Scene 13a: The Chapel of Contemplation

Providence, Rhode Island

After a brief trip Calum, Mike, Andy and Will manage to locate Andrew's acquaintance, Mr. Dooley a local salesman with his ramshackle newspaper cart. Mr. Dooley seems to be in his late 70's, a short man with what's left of his white hair encircling a bald spot that reaches the back of his head. He's dressed well and has a smile for everyone.

What can I do for you Andrew?

A car speeds by and you hear the screech of tires. Karl steps out of the vehicle and advances to the party chatting on the sidewalk, a strong scent of burnt rubber surrounds him.

Karl nods to Mr. Dooley and says "Pardon me..." then addresses his companions, "I was unable to secure outside assistance, but I feel I am well-enough versed in what we need done to get it done." He looked back at Mr. Dooley, who looked like the man was waiting for something and then commented glancing over to the others, "I thought you all would have been knee deep in your studious efforts by now. Are you just getting here?"

Mr. Dooley
The boys seem to be tongue-tied here, but you seem to be a man of words and action, and you all seem to have a problem of some sort as you wouldn't come by here in a heap like this. Let's hear it then.

"Mr. Dooley, I presume?" Karl says stepping forward and extending his hand. "My name is Karl Werner, I publish 'The Seer' magazine." After shaking the man's hand, he clearly sees that the man hasn't heard of his magazine (which is no big surprise - since it has a very small following - not that Karl would admit that), "Oh, you haven't heard of it? Well, no matter."

He withdraws his hand and glances at the others to make sure they were alright before continuing. Then facing Mr. Dooley fully, he says "My friends and I are doing a report on a house nearby. There were many strange happenings at this place over the years... and unfortunately, the newspaper archives aren't all-revealing. So we were hoping someone who has so much experience in the local history such as yourself might be able to help us clear up some matters and tie up some loose ends."

"Have you ever heard of Reverend Michael Thomas, or the Chapel of Contemplation & Church of Our Lord Granter of Secrets?" Karl asks and awaits a reply.

Mr. Dooley seems genuinely sorry that he hasn't heard of Karl's "The Seer".

Hold on a second boys, I need to fetch my remembering device. He chuckles a bit and turns to a kiosque near which you are standing. It's filled with newspapers, cigars and tobacco, apparently the workplace of the old man. It also makes the man's reaction to not having heard of The Seer more genuine.

Mr. Dooley emerges from his kiosque pipe and matches in hand and starts puffing. A large cloud of aromatic smoke follows him for a bit until the pipe is well lit. This takes about two minutes of puffing and re-lighting. He sits down on a large boulder by the sidewalk and enters fierce contemplation, all the while puffing away regularly. The pipe smoke is strangely relaxing and carries a hint of vanilla and berries. After a while Mr. Dooley finally returns to reality.

Well boys, if I'm not mistaken there was something called the Chapel of Contemplation somewhere around these parts. I can't recall the details as it's long gone, but I'd gamble on the fact that it's somewhere in the forest at the end of Narrow Lane. Not much of a forest, but it's a bit hilly, so it might still be hidden there somewhere. That's your best bet I'd warrant. If I recall correctly it went down in a bang, but the story was covered up discretely, you won't find much in the newspapers.

Karl nodded to the man, appreciative for his remembering device. "We are very grateful for that information, Mr. Dooley," Karl says looking to the others and nodding, coaxing them to nod as well. "Do you remember, by chance, who was responsible for the fall of the chapel? And just by chance, do you remember a fellow by the name of Walter Corbitt?"

You're quite welcome, I hope it helps you along.

I can't say that I remember much more. Must have been the law involved since it was hushed. Don't recall any Corbitt chap though.

Nope, all the old guns from around here are long gone, institutionalised most. Must be something in writing that you could find from long ago wherever they keep this sort of stuff.

Karl sighed, "Only place I know to look is the newspaper archives, and we came up pretty empty there. Now maybe if we could find some old diaries, but that would be near impossible." Karl looked down and to the side thoughtfully, then asked the others, "What about that one book we found in the place? Maybe it has information within about this Chapel?"
ooc,I forget who took the book.

ooc,I forget who took the book. A-hah! Karl has it... a diary from W. Corbitt. What a dumb ass I apparently am.
Karl retreated to his car and returned with the book, "Yes, I think maybe we can find more information in here."

