IC-GOLD-Once More Into the Breach(Everyone else)

Z-Day - 2:55 PM Mountain Time - Warren Air Force Base, west of Cheyenne, Wyoming
On the roof-
Lt. Sara Evans looked on in horror as the Stryker containing the quarantine clinic's reinforcements collided with the west wall of the building at an angle at high speed. With a screech of metal, it slid south along the wall and gradually coasted to a halt just outside the main entrance, the collision robbing it of its momentum. The overhang above the entrance blocked the head nurse's view of the vehicle. The two snipers stood beside her with their M-24 rifles held ready, but they no longer had any targets to shoot.

Behind them stood the civilians. Robert and Beth, a young couple who had passed through the T-Bone, had been the first to arrive at Warren Air Force Base. Zorie Spooner had come from the base to the motel across from the T-Bone with Captain Lereux's team. She was a civilian, and the sole survivor of that ill-fated group. Even so, she had been badly injured in another car crash on her way here. As a medical researcher, her skills were proving very useful for treating her fellow survivors. So were those of Amanda Deeds, a U.S. Navy nurse who had served in Vietnam and was now over sixty years old. She was a recent widow, having lost her husband Clarence and one of her sons when the motel was attacked by a gigantic worm-like creature and a wave of zombies. Currently she was numb with shock. Her surviving son, Keith Deeds, was a skilled mechanic and recently discharged Marine. Together they led what was left of the Rough Riders Motorcycle Club, composed largely of veterans. Lisa Crow, the girlfriend of his late brother, was part of the group, as was his own sweetheart Melinda Christie, a public relations specialist he had rescued from Cabela's headquarters back in Sidney, Nebraska. The last member of their group was Colin Lewis, an Iraq vet who had been suffering from post-traumatic stress even before today. Now he was barely clinging to the tattered remnants of his psyche.

On the fire escape-
David knelt on the fire escape landing, sobbing uncontrollably.

In the stairwell-
Senior Airman Tom Wu, still terror-stricken, ran into the stairwell and started up the stairs.

In the intake area-
The USAF personnel in the intake area heard the crash and were briefly stunned. Lt. Rebecca Doolittle, the co-pilot who had survived both a helicoper crash and the siege of the motel stood in shock. Lt. Barbara Ellison, one of the nurses, turned to Captain Nils Johansen, the doctor in command of the quarantine clinic. "Sir, what are your orders?" she asked. Captain Johansen was the only surviving doctor in the clinic. He had accidentally shot Major Jaclyn MacPherson twice with his own sidearm, and he had wounded himself once in the leg as well with a ricochet. Captain Isaac Drake lay dead in the vestibule, having been gunned down by the SF troopers guarding the entrance when he tried to break quarantine in his panic. Those SF troopers themselves had been slain and had risen up to attack the living, but they had already been taken down with bullets to the head.

The rest of the quarantine clinic staff stood ready for their captain's orders too. Lt. Oscar Gomez was the other nurse present, and there were also two of the orderlies: the gung-ho Airman Catherine Rourke and the tall Airman Gary Simpson. Also present were Senior Airman Roger Coltrane and Airman Frank Hodges, both survivors of the downed helicopter and the battle at the motel. Frank Hodges could feel his injured arm throbbing with pain.
Airman Frank Hodges,Frank could also feel his head starting to burn up, and he knew he was getting feverish. He was still unimpaired, but he was also aware that he would not stay that way.

Captain Johansen runs a hand through his hair. Lt. Gomez, Airman Rourke, stay here. Airman Simpson, Coltrane, Hodges, you're with me. We're going to see if anyone made it alive and what condition they are in. Understood? He keyed his radio. Wesson, I want you to make sure no infected are incoming. We're going to check the Stryker. Lt. Evans, if you see Simpson relieve him of his weapon. He checked his M9 and began to advance towards the downed vehicle carefully, weapon raised.

"I'm on your six, sir" Frank said as he shouldered his weapon. "Sir, things are going to hell on us. There are some capable soldiers among the civilians that we could could sure use to cover our six. I'd feel a whole lot better knowing that they were down here with these weapons " he says as me motions to the weapons of the fallen guards, " coving our asses. I have a bad feeling that Stryker did not have a mechanical failure. Permission to request their aid?"

Captain Johansen shook his head. I'm sorry airman, I have my orders. Though, with the loss of Simpson and the crash perhaps Carmichael could be convinced otherwise. He keyed his radio again. Lieutenant Colonel, this is Captain Nils Johansen. A Stryker hit the side of the wall after we dealt with the attackers. Condition unknown. One of my Airmen is running towards the roof screaming, and both security forces soldiers are dead. Requesting permission to arm the civilians.

On the roof:
Keith moved towards the edge of the roof, and looked over the edge where the striker stuck the building. "I've got a bad feeling about this.." he said to no one in particular.

On the roof-
"Roger that, sir," replied Sara on her radio as she joined Keith at the edge of the roof. Peering down over the side, they could see that the concrete wall had held up under the impact of the Stryker colliding with it at high speed. The vehicle, on the other hand, had to be in bad shape. They couldn't actually see it, however, as it had stopped beneath the overhang. This was probably merciful, as the sight couldn't have been a pretty one.

"All clear as far as I can see, sir," said Airman Wesson into his mic. He and his fellow sniper looked around in all directions.

On the fire escape-
David kept weeping, oblivious to his surroundings.

In the stairwell-
Tom Wu ran up the stairs two at a time. When he reached the first landing, he tried the fire escape door, only to find that Sara had locked it behind her. Filled with panic, he continued running upstairs.

In the intake area-
Simpson and Coltrane followed Johansen and Hodges outside while the others held their ground.

"Some people get to have all the fun, huh?" said Catherine Rourke.

