Z-Day - 6:58 PM Mountain Time - Chimney Rock, western Nebraska
Image
In the pickup truck-
Sally sat in the shotgun seat of the pickup truck as the ride north continued. The sun was getting lower and lower in the western sky, and it was now barely above the horizon. Soon it would get dark and they would stop for the night. As awful as the ride had been, it had at least been uneventful, and she dreaded what would come when they stopped. A couple of miles to the north, Chimney Rock was visible in the distance. The unusual rock formation was breathtaking in its beauty.

Mutt was still driving. Just the thought of the skinhead leader near Sally filled her with disgust, and she was relieved that Doc was sitting between them. The white panel van followed the truck. The other three surviving skinheads were in the cab of the van. Ghost was driving, Nitro sat in the middle seat, and Deadeye was riding shotgun with his sniper rifle. Sally also knew that they held four women locked in the back of the van, all of them traumatized first by the skinheads' brutality and then by the shock at seeing what had happened to the outside world. Her thoughts were never far from them, but she still didn't know how she could hope to help them.

Sally was still feeling a little feverish, and she was starting to develop a slight headache. The revelation that something was growing inside her still shook her, and she didn't know what she was going to do about it now that she no longer had access to the X-Ray machine - the one thing that seemed like it could help.

Sally sat in the passenger seat of the truck staring out at the bleak landscape: another day in hell. The world around her was a blur as she recounted the nightmare of the last day. The diner. The carnage. The mines. The worm. The compund....now this. She rolled onward into the night with a group of savages fuel by besital lust and hate; heading towards a larger group of them.
While flesh eating zombies had torn apart many of her friends earlier in the day, the thinking, human monsters she was now with were much more terrifying.

In the pickup truck-
The ride north continued along the bumpy road, and the sun sank even lower. It was now touching the horizon.

"Maybe we'd better find a place to stop soon," said Doc.

"Yeah," said Mutt. He looked around carefully down the road across the flat terrain. "Hey, I see a ranger station up ahead! It's almost a mile away. Elevated, defensible. Looks like there's a ranger up on the roof with a rifle."

Sally's stomach dropped when she heard that a Ranger was at the station. 'One more life in my hands' she thought to herself.
"What's the plan? Surely the Ranger won't be accepting of your harem....or, maybe he will" she said with a laugh.

In the pickup truck-
"No, we won't be telling him about them," said Mutt. "I don't want to risk a confrontation. We've taken too many casualties as it is, and he might not be alone. We'll leave the girls in the van - except Katarina. She can be counted on to keep her mouth shut about the other girls. We're going to stop at the station and ask to stay the night. In the morning, we'll continue on our way."

Doc nodded. "Sounds good to me," he said.

As the pickup truck continued north past a crossroads, Sally was able to make out details of the ranger station. It was in a good defensible position. It was elevated, and the only way to get inside was to climb a steep set of stairs. The building itself was fairly small and square. There was nobody currently on the roof that she could see, though. The road they were on went past the ranger station on the west side, about thirty yards away. Mutt looked back at the van following him and gave Ghost hand signals, gesturing to the northeast. Mutt parked on the east side of the road, close to the ranger station. The van stopped a short distance behind, parking at an angle and facing northeast so that the side door was not visible from the station. The sun sank beneath the horizon to the west.

"We should see about cutting those stairs off of the building, if possible. That way we can rest a little easier."

In the pickup truck-
"Once we all get up there and secure a rope to provide a way back down, that's a good idea," said Mutt. "I'm going to go get Katarina." He shut down the engine, took the keys, opened his door, and stepped outside. Then he walked over to the pickup truck, where Ghost, Deadeye, and Nitro had gotten out. Mutt led Ghost around the van to the side that was hidden from view, the one with the sliding door, while Deadeye helped Nitro hobble over to the pickup truck.

Doc slid across the seat and emerged on the driver's side. He closed the door and walked around the front of the truck, then opened Sally's door and offered her his hand to help her out. Now that she was closer to the ranger station, Sally could see that the stairs were made of wood and led up to a balcony that circled the station itself. The door to the station was opposite the top of the stairs. It would certainly be possible to destroy the stairs, but that would make getting down more problematic for her considering the state of her leg. She also noticed that there were more than a few dead bodies in the area, most of them to the north of the ranger station. They had been shot in the head, primarily with bullets, but a few had arrows sticking out of them.

OOC: Invisible castle is down. I manually rolled dice for listen and got a 27. I can wait for invisible castle to be back up if you'd like.

Sally got out of the van and stumbled into Doc. She fell into him and grabbed him for balance. When she was close to his face, she gently kisses his cheek and whispers to Doc: "We need to let the ranger know what is going on. We can't let those women get to that other compound"

Outside the pickup truck-
Doc nodded, holding Sally tight, but he didn't say anything as Nitro and Deadeye were now too close, other than "Let's go." He helped her walk towards the ranger station. As she went, she could hear the voices of the others back at the van.

"Okay, ladies," said Mutt. "We're stopping for the night. Katarina, come on out. The rest of you girls stay put."

"There is something in the woods, I know there is, it's horrible!" cried Zoe.

"Don't fret," said Ghost, "we're not gonna let anything happen to you."

"I didn't see anything out there," said Mutt. "If you're afraid there is something and you don't want to attract its attention, just keep your voices down and you'll be fine."

"Just relax, Zoe," said Ghost as he slid the door shut. "I'll be back for you after we get settled in."

Ghost then led the way back around to the front of truck, followed by Mutt holding Katarina's arm. They were also heading for the ranger station. Mutt whispered something in Katarina's ear, and she nodded.
