You travel without incidents. At the end, you are quite hungry- in cheap class, they don't serve any food. The aeroport is several miles at north of Arkhan. It's a medium size city- less than one million of inhabitants, with several high tech companies. You take the metro, and arrive at the Miskatonic University. The buildings are quite ancient, probably XIX century, but in very good shape. With some help, you arrive at the office where the meeting is suppose to happen: the complicated name, is the modern (and political correct) name of the department of history.

A secretary brings you inside. You see 4 different men. One is older (about 60's) with glasses (a very rare thing nowadays), thin built, gray hair and pale; 2 others are about 40, strongly built with a very skin that show they get a lot of air; the last one is much younger, barely 30 with a very shy look.
-Yes gentleman?- asks the older.

-In the expedition? In what roles? You are not teachers or students... Oh! The mercenaries! Funny, you don't like thugs. That's better. I presume you know all the conditions and objectives?
-Sir, I doubt they know anything- says one of the man with 40's- we didn't give much details to keep the secrecy.
-Right! Could you speak a bit of you before I explain you a little more?

"I come from Virginia originally," says Patrick, "but I stayed in California after I graduated from CalTech with a bachelor's degree in Computer Science. I've always been good with computers, and I've got my own deck and programs. I'm also a very good driver, and I know a bit about American history. I can do research the old fashioned way as well as online. While Vance here is much better at fighting than I am, I'm fully capable of defending myself."

OOC: I'm putting all five of Vance's points into handgun.

Vance looks at the professor.

"You don't recognize me? I'm not surprised. Like my computer friend here, I do hacking, just not the same type."

He swings his axe up between himself and the professor, then sets it on the ground and leans against it with one hand.

"I also stab thing, shoot things, and punch things," he explains.

"Do you see the irony? I spent a year here at your very own institute, and all I got were worthless high marks when no one could find the money to send me to a second year. I go scorn the works of the mind, kill people in California, fight until it is all I can do, and now you want to pay me to accompany you. Yep, I'm the mercenary thug you want. And if you want to test me before you hire me, I can prove my combat abilities at any time."

Like Patrick, Vance is actually thinking about food, but he is not going to let on to the college profs.

"I only spent a year, and I did not declare a major. I took a few history courses - you might be able to find me in your records. But that's all in the past now. I've spent the last few years of my life as a solo in Night City, and that is why I am here now. I'm a bit curious why you plan to hire guards on your archaeological expedition, although it is a smart move - the world is dangerous beyond the ivory tower..."

-Hum, I remember now. We lost several promissing students and were forced to canceled all the archaeological campaigns for 3 years. Now, to avoid that, we only accept the help of the corporation if they give us the funds for the full time. And we have special conditions for ancient students.
-Sir, I think it's better that we keep focus in the subject.

-Oh? Ok, then. Well, you all know that the modifications of the planet temperature are a disaster for the envirament and the planet and all those things. But sometimes, good things happen. You see, with the melting of the ice, it was discovered that in Greenland some ruins were discovered in the far north. They must be Viking of course, since it doubtful that the Inuit could have done such complex buildings, but we need to send a group to be sure. Its an amazing discovery. With the extintion of the polar bear, the only problem will be the wild dogs who can be a true nuisance, and maybe pirates.

"Okay," says Patrick. "I'll bring my deck, but it's a standard one. The programs I have can be used to test your security, but I don't have room to carry around defensive programs. They tend to eat up memory. I'll need access to your system and specifications of your current defenses, and I'll see what I can do about improving them. Without an advanced deck and better attack programs, I won't be able to see how your security stacks up against the latest technology. I'll also need to take a look at your encryption and see if I can make it better. I can try using Code Cracker on it. If I can break it, it won't be good enough."
OOC,Patrick will bring his deck, his Glock, a good supply of ammo, as well as his toolkits, his pocket phone, his links, and his interface plugs. Essentially, everything listed on his character sheet. Anything else I bring depends on what the university has available.

They use a speedtrap, one of the cheapest and oldest (even if efective against amateurs) program of alarm. No anti-personnel or protection (this is a university after all, not a corporation). With the money you earn, you can buy a more recent alarm program or a defensive program to defeat any intrusions.

Re: All

by Mr. Handy
OOC,Um, they expect me to spend my own money to enhance their security?! That's not right. I'm not keeping these programs afterwards, they are. The university should use its own funds to buy the security programs I recommend, not make me pay for it out of my salary! I'm the security consultant they hired. If I say they need something and they agree, which they ought to as long as the price is reasonable, then they should pay for it out of their budget. Maybe we can negotiate a dollar amount that they'll agree to invest on Net security, and then I can decide what defensive programs to spend it on. I still have the program list you sent me, which also has defensive programs listed, but it doesn't have prices for those.

OOC: You both will have to use a fast talk to convince them the necessity of buying new material. Remember that they do not understand much of security. So I give you a bonus of 10% to the fast talk roll.

Re: All

Vance does not need to convince them of anything yet - he intended to buy the cold weather gear for himself with his own money. He still has not spent any of the money he earned on the Eggshell deal, so he should have plenty (and what he buys himself he can keep).

If Patrick cannot convince them of the need for better electronic security, then perhaps Vance could try as well, but I'll let the tech take the lead on this issue.

OOC,We should be able to use Persuade here, I'd think. That has a higher base skill, which would give us a significantly better chance, but still not a good one. Bargain seems like it would be fitting too. It's too bad Rubix isn't here. He had those chips that gave him Bargain at 50%. Can I also craft defense programs or a datawall on my own, using my computer skills?
Patrick only has to look at what passes for security for a minute before he realizes how inadequate it is. "I'm sorry," he says, shaking his head, "but your current 'defenses' wouldn't keep a five year old out. They might detect the intrusion - if you're lucky. You're going to need to upgrade this old Speedtrap to at least a Watchdog - or a Bloodhound if you care about determining where an attack originated. You haven't even installed a basic datawall. Anyone on the Net could just walk in, even without cracking programs. I also recommend getting at least some simple encryption for any sensitive communication. Beyond that, there are other security programs that could be useful - a Flatline to fry an attacker's equipment, a Killer or a Demon for active defense, or even a Stun program to disable them until the authorities can come arrest them - but those options aren't absolutely essential and will probably cost more money than you'd like to spend. This is a university, not a megacorp, so let's just stick with the basics: a datawall and a Watchdog will give you a fairly decent level of protection against the usual threats out there, and rudimentary encryption will keep most people from being able to eavesdrop. You obviously expect this as a potential threat, since you hired me to protect against it, so you should spend what you need from your budget. Don't think of it as an expenditure. It's really an investment. You'll be able to use these defense programs for other purposes too. Any halfway decent student could break in and change their grades, and you'd never even know it. It's probably already happened more times than you realize." He can see, however, that these people aren't keen on spending money.