Outside the clinic-
Captain Johansen approached the Stryker with Frank Hodges, Roger Coltrane, and Gary Simpson. The vehicle had been badly damaged, its armored front and side dented and mangled from when it had rammed into and scraped against the wall. The armored personnel carrier was beneath the overhang and had stopped a few feet short of being visible from the vestibule door. The fallen SF troopers' M-16s lay discarded out here, though the bodies in the intake area still had their sidearms in their belt holsters. It was impossible to see into the interior without opening the hatches. The main hatch to the crew compartment was in the rear.

"Negative on that, Captain," replied Carmichael. "We've been through this before, and you know our orders. It isn't my call. You said you've dealt with the attackers with the people you've got, and we're going to send some more Security Forces as well as another doctor. Some of those reinforcements are in that Stryker. Find out their condition and render them whatever medical assistance you can."
OOC,It's Wu who went crazy and ran away, not Simpson. His player hasn't posted yet, but I'm assuming his character obeys your orders, Captain Johansen. Carmichael won't disobey orders, but roll Persuade if you want to try to convince him to go to his superiors and ask them to change their minds.

Colin still squatted on the roof top. In his mind ran the words of a prayer his old Catholic priest often prayed. He began to mutter it outloud, "Non nobis, non nobis, Domine Sed nomini tuo da gloriam" over and over again and again.

Simpson hesitated slightly as the approached the Stryker, and glanced around at his comrades.

"With all due respect, sir, they're wasted. Let's just go back inside and dig in." He was unable to keep a nervy tremor from his voice.

Captain Johansen frowns. Lieutenant Colonel... He trails off. Nevermind, sir. He approaches the Stryker, pistol aimed ahead and knocks on the side. Is anyone alive in there? This is Captain Johansen, please respond if you can hear me!

"This is FUBAR" Frank says is disbelief. "The world has gone to hell and you all are clinging to your 'orders' like a child to his security blanket. Well, guess what, your 'orders' can't watch your back and put a bullet into the head of a zombie who's bearing down on you. Either they are all dead or unconscious in there. Can you hear anything inside?"
Frank keeps a safe distance of about 20 yards from the read of the Stryker with his gun trained on the doors. He keys his mic: "Snipers, watch our six while were exposed out here, okay?"

On the roof-
"We've got your six," replied Airman Wesson on the radio. He, his fellow sniper, and the others up on the roof could see Airman Frank Hodges moving out from beneath the overhang. "I see you down there, but I don't have eyeball on the Stryker. If it all goes south, retreat away from it to draw the hostiles out."

Lt. Sara Evans joined the snipers, her pistol at the ready, hoping she wouldn't need to use it.

On the fire escape-
David continued to cry like a baby.

In the stairwell-
Tom Wu reached the second floor landing and tried the fire escape door there, but it was locked too. Screaming in terror, he started running up the next flight of stairs.

In the intake area-
"Hang tight, everyone," said Lt. Barbara Ellison.

"The waiting's the worst part, ma'am," said Airman Rourke. "Part of me wishes something would just happen already."

"You don't really mean that, do you?!" said Lt. Rebecca Doolittle, trembling with fear.

Outside the clinic-
There was no reply to the captain's knock from within the Stryker. Senior Airman Roger Coltrane cautiously appraoched the rear hatch, his rifle at the ready. "Shall I open the hatch, sir?" he asked.

"Roger, that" Frank said to the snipers. He trained his rifle on the door of the striker: preparing for the doors to open.
"We better do it fast before the dead and wounded rise up and turn."

Captain Johansen scoops one of the SF Trooper's rifle's from the floor and checks to see if it will still function. He holsters his pistol and aims the rifle at the hatch . Affirmative Airman. Open it and retreat as fast as possible, make them come to us.

Outside the clinic-
The M-16 that Captain Johansen picked up didn't feel too heavy in his hands. The magazine was about half full. He didn't have much experience with rifles, but he wasn't such a great shot with a pistol either - the death of Major MacPherson and the wound in his leg were constant reminders of that fact.

"Yes, sir," said Senior Airman Roger Coltrane. He opened up the hatch and glanced inside, shocked at the sight. The five orange-suited SF troopers in the rear compartment of the Stryker had been tossed around like rag dolls. He didn't have to be a doctor to know that they were all dead, their bodies mangled and their faceplates smashed by the high-speed impact with the wall. The driver was equally deceased, thrown forward against the dashboard at the moment of the crash.

As if that weren't bad enough, the bodies began to stir and rise, heading for the nearest source of food - Coltrane. Most of them slowly dragged themselves across the compartment, but one was moving very quickly indeed. The sight was too much for him, and his mind broke. but at least he had the presence of mind to fall back. The one ghoul was faster, and it almost bit him, only to stumble to the pavement at his feet right before it would have. He retreated towards Frank Hodges as the rest of the dead emerged from the wrecked vehicle.
OOC,Captain Johansen, Airman Hodges, and Airman SImpson, all of you roll Sanity. Sanity loss is 0/1d10. If you remain sane, you may then take one shot with your readied rifle. It may be a burst, but remember that bursts cannot be aimed at the head. They do give you a +20 to hit, and if you do hit, roll 1d3 to see how many bullets connect. For each bullet, roll a random hit location on 1d20 as well as separate damage of 2d8. Single shots aimed at the head have the standard -5 penalty. All of you are at normal range except for Airman Simpson. Since he did not move away from the Stryker, he is at point blank range. However, this also means that he will be attacked by the remaining zombies after the shots are resolved if he stays and shoots. If he retreats (whether inside the building or into the parking lot), only the fast-moving zombie will be able to attack him after the shots are resolved, unless it is destroyed first.
On the fire escape-
David cried and cried and cried, oblivious to what was happening around the corner.

In the stairwell-
Tom Wu raced up the stairs in sheer terror.

In the intake area-
"Stay frosty," said Catherine Rourke, keeping her weapon trained on the exit.

