The Scout : Unulaq

Unulaq crept ahead through the brightly lit ice tunnel, his spear at the ready. Twice now he had spotted similar black patches of creeping oil lingering on the icey floor of the tunnel but the Dorset Hunter pressed on.

Then the tunnel suddenly opened up into a large cave with giant icicles hanging from the ceiling. There, again, Unualaq noticed two of the ruby tipped spears lying on the cavern floor. This time however, a brilliantly decorated helmet, the color of the sun sparkled beside one of the spears.

ooc- Spot Hidden.

Unulaq notices a small pool near the far end of the carvern. He spots a scantily clad figure washing her hands in the icy water. As large boulders of ice and long dangling icicles surround the pool's edge, she is mostly hidden from view.

The pool appeared to continue out of Unulaq's line of sight, but the Dorset Hunter could tell that the cavern continues for a short distance further than what he could see. As Unulaq looked closer at the woman, he quickly began to realize that her skin was blue as the arctic sky. She whispered softly as she bathed and it was obvious that she hadn’t noticed Unulaq was watching her.

There was, however another exit more openly situated in the cavern that continued along the same path he was now on.

OOC- Listen check to hear what she is saying.. or you could try to get closer by making a successful Sneak roll.

Unalaq couldn't quite make out what the woman was saying from his distance, and it was too important to leave to chance of possible misinterpretation. He looked left and right again, making sure there wasn't some large, black, looming figure ready to pounce upon him before sneaking in for closer observation (ahem... I mean listening).

Unulaq crept closer to the pool and his worst fears were soon realized... Sitting further into the alcove of the ice cavern was a large black shape of a bear sipping from the cavern pool. The blackness surrounding the bear was unatural and writhed and squirmed before Unulaq's eyes as if thousands of dark maggot-like shapes had taken root in the creatures skin and were fighting with the bear for dominance. Then as the bear lifts it's head out of the water, Unulaq could see the brilliant white fur that lied beneath the terrible blackness; the bright blue soul filled eyes of Nanook, the bear god. Just as Aglakti had said.

As Unulaq got closer, he could hear the blue woman's words as clear as the water from which the shadow bear drank.

Rest Nanook! Let this terrible curse wash away from your spirit. No.... I cannot let you harm her... no matter your lust...

Unalaq positioned himself kneeling behind an ice column to avoid being perceived by the black bear and tried to place the woman. He knew Nanook from all the tales told to him and the tribe throughout the years, but a blue-skinned lady... well, it was alien to him. He picked up a small piece of ice and tossed it into the water infront of the woman to catch her attention and hoped beyond hope that she wasn't aggressive.

The Blueskinned woman's head darts to Unulaq like a startled arctic Hare. Nanook slowly backed away into the small alcove, the black writhing mass of pestilent oil quickly covered the soft white fur and blue eyes of the bear god.

Crouching low, the blueskinned woman shakes her hands at the wrist and her black nails extend another 3 or 4 inches from her fingers. She hisses. ...

Unalaq backed up a step throwing a hand up (palm out) as he said, "I just want to help. Seeing him like that... it breaks my heart." He looks back to the blue-skinned woman and asks, "Is there nothing I can do to help?"

The Blueskinned woan remains crouched and seemingly ready to punce. The Shadow Bear.

There is nothing you can do mortal! Nanook is cursed!

The Blueskinned woman takes a few carefully thought out steps towards Unulaq.

How did you get here? Men from your world are not welcome!

Behind her, the Shadow Bear lifts it's nose to the air and begins to sniff.

"I came with my Shaman. We have come to see if there is some way to lift this blight from our lands. I left her behind for her own safety as I found out what was causing the black oily sludge marks up and down the cavern," Unalaq explained as he started to backstep, trying to keep his distance from the dangerous looking blue female. "Maybe she could do something for him?" he offers hopefully.

Your Shaman? Nooo! It's too soon!