OOC: Mr Handy, I will use the same rule that I use with my group: when a good roleplay is done, I ignore the dices. So you pass, even if the sucess is mitigate, you will have a small budget. And you can always use beta's versions (who are cheaper but may have some problems) or illegal software (they are cheaper and they work fine as long as you aren't caught by the justice).

They are all impressed.
-It seems we got the rigth people! Unfortunely it is too late to submit to the comission a new proposal. So we will have to use the money of the departement and it's not much I'm afraid. 1200$ is all we can give you.

Re: All

"Thank you," says Patrick. "That should be good enough to get some defenses in place. We can't afford any active defense programs, but we do have me. If an alarm is tripped, I can jack in and fight the intruder myself. I can also patrol the datawall when I'm not doing anything else."
OOC,Thanks! I won't be using any illegal software. That would get my employers in trouble too, and who would hire me again after that? I am considering beta versions. I do need a price list for defensive programs so I can decide how to spend the money. Specifically, how much is a low-strength datawall? How much for a Watchdog or a Bloodhound, and how much for encryption software? Please let me know the prices of both the normal software and the beta versions. Also, can I try to code something myself? Some of these things will be too complicated to make in a short amount of time, but an encryption algorithm should be possible.

Re: All

Here are the characteristics of the datafortress. It has 1 CPU (4 memories, or 40 MU, so you have a lot of space, pitty you don't have much to fill it). It has a low datawall of 1 (standart is 2, as your deck have). To improve 1 in the datawall strenght you need to spend 1000$ (to a maximum of 10). A watchdog costs 650$. Bloodhound is 700$. The database of the university has also 1 codegate (str 2, to improve it you need to spend 2000$). It's artificial Inteligence is just 3. It hasn't any encryption algorythm (here it is called "filelocker").
If you chose a beta version of any programm, it's all half price, but each time you use it you must roll a 1d10, and if you get a "1", the software used doesn't work.
A Filelocker costs 140$ and has a str of 4. To make you own, you need one roll and 30 hours of work (I think it would be better to buy one, since it is cheap).
To make your own codegate, for a strenght of 4, you need one roll and 30 hours of work. So, before any significant information is discovered by the team, the new codegate should be ready.
An aditional information: any hacker may try to destroy the datawall or the codegate (but they need different software to do that).
Just a sugestion: With such a low budget, maybe you should try to buy a better alarm programm and a anti-system like Krash (str 3, 570$, stops the enemy CUP of working for 1d6+1 turns), or flatline (destroys the enemy cybermodem, str 3, 570$).

Re: All

OOC,Do datawalls have beta versions? If not, then there's no way I'm going to be able to upgrade it. If I did that, I couldn't afford a beta Watchdog. Increasing the datawall to 2 won't be too effective, as any decent hacker will have a Hammer with Str 4. It would be more resistant to a Worm, but if the hacker has a Worm I've got a lot more to worry about. I'm thinking of buying a regular Bloodhound for $700 since it's not much more than a Watchdog. If someone breaks in, this will let me track them down and go after them myself. Then I could buy a beta Flatline for $285 and a Filelocker for 140$, and make my own Codegate. Do I roll Computer Use for that? If I do this, I'll spend a total of $1125, leaving $75 in the budget as a down payment in case I need to repair the datawall or something. Very interesting twist, having to play defense. It does help to know how the opposition thinks.

OOC: While Patrick is thinking about security, I wouldn't mind seeing some prices for cold-weather gear so I could think about that. I've also been thinking about body armor - what sort of price range is that in? As far as I know, I have $300 from the Eggshell deal, plus a bonus of unknown size, and Vance's financial resources from before the start of the campaign.

OOC: Mr Handy: No datawall beta bersion. You can make your own gate but must roll the programming language NewJava. If you spend extra time, you get a bonus (10% for each ten hours of work). For the rest, seems a good choice.
Mi-Go Agent: For 250 you receive a nice Door Gun's Vest that protect's 13 HP of damage (but has a penalty of -3 in dex). For 100$ you receive a special nylon helmet that protects 7 Hp of damage and 0 of dex penalty. There is more expensive material (but you don't have acess to that, it's for corporate) and cheaper and less reliable material. You have 500% of the Eggshell/bonus and 1500$ of your savings. About cold gear: except special cloths against the cold, there isn't much to buy (but remember that Greenland in my version is much hotter with the global warming than in our world, so the minimum at this time of the year is -5º celcius).

OOC: I forgot about that globabl warming. Vance will purchase a helmet before we leave tommorow. I assume he owns ordinary sweaters and parkas for cold weather? Hopefully the Miskatonic expediation will have their own gear I can borrow if they are planning to explore some sort of freezing ice cavern.

OOC,NewJava could be a problem. I only have 26% in that. I'd have thought I could use CyberNet++ instead. How many hours can I afford to spend on this before I'd estimate a time would come when we'd need the stronger Codegate? I'm also considering buying that Replicator program before we leave, as it could be useful if I'm going to counterattack a hacker. I have $415 of my own money left (counting what I started with), so this would leave me with $95 afterwards, not counting my salary.

Re: All

OOC: Mi-Go Agent: you have ordinary cloths that will do, as long as the weather doesn't get too cold (so probably it's better to buy some extra-cloths anyway, buts it's easy to find, for 50$ you get those cloths).

Mr Handy: Well, CyberNet is to create virus and programmes, NewJava to construct datawalls and things like that. For another 30 hours (that means another 2 days), you get a bonus of 30%. Unless you find someone in the net that helps you (you can pay in money or own a favour...).

OOC,Well, that didn't work. I really don't want to pay my own money for a better codegate for the university, and I definitely don't want to owe anyone a favor. Maybe I can try again later on in the expedition. I'll go ahead with my plan from earlier. Of the university's $1200 buget, $700 will go for a Bloodhound, $285 for a beta Flatline, and $140 for a Filelocker. This totals $1125, leaving $75 in the budget. For myself, I'll buy a Replicator program for $320 and some extra warm clothes for $50. This leaves me with $45 of my own money.

The plane takes off. You get some time to meet the others members of the expedition. There are 2 different opinions about what they will find: one that it is a lost Viking city (even if there weren’t any references to such a northern city); the other is that a Inuit place (but no remains of any city builded by the Inuit were ever found).

Professors
Thomas Derby (Age 51): Archaeologist and leader of the expedition, (main field: Mayan civilizations, but also studies north American sites since it’s easier to find funds). He thinks that the remains must be probably Viking.

Belinda Mirel (Age 27 and very pretty): From the gender equality section. Everybody dislikes, since to create her section, several other teachers loose their jobs. Doesn’t have a clear idea about the expedition, but will try to find proofs that the city was:
1 A mysogenist/machist society, and that was the reason it was abandoned
2 It was a pacifist/matriarchal society that explains why they survived in such harsh conditions.

