugging Melinda tighter. She had already lost one son today, and she could not bear to lose another.

In the women's isolation ward-
Robert and Keith advanced into the operating theater, each of them pushing a gurney before him, while the snipers stood guard outside the stairwell.

In the operating theater-
Keith and Robert pushed through the double doors and into the operating theater. It was a mess, with plenty of blood and debris, but no bodies or zombies. The gunfire was coming from the double doors on the opposite side of the room which led to the men's ward, and there was also the sound of...singing?
OOC,Keith, if you enter the men's ward, you will see the zombies. In that case, roll Sanity. Sanity loss is 0/1d10, but you can lose at most 6 more Sanity for seeing zombies, so any loss of more than 6 counts as 6.
In the men's isolation ward-
Crew put another bullet into Hodges, stopping him cold. But there was now nothing to stop the other two zombies from reaching the defenders. Johansen babbled incohorently, his mind shattered from the shocking tableau. Kowalski fired wildly at Sam Wright, but no bullets struck him. Feaster did likewise, only just hitting him with all three rounds. His arms and belly were peppered with lead, but he did not stop.

Sam Wright reached Kowalski and dragged him to the floor, clamping his jaws down on his left thigh. Kowalski somehow managed to keep his wits. Raffin came for Harper, chomping him hard in the left leg. Harper didn't lose his head, but he did lose his footing. He too went down.
Captain Nils Johansen,You'll be babbling and gibbering for twelve combat rounds, including this one. Feel free to roleplay your madness, but you'll be useless in this fight.
OOC,Crew, you have one more shot before the zombies attack again. The range is now point blank, and there is of course still no time to aim for the head.
At the padded cells-
Zoriie was unaware that Colin Lewis had regained consciousness. David was equally clueless.

Re: IC-GOLD-Triage(Everyone)

Keith Deeds,Not if you move towards it, as they can't see you until you actually enter. If you go up to the doors and look through the round glass windows, you'll be able to see the situation inside. Kowalski and Harper are down, and one zombie is on each of them. They're both right in the middle of the crowd of defenders at the northern end of the ward, so there's little chance of any bullets coming your way - unless you're mistaken for a zombie again, that is. Any bullets you fire at the zombies could hit their victims instead if you miss, but you won't be in position to fire until next round anyway. By then those guys could be dead.

"Careful," Keith said. "Let's see if we can help these folks."

Moving towards the Men's ward Keith shouled out: "Survivors coming through the door. Watch your fire!"

Pushing the gurney in front of him, Keith and Robert pushing the men's wards doors open. The scene in front of them was as horrific as anything Keith had ever seen yet he was able to hold it together.

Re: IC-GOLD-Triage(Everyone)

In the stairwell-
Beth nodded to Amanda, tears forming in her eyes. She didn't know what she would do if anything happened to Robert. They had been through so much together.

In the operating theater-
"Don't shoot, we're alive!" called Robert as he pushed his gurney through the doors with Keith.

In the men's isolation ward-
Feaster plugged Sam Wright, blowing out his spine. The zombie collapsed on top of Kowalski, who rolled onto his side and fired at Raffin. He put a round in the zombie's upper chest.

"Harper!" cried Crew, turning his Webley on Raffin. He shot the ghoul that was eating his man, drilling its left arm. Harper was in agony and could not bring his rifle to bear. He fumbled for his pistol as the zombie that was eating him alive made to attack again, managing to shoot it. The 9mm bullet barely grazed its left thigh.

Keith and Robert entered in time to see the last zombie wrap its arms around Harper and sink its teeth into him once more. Robert remained perfectly calm, but he knew he had arrived too late to save the man. The zombie bit down hard on Harper's wounded leg, and a loud snap indicated that the bone had broken. Harper mercifully blacked out.

Beyond them, the doctors continued their mad capering.
OOC,Keith, you may fire twice at the zombie. Range for you is normal, and for each bullet that misses you must roll Luck to avoid hitting Harper (though that would probably be more merciful than anything at this point). Crew, you may fire one shot. The range is point blank for you. There is no time to aim for the head, but 14 or more total damage will finish this zombie.
At the padded cells-
Colin's kick broke David's neck with a crack, and the big trucker dropped lifelessly to the floor, blood gushing out of his shattered skull. Zorie screamed in abject horror, but she remained mostly level-headed. "You've killed him!" she cried. "Help! Colin went berserk and killed David!"

