IC-GOLD-Once More Into the Breach(Everyone else)

As day gives way to night, time may be running out for the human race. Warren Air Force Base is still in human hands, but there is a crisis within and what's left of the world risks plunging into nuclear chaos. A small group of captive women hopes desperately to escape from their cruel captors, while another woman is undercover amongst them. Two park rangers at a station near Chimney Rock prepare to weather the night. In a convenience store south of Ogallala, tensions are high as employees, survivors, and criminals try to survive the night. In Omaha, scientists may have won humanity a reprieve, but at a high cost. The zombie outbreak appears to have ended there, but there are still dangers. Will Omaha be a bastion for survivors, or will it descend into anarchy?

IC-GOLD-Once More Into the Breach(Everyone else)

Post by Mr. Handy »

Z-Day - 2:55 PM Mountain Time - Warren Air Force Base, west of Cheyenne, Wyoming
On the roof-
Lt. Sara Evans looked on in horror as the Stryker containing the quarantine clinic's reinforcements collided with the west wall of the building at an angle at high speed. With a screech of metal, it slid south along the wall and gradually coasted to a halt just outside the main entrance, the collision robbing it of its momentum. The overhang above the entrance blocked the head nurse's view of the vehicle. The two snipers stood beside her with their M-24 rifles held ready, but they no longer had any targets to shoot.

Behind them stood the civilians. Robert and Beth, a young couple who had passed through the T-Bone, had been the first to arrive at Warren Air Force Base. Zorie Spooner had come from the base to the motel across from the T-Bone with Captain Lereux's team. She was a civilian, and the sole survivor of that ill-fated group. Even so, she had been badly injured in another car crash on her way here. As a medical researcher, her skills were proving very useful for treating her fellow survivors. So were those of Amanda Deeds, a U.S. Navy nurse who had served in Vietnam and was now over sixty years old. She was a recent widow, having lost her husband Clarence and one of her sons when the motel was attacked by a gigantic worm-like creature and a wave of zombies. Currently she was numb with shock. Her surviving son, Keith Deeds, was a skilled mechanic and recently discharged Marine. Together they led what was left of the Rough Riders Motorcycle Club, composed largely of veterans. Lisa Crow, the girlfriend of his late brother, was part of the group, as was his own sweetheart Melinda Christie, a public relations specialist he had rescued from Cabela's headquarters back in Sidney, Nebraska. The last member of their group was Colin Lewis, an Iraq vet who had been suffering from post-traumatic stress even before today. Now he was barely clinging to the tattered remnants of his psyche.

On the fire escape-
David knelt on the fire escape landing, sobbing uncontrollably.

In the stairwell-
Senior Airman Tom Wu, still terror-stricken, ran into the stairwell and started up the stairs.

In the intake area-
The USAF personnel in the intake area heard the crash and were briefly stunned. Lt. Rebecca Doolittle, the co-pilot who had survived both a helicoper crash and the siege of the motel stood in shock. Lt. Barbara Ellison, one of the nurses, turned to Captain Nils Johansen, the doctor in command of the quarantine clinic. "Sir, what are your orders?" she asked. Captain Johansen was the only surviving doctor in the clinic. He had accidentally shot Major Jaclyn MacPherson twice with his own sidearm, and he had wounded himself once in the leg as well with a ricochet. Captain Isaac Drake lay dead in the vestibule, having been gunned down by the SF troopers guarding the entrance when he tried to break quarantine in his panic. Those SF troopers themselves had been slain and had risen up to attack the living, but they had already been taken down with bullets to the head.

The rest of the quarantine clinic staff stood ready for their captain's orders too. Lt. Oscar Gomez was the other nurse present, and there were also two of the orderlies: the gung-ho Airman Catherine Rourke and the tall Airman Gary Simpson. Also present were Senior Airman Roger Coltrane and Airman Frank Hodges, both survivors of the downed helicopter and the battle at the motel. Frank Hodges could feel his injured arm throbbing with pain.
Airman Frank Hodges,Frank could also feel his head starting to burn up, and he knew he was getting feverish. He was still unimpaired, but he was also aware that he would not stay that way.

Captain Johansen runs a hand through his hair. Lt. Gomez, Airman Rourke, stay here. Airman Simpson, Coltrane, Hodges, you're with me. We're going to see if anyone made it alive and what condition they are in. Understood? He keyed his radio. Wesson, I want you to make sure no infected are incoming. We're going to check the Stryker. Lt. Evans, if you see Simpson relieve him of his weapon. He checked his M9 and began to advance towards the downed vehicle carefully, weapon raised.