Sun Ling (Age 32): Only member of the anthropology department (her other 2 colleagues lost their jobs to create the Gender and equality section; she hates Belinda (who she sees as a fraud). She knows several Inuit dialects, and defends that the city must be the remains of a Inuit civilization (or proto-Inuit. She is dating Laurence (everybody knows, but they are keeping the thing private).

Laurence Mathieu (Age 37): Medieval History Section. Advocates that the remains must be Viking, since the Inuit were too primitives.

Christian Roderick (Age 55, Afro-American): Chemistry department, he will make all the tests. Doesn’t care much of what civilization are the remains but is all happy to work.

Ten students are also going.
Claire, Johnny, Tanaka, Carlos, Ali, George, Anne, Tobias are doing the dig (they are students of archaeology and history; they all believe its Viking, except Tobias that thinks that it is a extraterrestrial civilization). For them it’s a golden opportunity to make a real important research
Mark is a student of history, but came with Belinda Morel. He is trying to write an essay about the subject.
Mary is a student of chemistry. She thinks that the expedition is a waste of money, but it’s probably her best chance to impress the department and get a job.

Patrick keeps an open mind about the origin of the ruins, as he hasn't even seen them yet and it wouldn't be scientific to make up one's mind before examining the evidence. He wouldn't be surprised if everyone turns out to be at least partially wrong, however.

After several hours, you arrive at the Greenland. First you see only the Ocean, a huge blue. Then Grrenland. The landscape is actually of grey colour. The airport is in Kangerlussuaq, several miles north of Nuuk (the capital). You stayed in a Hotel in the first night to have some sleep (and more important, to finish to buy supplies). With some delays, you leave after 3 days. You use helicopters (it would take too much time to use trucks, since the place is several thousands of km with no roads). This voyage is even more disconfortable, but you are so tired that you all sleep. Finally, the helicopters land. You are 3 Km south of the ruins (the best place to helicopters land). The dominant colour is white, and there is a gentle breeze (the temperature is about 5ºC). You unpack all the cargo, and Professor Derby turns to you and say:
-Well, here we are! I want a small group to scout the ruins but the rest will be here mounting hour base. Any volunteers to go?

OOC,A couple of the posts in Channel 54 have the days of the week incorrect, I've noticed. Two dates a week apart are given different days of the week. August 12, 2030 is a Monday, but August 13 and August 20 are Tuesdays.
"I'd like to see the ruins," says Patrick. "I have to admit, I am curious about them."

OOC: I used the first time a perpetual calendar, but never found it again. Thanks anyway.
-About the spirits? You see, the Inuits believe that land have spirits and they demand that a study is made before any work to see if they are not disturb. Seems that vice-director was a bit offensive abouth their believes. You may both come. Mr Vance, I'm not expecting pirates or anything, but we never know. And Mr Lee, you will send all the data that we will collect in the place to the university. Just to have the board happy.
The group will be made by Professor Derby and Ling and two students.

OOC,You're welcome. I probably wouldn't have noticed, but I had just seen a question in another game that takes place in 2011 about what day of the week the current date was. You can also get the day of the week for any date from 1900-2099 by using the built-in calendar if you have Windows Vista (I'm not sure if XP can do this). If you bring up the dialog box that lets you set the current date and time (by clicking the clock on the bottom right), you can then click on the date and zoom the display out from a single month to a year of months, then a decade of years, and then a century of decades. From there you can zoom back in on any given month. If you hit ESC when you're done, you can exit without actually changing the system date. That's how I figured out what day of the week it was supposed to be. Also, once you have one date, you can use it as a point of reference to calculate nearby dates.
"Yes, of course I'll send back our findings to the university," says Patrick. "By the time we return, the base should be set up, and then I can jack in somewhere with my deck."

OOC: Thanks!

The small group starts the walk. In the snow it's more dificult to march, and in many places the snow and ice is half melted. After an hour, you start to see shapes of buildings isolated, and very quickly a wall and a city. The city must had been completly covert by ice for a long time. And it was very big.
-What is this? Ling, do you want to risk to enter the city?

You can both make a History roll and a natural history roll.

Patrick looks at the ruins in awe. He doesn't know much about the Inuit or Vikings, but this city seems far too big to have been constructed by either civilization. He can't tell all that much from the surrounding wilderness either.

Re: All

by Mi-Go Agent
Vanceponders history and realizes something, but his limited knowledge of natural history does not help him.

"I'm just security, not an archaeologist like you guys are, but I know that entering the city could disturb the arrangement of things and destroy evidence of its inhabitants. Both from a security perspective and a research one, I think it would be better to have a good look from the outside, and maybe walk around it, before beginning a methodical analysis."

As Vance puts an ordinary arrow in his bow, he takes a thorough look around at the terrain.

OOC: I'm assuming that Vance wears his helmet when not in the archaeological camp, so he doesn't have to put it on now.

-We know that-says Professor Derby- we are not amateurs!
Vance notice that this place is not Viking. The walls are too big, and the area covered is of several miles. And its impossible to be Inuit. So this is a new civilization, never heard before.
Professor Ling notice something and says:
-There! In the wall, there are some carvings.
You all come close. The pictures are quite stylized. To believe the images, the inhabitants were tender, and would have large straight noses and long earlobes. And they are not Inuit.
Professor Derby says then:
-Let's return to the camp. We will return tomorrow as soon everything is settled in our camp.

"Okay, let's head back," says Patrick. "This is huge. It doesn't look like this place was constructed by either the Inuit or the Vikings, but by some other unknown civilization. I'm sure the university will be very interested to hear about this."

Everything seems normal for now (well, you hear thye students talking in their tents all very excited). You all sleep well (but several students awake with a tired look and receive a reprimend from the teatchers). Next day, you take a quick breakfast, and then much of the group will return to the city. Only the the chemists and two securities will stay. As soon as you arrived at the city, two groups are formed: one will explore the outskirts of the city to see some mounds, the other in the city itself. In what group do you want to be (you can stay together or divide).

Re: All

by Mi-Go Agent
Given that this is a horror RPG and that we are exploring a mysterious city probably built by an unknown race...yep, time to split up.

"The city might be a bit odd, but now I wonder..." begins Vance, "if the people in the city were as soft as their art portrays them, perhaps some other people were actually helping them to survive, some people linked to the mounds. And if we get attacked by pirates or any other human agency, the attack will surely come from outside the city. So maybe I would be best staying outside. On the other hand, going into the city itself is very tempting, and as the most mysterious thing here it feels like the most dangerous. At least we can stay constantly in touch by phone and camera. Maybe I could go with the outside group, and be ready to rush in to your rescue if you wind up in a predicament inside?"

Since we are in the open and it will take some time to enter the place, I'l take Mr Vance; you will have Lee, so he may take all photos and send them to the Miskatonik.
Patrick go to "The nameless city". Vance, go to "The Mound" (I don't have much imagination for names!).