The enormity of what Colin had done sank in, and the last shreds of his humanity ripped asunder. He had just killed a fellow survivor, a man who had once been his friend, deliberately and for no good reason.

Out in the hall, Lt. Sara Evans fished out her keys and unlocked the cell. "Simpson, take him down!" she ordered, opening the door. Gary Simpson gripped his baton in one hand and his pistol in the other as he stepped into the doorway, filling the exit from the crowded cell. He shuddered when he saw the dead body, shaken badly.
OOC,Colin Lewis, you've just lost your last Sanity point, and you have nobody to blame but yourself. Murdering David is good for a 1/1d10 Sanity loss, so even if you were to pass your Sanity roll by getting a 1 on 1d100, you would still lose your final Sanity point and drop to 0. At this point Colin Lewis has become an NPC, having passed beyond reason.

Keith steadied himself on the gurney and fired off two shots at the head of the closest zombie. The first shot missed it's mark, but the second one could not have been more true of a shot. It hit the zombie square in the left arm and blew it clean off. The bullet that missed struck Harper square in teh chest doing massive damage and ending his suffering.

The sight of killing Harper did little to phase Keith. Keith had sliped fulling into soldier mode. War was hell and there were often time casualties. Besides... he thought to himself, he's better off dead than undead.

Handy,Its ok. With my new job, my upcoming move, and my new game I had to make a choice. I choose at this time to only run 3 characters instead of 4. Sometime in the future I may do 4 again but at this time again i choose to get rid of one but do it my way instead of making you take over yet another character. So knowing that Colin was about to crack anyway I did it this way. Sorry if you are angry about this.

Keith Deeds,No, there's no time to aim for the head. That applied to everyone. You still need to roll 1d20 for hit locations. Also, please roll Sanity for accidentally shooting and killing Harper. Sanity loss is 1/1d8.
Colin Lewis,I'm not angry, but if you no longer want to play a character, you should just let me know and I'll gladly take him back. You've just taken two characters out of the game when there was no need, and one of them had been in it from the beginning. He was also your friend's character, so if he did want to play David again, he can't any more. The zombies are almost mopped up and Chapter 5 is going to end soon. Colin Lewis,What I meant was that David was a character played by a friend of yours in real life who might have wanted to return to the game and pick him up again. David wasn't guarding Colin either, he was locked in there with him. Also, now I have to play Colin anyway, since he became an NPC the moment he hit 0 Sanity. He might not last much longer, but you never know. The sad thing is, he would have been allowed to leave the base once this crisis was over. In fact, the higher-ups probably would have insisted on it. Of course, the first zombie he saw would have had a 99% chance of driving him personally insane anyway.
In the stairwell-
Lisa flinched as the shooting continued. "Why won't they just stay dead?!" she cried.

In the men's isolation ward-
Keith's bullet buried itself deep in Harper's left shoulder and dug through into his torso. It had hit something vital, for a pool of blood oozed out through the tears in his orange suit. The demolitionist had been doomed the moment he had first been bitten, but his end had come sooner than it might have otherwise. Senior Airman Coltrane had just come around in time to see his messy death, but he immediately went into shock again. He didn't completely lose his mind, but he came close. Feaster swalllowed hard, knowing that it could have been him, that it still might be. He lost all reason, and with grim certainty of his doom he passed out. It was just a bit too much for Kowalski after everything he had been through. He was overwhelmed by thoughts of his own impending death from the bite that even now burned him, but his mind was blank enough that he could function on instinct alone. Crew could not bear the sight of his man's gruesome death, but the battle had numbed him to shock for the most part.

Robert calmly raised his own pistol and fired a wild shot. It struck Feaster in the left arm, shattering bone and causing massive hemorrhaging. Coltrane shot the zombie in the shoulder, finishing it at last.

"God, it burns!" moaned Kowalski.
OOC,Captains Johansen and Kelleher, roll Sanity for seeing Harper's death. Sanity loss is 0/1d6. If you get a temporary insanity result, it will extend the duration of your current temporary insanity.
At the padded cells-
Zorie desperately lashed out at Colin, trapped as she was, but her swing went wide and struck Simpson. He couldn't bring up his baton in time, and she socked him hard in the temple. Stunned, he was unprepared for Colin's attack. His massive fist connected with Simpson's right arm. He dropped like a rock. Colin laughed with glee. These terrorists had captured him, tortured him, experimented on him. They had done something to his mind. He needed to kill them and escape and somehow get back to his unit. He didn't know why the woman was helping him, but he was glad of it. Now he had a fighting chance.