On first glance the book is large and rather worn, and looks like it might take a few days to read. Upon inspection it is written in a slightly older version of the English language than currently used. There are some graphs and glyphs and drawings inside as well.

Karl bids Thomas Dooley good day, "That is unless someone else has something they'd like to ask this kind fellow?" He leads them off to a more private place to discuss the diary. "I found this nailed up within a cupboard on our first tour through the house. I meant to mention it earlier, but it had slipped my mind. I think it might be worthwhile to spend a couple days to read through it and help open our eyes to what might be happening." He opened the diary and thumbed through the pages, skimming various paragraphs to get an idea of what might be contained within. "Strange, he included graphs, glyphs and other drawings as well. Obviously this man was into the occult."

Having done a quick skim through the book, he offered it to the others, should they be curious as well. "Maybe we should go back to the house and read. There could be mention of markers we can find within the house itself, maybe in the cellar. That door was also well secured, if I recall correctly. Two separate bolts... a bit peculiar on an inside door."

Calum:

Calum had been rummaging around finding the city map that had been bought, and was for the moment ignoring Karl and his book.

Calum introdues himself to Mr Dooley. "Calum Childs, I'm interested in the history of this chapel place Mr Dooley."

"Do you think you could show me on this map where the forest you're talking about is?"
OOC,Oh GM, hopefully Calum has the map or it's nearby?

Mr. Dooley
When Calum doesn't manage to produce a map, Mr. Dooley offers him one from his kiosque. I should have thought of that earlier.
He marks a large uninhabited piece of land at the end of Narrow Lane with a red pen, it's a number of blocks away from the house and might take some time to search.
OOC,Anyone have some spare players we could use for Andrew and Michael?

Calum:

Calum is clearly delighted to have a map and the possibility of field work.

"Thankyou very much for that Mr Dooley. You must let me pay for the map, and I'll buy a paper too, and I definitely think you should have a cup of joe on me to cap it off."

Calum fishes out enough coinage to pay for all of the above and gratefully hands it all to Dooley.

Returning to Karl et al, Calum pipes up, "Chaps, I'm sick of pouring through files for the moment. I believe I shall go and have a look around this forest. Is anyone interested in joining me?"

Karl looked to Calum a bit disappointed with the concept of scouting about forests on a raw hike through unbeaten trails. He was far from the picture of health... a good 100 pounds or more overweight. "Oh well... I don't think that would be wise." He cleared is throat, "I mean... if you want to, that's fine. But I definitely think pouring over this diary is too important to put off any longer. So perhaps while you scout the area, Will and I can learn what we can about the historical background." He smiled, feeling he covered his pathetic slothery well enough for the time being.

ooc,Dan wouldn't have a problem lending the car to the others while he's mending - as long as he's in for a fair share of the take in the end. What kit are you referring to though? I'm pretty sure we dumped all the stuff we bought into the house. But if it would have made more sense to leave it in the car...

"Hmmn. I don't want to disappoint you Karl, but if the forest is an option, I'll have to go with that - there's a better chance for getting a photograph to go with the story... ooc, that's settled then. Calum has the car, while the kit is in the house. If I'm not mistaken Will and Calum are headed to search for the Chapel, and Michael is to be decided yet. Karl can take Andrew and read the diary to themselves for three days ;) Let's call it two if it's the only thing you'll be doing besides eating and sleeping, but that will take a larger toll on you and you might miss something due to the amount of information.

"I'm not going to go back into that house to get any kit until we need it, but I still have my own archeological tools, mostly small brushes and the like. We shall have some nice exploring to do!"

OOC,Given recent experiences, Calum will also bring along his old Army Webley .44 revolver, loaded with five fat bullets, and tucked into his jacket.

OOC,Calum is more than welcome to bring his gun. Let's move forward shall we. Andrew and Karl are off to the hospital to read with Dan if he likes, and I'll have a new topic for them soon. The rest stay here.
The party consisting of Calum, Mike and Will head off to gather some gear and then make their way towards the end of Narrow Lane. As you near your destination, the office building seem to dwindle, and their places are taken by old houses, most of them unoccupied. The road itself seems to deteriorate in time and finally you arrive at the cracked and weed-filled end of the street which seems to vanish instantly and if there ever was any more of Narrow Lane, it is now hidden behind thick bushes. Behind the tall shrubbery some trees are visible. You passed the last derelict house some 500 yards earlier.