You see image of a dark room and grotesque statue, that seems huge: it seems some kind of toad/bat, with a big bellied, but with short fur and closed globular eyes.
Make a sanity roll: if you fail, lose 1 sanity point; no loss if you fail.
Then, you see some pool of dark water starting to form in vaguely human form, just like in some bad movie, but for some reason it affects you.
Make a sanity roll: if failed, lose 1d4, if passed, lose 1 point.

"That's a good idea," says Patrick. "I could look around online and see if I can learn anything about it there. I heard the name from the voice that spoke into my mind, which claimed to be the servant of the sleeper of N'kai. I'm not aware of any technology that could cause that effect. I don't know if anyone else heard the voice too and didn't report it, or if it was just me. If the latter, then your suggestion that something interfaced with my cyberjack is the most logical explanation."

-But what explanation we will give to the rest of the group? And it's better not to tell anything to the university for now about the creature. I will sugest that tomorrow the team who goes to the city, avoids the temple. The creature wasn't hostile, if there was really a creature and it wasn't a some scheme to make you runn. Our two chemist will make all the analyses they can, but we will send all data we have to the university, including some photos of the symbol. Re: All

"I'm not so sure that's a good idea," Vance says.

"If we just try to avoid the dangers, then we'll always be in danger. The best defense is a good offense. If there is a hostile creature, it could stalk us through the city and attack when we least expect it to. We would be safest encountering it in a temple that has already been explored, where we will be completely prepared, will know where it is, and could even have the element of surprise. At the very least, we need to learn more about the creature, because the worst dangers are the ones we don't understand.

If it was just a scheme, then that would be all the more reason to go back. If a modern crew set it up, it means they are protecting something they don't want us to find, which means it is probably something we would very much like to find. For all I know, the city builders designed some elaborate trick of the light, in which case the scary creature is actually an important find."

Re: All

Posted: Thu Dec 10, 2009 4:46 pm
by kabukiman
-That's an idea. But Mr Vance, we are not professional soldiers and that could be dangerous. Of course it would be excelent if you could catch the creature to be examined, but it isn't worth the risk of losing you.

Re: All

"Yes, we do need to know what exactly we saw before we even think of going back into the temple," says Patrick. "It didn't leave the temple to pursue us, but I don't know whether it can't leave or it simply chose not to do so. Online is probably the best place to find information way out here. I can look around discreetly later and see what I can find. For now, let's eat."

Re: All

"I appreciate your need for safety, professor, but in that case perhaps we had better avoid the city altogether until we feel that we know enough about the creature to confront it. Perhaps we can focus on the mounds until our research pays off.

Its your decision in the end."

"Professor," says Patrick. "I found out on the Net that there's a book that mentions N'Kai. It's a mythical land where strange gods are said to be sleeping, and the book said that one day they would awaken and destroy humanity. It was stolen from the book's original owner by a man who called himself Armand Duillon who belonged to some sort of cult. The book is called something like Liber Ivonis. It doesn't exist on the Net, but Miskatonic's library has a copy of a book with a similar title that could be the same book. It's called the Book of Eibon, but access to it is restricted. Do you have the authority to have someone back at the University get access the book, or if not, do you know who can?"

-Hi!I'm Martin!
-And I'm Tim!
-And don't forget me, I'm Jennifer!
-Guys, do you mind? It's me who is doing the talk here. As I was saying, I'm Martin from the information science departement; I was leading...
-No, you were not! The deam didn't say anything of that!
-AS I WAS SAYING, we are the team who had to scann and investigate the book. Well, let me tell you it wasn't easy. I mean, the librarian didn't wanted to burrow the book, he said it wasn't suposed to leave the library because it was dangerous and the dean had an heated discussion with him. Then, we scanned it- I'l send the files right away. When we started to read it, we didn't understand what was the problem. It seemed a book of fantasy, like the lord of the rings, only weirder. In its form, it's some kind of diary, written by a guy called Eibon from Hyperborea. In the case you don't know, its a mythical land in the north. Well, it seemed this guy was born in a city called Commoriom; you must already notice that all those name have latin or greek connections. Well, he was a sorcerer and friend of Zhothaqquah- this name is not latin, seemed someone was typing random in the keyboard. Well, I got a huge headache reading the book, the rest was full encantantions, and descriptions of the fauna and flora of places he visited. The strange is that it describes the conditions of the early Pleistocen. The society described seems to be some mixture of bronze age, iron age and Dungeons & Dragons. Since the publication of the book is from the early XX century, I guess someone has written it, but without a market, was quickly forgotten. No, wonder, its badly writen, and there are lot's of parts missing. Probably the author could't afford to print the entire book, just a part of it.

It's a shame parts of the book were missing, but we have to make do with what we have. I doubt the author only published part of the book. It's more likely that the copy you've got is missing some pages. I'll read the scans myself when I get the chance. Did you find any references to N'Kai when you read it, or to the sleeper of N'Kai?"

-Well, no, but the books tell that Zhothaqquah was usually found sleeping in mount, let me se... Voormithadreth. Another strange name. And this Zhothaqquah must be incredible hugly because it is describes as having a toad head, with a big body and belly. It says he will leave mount Voormi... something if he will be forgoten, to go to the place where the other old one lives and return only when his place is again visited.
I have already sent the scann. About the spell, there is nothing useful. I mean, they don't teach you how to make gold or atract a girl. Only strange things as calling the formeless servitor of Zhothaqquah (that guy must be dead a long time!) making him obey to you or call Zhothaqquah himself.

"I have some questions.

Is it a complete scan of the book, or just relevant passages?

More importantly, what sort of connection could a twentieth-century work of fantasy have to an ancient archaeological dig and an animal alive right now?

While we're at it - I just saw the video, but "formless" does describe the animal. Maybe the fantasy author was basing his novel on some older source that we don't have access to - maybe a nonfiction source that included information on the ancient Greenland settlements. There may be some hidden information in the passages on the "formless"...whatever they were. Odds are slim, but what have we got to lose?"

"Good questions," says Patrick. "Whatever the case, part of the book is clearly missing. It sounds to me like it's a translation from the original, which was called Liber Ivonis. That sounds vaguely Latin to me, which would probably make the text far older."

Re: All

by kabukiman
-Humm, it could be the same book, Ivonis is indeed latin, it's dative plural, but I don't know the word, must be medieval latin. We made scann of the entire book. So maybe the ancient norses found that civilization and writed about that, mixed with a lot of imagination?

Re: All

Posted: Thu Jan 28, 2010 3:36 am
by Mr. Handy
"I think Ivonis is a proper noun," says Patrick. "That would explain why you haven't heard of it. It's the name of the narrator of the book, which was translated to Eibon. Latin wasn't the language of the Vikings, and Rome had already fallen before they had their heyday, but some of them might have picked it up after converting to Christianity. It's also possible that the book is even older, and could date back to Roman times. It's too bad the original isn't around, or we could run some tests to find out how old it is."