"I'm on your six, sir" Frank said as he shouldered his weapon. "Sir, things are going to hell on us. There are some capable soldiers among the civilians that we could could sure use to cover our six. I'd feel a whole lot better knowing that they were down here with these weapons " he says as me motions to the weapons of the fallen guards, " coving our asses. I have a bad feeling that Stryker did not have a mechanical failure. Permission to request their aid?"

Captain Johansen shook his head. I'm sorry airman, I have my orders. Though, with the loss of Simpson and the crash perhaps Carmichael could be convinced otherwise. He keyed his radio again. Lieutenant Colonel, this is Captain Nils Johansen. A Stryker hit the side of the wall after we dealt with the attackers. Condition unknown. One of my Airmen is running towards the roof screaming, and both security forces soldiers are dead. Requesting permission to arm the civilians.

On the roof:
Keith moved towards the edge of the roof, and looked over the edge where the striker stuck the building. "I've got a bad feeling about this.." he said to no one in particular.

On the roof-
"Roger that, sir," replied Sara on her radio as she joined Keith at the edge of the roof. Peering down over the side, they could see that the concrete wall had held up under the impact of the Stryker colliding with it at high speed. The vehicle, on the other hand, had to be in bad shape. They couldn't actually see it, however, as it had stopped beneath the overhang. This was probably merciful, as the sight couldn't have been a pretty one.

"All clear as far as I can see, sir," said Airman Wesson into his mic. He and his fellow sniper looked around in all directions.

On the fire escape-
David kept weeping, oblivious to his surroundings.

In the stairwell-
Tom Wu ran up the stairs two at a time. When he reached the first landing, he tried the fire escape door, only to find that Sara had locked it behind her. Filled with panic, he continued running upstairs.

In the intake area-
Simpson and Coltrane followed Johansen and Hodges outside while the others held their ground.

"Some people get to have all the fun, huh?" said Catherine Rourke.

Outside the clinic-
Captain Johansen approached the Stryker with Frank Hodges, Roger Coltrane, and Gary Simpson. The vehicle had been badly damaged, its armored front and side dented and mangled from when it had rammed into and scraped against the wall. The armored personnel carrier was beneath the overhang and had stopped a few feet short of being visible from the vestibule door. The fallen SF troopers' M-16s lay discarded out here, though the bodies in the intake area still had their sidearms in their belt holsters. It was impossible to see into the interior without opening the hatches. The main hatch to the crew compartment was in the rear.

"Negative on that, Captain," replied Carmichael. "We've been through this before, and you know our orders. It isn't my call. You said you've dealt with the attackers with the people you've got, and we're going to send some more Security Forces as well as another doctor. Some of those reinforcements are in that Stryker. Find out their condition and render them whatever medical assistance you can."
OOC,It's Wu who went crazy and ran away, not Simpson. His player hasn't posted yet, but I'm assuming his character obeys your orders, Captain Johansen. Carmichael won't disobey orders, but roll Persuade if you want to try to convince him to go to his superiors and ask them to change their minds.

Colin still squatted on the roof top. In his mind ran the words of a prayer his old Catholic priest often prayed. He began to mutter it outloud, "Non nobis, non nobis, Domine Sed nomini tuo da gloriam" over and over again and again.

Simpson hesitated slightly as the approached the Stryker, and glanced around at his comrades.

"With all due respect, sir, they're wasted. Let's just go back inside and dig in." He was unable to keep a nervy tremor from his voice.

Captain Johansen frowns. Lieutenant Colonel... He trails off. Nevermind, sir. He approaches the Stryker, pistol aimed ahead and knocks on the side. Is anyone alive in there? This is Captain Johansen, please respond if you can hear me!

"This is FUBAR" Frank says is disbelief. "The world has gone to hell and you all are clinging to your 'orders' like a child to his security blanket. Well, guess what, your 'orders' can't watch your back and put a bullet into the head of a zombie who's bearing down on you. Either they are all dead or unconscious in there. Can you hear anything inside?"
Frank keeps a safe distance of about 20 yards from the read of the Stryker with his gun trained on the doors. He keys his mic: "Snipers, watch our six while were exposed out here, okay?"

On the roof-
"We've got your six," replied Airman Wesson on the radio. He, his fellow sniper, and the others up on the roof could see Airman Frank Hodges moving out from beneath the overhang. "I see you down there, but I don't have eyeball on the Stryker. If it all goes south, retreat away from it to draw the hostiles out."

