In the pickup truck-
Sally sat in the shotgun seat of the pickup truck as the ride north continued. The sun was getting lower and lower in the western sky, and it was now barely above the horizon. Soon it would get dark and they would stop for the night. As awful as the ride had been, it had at least been uneventful, and she dreaded what would come when they stopped. A couple of miles to the north, Chimney Rock was visible in the distance. The unusual rock formation was breathtaking in its beauty.
Mutt was still driving. Just the thought of the skinhead leader near Sally filled her with disgust, and she was relieved that Doc was sitting between them. The white panel van followed the truck. The other three surviving skinheads were in the cab of the van. Ghost was driving, Nitro sat in the middle seat, and Deadeye was riding shotgun with his sniper rifle. Sally also knew that they held four women locked in the back of the van, all of them traumatized first by the skinheads' brutality and then by the shock at seeing what had happened to the outside world. Her thoughts were never far from them, but she still didn't know how she could hope to help them.
Sally was still feeling a little feverish, and she was starting to develop a slight headache. The revelation that something was growing inside her still shook her, and she didn't know what she was going to do about it now that she no longer had access to the X-Ray machine - the one thing that seemed like it could help.