"If it was written down in Europe in the Middle Ages, Latin would have been the language of choice, especially since the writer would likely have been a monk - the Viking warriors weren't big on writing things down. Or at least that's my undergraduate opinion, Patrick; I'm sure the archaeologists know more. Good digging!"

3 days have passed. The first team has explored two palaces. They now have a good idea of what was the interior of the rich people in this city (but two others palace will be explore yet); they think that the owners were probably nobles. The second team has finish the mound of the bronze warrior (that's the name he has received). They have retired several artefacts, but they still ignore what he was: a great warrior or a king? But at least, the pottery from the mound is similar in it's patern of that from the houses, so the mound was from some time before the city was left. Another mound will be explored, to see if the body is of the same specie.
Mr Handy and Mi-go: bothw receive 2 points in history.
Mr Handy: make a roll of art and receive 1d4 if passed.
Mi-go: make a roll and receive 1d4 in archaeology if passed.

Also, I thought you had to roll over your skill to get new skill points, so it got increasingly more difficult. Archaeology:http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/2416627/ Cthulhu Mythos: http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/2416629/ (+4!)

The Inner circle of professors have decide to change the methodology for the next days.
1º Team: Professor Derby will study another mound, close from the other. His team will include Johnny, Mark, Tobias, Ali, George (Carlos, Ali and George don't understand much of archaeology but will be used in the diging), and Vance.
2º Team: Professor Mathieu will continue in the city. His team will include Tanaka and Tobias (who both understand archaeology and art) and a mercenary
3º Team: Professor Ling. She will be with Claire and Anne studing all the artefacts that were found.
4º Patrick will work online trying to crack the writing, with several linguistics in the university.
So Vance, return to the Mound
Patrick, stay in this thread.

You see 3 generic avatars in the university.
-Hi!It's me Martin again!
-And us!(says a a girl and a boy)
-So we have here a programme to decode that language, but Jennifer here had a briliant idea. She says that maybe that book in the library is the same as the scroll. Of course, it's impossible, but trying to decode a language we don't know is impossible. As soon we see she is wrong (she protests), we can start another methode.

Re: All

by Mr. Handy
"Good to see you again," says Patrick. "It's possible that both the book and the scroll are in the same language. We don't really know where the book comes from, but you never know. If the characters look similar, then they could be from the same alphabet. It's worth a try."

Re: All

OOC: Mr Handy, now you will have to use the programm they give to you and it's in newjava. Each success will give you some results, and it's time takes one hour to work (whateaver you have success or failure). Of course, after 5 hours, you will need to rest, or you will starting to make con rolls.

Re: All

OOC,Woohoo! 8-) I did it! I'll wait until you give me the results from my first success before I make further rolls.
Though Patrick's NewJava is a little rusty, he manages to write adequate code and begins using the program to translate the writing. After an hour, he has some results.

Re: All

You discover that there are some words that match in the two texts by the place they are and the number of times they appear: Eibon, Commorium, Zathaqua, Hyperborea, White Worm.

Re: All

Posted: Thu Mar 11, 2010 3:02 am
by Mr. Handy
"We're on the right track," Patrick reports to the others. "The book and the scroll do look like they're related and have the same language. The name Eibon occurs in both, and it's in the book's title. They also both frequently mention Commorium, Zathaqua, Hyperborea, and White Worm. I'm going to dig a little deeper and see if I can make some more headway."

Patrick resumes his work. He is very slow to make more progress, and a couple of hours go by without further results. His work drags on, and soon he is too tired to continue for now."I haven't been able to crack it yet," he tells the others. "I've been at this too long. I think I need to take a break and get something to eat. Maybe once I've had a chance to rest and refresh myself I'll have better luck."

Re: All

-Yeah, better to eat something too. We will speak with you latter.
Your eyes are hurting you from all those hours. Professor Ling, Claire and Anne speak to you:
-We were thinking that you were in coma or something. So did you discovered anything interesting? Grab a plate and eat this kibble. Do you want vegi, or meat?

Re: All

Posted: Fri Mar 12, 2010 4:31 am
by Mr. Handy
"Meat, please," says Patrick, taking a plate. "I did find out something interesting. It seems that the book and the scroll are related, and may very well share a language. The name Eibon reoccurred in both of them, along with some other names they had in common: Commorium, Zathaqua, Hyperborea, and White Worm. I spent a long time online using a program to try to decipher the language. There's still more work left, but I need a break before I continue."

Re: All

by kabukiman
OOC: The book in the library is written in english; the scroll is in another language unknow, but you found some words that match. What you are trying to do, is see if you can get more words that match, and decipher the language this way. But since the grammair is different, in the original text a word could be written in different ways (that's called declinaison and it's a true nightmare believe me...) or could have several words with the same meaning.

-Since the book was written in english, it means that's a translation from english? But you should have found more words to match!

Re: All

Posted: Sat Mar 13, 2010 10:35 pm
by Mr. Handy
OOC,Okay, thanks.
"I will find more words, I'm sure," says Patrick. "I think the book might be a translation of the scroll into English, or at least part of it. I'm hoping we can translate it back, but this sort of thing takes time. The words I found were mostly proper nouns, so other words will be more difficult to match."

"I need someone to keep trying to call Vance," says Patrick. "I can't get through to him. Maybe he's just underground in the mound and it's blocking the signal, but something could be wrong over there. Can you send someone to run down there and warn him about the danger? In the meantime, the mercenaries will need to organize our physical defense. I need to get into the matrix and see to our defenses there."

It's still ocupied.
-Well, if they are going to attack us quite soon, being traveling wouldn't be indeed a good idea. But they were probably just expecting that we didn't have any specialist to defend our comunications; maybe they have send also a small team and we are able to defend us. That should be able to buy us some time, before they attack us again.

Re: All

"Then let's come up with a plan to defend ourselves," says Patrick. "I've got a gun and I'm pretty good with it. Are any of the mercenaries still here at the base camp? Does anyone else here have any weapons or experience fighting? We'll also need someone to draw a map of the camp so we can help plan things out."

"The four of us will be doing most of the fighting, but it will be helpful if the others have a chance to defend themselves. I already have my own pistol. Now we need to plan our defense. You three have military experience. I can help some, but my combat experience is limited to virtual reality games. This is my first taste of the real thing."

Re: All

Patrick can't think of much else that would help with defending the camp. "We'll need people to act as lookouts," he says, "so that we can see the enemy coming. Once you see them, you can signal everyone by firing a shot. I can be one of the lookouts."

Re: All

Posted: Fri Apr 16, 2010 11:04 am

-Is that a good idea, firing a shot? This way we are warning them that we are armed and pretend to resist. It would be better if they thought we were just passive.

Re: All

"Maybe you're right," says Patrick. "It might make them back off instead, but it would give away our position too, and that's not good. Do you have some other means of communication, like my phone?"