Captain Johansen sees the sight of Harper's death from the corner of his eye. It is too much for his already damaged mind and he slips further towards insanity. Oh God he's dead! Dead dead dead dead!

Keith quickly moves to the fallen body of Harper and puts a bullet into the head of the corpse; preventing it from getting up and hurting anyone else.

"We need to give Kolowski some medical attention and get him into an isolation cell!" Keith said to Crew. "The rest of us need to barricade the doors STAT!"

OOC,Keith, you'll still need to roll for the shot. You can't miss, but there's still a small chance your gun can jam.

In the stairwell-
Amanda pulled Lisa and Beth into the hug, and the four women huddled together.

In the men's isolation ward-
The first bullet to the head didn't do all that much damage to Harper, but a second shot obliterated what was left of his brain. "Sirs! Oi, you lot!" barked Crew at the mad doctors, but they did not respond. "The bloody doctors a doctor!" He spoke into his radio. "This is Crew. The hostiles in the men's ward are down, but we have a man bitten and infected. We need medics and people to barricade the entrance doors."

Robert borrowed some medical supplies from the ward and knelt beside Kowalski. He tried to clean and bandage the wound, but there was little he can do. "I'd better leave this to the experts."

Feaster just stared in shock at the whole scene.

"It's the aliens!" said Coltrane. "They're behind all of this, I tell you!"
Captain Nils Johansen,You have six more rounds of insanity remaining, including this one.
Captain Claire Kelleher,You have ten more rounds of insanity remaining, including this one.
OOC,Being at point blank range doesn't necessarily double damage, it just doubles your effective skill. An impale does double the damage dice, and while it is more likely to happen at point blank range, that first shot didn't quite qualify and only did 4 damage. The second shot I rolled for you was an impale, though it would have done enough damage to destroy his brain even if it had not been. Anyone in the men's ward who passes a Listen roll will hear what is going on at the padded cells.
At the padded cells-
Colin snatched up the fallen pistol, and Zorie pressed herself back against the wall, terrified. Colin then removed Simpson's belt, put it on, and hung the baton from it. He turned to Zorie and grabbed her with his free hand.

"Don't hurt me!" she cried, her legs melting beneath her.

"Thanks for the help," whispered Colin. "Now let's get out of here. Just pretend you're my hostage." He dragged her out into the hallway and pressed the gun to her back, to the shock of the medical personnel waiting out there. "All right, nobody try to stop me, or she gets it," he snarled, kicking the door shut behind him.

Keith left the men's ward and returned to the womens ward where the snipers were. "Friendly coming through" he yelled to the snipers before entering the area.
"It's all clear in there. We need to get the doors barricaded ASAP" he said as me moved to the stairwell door.

"Oi! You! Keith and whoever your freind is, get back in here and subdue these ripping nutjobs!" Crew shouted at the retreating back of the civilian beofre taking up his radio "Smith, Wesson, move the civilians with you to my position so we can put them with the others then wedge the men's ward doors open and set up a series of obstacles to help you cover the approach to the stairs." Crew returned his radio to his belt before standing up and pushing open the chamber of his revolver, allowing the spent cases to fall out and replacing them with fresh bullets from his ammo pouch before turning to Coltrane, "Ok Airman, looks like I'm running the show now, so what we're gonna do is help subdue the officers then we regroup and start clearing this mess up." he said before looking up sharply as he heard the commotion past the doors. "scratch that Coltrane, we have other issues" He warned then cocked back the hammer on his revolver and pointed it at the door, shouting "Friendlies coming in!"
Handy,I'd just like to let you know that when I looked up who was left I noticed that you haven't listed Smith or Wesson in the current locations thread. :)

OOC,Wesson, Smith, Kowalski, and Feaster are not playable characters. Their character sheets are not shown, nor are their locations and equipment displayed. Keith can only reach the opearting theater this round, but his voice will carry beyond it.
In the stairwell-
"Keith gave the all clear," said Amanda, "so I think we'll be fine."

Smith knocked on the stairwell door and pushed it open. "Yes, ma'am," he said. "It'll be all right. Let's get you safely to the men's ward, ladies. Follow us, please."

Amanda led the women through the door into the women's ward, motioning for Melinda to come with her.

In the women's isolation ward-
Once the women started to enter from the stairwell, the two snipers proceeded down the hall, their rifles at the ready just in case. They entered the operating theater.

In the operating theater-
Keith went through the doors from the men's ward just as the snipers entered from the women's ward. "The women are all right, sir," said Wesson, who had led the way. "They're right behind us."