On the roof-
Nobody on the roof could see what was happening beneath the overhang, nor were any targets visible. They were able to see Frank Hodges standing in the parking lot below, as well as a terrified Roger Coltrane hustling towards him. "This could be bad," said Lt. Sara Evans. She turned to the civilians. "The rest of you might want to look away."

Just then, there was a pounding at the access door that let out onto the roof.

OOC: Sorry, it completely forgot about the +10. Is there no time for an aimed shot? Is so, I would rater do one of those to the fast mover. For my roll, I did 1d100-20 since it works out the same as adding 20 to you skills.

As soon as the doors opened, Frank let loose quick, devestating burst from his rifle. Unfortunatly, only one round struck home. The round struck the zombie square in the chest, doing a minimal amount of damage.

Captain Johansen manages to stay calm. He fires a burst at the zombies going completely wide. He quickly keys his radio. Airman Wesson, we have five... six hostiles present in vehicle! We will lead them around, I need you to take them out. He switches the channel to one everyone can hear. There are six, I repeat six hostiles in the Stryker. We will attempt to lure them around so the snipers can take a shot.

OOC,Frank, there was time to fire a single shot rather than a burst, but you already rolled the burst, and it wouldn't be right to go back and make a single shot after knowing what you've rolled. It also does make a difference that the +20 is added to your skill and not subtracted from your roll. You got a roll of 25 out of 90, not 5 out of 70, so it is not an impale. Taking the first 2d8 you rolled for damage means you did 6 to the chest of the fast zombie. Nils, your base skill in Rifle is 30% (really it's 25, but we've been allowing 30 in this game). Firing a burst increases it to 50, but it's a miss either way. Gary, you posted a link to a picture (albeit a nice one), not your roll. I was able to find your roll anyway, so there's no problem.
Outside the clinic-
Frank Hodges and Nils Johansen sprayed lead at the zombies, but in their panic and haste most of the shots went wide. One slug thudded into the fast one's chest, but it didn't even slow down. It doggedly pursued Gary Simpson and Roger Coltrane as they fled. Simpson couldn't run faster than it, but he did run slightly faster than Coltrane. It lunged at the senior airman, but he managed to evade its grasp. The two men ran out into the open, and it followed them. The other five ghouls stumbled along behind it.
OOC,Here's the deal: Captain Johansen and Frank Hodges are far enough from the zombies that they may fire safely this round. They may aim at the head, or fire a burst, but not both. The runner is now a crawler (see below), so it will move slowly. It has taken 28 damage total, so another 22 in general will kill it, as will 10 to the head, of course. The five walkers are undamaged as yet. All six zombies will reach and attack Coltrane and Simpson this round if they do not keep running instead of turning and shooting. The two of them can reach the others this round.
On the fire escape-
David finally stopped weeping and came to his senses.

In the intake area-
Everyone tensed up when they heard gunfire outside and from the roof. "Can we go out there?" asked Catherine Rourke.

"Not without orders," said Lt. Gomez, shivering a little.

On the roof-
Airman Wesson freaked out when he saw the things chasing his comrades below. He was driven over the brink of madness, realizing what must have happened to the SF troopers in the Stryker. In a fit of terror, he bolted for the access door. His partner had a more level head, and he plugged the running corpse in the right leg, severing it neatly. The zombie fell to the ground and dragged itself after its prey.

Lt. Sara Evans stayed calm. She squeezed off two rounds, but they both missed. Luckily, neither bullet struck a friendly.

"Let me out!" shouted Senior Airman Tom Wu from the other side of the access door. "They're after me!" Wesson took out his key and unlocked the door, letting the distraught man sprint onto the roof while Wesson ran past him, inside the building.
OOC,Everyone on the roof, roll Sanity for seeing the zombies. Sanity loss is 0/1d10. Too bad nobody listened to Sara and looked away - especially for Colin, who has a high chance of going off the deep end right now.

Handy,Close but no cigar. Maybe next time hmmm?
He stood at the edge of the roof and said, "If someone does not give me a fucking gun now I will jump and my death and rebirth as a zombie will be on all your heads!"

Frank thumbed the fire selector switch on his rifle and took aim at the head of the nearest zombie. The round struck the abomination cleanly between the eyes. The round blew out a chunk of it's skull, dropping it to the ground in a heap.

OOC: I believe 13 is an impale. If not, I rolled damage twice to easily remove one of the damage amounts if I need to edit.

On the roof-
"Get a grip on yourself, Mr. Lewis!" said Lt. Evans. She saw the two zombies go down in the parking lot below and took aim at a third. She squeezed off two shots, but both went well wide of the mark. "Dammit!" The sniper beside her chambered another bullet in his M-24.

Senior Airman Tom Wu caught a glimpse of the four zombies in the parking lot and was panicked even further. He lost all semblance of rationality and fled in terror. He dropped his M-4 on the roof with a clatter and ran screaming back down the stairs after Airman Wesson.

David climbed up the fire escape and onto the roof, only to see more of the undead below. He gulped in fear, shocked but not broken. Beth stayed calm, knowing she was safe on the roof. Robert was also unfazed, as he usually was. Zorie lost it, almost completely driven mad by the sight. She knew that not even her suit would protect her, and she promptly fainted from shock.

Amanda Deeds reeled, but her continued numbness kept her from being stunned too badly. Lisa Crow shrieked, but recovered quickly. "Colin, listen to Melinda!" she called. "Don't jump! We need you to protect us!" Melinda only barely kept her self-control.
OOC,Colin, you'd better hope there isn't a next time! If there is, you have at least a 99% chance of going permanently insane. Some horrors even cost 1 Sanity point if you succeed. I'm glad you didn't hit zero yet, though. Melinda, you never rolled Sanity, so I rolled for you. If anyone wants to pick up the M-4, there is no time to aim at the head this round. You could fire a regular single shot, or a burst of 3 rounds at +20. If more than one of you goes for the weapon, whoever has the higher DEX gets it first. In the event of a tie, each tied competitor rolls 1d100, and the lowest roll gets it.
In the intake area-
"I don't want to go out there anyway," said Lt. Doolittle with a shiver. "I should be flying a chopper, not stuck here on the ground."