Re: All

"If you have phones too," says Patrick, "we can use them to keep in touch with each other and our headquarters here. Someone with a phone can stay here, and the rest of us who are acting lookouts can each take a phone. When we see something, we'll call it in. Then whoever's here will call the rest of us and let us know."

Re: All

"Okay, if we've only got two phones," says Patrick, "then all of the lookouts will have to stay near each other. Let's get moving then. The enemy could be here any minute. Everyone who's coming, with me. We'll find the highest vantage point we can overlooking the area. Where should we take the girls where they'd be safe?"

Re: All

They seem to scream a lot, and point the guns, but nobody is hurt. One seems distressed after talking with one of the professors and he give some orders to his man, and a group of 4 goes to your direction (it's the same direction of the mounds and the city). But they are quite relaxed, like if they don't expect anybody near you.

OOC: Ok, Mi-Go hasn't answered fo some time, so I will npc his character.

You receive a call.

Re: All

"Eight armed men have arrived by helicopter and taken over the camp," says Patrick. "I'm with a couple of the guys who can fight in the hills north of camp, and we've got the girls with us to keep them safe. Four of the men split off and they're heading north, but I don't think they've spotted us. They're either heading for the mounds or the city. You may want to avoid them on your way back. We can regroup and then come up with a plan."

Re: All

Re: All

by Mr. Handy
"Good to see you," says Patrick. "Now's the best time to do something, while their forces are split. There are four men in the camp now, and the other four have gone off to the north. I have a gun and know how to use it, but you and the mercenaries have the combat experience. I fought off their attack in the matrix, but this is the first time I've been in a battle in the real world. Have you got a plan?"

Re: All

Posted: Wed Apr 28, 2010 10:47 pm
by Mi-Go Agent
"Can you tell us more about them? Did their attack in the matrix give any clues about them?

I'm more of a close-quarters fighter. I think we should attack the ones in the camp fast and take their helicopter, then use it to go after the four headed north. If the girls don't want to fight, they should look out to make sure the four that went north are not coming back," Vance says quickly but calmly.

Re: All

by Mr. Handy
"I tracked the runners who attacked in the matrix back to Detroit," says Patrick, "so they're not part of this crew, but they both work for the same people. They timed their attacks to happen at around the same time. I got an anonymous warning online shortly before the attacks came. Whoever warned me had an avatar of a blurred figure of an old man. Those are very hard to come by. He had been monitoring a corporation he didn't name when he stumbled across information about the attacks and decided to warn me. He said they were trying to cross boundaries man wasn't supposed to, and he said they would attack both in the matrix and the real world. One of the attackers had a lizard avatar, and he was using a stealthed demon program, but stealth doesn't hide you from other runners. I caught him outside the datawall and took him down with my beta flatline. He's going to need a new cybermodem now. Then I saw that the datawall had been breached, and I found the second runner inside trying to crack the encryption on our site's files. I flatlined that one too."

Some time latter the other mer from the city arrives. With all the group together, you decide then to attack the camp. How do you do that?

Re: All

Posted: Wed May 05, 2010 10:20 pm
by Mi-Go Agent
Vance makes sure he has his combat helmet on and weapons ready.
"Ideally, we could sneak into the camp and take out each man one at a time, but they probably were smart enough to post a lookout. Who has the longest range weapon? Really, our only option is to approach the camp until we see the lookout and have the range, then try to shoot him before he calls the others. If the lookout misses us, we'll be in luck. If not, we'll want to scatter as fast as possible, because it will be a straight shootout. There isn't a lot to work with tactically here - snow forts just don't do much against bullets. "

Re: All

by Mr. Handy
"Okay," says Patrick. "Let's see if we can find and take down the lookout first. I'm not very good at sneaking around, but maybe I can spot him. Your crossbow may have the best range unless someone has a rifle, and best of all, it's silent." He checks his pistol and makes sure it's fully loaded. "The lookout might have tried to occupy high ground, so we should check these hills first. Does anyone here know of any other good vantage points on the camp and surrounding area besides the hills?"

Re: All

The camp is in low ground, and the sentinels are perfecly visible in the camp. They are all together, but are not paying attention, they are speaking (screaming) with several teachers.

"We can't do much while they're all together with potential hostages," says Patrick. "We need some kind of diversion that will get one or two of them to split off and go somewhere else where we can ambush them, but not the sort that would make them suspicious. Any ideas?"

Re: All

"If we ambush the other group near here," says Patrick, "the four in the camp would hear the noise of battle. Then we'd have to contend with all eight of them at once. But we could try to follow the trail of the four who left the camp and try to catch them with their guard down. Once we take care of them, we can impersonate them and return to the camp."

Patrick whispers to the others what he overheard. "They've got one of the professors with them to lead them to what they think is going to be a lot of treasure," he continues. "We'll have to be careful that this doesn't turn into a hostage situation. I think maybe the professor is trying to trick them into going into the room where we found that thing. If so, we should see if it works." He looks around to see if the area is familiar while he continues to eavesdrop. He wants to see if they're near that temple.

After some time, you see the temple. The men enter as quickly as possible inside with the the professor.

-Yes, we could try to ambush them as soon as they leave the temple. We will have the effect of surprise on our side.

"All right, let's go," says Patrick. He advances with the others up to the temple, taking up a position leaning against the wall to one side of the main entrance with his gun ready. He tries to hear whatever might be going on inside the temple from where he stands, but he can't hear much.

Actually Patrick, Vance and the others hear very well, as soon as they get near rhe temple. First screams and then shots (and more screams). Then, you see Mathieu running very pale, followed by 3 soldiers leaving the place in panic, two of them without the weapons (and still screams and shots inside until it stops). One of the soldiers is missing.

Patrick points his Glock at the thug who still has his gun and motions for the others with him to do the same. Once they have him covered, he calls out: "Drop your weapon and freeze!"

Re: All

Your companions obey, but the mercenaries continue running and screaming without paying you attention. Only Mathieu looks at you and gets a relief face.
-Your here? So it means everything is ok in camp then! All we have to do is free the others, those soldiers had lock them in a palace near here. I never thought that my plan would work so well.

Re: All

"I had a feeling that's what you were up to when I saw you heading inside," says Patrick. "The camp is still in enemy hands. Four of these goons stayed behind to guard it. We were going to ambush these four, then take their uniforms to fool the rest of them. Let's go rescue the others from that palace, and then we can decide what to do next."

Re: All

-Alright, just follow me.
After some minutes you arrive at one palace. There are familiar voices, you unlock the door, and see your companions who are happy to see you. Then one of the soldiers appears and when he sees yo, he surrender.

"Well, we've got this perfectly good palace here," says Patrick. "it would be a shame not to use it. We can lock this guy up inside, but first we should question him. Vance, you should search him. Make sure he has no concealed weapons and see what else you might find on him that's useful."