At the padded cells-
"Hold your fire!" said Lt. Sara Evans, raising her hands. "We can't risk anything happening to Zorie." The rest of the personnel in the hall outside the padded cells stood down, and Colin dragged Zorie at gunpoint around the corner into the men's ward. Once they were out of sight, Sara spoke into her radio as she examined Gary Simpson: "Mr. Lewis has escaped from his cell. He has a gun and is holding Zorie Spooner hostage. He has killed David the truck driver and badly injured Airman Simpson." With tears in her eyes, she expertly eased Gary's injured head and revived him. He wasn't feeling quite as bad now, but he was still severely hurt.

"Jeez," he muttered. "That maniac packs a wallop."

"It's adrenalin, mixed with a rather high dose of crazy. I don't know how he managed it either. He was sedated, I saw to it myself. He's got Zorie."

In the men's isolation ward-
"They're all dead in here," said Robert. "I mean, for good. Do you really need me? I want to see if Beth's okay."

Coltrane did an excellent job bandaging Kowalski's savaged arm, but still couldn't completely close the wound. "I did my best, Sergeant Major, but..." he said, letting the sentence hang. He knew just how doomed his comrade was.

Crew began to reload his revolver. He had managed to load in two more bullets, for a total of four in the gun, when Colin Lewis dragged Zorie around the corner, holding her in front of him as a shield. He had a pistol pressed against her head. "Back off, you REMFs!" he snarled. "Just get out of my way and let me go, or else!"

"Leave her alone," said Kowalski, cradling his arm. "Take me instead."
OOC,If anyone in the ward wants to fire at Colin Lewis, the range is normal. If you miss, roll Luck to make sure you don't hit Zorie. if you attack Colin in any way, he may get a shot or even two off first.

Crew nodded to Coltrane "It's ok Airman" he said, hesitating as if to say more when Sara spoke "Understood Evans, do what you can for the Airman and hang back, we don't want to give him another hostage and you're more useful where you are." he replied down the radio before snapping the chamber of his revolver shut as David rounded the corner. He kept his weapon down, watching Colin as he advanced "We're not keeping you here Colin, you can leave if you like but you can't take Lt. Spooner with you, you understand?" he said, hoping to appeal to the man's reason "Look I'm holstering my weapon" he said, slowing putting the revolver away. "Now it's your turn, let Lt. Spooner go." Crew said, motioning with his hand at the Coltrane and Robert not to fire.
Handy,Could Crew unsling his rifle and aim quick enough to take out David before he shot Zorie if he took him by surprise or if there was a distraction? Also, here's a Fast Talk roll to try and convince him which failed.

In the women's isolation ward-
Amanda returned her son's hug but then backed away when he warned her of the hostage situation, pulling Melinda and Lisa with her.

"What about Robert?" Beth asked Keith. "He's still out there!"

At the padded cells-
Lt. Evans was too busy and too high on adrenalin to notice that an NCO was giving her orders, and besides, it seemed like good advice to her. She eased Airman SImpson out into the hall and continued to treat him, doing a great job. "Just lie still," she told him. "You heard the Sergeant Major. Ellison and Gomez, give me a hand here."

Lt. Ellison was able to help some more, but only a little. With Lt. Gomez's and Airman Winters's help, the work was going faster and would soon be done.

The others remained where they were, waiting nervously.

In the men's isolation ward-
Coltrane and Robert both stood down. "The aliens must have him under mind control!" said Coltrane. "We all need to wear tinfoil on our heads to protect ourselves!"

"Don't try to follow me!" barked Colin, clearly beyond reason. He pulled Zorie past the others, keeping her between him and them, backing through the doors to the operating room.
OOC,Coltrane is actually a Senior Airman, and Zorie is a civilian, but Crew only arrived recently and might not know this, and he could also be unfamiliar with USAF rankings. Under normal circumstances, due to his low DEX, Crew wouldn't get off a shot until after Colin fired once even if he had his weapon ready. Without it ready, Colin would get to shoot twice before Crew goes once. A distraction could change that, but it would have to be a good one, as Colin is expecting trouble.
Captain Nils Johansen,You have four more rounds of temporary insanity, including this one.
Captain Claire Kelleher,You have eight more rounds of temporary insanity, including this one.
In the operating theater-
Wesson and Smith took up their posts in the southwest and southeast corners of the room, respectively. "We're in the OR now, Sergeant Major," reported Smith on his radio. "Ready for your orders." Just then, Colin started hauling Zorie through the doors from the men's ward.