Outside the clinic-
Captain Johansen and Airman Hodges eliminated their targets, but four more were still coming. Coltrane and Simpson retreated past them a few yards and prepared to fire.
OOC,When firing a burst, each bullet has its own separate hit location. It didn't matter this time, as the first bullet alone did more than enough damage to finish the zombie. Gary Simpson, you can fire this round without risk, and so can Roger Coltrane. Frank Hodges and Captain Johansen will be attacked by the surviving zombies if they stay and shoot. If they retreat, Hodges will have to roll DEX x 5 to stay ahead of the pack. Johansen, you have a bullet wound in your leg, so you'll need to roll DEX x 4. If you retreat and fail your DEX roll, roll Dodge just in case.

OOC,If you retreat, you cannot also shoot. In this case that helps you, as you save the bullets. You also cannot run back to the clinic entrance without getting past the zombies, as you've been standing with Hodges some 20 yards away, out in the open so the snipers on the roof could fire (the overhang at the entrance was blocking their line of sight). All entrances except the main one are currently sealed.

On the roof-
The sniper put a bullet in a zombie's skull, but it was only a glancing hit. The bullet creased the back of the creature's head, but it still lumbered on. Sara Evans fired at the same ghoul twice, barely hitting with one shot and finishing it off. Only three remained.

Amanda came to her senses and realized that Keith was heading down the fire escape. "No, Keith, wait!" she called. "It's too dangerous! There's nothing you can do without a gun!"

Colin snatched up the dropped M-4 carbine before anyone else thought to do so. It didn't even seem anyone had noticed him take it. The magazine felt nice and full.
OOC,Colin, you can go ahead and take a shot at a zombie now. It's normal range, with only a -5 penalty for aiming at the head. The damage is 2d8.
On the fire escape-
Keith ran down the fire escape to the landing where he had first entered from the stairwell. The door to the stairs was now locked. The ladder that would let him reach ground level was in the raised position.

In the intake area-
"I guess it's a good thing we're still hearing gunshots," said Lt. Barbara Ellison. "It means they're still alive out there."

Outside the clinic-
Simpson shot one of the zombies in the head, but the bullet merely creased its scalp. Coltrane shot it again and also wounded it lightly, but it kept coming.

Captain Johansen and Frank Hodges ran past the northern edge of the parking lot, leaving the asphalt behind for a grassy area. The three remaining zombies were now only a couple of yards from Simpson and Coltrane. The captain heard Carmichael's reply: "We're already assembling a team to send to the quarantine clinic, but it's going to take a little time to get them ready and suited up. You need to hold the clinic until they arrive, Captain."
OOC,Captain Johansen and Frank Hodges, you can both fire without risk to yourselves this round. However, Simpson and Coltrane are in the line of fire. If you miss, or if you fire a burst and do not hit with all 3 bullets, roll Luck to make sure you don't hit a friendly. Gary Simpson and Roger Coltrane are at point blank range, but have no time to aim at the head and can be attacked by any surviving zombies after they shoot if they stay there. If they retreat, they cannot also shoot, and they will need to roll DEX x 5. If they want to try to get past the zombies and back towards the clinic entrance, they could be attacked and will need to roll Dodge just in case.

Captain Johansen takes aim with the rifle and takes a single shot, missng, luckily also missing the two soldiers. Simpson, Coltrane, get out of there now!

On the groud
Frank took up a shooters stance and fired a round at the head of the zombie closest to Simpson and Coltrane. The round struck home doing massive damage, but not stopping the beast.

On the Fire Escape-
Keith tried the door and found it locked. He yelled up to the others: " Get me a key to this door, someone!"

Handy,I was not really thinking of shooting a zombie. I figure Colin is far gone at this point and since he is seeing everything around him as an enemy he may just shoot what ever he can and go out in a blaze of glory. What say you?

OOC,I forgot to roll for Coltrane and Simpson's shots in my last update. I don't have time tonight, but I'll edit them in tomorrow night. Keith, if you want to get down to ground level, you can simply lower the ladder and climb down.
Colin Lewis,That's close to what I was going to have him do if he had hit 0 Sanity. However, if you have even 1 point of Sanity left - and you do - you are still yourself and have a grip on reality, however tenuous it may be. If you really want to have him do that I can't stop you, but he currently is not suffering from temporary insanity, and his indefinite insanity will at worst make him think he's back in Iraq. He still knows who his friends are, so he probably wouldn't shoot them. If he did shoot and kill someone living, that would cost him his last Sanity point. He could also shoot himself if he wants. However, you shouldn't just throw your character away. He may have 1 Sanity, but there is still much he can do. After this encounter, he may be able to avoid further Sanity losses and can still participate in the adventure. He'll just need to be careful, as he is hanging on by the slenderest of threads.

On the roof-
Lt. Sara Evans fired twice more, hitting a zombie with both bullets, though one of them only barely hit. She finished off the ghoul that Coltrane and Simpson had wounded. The sniper ejected the spent shell and worked the lever, chambering his next bullet.

"Be careful!" shouted Amanda.
OOC,Colin Lewis, you may shoot if you wish. If you shoot at a zombie and miss, or if you fire a burst and don't hit with all 3 bullets, roll Luck. If you aim at the head, the zombies will be able to attack before you fire. One zombie has not been hurt. The other zombie has taken 9 damage to the head and needs 1 more to finish it (or 31 total).
On the fire escape-
Melinda joined Keith on the fire escape's lower landing. The ladder could easily be dropped to the ground if they wished, but only one of them would be able to climb it at a time.

In the intake area-
"I just want it to be over," muttered Lt. Rebecca Doolittle.

Outside the clinic-
Simpson retreated from the two remaining zombies, one of which was just crawling. He nearly tripped when he crossed onto the grass, but he managed to keep his feet. Coltrane wasn't so lucky, and he stumbled and fell. The one stroke of luck was that the fall did not hurt him, the soft grass cushioning his landing.

