On the road-
Emily turned the CB to the frequency that Kathryn indicated. There was definitely some kind of transmission, but it sounded completely garbled.

Victor was still in pain, but his patch job gave him some relief.

OOC,[b]Kathryn[/b], roll Idea to realize why the signal might be messed up.

On the road

Kat hears the gibberish and realizes...

The years at the airfield had given her quite some knowledge in secret transmissions and protocol over military wavelengths. This was pretty much the same deal.

"This makes no sense... scrambled output...Hold on." Kat closes her eyes to retrieve something from the depths of her mind.

'Are you saying the trasmission is encrypted, Kat? Does that mean that our transmission would be scrambled to them as well?" Emily said.

[Mr. Handy]

Kathryn McCoy,[b]Kathryn[/b] realized that the military communications were encrypted, which was why the signal wasn't intelligible. They might be able to understand her signal on the other end if they were monitoring the frequency and adjusted for the fact that the CB communication isn't encrypted. The helmet radio she had was military hardware, and it probably had the same encryption protocols, so she should have no trouble using it to communicate providing she was in range. It only worked within a few miles.

"Emily, send a message that we are approaching. It will come out scrambled on the other end. But they will pick it up and probably run it through a filter." Kat flips on the comm of the kevlar helmet. "I´ll try this for range, it will be tweaked to the correct protocol. "This is air traffic control officer Kathryn McCoy heading west towards WAFB on I-80. I´m seeking approval to escort a team of survivors to the base. Over." She releases the send button and listens.

"Okay, will do" Emily says. She picks up the CB radio handset and keys the mic: " Warren Airforce Base, we are a group of survivors approaching the base from I-80. May we please take refuge in your base. Over."

[Mr. Handy]

OOC,Actually, you're heading west, not east.

On the road-
After a minute, Emily and the others heard a reply on the CB. "This is Sergeant Bloch," said a man's voice. "I'm sorry, ma'am, but Warren AFB is under lockdown. Nobody is being allowed inside. Some civilians were admitted earlier today, and there were some...incidents. The CO has ordered that nobody else be permitted into the base. Any attempts to approach the base will be met with force. I advise you to find some other shelter and to avoid traveling at night, and especially to get away from I-80. The main highways are extremely unsafe."

Kathryn heard no response on the helmet radio.

"Please, Sgt. I am a mother with two kids. We are low on ammunition and need help." Emily pleaded.

[Dave Syrinx]

"Tell them we have news on what happened to Corporal Anthony Gardner and his team at Kearney Airfield, Nebraska. We are looking for someone transporting a cure for the outbreak, a medivac trrooper pilot, bound for a destination with a formula of a vaccine. What can they tell us about the situation in Omaha? We´re ten armed civilains seeking refuge and we can defend ourselves. Whatever happened at Warren AFB they might conisder us helping them! We have the means to get them a vaccine. Provided they have radiocommunications with the right people."

Kat rambles on as she hears the response from the base. She flips the comm away and waits fro Emily to paraphrase or lend her the comm unit. "Shit! Give us an alternate route to another base, if nothing else..." She hisses between her teeth.

Adding an extra question for Emily to forward, Kat sighs, "Have they heard of a forwarding radio team at a truck stop in Ogallala? We have information they were sent from WAFB... Could we seek refuge there till we can gain access to WAFB?"

Emily relays all of Kat's data through the radio to the Sgt on the other end of the radio.

[Mr. Handy]

On the road-
"I'm truly sorry, ma'am," replied Sergeant Bloch, "but there's nothing I can do. I have orders from my commanding officer. I could try bumping this up the chain of command, but I wouldn't expect much to come of it. The Air Force has no airbases near Kearney, and I don't know anything about a Corporal Gardner. He's must be in some other branch of the service. The Air Force doesn't have a rank of Corporal. As for Omaha, I know there were some scientists trying to get there, but I don't know if they ever did. This is the first communication from outside we've had in hours. I don't know what the situation in Omaha is, but it must be pretty grim. All of the major cities have been overrun earlier today." He sounded skeptical when Emily mentioned a vaccine. "Ma'am, I don't see how it's possible for a vaccine to have been developed this quickly. We've known nothing about the infection until this morning, and it's like no other disease on Earth. I'm going to need to know exact details about this so-called vaccine and where you got this information."

He paused while Emily mentioned the forward base. "We had a forward base at a truck stop, yes, but it's nowhere near Ogallala. If I were you, I'd avoid it at all costs. It was overrun in the early afternoon, and later chemical weapons were deployed to take it back. The team that went had protective suits, but we lost contact with them shortly after they were inserted. It seems that the communications system has failed. There would still be residual gas in the area, so steer clear of it if you value your lives."