You find a Dai Lung Streetmaster (medium pistol), a Arasaka Minimani 10 (medium machine gun), a knife, 2 grenades, protective googles, a medium armour jacket, no radio in his helmet (probably have a cyberlink). He doesn't have any ID, or any personnel objects. And he is still afraid, even relieved to be with other people.

"This is some nice gear," says Patrick. "Vance, I'm sure you can use a lot of this stuff." He turns to the prisoner. "Now, we've got some questions for you. You can either talk to me, or you can talk to Vance. Vance is a great guy, don't get me wrong, but he won't be anywhere near as gentle as I am. First of all, who do you work for and why are you here?"

Re: All

-I actually don't know. I answered an advertise, there was a fixer who made all the deal. We had to bring our own gear. But the chief of the group in camp heard some rumors, that it was a big company.

Re: All

Re: All

-He just presented him as Marv. It was suppose to be a easy job. We were to arrest some bunch of professors, get all the stuff they discovered and go away. No risks, no problems. Nobody talked about... Jesus, what was that thing in that old building? And what city is this? Where is everybody?
The soldier starts to be nervous.

"I don't know what that thing is," says Patrick. "I saw it myself. When we left the room it was in, it either couldn't or wouldn't follow us, so we just left it alone. We've only recently started exploring ourselves, so we probably don't know much more than you do at this point. What does this 'Marv' look like? Also, what's your name, and what are the names of the other guys on your team? What are they equipped with?"

Re: All

-The equipment is similar to mine. I don't know them, we use all codes: my is eagle eye. And the fixer is a white guy, blond, about 30's. But he didn't look or speak as a fixer, he seemed more a corporate.

Re: All

-The name is Jason. In my team there were crocodile teeth a guy with accent from the south, Lion heart an older guy and shark skin; this one started to shoot to the thing and was still there when I run away. I didn't bother with the names of the rest of the group. Say, as soon as I answer your question, could you free me? I don't want to be in jail, I have a clean record.

Patrick locks Jason up inside the palace where they had found the rest of their group. "Okay," he says to Vance. "Now we've got a way back into the camp, so we'll need a plan. We only have one uniform, so maybe the rest of us can pretend to be your prisoners, and we can carry our weapons concealed."

Wearing the camouflaged jacket and face mask taken from the imprisoned mercenary, Vance leads his captives towards the four mercs. He starts to cough and waves at the four when he comes fairly close. "We´ll take them out when they come to help...", he whispers. He bends down to fake being troubled by the cough.

Vance almost chokes as he realizes his error. "Move it!" , he barks at the prisoner leaning towards him, waving the handgun in his face. "Sure...", he breathes through his teeth.

He watches the two smokers and the two by the camp. "OY!", he hollers, hoping to get some instruction on where to move the prisoners. Praying in his head that he´s playing the role of hardened mercenary well enough.

The two smokers don't even look at you. The other stop the conversation and one says:
-You have take your sweet time to get here. And why didn't you answer my calls? We have new instructions: we are supposed to find some kind of book. Did they find any?
-Screw the book- says one of the other mercs- did you find any gold?

Vance shakes his head from behind the captives, "Zip, nada..." He directs the hostages towards one of the larger tents. (From the previous search of the place.)
Then he comments on the radio incident. "Dropped [cough] the comms in the scuffle with these tourists." He points at the location he came from in case someone offers to get it for him. He closes the tent flap and says, "Stay there and no one will get hurt." "Now let´s get that gold!", he barks - finishing with a cough.

Since you are supposed to be a military group, you take less time than the usual in the walk. But it's starting to get dark.
After a while, you hear the usual story: screams, shooting, more screams, more shooting, (surprisingly nobody runnes away), more screams, and finally silence.

"The rest of the mercenaries have been dealt with by some entity locked into the temple. Those who survived were fleeing head over heels out in the wild. " He pauses, "That means only two men left. We can carry some stuff back to them and let them have a look at the loot. Then we take them down - giving them a chance to put down their guns." "At this point, I rather not enter the temple as everyone who entered started shouting and shooting. The last two of them never got out." "You got your weapons ready? Is this location the casue of the climate shift? If so we should send in some heavier cavalry to deal with the anomaly. We seem too small to have any effect.
"I say we seal this whole site and bury it in ice. Any suggestion how to accomplish that? Man, I don´t need to get no scrolls from some creepy old city. Man, let´s skip this cold hole."

OOC: The objectives of the expedition were:
1º Discover who built the city (vikings, inuits or any other)
2º Discover it's cultural signification and relevance (I read it in a an archeology book, didn't invented)
3º Recover the maximum artifacts to make trends of fashion
4º Elaborate a cronology of the city.

By the way, you may want to read this dialogue you "had" in the mound...
http://www.callofcthulhu.org.uk/viewtop ... 4&start=80

Of course, all this was before the attacks and to discover the "thing", so things may change...

One of the professors heard your words and then says:
-Bury the entire site? Don't you think you are overeacting? All we have to do is avoid the temple. The others parts seem to be safe.

"Well, we've made a good start," says Patrick. "That chest we brought back from the ruins is a significant artifact, and it may provide us with more clues. "That might be true. Let´s stay clear of the temple and do some further cursory documentation. I saw a projection over at the mound earlier. Before the mercs arrived. There was a recording from another organization. It told about lost Atlantis and wizards and such. It seems someone wants us to believe this is a fairy land. Let´s see if we can bring back enough samples to run tests on - then we can determine if the time line is a match for the tales of myths." He waits a little then adds. "I didn´t find any projector though. It looked like a hologram, evidently the organization is well funded."

"The mound sounds like a good place to start then," says Patrick. "If we can find this projector, that may give us some more leads. The scientists should also examine this chest thoroughly for any indication of its origin."

"Well, we can´t do much in our exhausted state. I´ll take the first watch. Sweet dreams, all!" Vance pats Patrick on the back.

You all sleep well and recover 1 HP.
The weather is getting worse, with dark clouds appearing and the temperature is droping: 5º celsius (41º fahrenheit).

OOC,That leaves me at 9 out of 11 HP.
Patrick eats breakfast and gathers his gear. "Okay," he says. "Let's see if anyone wants to come with us out to the mound."

OOC: By the way, the teachers ask that you warn arkham so youthey may send help.
Nobody shows much entusiasm. Just Professor Derby (who wants to see if he can bring someting more from the the place) and Tobias accept.

OOC,Yes, we'll contact Arkham. We could have done that last night, actually, if they told us then. Maybe they can also send someone to take the captured mercs into custody so we don't have to keep babysitting them. There's also Jason that we left locked up in the ruins. We can put him with the others in the meantime.

You contact Arkham that get's very worried, and they promiss to contact the police imediatly to send help. You take care of the (survivant) mercs and go to the mound. You arrive after a smal trip and put away the materials you put to hide the hole in the ceiling.