However, the zombies were now upon him. They too slipped on the grass and were unable to grab or bite him.
OOC,Hodges, Johansen, and Simpson, you may each fire.

OOC: Is is pollible to grab Coltrane by the back of his shirt and drag he him out of harms way? Hodges would use all of his actions this round to do that if he can. The goal would be to get Hodges and Coltrane out of range so neither gets attacked this round. Even better would be to drag him back with one hand, while Hodges holds his pistol in the other to try and defend the two of them. Let me know what the options are for soemthing like this."

OOC,You're already some yards past where Coltrane is lying. You can go run back there and help him to safety, but this means you will both be open to attack this round and you will not also be able to attack. However, it means that you can make yourself the target instead of Coltrane if you wish. You will get to roll Dodge against any attacks that would hit you. You would be better off carrying your commando knife in one hand instead of the pistol, as it can be used to parry a Bite attack. However, you'll have to declare which zombie you want to try to parry in your post: the crawling zombie with 9 damage to the head, or the walking one that hasn't been hurt yet.

OOC: Are we point blank with our rifles at this distance? If so, I will update my post.
Hoping to help Coltrane out, Hodges raises his rifle and fires at the walking zombie and misses. Luckily, he did not hit Coltrane.

On the fire escape-
"Fuck it!" Keith says. He lowers the ladder and begins to climb down. "Stay here, Melinda and pull the ladder up behind me! Be prepared to lower it if needed. I will be right back."

On the roof-
Sara fired at the crawling zombie, scoring a very accurate hit that blew out its guts, but did not stop it. The sniper put a bullet in the other zombie, drilling a big hole cleanly through its skull and snuffing out its unlife.
OOC,There was no need to roll for Colin's shot. The others went first since you aimed at the head, and they managed to finish the zombies with lucky shots.
On the fire escape-
Keith climbed down to the ground, leaving Melinda on the bottom fire escape landing one floor up.

In the intake area-
"I just wish I had something to shoot at," grumbled Catherine Rourke.

Outside the clinic, south side-
Keith reached the bottom of the ladder. He couldn't see what was going on around the corner.

Outside the clinic-
Simpson shot the crawling zombie, putting a round in its skull and stopping it for good before it could chew on Coltrane, who dragged himself back to his feet and caught his breath.

Frank motioned towards the Stryker as he looked to the Captain: "Shall we?"
Frank also did a mental count of the rounds left in his magazine.

On the roof-
Sara breathed a sigh of relief and turned around to see Colin toting the M-4. "Sir, give me that weapon," she said.

The sniper looked around carefully in all directions. "Looks like we're clear," he reported over the radio. "Wesson bolted inside, and Senior Airman Wu followed him. I don't know where they are now. Lt. Evans is still up here, but a couple of the civilians went down the fire escape, and one of the ones on the roof picked up Wu's dropped weapon."

On the fire escape-
Melinda climbed down to ground level.
OOC,I'm assuming you're still climbing down as you stated earlier, as I waited a day and you did not change your action, though you did log in. If you'd rather wait on the landing, please let me know and I'll edit.
Outside the clinic-
Johansen, Coltrane, Hodges, and Simpson made their way back across the parking lot until they could see inside the Stryker. There was nobody else within it, either living or undead. The SFs M-16s were inside the crew compartment, as they had dropped them when they died in the crash. Hodges still had a 3/4-full magazine.

Keith came racing from around the southwest corner and hurried past the entrance.

In the intake area-
The gunfire had stopped, but the people standing guard with their weapons trained on the entrance were still jumpy. When Keith came rushing by without warning, they reacted instinctively. Lt. Doolittle was about to open fire with her MP-5, but she recognized the fact that Keith was alive. "Hold your fire!" she cried. But Lt. Barbara Ellison had already fired a shot, mistaking the speedy blur for another zombie and acting on instinct in a split second. Her aim was perfect, and the bullet struck him right between the eyes, knocking him off his feet.
OOC,Keith, roll CON x 5 to stay conscious.

Tell him if he doesn't give it back he will be punished severely. Hodges, get back there and help them regroup. Simpson go assist Lt. Evans. "One of the civilians came running past the entrance...I thought he was one of those things. I think he'll live, but he could use your help, sir." Lt. Gomez was well past her and already out the door.

OOC,If you were running to that side of the building, I'm afraid you'd still have crossed the line of fire. The main entrance leading to the intake area is on the west side, at the southwest corner of the building. You would have run past it after rounding the corner, and the failed Luck roll is enough to ensure you'd be considered as a target. The natural 1 will hit no matter what the circumstances, provided you're visible. The difference is that you fell outside the entrance instead of inside of it. Keith, you can go ahead and roll CON x 5. Captain Johansen, Gary Simpson, and Frank Hodges (and Keith, if you stay conscious), you may roll First Aid or Medicine this round if you wish to treat his wound. If one of you succeeds, roll 1d3 to see how many HP he gets back. Only one success can restore HP for each skill, so you might want to have Hodges roll First Aid first, and then Johansen can try Medicine if the first roll succeeds, or First Aid if it fails. Lt. Gomez has also made it outside and will be able to help in my next update. And Melinda, you can go ahead and say your line.

On the roof-
"Keith!" screamed Amanda. She hurried down the fire escape towards her son. Robert and Beth went with her.

"Girly?!" said Sara. "Look, Mr. Lewis, what happened down there was a terrible accident. Nobody is intentionally shooting civilians. I must remind you that you are under military command, and I am giving you a direct order to surrender your weapon. If you do not comply, you will be severely punished." She spoke into her radio. "Sir, he says he will only give it up when he is dead, and he will take people with him before he goes. I don't think he's all that stable, sir. What are your orders if he continues to refuse?"

The remaining sniper looked nervously at Colin, holding his M-24 ready but not yet pointing it at him.