Crew slowly raised his radio to his lips and spoke calmly into it "Watch it boys, we have a crazy with a hostage, possibly infected, coming in with his back to you. if you have any cover I'd recommend you get behind it, then try and shoot him in his back, it should be broad enough to prevent you hitting the hostage. When you're ready to fire get one of the civilians to say go down the radio then open up, but try not to hit the hostage if possible." Crew then clipped the radio to his belt, thumbing the volume up to full so that he could hear the signal then got ready to swing his rifle out from where it was slung loosely across his back.
OOC,being as I need to act after the NPCs I'ma just roll up for the shot. OOC,Actually, Crew, you're not going to be in a position to shoot this round, as Colin will move through the door and be out of your line of sight before you get to fire. You can certainly draw the rifle and move to the doors where you'd be able to fire next round, but it may not be necessary...
In the women's isolation ward-
Keith could have seen the scene in the operating theater unfolding through the glass windows in the door if he had wanted to, but he was not in the same room as Colin and was in no danger of being spotted by him.

"Is Robert all right?" Beth asked him, increasing worry in her voice.

Amanda held Melinda. "I can't believe Colin just snapped like that," she said. "Maybe I could talk some sense into him..."

"Don't go out there," said Lisa. "He's already got one hostage, don't give him another. Or he may just open fire when he sees you. If he killed David in cold blood, he's too far gone."

"Don't say that. Nobody's too far gone."

In the operating theater-
Colin backed into the room, letting the doors swing shut behind him. He pulled Zorie towards the doors to the intake area. He didn't even notice the snipers in the corners, crouching behind beds and taking aim at him. "Can't get to the civilians right now," whispered Wesson in the radio, "and I don't want to put them at risk, but I have to take this shot." He squeezed the trigger, but Colin hesitated at just the wrong time and the bullet went wide. Smith opened fire as well, hitting the madman in the heart and slaying him instantly. "Target is neutralized," he reported on the radio coldly.

Zorie leaned against the wall and slumped over. "Oh, God..." she moaned, holding her head in her hands. In spite of the trauma, she was very resilient and was fine after a moment of rest.

In the men's isolation ward-
Feaster helped Kowalski around the corner to the padded cells. Robert breathed a sigh of relief that it was over, but shook his head. Too many people had died already. How many more would kill and be killed for no reason?

At the padded cells-
"Put him in the south cell," said Lt. Sara Evans when Feaster arrived with Kowalski. "I'm so sorry, Airman," she said to Kowalski.

"Thank you, ma'am," he answered, looking at his feet.

The rest of the medical staff was almost finished treating Gary Simpson.

OOC,thats cool, shame because it was such a nice roll but ah well lol
Crew swung his rifle down as Colin exited, then listened as the two snipers fired. He brought his radio to his lips and said "well done boys, you've both done well today." Crew then proceded through the doors to the operating room where he saw Colin's body and Keith running in. Crew looked sharply at Keith then said to the snipers "if one of you can spare a bullet it wouldn't hurt, from what the doctors were saying earlier madness may be one of the signs of infection, and we don't need it to spread. once we're done here we should all regroup and take a full roll call, I don't want more random nut-jobs crawling up out of the woodwork"

OOC,Actually, I'll count that roll now. It hits even with the -5 penalty for shooting at the head, and that 11 damage will destroy it well enough.
In the operating theater-
The snipers had given away their sidearms, so they started ejecting their spent casings from their M-24s and chambering fresh rounds. Zorie was unarmed, so Crew turned to Colin's body and put a bullet through its skull.

"Thanks, Sergeant Major," said Smith. "Damn shame it had to come to this, though."

Zorie stood up. "Thank you," she said. "Now we'd better get organized."

In the women's isolation ward-
"What happened to Robert?" demanded Beth, her eyes watering. "Is he dead?"

Amanda pulled her in close. "I'm sure he's all right," she said.

In the men's isolation ward-
The doctors continued their insane ranting, and Coltrane wasn't much better. He somehow managed to find a roll of aluminum foil and tore off a piece, making a skullcap out of it which he placed on his head. Then he began to make more for the officers. Obviously, they too were acting under the influence of alien mind control.

Robert followed Crew into the operating theater.

At the padded cells-
Lt. Sara Evans and Feaster hauled David's body out of the south cell. Then they locked Kowalski inside. The rest of the medical staff completed their treatment of Gary Simpson.

