Z-Day - 4:44 PM Central Time - Downtown Omaha, Nebraska
On the streets-
John Lee drove through the streets of Omaha, trying to avoid the mobs that were after him. He was slowly realizing that coming here had been a mistake. There hadn't been that many of them out in rural Nebraska for most of his journey here, but Omaha was still crawling with the infected. His gas tank was getting uncomfortably low, and he couldn't afford to stop anywhere to refuel lest the cannibals catch up with him. Even though he could easily outpace them, they pursued him relentlessly.

As John rounded a corner, he came face to face with a huge mob of about a hundred of them. They turned and stumbled after the car, and he slammed on the brakes, shifted into reverse, and backed up. He turned the corner again, heading back the way he had originally come, only to find that the bunch that had been chasing him a block back were only a few hundred feet ahead. Glancing in the rear view mirror, he saw that the new horde had followed him around the corner. He was trapped between them.

Then, without any warning or apparent reason, both hordes just fell over in the street. Then the car began to lose speed, and the steering wheel stopped responding.

On the streets-
John Lee maintained perfect control of the vehicle, shifting into neutral and coasting to a halt. He tried to restart the car, but in vain. It wasn't responding, and the ignition failed every time he turned the key. He looked around, but saw litlte of note.

Shrugging, he unbuckled his seatbelt and got out of the car. He opened up the hood and took a look underneath it, but he couldn't see anything wrong with the engine. "Guess I'll have to hoof it from here on out," he said to himself. Making sure that he stil had the DVD in its case and gripping his tire iron, he wandered through the streets of Omaha looking for any sign of life.

For about twenty minutes, he didn't find any, though there were dead bodies scattered here and there. As he was walking past an auto body shop called "Chuck's" and a convenience store, he noticed a school across the street. There was a helicopter on the roof, though the building had not been designed to act as a landing pad. Also on the roof of the school was a middle-aged woman in a lab coat, peering around.

On the streets-
John paused in his tracks when he heard a loud crack coming from inside the auto body shop. He had been just about to call out to the woman when the noise attracted his attention - and his curiosity. Unwilling to give away his own position until he knew more, he crept to the front door of the shop, his footsteps crunching loudly. He opened the front door and entered.

In the auto body shop-
John found himself in a typical garage. A classic 1965 Mustang was parked next to a tow truck. The Mustang's back seat was loaded with large containers of water and jerry cans no doubt full of gasoline. Someone here is planning on making a long trip, he thought. There was a workbench with lots of tools, as well as a stack of spare tires, a lift for cars and light trucks, and a cluttered counter with a cash register. A closed door was at the rear of the shop.