Lt. Sara Evans joined the snipers, her pistol at the ready, hoping she wouldn't need to use it.

On the fire escape-
David continued to cry like a baby.

In the stairwell-
Tom Wu reached the second floor landing and tried the fire escape door there, but it was locked too. Screaming in terror, he started running up the next flight of stairs.

In the intake area-
"Hang tight, everyone," said Lt. Barbara Ellison.

"The waiting's the worst part, ma'am," said Airman Rourke. "Part of me wishes something would just happen already."

"You don't really mean that, do you?!" said Lt. Rebecca Doolittle, trembling with fear.

Outside the clinic-
There was no reply to the captain's knock from within the Stryker. Senior Airman Roger Coltrane cautiously appraoched the rear hatch, his rifle at the ready. "Shall I open the hatch, sir?" he asked.

"Roger, that" Frank said to the snipers. He trained his rifle on the door of the striker: preparing for the doors to open.
"We better do it fast before the dead and wounded rise up and turn."

Captain Johansen scoops one of the SF Trooper's rifle's from the floor and checks to see if it will still function. He holsters his pistol and aims the rifle at the hatch . Affirmative Airman. Open it and retreat as fast as possible, make them come to us.

Outside the clinic-
The M-16 that Captain Johansen picked up didn't feel too heavy in his hands. The magazine was about half full. He didn't have much experience with rifles, but he wasn't such a great shot with a pistol either - the death of Major MacPherson and the wound in his leg were constant reminders of that fact.

"Yes, sir," said Senior Airman Roger Coltrane. He opened up the hatch and glanced inside, shocked at the sight. The five orange-suited SF troopers in the rear compartment of the Stryker had been tossed around like rag dolls. He didn't have to be a doctor to know that they were all dead, their bodies mangled and their faceplates smashed by the high-speed impact with the wall. The driver was equally deceased, thrown forward against the dashboard at the moment of the crash.

As if that weren't bad enough, the bodies began to stir and rise, heading for the nearest source of food - Coltrane. Most of them slowly dragged themselves across the compartment, but one was moving very quickly indeed. The sight was too much for him, and his mind broke. but at least he had the presence of mind to fall back. The one ghoul was faster, and it almost bit him, only to stumble to the pavement at his feet right before it would have. He retreated towards Frank Hodges as the rest of the dead emerged from the wrecked vehicle.
OOC,Captain Johansen, Airman Hodges, and Airman SImpson, all of you roll Sanity. Sanity loss is 0/1d10. If you remain sane, you may then take one shot with your readied rifle. It may be a burst, but remember that bursts cannot be aimed at the head. They do give you a +20 to hit, and if you do hit, roll 1d3 to see how many bullets connect. For each bullet, roll a random hit location on 1d20 as well as separate damage of 2d8. Single shots aimed at the head have the standard -5 penalty. All of you are at normal range except for Airman Simpson. Since he did not move away from the Stryker, he is at point blank range. However, this also means that he will be attacked by the remaining zombies after the shots are resolved if he stays and shoots. If he retreats (whether inside the building or into the parking lot), only the fast-moving zombie will be able to attack him after the shots are resolved, unless it is destroyed first.
On the fire escape-
David cried and cried and cried, oblivious to what was happening around the corner.

In the stairwell-
Tom Wu raced up the stairs in sheer terror.

In the intake area-
"Stay frosty," said Catherine Rourke, keeping her weapon trained on the exit.

On the roof-
Nobody on the roof could see what was happening beneath the overhang, nor were any targets visible. They were able to see Frank Hodges standing in the parking lot below, as well as a terrified Roger Coltrane hustling towards him. "This could be bad," said Lt. Sara Evans. She turned to the civilians. "The rest of you might want to look away."

Just then, there was a pounding at the access door that let out onto the roof.

OOC: Sorry, it completely forgot about the +10. Is there no time for an aimed shot? Is so, I would rater do one of those to the fast mover. For my roll, I did 1d100-20 since it works out the same as adding 20 to you skills.

As soon as the doors opened, Frank let loose quick, devestating burst from his rifle. Unfortunatly, only one round struck home. The round struck the zombie square in the chest, doing a minimal amount of damage.

Captain Johansen manages to stay calm. He fires a burst at the zombies going completely wide. He quickly keys his radio. Airman Wesson, we have five... six hostiles present in vehicle! We will lead them around, I need you to take them out. He switches the channel to one everyone can hear. There are six, I repeat six hostiles in the Stryker. We will attempt to lure them around so the snipers can take a shot.