Vance shows the way through the mound. Then down the holes they climbed and repelled earlier. Finally after several descents they arrive at the sarcophagi and finally finds the wooden statue where the projection was seen.

When you touch the statue, the image of the man that Vance saw before, materialize before your eyes. He starts talking... in a language that you don't recognize but you still understand somehow.
-So, you have come back? Have you decide to learn about some spell? I have a huge knowlege, and was considered one of the mightiest wizard of all time, even before I killed the worm.

"Cool," says Patrick. "It's like something out of a fantasy game in the matrix." He has to check for a second to make sure he isn't still in the matrix. He carries out a throrough inspection of the room, trying to locate the source of any transmission or anything else out of the ordinary.

Re: All

You don't find any transmission here. You barely have a signal.
-So scholars from other lands, what is that you require?

"Okay," says Patrick, thinking. "There are some things we would like to learn about this place, and about the ruined city nearby. We wish to know who built it and why, and to learn of its history."

-Oh? So you don't know anything about it? Our civilization was already forgoten?- the pale ghost seem to be sad- all our achievements, our wars and magic finished in oblivion, that's so unfair. Well, I'l tell you everything, so you may revive it's fame.
He stops for a moment like if he was remembering something and then starts:
-Our ancestors come from a nameless continent from the south. They were quite primitive and they found other inhabitants here, of a diferent kind. I don't know who they were or what hapened, only that they weren't human. Our people called itself the Hyperborians and our great capital was Commorium. But we had other great cities: Uzuldaroum with it's great minarets, Leqquan who was so beautiful that you could see its image in the waters of the river and Cerngoth that had the best food. It seems in the old day, when the weather was warmer, Thulas also had people, but it was long before my time and it is been engulfed by the ice. The city nearby was Commorium our capital. It's main godess is, I mean, was Yhoundeh. But their priests don't like us the wizards, stupid folk, they think we are a threat for them. One day the city was abandoned, I think it was the ice. For my deeds, I was still summoned. Then silence. And latter it was diferent kind of people that started to summon me. People like you. You seem to be human, but you are somehow diferent.

"Oh, we're quite human," says Patrick. "Different? I suppose you mean my cyberjack. That's what I use to connect to the matrix. I suppose you don't know about that. It's a vritual world that people have created that exists in networks of computers - machines that can make many calculations very quickly. It might seem a lot like wizardry, but it's made with technology. My name is Patrick, and this is Vance. What is your name? I also have more questions about Commorium. How long ago was it founded, and when was it abandoned?"

-My name is Evagh. I don't know how long I have been engulf by the mists of time. My ancestors built this city when the weather was warm, and all the island was fertile; then the ice caem, and it started to be cold in thye north. Thye city was abandoned after my dead, I don't know how long.
One of the professor says:
-That should mean that the city was founded more than 1.000.000 years ago, and abandoned some hundred thousands of years latter.

Vance takes up a trinket with meters and sensors. A small wheel stirs on the top of the gadget. "Hmm. This is odd. No electrical current detected. This seems to be a spectral illumination. How cool is that!"

He walks up to the illumination and asks, "What were the names of your last summoners, may I ask? I am called Vance, by the way. Pleased to meet you Evagh."

"This is astounding, Professor!" says Patrick. "If that's correct - and testing the artifacts we've found would confirm it - this changes everything! An advanced civilization from that long ago...this is a tremendous find!"

-Yes, but we cannot say we contact some ghost from the past or everyone would laught at us.-says the professor
-The last person to summon me, let me think... his name was Menes from Stygia. Yes, that's it. He wanted help to fight against some red hair barbarian. He looked like you, but he was just of darker skin. I could't help him much, because it's not that I knew spells to fight invasions. I know some nasty spells, but not against an entire people. After that, nobody called me anymore. Was it a long time ago? says the ghost.

Re: All

Patrick returns his attention to the specter. "It must have been," he says. "I've never even heard of Stygia." He thinks of something else. "In the city, we found a temple that contained a bizarre idol shaped like an enormous toad. I heard a voice in my head telling me to start the service that identified itself as the servant of the Sleeper of N'Kai. It appeared out of a pool of dark liquid, taking a man-like form. I took some pictures of everything." He takes out his camera and shows the pictures to the spirit. "Can you tell us what the idol represents, what manner of creature we encountered, and what the Sleeper of N'Kai is?"

Re: All

He looks very surprised with the camera.
-Never saw such a creature! The sleeper of N'Kai? Are you sure? That was an ancient god that used to be worship by our ancestors. Then we stoped doing it. Does that mean the people returned to him after my death? It's name is Tsathogua, and it was said that he was living in mount where the Vormis lived. I never saw him or any image, but I guess it must be some creature that serves him.

"Yes, I am sure," says Patrick. "That does make sense, but what's the Vormis?"

-It's a race of fury savages. Some said that they were once a great civilization but I doubt. Anyway, the nobles hunt them for sport. Did you see any of them?

-Strange? We don't have strange animals, just normal. The voormis are the only different cause they are from an ancient time, when the serpent people ruled the earth.

Re: All

"No, it seems that much has been forgotten of ancient times," says Patrick. "Our written history only goes back about six thousand years, though there are legends of times before that. We don't know how to summon people from ancient times. There are some who claim to be able to channel the spirits of dead, but they're usually consulted to speak to people we knew who have died, whose lifetimes overlapped our own. There are probably some mystics out there who try to contact ancient spirits, but I don't know much about them. Many of these people who say they can contact spirits are frauds, trying to dupe the gullible into giving them money. I don't know of anyone who can really do it."

-Well, that must be sad. Very well, I will teach you then a spell to summon me. I won't explain how to summon other people. It could be very dangerous if you summoned the wrong people. Anytrhing else? I'm getting tired.

"Hmm...", Vance gets suspicious. He pulls Patrick´ arm leading him off a few meters. "We wouldn´t want to conjure up no ghosts or demons, would we?" "Let us leave this place. No matter if it´s real or not. We could report that the site is utterly unstable and dangerous. This talk about ancient races, monsters and deities is chilling my bones, man. When anyone is speaking of God - they then end up speaking of the demise of man - or at least anyone not on the right side of the fence. I say we stop this and at least hit the site with a powerful EMP to end the transmission. Whatever it is..."

He lets go off Patrick and says. "Sorry about that... You were getting a bit too friendly with that program. Have you run an intrusive scan the last minutes? Don´t want to have anyone mucking around with the ´net..."

He gets a gadget up and reads it. "The structural stability of this cave seems sound and the moment."

"I've already checked thoroughly," says Patrick to Vance. He scans again to make sure. "There are no electronics in here except what we brought with us. I can barely get a signal in here. Whatever this is, it's not a program. There's one way to put it to the test, though. We can learn how to summon him and then try it out later in a controlled environment."