Calum:

Calum is in pig heaven, out doing some fieldwork. His mood very evidently picks up.

"Chaps, for the moment I suggest we all stick together. Silly as it sounds, I suspect we could get quite lost in that. We'll probably find some lost Civil war soldiers trying to find their way home."

Calum will pull out a notebook and pencil, and start methodically mapping the little wilderness.

The party enters the bushes. There's still pavement under your feet, but it's very cracked and everything is growing out from between the cracks. As you head into the trees, the undergrowth lightens and there's more space to move and spread out a bit. After about a hundred yards you seem to reach the end of the pavement. It seems a bit arched and under further examination it turns out to be a dead end roundabout.
Roll for Spot Hidden please.

The investigators set off on the old path. The bushes lessen after a few yards and remains that way. After a brief walk you notice something peculiar. It seems to have been a wall some time ago, but it's so weathered and falling apart, that it's hard to tell. You do notice a seemingly fresh mark on the wall. Painted in white, three "Y"s touching with their tops to their two neighbors to forma a triangle. Inside them is painted an eye. As soon as you look at the eye you fee an irritating tingling between your eyes.

Behind the wall are what might be the remnants of the Chapel, it's hard to tell yet.

OOC,Let's agree that rolling is not necessary unless you're doing something outside your specialisation or something that requires uncanny skill. If you have 50% Drive Car, you don't have to roll to see if you can drive it. But if you try to take a sharp corner driving 65mph, you will roll. A photographer taking a still is something he's doon thousands of times and unless I decide the conditions are especially hard, we'll leave the rolling for when the time comes to develop the film and you are insane or really tired.

Calum will attempt to sketch the symbol in his notebook too. Once he's done that, Calum will start inspecting the area around the wall, and particularly behind it, looking for the rest of a building or chapel.

Calum will head over and start trying to map the ruins in his notebook, keeping out of the way of the camera-work. Once that's done, he'll search through the ruins.

Prowling the chapel, you find mostly blocks of granite, half-burnt rotted timbers, and ancient rubbish. After a few minutes of walking around the ruins and preparing to take a final picture, Will takes a step back and the three men hear the creaking of what seems to be an old floorboard. What you are standing on must have been the floor of the chapel at one point, but time seems to have overgrown it with grass and you haven't noticed before. There must have been a basement below where you stand. Slowly and delicately you try to reach the safety of solid ground.

Calum,Calum suffers 3 HP. Falling down. (1d6=3) You hit the ground with a grunt as you fall flat on your face. The air is instantly pushed out of your lungs and you struggle up gasping for breath. Air comes in short painful gasps, and tears run to your eyes. Every breath is painful, but slightly easier. within a minute of the fall you are breathing passingly well, as if you just ran a marathon. You slowly realize Mike is yelling down into the hole from above. YOu try to answer him but all you manage is a faint whisper. You start to feel a hot pulsing feeling in your ankle apart from all the bruises from the fall. You try to move it, it doesn't feel broken, but definitely at least sprained. YOu might be able to hobble around a bit. The floor is littered with the old floorboards. It seems that this part of the basement was sealed off from the rest, reached by separate stairs now buried under tons of rubble. Within the room are two skeletons dressed in fragment or silk robes. Also visible are a few cabinets and an old, half rotten desk. You also see Will sitting up looking thoroughly banged up, a thin stream of blood is coming down from a cut in his forehead into his eyes.

(1d6=6) Bruised and battered, with a thin stream of blood pouring into his eyes, Will decides not to move just yet. Breaths come hard and everything seems in pain. Must have cracked a rib. Speaking is out of the question, unless for the occasional grunt. You start noticing things around you. As you start to pull yourself up, you notice old floorboards litter the basement floor, some lying across your outstretched legs. It's damp, and just a bit of dust has gone up from your fall. You manage to pull yourself into a sitting position, but that exhausts your pain threshold and any strength you had from the adrenaline. You look around. It seems that this part of the basement was sealed off from the rest, reached by separate stairs now buried under tons of rubble. Within this room are two skeletons dressed in fragment or silk robes. OOC,I know that you said earlier that we took some "gear" with us when we went into the forest. Any chance that gear included some rope?
Mike jumps back a bit as the floor collapses around Will and Calum. Good Lord! This whole affair seems cursed! He listens to see if he can hear any movement in the old basement and starts to look around for some way to get down there without having to climb or jump. Figuring that any basement would have some sort of access point, he starts to look around the ruins for any sort of trap doors or stairs leading downward.

