IC Scene 6b - The House; Karl and Dan

An old house is shrouded in dark rumours and fearful whispers. Its past residents have all had grisly experiences in there, and the few which are able to speak of it will not. Now, pulled in by the promise of money, several investigators try to find the house's dark secret.

IC Scene 6b - The House; Karl and Dan

Post by zielonobrody »

After picking up the rest of the supplies you find a map and locate the address you're looking for.

As you drive towards it, you notice that as you get nearer, the houses are newer and nicer, more and more office buildings present themselves, all white and shiny with clean windows. You see a gap in the whiteness ahead. There it is, a spot of darkness on the beautiful row of pretty buildings, the hauted house. Supposedly haunted, you correct yourself in your thoughts. An old brick bungalow hides in the shadows of the tall buildings next to it. The untended grass is yellowing as it doesn't get much light. A path leads to the enterance on the left of the house and there is a path around the house to the rear. The front windows are curtained and the house's dark secrets are hidden from sight.

Karls senses something ominous within but couldn't say why if he were asked.

OOC: I may have forgotten to mention this, but you have the keys to the house.

The door has one old lock and four newer ones, that seem to have been installed recently, maybe within the past year or two. Old untended bushes are to be seen ion the yard behind the house. No animal sounds are to be heard from them, not even a bird flying by, all is silent.

Karl switched off the engine of the Stutz and ran his gaze over the little house. Couldn't a ghost haunt a nice, new house, just for a change? he thought, The place certainly looks creepy enough.

He climbed out of the car, fetching the blankets from the trunk and followed Dan up the front walk.

"A nice quiet neighborhood. 'Not a creature is stirring, not even a mouse.'" He waited patiently as Dan tried key after key until all the locks were open. "Somebody certainly wanted to keep something out, it appears. Odd when what they feared most was inside, yes?"

You unlock the door and enter the house. There is a long corridor with doors to either side. The first double-door to the right is open, so you head there. It's the living room, with an arch leading to the dining room and further on to the kitchen. There is a couch and armchairs and shelves with various trinkets. You start bringing in your equipment in to the room as there's more than enough room. There is some dust on the floor, nobody's been in the house for a while but it quickly disperses as you move around. A faint unsettling scent is hanging in the air. It's also a bit stuffy inside, there hasn't been any fresh air in either.
Karl,Idea roll[80] = 75 You nitice that there is an unusual number of crosses and other Catholic devotionalia all around the room.
Dan,Idea roll[75] = 88 There is a strange painting on the wall. The bizarre lines and figures in it make you unsettled.

Karl looks around the place, pointing out the crucifixes and religious prints on the walls, the religious statues on the tables and shelves and the rosaries draped on lamps: "Locks on the doors and icons on the walls and still they couldn't abide, eh?"
Keeper,Karl wants to open the back door in the kitchen to air the place out while they unpack. Where are the stairs to the second floor? Is there a cellar?
After dropping the blankets on the sofa, Karl brings his camera equipment to the dining table, then each of the cots, leaving the heavier loads for Dan. "Let's put the cooking things and food in the kitchen. The living room can serve as our dormitory." As he passes back and forth from the curb to the kitchen, a small polychrome statue of the Blessed Virgin and a cut-glass rosary find their way into his pockets.

http://drawsave.com/5A L is for Living Room, D is for Dining Room, K is for Kitchen.

You enter the murky Dining room. In the center sits a large mahogany table with seven matching chairs. Three places are set and tomato soup with rice rots in a large bowl. That's probably where the smell is coming from.

In the kitchen you find a wood-fed stove and oven and a meager larder. There are still some edible things in the top cabinets, mostly canned soup and meat, rice kernels, pastas and a few bottles of homemade wine. The bottom cabinets seem to have been emptied by rats, not much is left there beside the packing and rat droppings. There isn't a door leading outside in the kitchen, you try the windows, but they are nailed shut.

There are three other rooms on the floor, the doors are in the hallway, all closed. On the far left of the corridor there is a staircase leading upstairs, and opposite it is a door that leads to the basement. It has a lock and two bolts, that seem to be accessible only from the corridor. The light switch on the basement stairs doesn't work.

OOC: Anything else you wish to check?

Karl goes snooping around a bit while Dan brings in the last couple of loads. He lifts the lid of the soup tureen.