On the fire escape-
Amanda, Robert, and Beth reached the landing. "I'm sure they can save him," said Beth, putting a comforting hand on the old woman's shoulder.

"I hope so," replied Amanda, "but they can't even save themselves, it seems."

"It's just as well we got out of there," said Robert. "This could end very badly."

In the intake area-
Barbara raced outside, putting her pistol on safety and back in her holster.

Outside the clinic-
Lt. Gomez joined the captain and tried to help him with Keith. "I don't think I'm good enough to remove the bullet, sir," he said. "I wouldn't advise moving him yet." Barbara hurried up to join him, out of breath. "I'm so sorry," she said, kneeling beside Keith. "I thought you were one of them. I'm going to try to make it right." Melinda arrived as well. "Ma'am, I'm sorry. Please give him some space, and give us room to work. We're going to save him."

Coltrane got behind the wheel of the Stryker and shifted the gear into reverse, then backed up. The controls responded slugglishly, but he was still able to drive it slowly. He straightened out the vehicle, shifted into low gear, and pulled forward somewhat, but he had to stop. "The Stryker can still be driven," he said into his radio, "but we can't block off the entrance until Mr. Deeds can be moved out of the way."

Simpson raced around the southeast corner of the building, heading for the fire escape so he could get up to the roof to help Lt. Evans as he'd been ordered.
OOC,Captain Johansen, since your First Aid roll was less than or equal to 1/5 of your skill, Keith got back an extra HP, for a total of 2 so far. You may now roll Medicine to try to extract the bullet and fully treat his wound. If you succeed, roll another 1d3 to see how many additional HP he recovers. Anyone else may try Medicine, but with only a 5% base skill you'd be as likely to hurt as to help. Treating the wound will take multiple turns.

On the roof-
"Understood, sir," replied Sara over the radio. "Does anyone have a portable radio they can lend to Mr. Lewis?" she asks the others. "The captain wants to speak to him."

"Yeah, I've got one," said David. "They gave it to me back at the motel so we could stay in touch with the Air Force people there." He walked carefully over to Colin and offered him the radio. "Here you go."

"Mr. Lewis, please surrender the weapon. It is not your rifle. It belongs to one of our men, and he's going to need it back. If you give it up now, you will not be punished or harmed."

On the fire escape-
Amanda led the way down the ladder to ground level while Robert and Beth waited their turn on the landing.

Outside the clinic-
"I'm so sorry," said Barbara, her eyes filling up with tears. She was unable to wipe them while inside her orange suit. "It was my fault. I should have been more careful. I didn't mean to hurt anyone." She managed to assist Captain Johansen in treating Keith's head wound and extracting the bullet.

"I'll go get a gurney and medical supplies," said Lt. Gomez, rushing back inside.

On the south side of the clinic, Gary Simpson waited for Amanda to reach the ground before moving to the ladder.
OOC,It will take a total of 5 turns for both of you to finish treating Keith. Until then, he should not be moved. This amount of time includes the turn that just ended and the current turn. If Amanda succeeds at her Medicine roll after she arrives, that will shave some time off. You may speak on the radio while working, since it is hands-free.
In the intake area-
Lt. Gomez ran back inside. "We have a civilian with a bullet wound to the head," he told Catherine. "We need a gurney and a cart of emergency supplies, stat!"

"I'm on it!" she said, gathering what he requested.

On the roof-
When Colin still declined to speak to Captain Johansen, the sniper raised his M-24 and took aim at his right arm. David backed away very quickly.

"Colin, please!" begged Lisa Crow. "Just do what they say!"
OOC,Colin, if you wish to shoot at this time, you will not be able to aim at a particular part of someone's body and shoot before the sniper is able to fire, but you can fire first if you roll for a random hit location. You are at normal range, and you may fire either a single shot or a burst of 3 bullets. Firing a burst will give you a +20 bonus to your Rifle skill, and if you hit you'll roll 1d3 to see how many bullets hit. Each bullet gets a separate 1d20 roll on the hit location table.
In the intake area-
Lt. Gomez and Airman Rourke rushed outside with the gurney and the cart.

Outside the clinic-
Lt. Ellison helped Captain Johansen with Keith. It was a delicate operation, but they were making good progress. Lt. Gomez and Airman Rourke arrived with the medical supplies, and Amanda Deeds hurried around the corner. "Keith!" she cried, filled with anguish. She had already lost one son today, and she wasn't about to lose another. "Let me help. I was a battlefield nurse in Vietnam, and I have a lot of experience. And he's the only son I have left."

On the south side of the building, Airman Simpson scrambled up the ladder.

On the fire escape-
Gary Simpson clambered onto the landing, where Robert and Beth stood.

On the roof-
"On my way, sir," said Sara Evans. She hurried to the fire escape and began climbing down the ladder.

On the fire escape-
"Hold it!" said Gary Simpson, grabbing for Colin as he tried to get past him and climb down to ground level. Lt. Evans was climbing down the ladder from the roof to the landing. Robert and Beth tried to stay out of everyone's way.
OOC,Gary Simpson succeeded at a Grapple roll (40% roll vs. 45% skill). Colin, if you want to resist, you may attempt to parry his Grapple with a Grapple of your own. If that fails, you may choose to try a Dodge roll. If you decide not to try to Dodge, you may make an unarmed attack instead. If you hit and he fails to parry, you'll break his grip. If you're trying a punch or a head butt, you may make this a knockout attempt. If you successfully parry or dodge, you break his hold and could have gotten down the ladder if you wish, in which case you can make it to the west side of the clinic this round. You may also choose to remain on the landing and make an attack of your own. Since you and Gary Simpson both have the same DEX, roll 1d100 for initiative to see who goes first. I rolled for Gary and got a 53, so if you roll less than that, you can go ahead and make a second action before he gets to act. If you roll more, you'll have to wait until he goes again after taking your first action. If you roll exactly 53, roll another 1d100 and I'll reroll for him.
Outside the clinic-
"It was my fault," said Lt. Ellison, shaking her head as she helped Captain Johansen. "I'm sorry, ma'am. I thought he was one of them."
OOC,It will take one more turn to finish treating Keith to the point where he can be moved.