OOC,[b]Emily[/b], roll Persuade if you want to try to convince him about the vaccine, and make sure you give him the details he wants. [b]Kathryn[/b] is free to try too if [b]Emily[/b] lets her use the CB.

Hearing about the ranks and branches, Kat remembers one of thr flyboys, "Senior Airman Harry Flynn - Air National Guard Pilot was one of the men under Gardner´s temporary command." Kat says to Emily. As the situation seems to stand, WAFB is the closest thing to a secure haven. "Omaha is quite a long way to go.
The problem of a possible vaccine in Omaha won´t help the guys at WAFB at once anyway.
It´s a three hour drive and if we use small roads it will take even longer time, but it´d be safer. Try to convinve him to check with his superiors, Em."

You seem to know more about this than I do, Kat. Here, take the CB and see if you can get through to them.

McCoy accepts the comm and says, "Thanks, I met these scientists at the airfield..."

In the microphone Kat attempts to get through to Sgt. Bloch "Sgt Bloch, this is Air traffic controller Kathryn McCoy of Kearney airfield." Then she lowers her voice and tells Sgt Bloch what she knows. "This morning has been chaotic to say the least at Kearney airfield. There has been over a hundred people and several aircraft at the field, but a meteorite came down just before dawn. The captain in charge of the National Guard unit assigned to secure the field eventually ordered a squad to investigate, with disastrous results. The meteorite split open at their approach, and scores of mosquito-like creatures emerged and attacked. The men in the squad were all stung and fell, and the insects moved on to attack others. Many of the survivors fled, taking all but one of the aircraft: a broken-down crop duster stored in Hangar 1 awaiting repairs. The rest, some thirty in number, holed up in the control tower. Those who survived the swarm then were attacked by the people who had been stung. They grabbed and began to eat the survivors, who then became like them.
The only officer, 2nd Lt. George Sullivan, turned into one of the creatures too and was killed. There was a brief struggle for control of the airfield, followed by an uneasy truce. Some took refuge in the control tower. Corporal Gardner had me under gunpoint and Senior Airman Harry Flynn an Air National Guard Pilot helped me flee. A team of scientists left the airfield bound for Omaha, as I said before. They were on the verge on getting a vaccine. I don´t know where they came from... Now we´re stuck here between Omaha and WAFB and your location is really close compared to Omaha. If what you say is true, Omaha won´t be a nice place to head to anyway. We´ll proceed via the back roads and will be at your door in about an hour. That will give you plenty of time to convince your CO. We really just need to get out of this. And we can help. Over." While using the comm, Kat scans the area they have parked on and brings her 9mm up.

OOC,Actually, you're only about 40 miles from Warren AFB, so you could easily be there in less than an hour. Omaha is 400 miles to the east from here, which is at least a 6 or 7 hour drive. Remember that you've gone 30 miles to the west from Ogallala, and are now between Kimball and Sidney, though a few miles south of them.

On the road-
"Well..." said Sergant Bloch, "I can't promise anything, but I'll see what I can do, ma'am. We did speak to a scientist this morning who was bound for Omaha. She said something about having the key to resolving the crisis, but she didn't mention any vaccine. She had some...interesting theories. Some of them have born fruit, but others sound really outlandish. Okay, get on the road and start heading this way, but have an alternative in mind in case you're not allowed inside. You'll want to bypass Cheyenne entirely, as it's still filled with the infected. We're under constant attack here, but the attacks have been getting less intense. Cheyenne may be the biggest city around for quite some ways, but it's not all that big, relatively speaking. There's only so much population. Still, there are plenty left to cause trouble for you if you get too close. Go around far enough to the north or south and make your way to Warren Air Force Base from the west side. Stay on the CB so we can keep in touch, and I can give you specific directions when you get closer."

"Roger. I´ll keep the radio open. Emily Montrose will be in contact with you through the trip. We´re thankful for the help, Sgt Bloch. Over." To Emily, Lauren, Kyle and Victor, Kat recaps, "We have to go wide around Cheyenne. When we have a clear way from the west of WAFB we´ll get further instructions. You guys take the lead and we follow in the Escalade. That way, you´ll have your back covered Victor. We better hurry away from here, this place is not a very good spot to be stuck at, Sgt Bloch made clear." She gives the radio to Emily and hurries back to Joey and the others. Still having her 9mm in a firm grip.
Inside the Escalade she reports, "OK, we have a route to WAFB. We take a wide turn around Cheyenne which is overrun by the infected. Then we´ll get further instruction when we close in on the base from the west. Emily is on the radio with the base as we approach."