Mike frantically searches around ther ruins and discovers and old set of stairs that once led into the church's basement. Unfortunately, the stiars are blocked by rubble. Blast it all! Now what? Turning away from the stairs, Mike runs back towards the car. I think there is some rope back in the car! At least, I hope there is...

Finding the rope in the trunk of the car, Mike rushes back to the ruins, out of breath. He looks around the hole for something to secure to one end of the rope, and after tieing it up, he throws the other end of the rope into the hole. He squints over the edge, trying to make sure that the rope makes it all the way down.

Mike shouts down the hole towards his fallen comrades. Any chance that you guys are going to be able to climb out of there on your own? I don't know if I'm going to be able to manage coming down after you, what with my hand and all...

Mike starts to pace nervously near the hole... Blast it, blast it, blast it... Nevermind, I'm going to come down! Getting a firm grip on the rope with his good hand, Mike slowly lowers himself into the hole. He does his best to hold on with his crippled hand, and slowly makes his way down the rope.

"Owowowowowowow!!! Damnation and blast!!" Calum wheezes as his breath gradually comes back.

Grief, did anyone hear me panicking? Calum sits up with a groan then puts his hat and glasses back on. He glances around quickly. "Good heavens. This is like finds in Egypt. Although the dead people there are normally a bit more neatly presented."

Calum limps over to Will and looks at him. "Mike! We are definitely going to need some medical assistance down here. I might be able to climb out, but we will possibly have to pull Will up. And Will's hurt his head." I remember head injuries in the war and theye were normally a bad thing.

Noting Mike's efforts to get down with a rope, Calum strikes a match for a bit more light and turns slowly around, having a bit more of a look at the room. "What is this? Some kind of lost tomb? Why are these skeletons here?"

Will

Will tries to talk to Callum, but it hurts too much, and just gasps for breath instead.

Calum:

I know the good doc is going to be better at this than me but I don't think we have the luxury of waiting right now.

Calum starts bandaging Will up with handkerchiefs, neckties etc.

"Don't worry Old Boy, I saw chaps a lot worse looking than you back in France who pulled through."
OOC,Has Calum got enough time and kit to make a First Aid roll? His skill is 35% BTW.

Calum,nope, not enough kit.
Will's head wound has stopped bleeding and the blood is slowly drying on his face where it hasn't been wiped away. You're slowly coming to your senses.
Mike stumbles down into the cavern having found a rather easy way down with the help of a rope. It seems even Will will be able to climb up with some help when he comes around fully.
OOC,Time to look around, I have no intention of letting you die in the besement of a chapel, there are much worse deaths awaiting around the bend :> Want to speed this up a bit as we're way behind the other party, and I'm practically done with their little episode. bwahaha :>

The room contains cabinets full of moulded notebooks.
Chained to a rotting desk is an enormous volume bound in animal hide.

Mike Peterson

Mike climbs slowly down the rope, surprised at how easy his descent was. He only lost his grip at the very end, and stumbled slightly as he reached the bottom.

Turning quickly to Will, he found that Calum had already patched Will up very well. Guess you guys don't need my help after all. Calum, you're pretty handy in a tight spot.

With the immediate concern of the health of Calum and Will seemingly under control, Mike takes a look around the room. It's like some sort of secret library down here. This is wonderful. We're bound to find something useful! Mike notices the large book chained to a desk and makes his way straight over to it.

Calum:

"Chaps, interesting as this all is, I think perhaps we should hide the hole we've made, head over to the hospital and get fixed up, and come back here tomorrow with the others."

"Mike, if you can carry it, perhaps you could bring that big book with you now?"

Will

"Sounds like a plan," Will says, wincing in pain. "I think the hospital is definitely a good idea."