Captain Johansen turns to Airman Hodges. Airman, I'm really getting tired of this shit. Our orders are to keep the civilians here and keep them safe. They have been safe, the only injuries coming when they didn't listen to instructions. I'm not going to let these people wander out and get killed. Do something useful and go and help Lt. Evans with Mr. Lewis. Please.

"You're more delusional than I thought if you really think you can protect them by shepparding them into a room and making them wait around as we are attacked again and again." Frank shot back. "These people want to fight! They want to protect themselves and even help to protect us. They've lost everything they have, including family, and you're taking away the one thing they have right now: their ability to fight back."

Hmm, let's see. Oh, the first thing one of them did when he got a gun was point it at my soldiers. When they disobeyed orders and tried to flee, they got hurt by their own actions. We've not lost a single civilian, a bit more than I can say about you and your team.

"Disobeyed orders?" Frank says back incredulously. "The are civillians. They don't have to obey shit otehr than their survival instincts. You are the only one here hanging onto the term 'orders' like a child with their god damn blankie. Keep sucking your thumb and snuggling with your 'orders', while the rest of us fight for our lives. While you are at it, maybe you should try and order those zombies out there to stop attacking?"

Frank turns away in disgust, then looks back: "Oh, and your right about one thing. When one of the civillians tried to flee the prison camp you are running here, one of your men shot them. Way to instil confidence in them.....sir."

Frank walked to the Stryker and got inside to gatehr up the weapons from the fallen soldiers.

On the roof-
The sniper was so intent on watching the scene unfolding below that he did not hear his partner returning until he was right up next to him. "I'm back," said Airman Wesson. "I'm sorry about what happened earlier."

The other sniper almost jumped out of his skin. "Jeez, don't do that!" he said. "I could have shot you! Captain Johansen still might. Where's Sernior Airman Wu?"

"Dunno. I didn't see him."

On the fire escape-
Gary Simpson hustled down the ladder to the ground in pursuit of Colin Lewis. "I tried to stop him, but he got past me, sir!" he said into his radio. "He's coming your way!"

Lt. Sara Evans waited her turn to climb. "You two had better get back up to the roof," she said to Robert and Beth. "You'll be safe there now." Beth nodded and went back up.

Outside the clinic-
Frank Hodges climbed into the back of the Stryker. The SFs had indeed dropped their M-16s when they died, and three of the weapons had survived the crash intact. All were fully loaded, though any spare magazines would be on the bodies of the orange-suited zombies they had killed.

"I'm sorry, Airman," called Lt. Ellison. "I didn't think he was trying to escape. I thought he was one of those things, and that all the civilians were supposed to be safe on the roof." She helped Captain Johansen finish stitching up Keith's head wound. "You're going to be okay," she told him. Keith was starting to feel a little better, and while he was still badly hurt, he would be able to move safely now.

"Thank you for saving my son's life," said Amanda, tears of gratitude and relief in her eyes. "I know you didn't mean to hurt him." She squeezed Keith's hand. "Son, Melinda and I are both here. You're going to be fine."

Colin Lewis came running around the corner, heading for Captain Johansen. Lt. Gomez and Airman Rourke both moved to intercept him. Gomez barely got his hands on him, and Catherine Rourke took hold of him too.
OOC,Colin, you may attempt to parry one and only one of the two Grapple attacks that succeeded against you with a Grapple roll of your own. You may attempt to Dodge both attacks, in addition to the parry attempt. Then you will get to act in the round that's just starting. Since it's a new round, you may attack even if you tried to Dodge here, but you will not then be able to attempt a Dodge roll later in this round.

On the ground -
Keith blinked a few times and reached up to rub his head. " Son of a bitch!" he said. " I guess this is what happens when.... awe, fuck it..." He looked around, saw his girlfriend and mother and reached out for the two of them. He squeezed their hands: "I'm sorry. To both of you. I won't run off like that again."

In the back of the Stryker
Frank collected the three riffles and shouldered them. He then drew his pistol and put bullets in the head of each of the dead soldiers in the Stryker.

On the fire escape-
Robert followed Beth back up to the roof, while Sara continued down to the ground.

On the roof-
Robert and Beth returned to the roof and rejoined the other civilians. The two snipers looked around in all directions.

"Is it safe to go back inside yet?" asked Zorie Spooner.

"Dunno, ma'am," said Airman Wesson. "We'll have to wait for the captain to give the all clear. At least there are no other threats that we can see."

"It's the ones we can't see that worry me," said Lisa.

Outside the clinic-
"That's good to hear, Captain," said Lt. Colonel Carmichael over the radio. "Your reinforcements just left HQ and are on their way now. ETA is approximately one minute. How minimal were your casualties? Who are they, and what happened to them? Was anyone bitten?"

Frank Hodges collected the dropped M-16s. He now had four of them, including the one he had started with. It was awkward, but he was able to carry them slung on his back and over his shoulders, though the extra burden did make his injuries feel worse. He also felt more fatigued than usual following the battle. He went over to the driver's seat of the Stryker, where Senior Airman Roger Coltrane was still sitting. Hodges remembered that the Stryker could still be driven, though not very well. It would need extensive repairs before it could perform the way it used to. "Let's get everyone inside," said Coltrane. "Then I can use the vehicle to block up the entrance, with the machine gun pointed outwards in case any more of them attack."

"All right," said Amanda. She helped her son to his feet and put an arm around him. "Melinda, help me get Keith inside."

"I'm really sorry," said Lt. Barbara Ellison again.