Crew signalled for those around him to follow him then pushed through the door into the men's ward, where he considered the three insane people within before saying "Right, someone fetch me some zip-cuffs or rope or whatever restraints you can find, then let's tie these dumb suckers up until they wise up or start trying to eat us." Crew shook his head and crouched down and regarded Coltrane as he sat intently working on another foil hat.

In the women's isolation ward-
The rest of the women filtered back into the operating theater.

In the operating theater-
"May we have our sidearms back, please?" asked Wesson to Robert and Keith.

"Of course," said Robert, returning his pistol and ammo.

Beth and the other women entered the OR. "Robert!" cried Beth, running up to him and throwing her arms around him, tears of joy running down her cheeks. "I was so worried about you!"

Robert hugged her and gently stroked her back. "Thanks, but I'm not about to let anything happen to me. There's too much to live for."

The snipers followed Crew back to the men's ward.

At the padded cells-
Sara Evans tried to treat Simpson further, but there was nothing more she could do for him, nor could Barbara Ellison. Oscar Gomez was able to help some more, and Winters helped too. He was becoming an old hand at this.

In the men's isolation ward-
"I am helping, sir," said Coltrane to Captain Johansen. He finished making another foil hat and placed it on top of Johansen's orange suit's helmet. Around the same time, he started to calm down and felt like himself again. "It's working! I'll make one for you too, Sergeant Major, just as soon as I help Captain Kelleher." He started working on another one and placed it over her helmet when it was ready. She too began to calm down and feel disgusted by what she had been doing. Crew couldn't help but wonder whether the tin foil really was having an effect or if it was just a coincidence. He also had to wonder what would happen next.
OOC,Both Captain Johansen and Captain Kelleher may act normally again. Chapter 5 is done for Gold, but feel free to continue talking, roleplaying, and planning with each other and the NPCs. "Situation normal, sir," reported Lt. Sara Evans on her radio. She didn't finish saying the remainder of the acronym SNAFU, but it was pretty obvious to everyone. "Kowalski has been secured and Airman Simpson is recovering well. Senior Airman Tom Wu is MIA."

In the men's isolation ward-
"No, don't take it off, sir!" insisted Coltrane, scooping up the foil cap. "The aliens could take control of you again at any time!"

"Certainly" Keith said as he returned the sidearm. "Thanks for letting us use them. I can't help but to shudder when I think of what could have happened back there had we not been able to help. Thanks."
Keith returned to Melinda and his mother a hugged them both. The adrenalin of the battle wore off and Keith instantly felt weak in the knees. He sat down and ran his hands through his hair to hide their trembling.

"It's ok sir" Crew said, putting his hand out to help the Captain up "we all have our moments." he reassured, although his tone was mildly disapproving "Now if you've got yourself together sir I'd much appreciate your expertise with dealing with our colleagues Kelleher and Coltrane, then we can start making sense of this place again." Crew bent and picked up Johansen's foil hat and placed it carefully on the top of his suit before crouching and looking at Coltrane sadly "look son, I'm not being controlled, now will you let the good Captain help you, then we can all move on" he said, smiling at the Senior Airman.

In the men's isolation ward-
"Of course, Sergeant Major," said Coltrane. He saluted Captain Johansen. "Sir, what are your orders?"

In the operating theater-
Amanda squeezed both Keith and Melinda. "We're going to be safe now," she said. "I can feel it."

"I think we will be too" Keith said to reassure the women. However, he knew in the back of his mind that they may never be safe again. He recalled the worm that attacked the hotel where everyone felt safe and knew it was only a matter of time before they showed up here.

Captain Johansen returned Coltrane's salute. Gather up all the bodies of the slain and put a bullet into their heads. We don't want another outbreak. He turns Crew. Sergeant Major, thank you for taking over the defense of the base while Captain Kelleher and I were... incapacitated. You did an excellent job.

At the padded cells-
"Sorry, Sergeant," said Lt. Evans, "but I'm outside your chain of command. You take your orders from Sergeant Major Crew. Like me, he takes orders from Captains Kelleher and Johansen."

At the padded cells-
"You can ask him yourself if you like," said Lt. Evans. "You've got a radio built into your suit's helmet too, remember. And he's right around the corner in the men's ward, so you could always report in person."

In the operating theater-
A squad of SFs in orange Racal suits burst into the room from the intake area, waving their M-16s around. "Nobody move!" shouted one of them.

Another one strode in, taller than the rest. "I'm Major Jesse Stone," he said, "and I am now in command of this clinic."