"Christ! Couldn't the landlord have thrown out this swill at least?" He carefully picks up the tureen and carries it out the front door, pitching the whole thing into the overgrown weeds at the edge of the property. Going back in, he tries to open a window, but finds it's nailed shut. Sighing, he goes out to his car and comes back in with his toolkit. Taking out a hammer, he rips the nails from the sash and forces the window up. "Better."

Leaving the toolkit on the dining table, he goes along the corridor as Dan is bringing in the last load of supplies. Karl opens each of the doors from front to back, looking into the rooms. He peers up the stairs, but decides against the climb. He turns to the cellar door. "More locks!" he calls out to Dan. He opens the door and flicks the light switch without result. Burned out bulb, perhaps?

He goes through the kitchen door as Dan is opening and closing cabinets. "Ugh. Vermin. I cannot stand filthy things. Make sure our food is kept in metal containers."

Karl takes a peek in the side rooms. Starting from the entrance the first room is a storage room filled with boxes and old junk, such as a rusted water tank and two old bikes. There is a wooden cupboard in the right end, but it is nailed shut. The second room is also a storage room containing mostly broken wooden furniture that looks like it could be used to light the stove. The third room is the mud room, complete with overcoats, galoshes, hats and umbrellas. There is a door leading outside here.
Karl,Idea[80] = 27 You notice there are three bolts and two locks on the door.
The staircase leading to the basement looks steep and unstable. The rickety stairs disappear into the darkness. There's probably a lightbulb downstairs, no way of telling if it's burned out from here...

You finish transporting all the goods and are basically ready to go. Calum and Pearl could probably use some help in the Library.

"There are still more locks on this back door," Karl calls to Dan. He sets about trying to unlock this door.

The locks and blots click back and you open the door into the back yard. It's overgrown with grass and weeds, wilted flowers and pine trees grow along the back fence. Nothing of any interest is to be found. There is a muddy path leading around the house, but there are no footprints in the earth.

While Dan putters in the kitchen, Karl goes to the dining room and gets a screwdriver out of his toolkit. He slips over to the first store room and goes to work prying open the nailed-up cupboard.

[OOC - Feel free to have Dan interrupt him and insist on returning to the library before it's open.]

OOC. I just PM'd Thomas, maybe he just forgot about us here. He has till morning before I take over :>
Karl,Karl grunts and sweats as he pries open the boards that were used to nail the cupboard shut. It takes him some ten minutes to get them off. But his efforts seem to be rewarded as inside he finds three leather bound books. Upon browsing through them he finds they are the diaries of one W. Corbitt. There is an address on one of the books' title pages, that suggests he lived here some time ago. The amount of knowledge gathered in them seems to amount into some two days reading time. Skimming through, Karl identifies the text to be English, a bit archaic in some moments. There is nothing else in the cupboard but old cobwebs.

Yes, let's do that, I'm spent. Says a rather sweaty Dan. Karl isn't quite sure if he's mad at him for having him do most of the carrying.

You lock up the house and head for the library. Go to the Library thread.

Oops,My apologies fellas. My lack of posting was unintentional. I just didn't know a new thread had started up.
Dan Marrison

Dan was feeling a bit uneased about all the excessive security in the house. "Multiple locks on the front and back doors... locks on the cellar, all the windows nailed shut. And was that a cupboard you were prying loose in there? So strange. I agree with your assessment. Seems there was something from outside the house haunting these people... well, and the cellar... and apparently that cupboard you were working on." He scratched his head. Looking at the window that Karl had opened, he grabbed the salt container and poured a line across the sill. "Old superstition ... supposed to keep the evil spirits out. Right?" He shrugged and did it mostly just to see if someone or something crawled in through while they were gone.

Taking one more look at the particularly disturbing painting, he points it out to Karl, "Do you know this artist?" He shook his head in disproval, "I don't like it. Makes me ansy. Something about the lines, angles, shading... all wrong."

Upon further examination of the painting both feel their stomachs roll. YOu can't seem to locate the author's name before you have to turn your eyes away.

Dan Marrison

The big man attempts to take the painting down to turn it about and face it toward the wall in hopes of setting them somewhat at ease.

Looking around one last time, Dan says "Well, it's quite obvious there's been nothing here any time recently." He stepped back over to the window Karl just shut and pushes the salt back into a solid line making sure he would be able to tell if there was any disturbance while they were gone. "Ok, let's get back to that library, but I want to stop back at the store and get some mice and rat traps, and some metal containers like you suggested. But before we go, let's put the non-canned food in the ice box for now just to be on the safe side."