"Sir, you are under military command, remember?" said Lt. Gomez to Colin. "That was a condition of your admittance to the base. Yet you continue to disobey orders. We can't have people who might be infected wandering around the base. Once you've been screened, then you'll be assigned duties and issued equipment if you're deemed able to work. If any civilian still wishes to leave the base, you will be allowed to do so - under controlled conditions. Once the clinic is under control and secure again, an escort can take you back out through the gate, but I seriously advise against it. This is the only safe place. Airman, please restrain Mr. Lewis."

"Yes, sir," said Catherine Rourke. Though she was stronger than most women, Colin was stronger still. She maintained her grip, but could not keep the struggling man immobile.

Lt. Ellison tried to help out, but she couldn't get a hold of Colin. Lt. Gomez couldn't get his hands on him either. Airman Gary Simpson arrived from around the corner and started coming up behind him slowly.
OOC,The Resistance Table roll should actually have been STR vs. STR, but it still failed. Airman Rourke is still holding onto Colin Lewis. He cannot move freely, but she will allow him to go back inside if he gives in - she will not, however, release him. The only way to get her to let go at this point is to knock her out, do something that would force her to release you, or otherwise disable her (or kill her, but that's probably not a good idea even if you could pull it off). Roll 1d100 to see if you get to act before Gary Simpson does. If you get less than 78, go ahead and act. If you roll 79 or more, you must wait for him (unless you give up). If you roll 78 exactly, roll 1d100 again and I'll reroll for him.

Colin Lewis,No, Captain Johansen did not approach you, and Catherine Rourke is holding onto you to hold you back. You could attack her, and it doesn't have to be a kick. You can still punch, as your arms are not yet successfully restrained. A punch can be a knockout attempt if you specify that, but a kick cannot. Your target will get a chance to parry and/or dodge even if you succeed. Remember that if your attack roll hits and it's less than or equal to your Martial Arts skill, you do twice as many dice damage (but the damage bonus is not doubled). Thus, a punch does 2d3+1d6 and a kick does 3d6. You may also attack anyone else who tried to grab you last round, but that would be of limited benefit, as Catherine would still be holding you.

Frank exited the Stryker. He moved at a normal, non hurried pace. He'd given up fighting. Arguing. He was done with all of this. He walked towards Johansen and began to walk back to the clinic but made sure to walk between Johansen and Colin. As he did, he said in a flat tone: "Put your gun down, Nils. We have work to do."

Colin said, "Your not locking me up. Your giving me a weapon or your shooting me but your not going to fucking lock me up!" With that he spun kicked at Catherine Rouke with his Martial Arts skill and hit her doing some bad damage.

Re: IC-GOLD-Once More Into the Breach(Everyone else)

Posted: Thu Dec 17, 2009 4:43 am
by Mr. Handy
OOC,That's actually a miss, since your Kick skill is only the base of 25%. Your Martial Arts skill being higher doesn't help you any, but it means that any hit does the extra damage. It's for the best that you missed, or you probably would have killed her.
On the roof-
When they saw the scuffle breaking out below, both snipers raised their rifles and drew a bead on Colin Lewis. From the roof, they could also see a Stryker approaching from the north, but their attention was elsewhere.

Outside the clinic-
"Thank you, Captain," replied Lt. Colonel Carmichael on the radio. "Keep me posted. Carmichael out."

Lt. Sara Evans rushed around the southeast corner in time to see Colin struggling.

"Take him down!" cried Catherine. Lt. Ellison was slow to react, taken by surprise.

Another Stryker, this one undamaged, appeared in the distance to the north. It would arrive in a minute or so.
OOC,We're in combat now. Colin Lewis has already acted, but he still has his parry. He is unarmed, so he can only parry other unarmed attacks using any of his unarmed attack forms. Fist/Punch is the best one to use, at 50% base skill. He has Martial Arts, so he does not need to declare who to parry until the attack actually succeeds. He cannot Dodge because he attacked. Frank Hodges has already acted by emerging from the Stryker and getting in the line of fire, but Keith and Melinda both go on DEX 15. Each of you roll initiative on 1d100 to see who goes first. Captain Johansen is going to have to wait a while, as he has DEX 9. Barbara Ellison will go after both of the others on DEX 15 unless you roll a 99 (in which case we'll roll off) or 100.

OOC,Yes, Keith may move freely. So may Melinda. Both of you need to roll 1d100. As long as you roll 98 or less, you can go ahead and act. I don't think it matters whether Keith or Melinda goes first, as I doubt you'll interfere with each other, so you can just go ahead and post your action if you don't get a 99 or 100.

Rubbing his head, Keith sat up, then stood."Ugh. Fuck. This hurts." He leaned on Melinda for support.

OOC,There's still no action for Melinda, so I'm going to go ahead and continue the round. Melinda is still free to act, and I'll consider her to have held her action. After that it will be Captain Johansen's turn. He can get one shot off by sidestepping, but if he misses, he'll need to roll Luck to avoid hitting a friendly. Everyone who has already acted must still wait. Colin, you may attempt to parry one (and only one) unarmed attack that would hit you. You attacked, so you cannot Dodge. Go ahead and choose which attack you want to parry, then roll it. Fist/Punch has a base skill of 50%, so that's what you'll be using to parry anything but a Grapple (which can only be parried with another Grapple roll). If you do not successfully parry Gary, you will be successfully immoblized and will be unable to stop Lt. Gomez from injecting you. The injection cannot be parried while unarmed, as the syringe counts as an armed attack.
Outside the clinic-
Lt. Barbara Ellison swung her fist right at Colin, and then Gary Simpson came up behind him and seized him in a bear hug. He and Catherine Rourke struggled to hold him still while Lt. Gomez took a syringe out of his medical kit. "Stop fighting," he told Colin as he advanced on him. "I'm going to have to sedate you."

Nor could he stop Lt. Gomez. The nurse found a good vein in Colin's arm, pressed the needle into it, and pushed home the plunger. Colin could feel the contents of the syringe flowing into his bloodstream.