The Shadow Bear continues to sniff the air until he finally catches wind of something. He stands up on fours and opens its massive maw. Black oily strings stretch over its jaws and dark shapes spring from it's mouth as it bellows its battlecry.

Image

WROOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAR!

Then the Shadow bear darts past the blue skinned woman and Unulaq, tearing off down the ice tunnel the Dorset Hunter had come from.

The blue skinned woman quickly begins pursuit calling to Unulaq.

Hurry human if you wish to see your Shaman again.

ooc,It's ok, I don't think Unalaq would have done anything anyway... the bear charging would have probably intimidated him into inaction and uncertainty until the blue lady said something about going after Yuralria.
He also asks, "Once we catch up with him, what are we supposed to do?"

The blue skinned woman races just in front of Unulaq, darting over the icey cavern floor with the grace of a winter swan.

Loki! Who is Loki? If your Loki has done this to my beloved Nanook I will flay him and serve his inards top the Quallipuk.

Unulaq and the blueskinned woman gain some distance on the lumbering bear god. In the Shadow Bear's fury, bits of dark squirming matter drop from the bear and slither for whatever darkness can be found in the the crooks and crags of the ice tunnel.

oc- Unulaq is about 15 ft from the bear and may try to do something. You still have at least a few more miles to run before you reach Yuralria.

"Not my Loki," Unalaq responded... "The Norsemen brought him ... their witches call upon him and bring his curse down upon us. I think he may be disguised sometimes as a black wolf." He kept running to keep up, admiring the woman's poise and grace through athetic excercise. "We have befriended one Norseman who has come to try to stop his bretheren... together, maybe we can find an answer. But if Nanook can't stop his rampage, then I'm afraid there might not be answers for any of us."

Unalaq called out to the great black bear, "Nanook! Stop! This is not you... it is something else forcing you... urging you! You are stronger than this! Fight it!"

He hefts up his spear and waits a moment or two longer to see if the bear has any reaction.

To Unulaq .. The Shadow Bear turns as the Dorset Hunter calls his name. He slows momentarily and a large patch of ethereal blackness sloughs from his face revealing the remnance of the pearly white fur beneath the darkness. The black quickly overtakes him and the Shadow continues pouncing forward, each massive step cracking the ice below his paws like egg shells.

The Blue skinned woman grins nervously and continues her pursuit.

You're getting to him child of the Frozen Rain. Nanook! Stop this! It is the Norsemen you want! The white skinned devils!

The Shadow bear ignores the blue skinned woman's pleas and charges forward through the ice tunnel.

"The great bear of Qilugtûssat, now free of the dogs that once pursued him, but in battle with something more evil. It saddens me to see him bested like this." Unalaq commented in his dash, admiring the situation, though not liking it one bit. He began to wonder if this was the black bear that Aglakti had the history with. "Nanook! You are the mightiest creature of the north. When I was young, playing with the other children, I always played Nanook, the great bear - and the others were the dogs chasing after me, trying to pin me down. I would call upon my inner strength and shake them off with a fury unequalled. I would show them that Nanook was no creature to toy with!" He shouted forward, "Shake it off!"

Unulaq barely notices a shadow shaped figure pass through the adjacent cavern wall. It holds a large shield and spear tipped with a long sharpened crystal (like the ones they found littered on the cavern floor.) It slashes at his the Dorset Hunter and Unulaq is helpless to evade him. Fortunately, the spear glancesoff Unulaq's knee and the hunter's forward momentum keeps him from taking any significant damage.

Image

Unulaq notices that three more shadowy figures pass through the walls and into the cavern ahead of them. Two more from behind. All are armed with the crystaline spears

Neither the blue skinned woman nor the bear god slow down as Nanook trounces forward, black sludge worming and dripping with every pounding paw.

I don't suppose I know anything about them - but I have to wonder why they are attacking me if they target Shamans. Maybe since I am here, they just assume... or maybe since only Shamans come here and die at these things' hands, Yuralria assumed they were Shaman Killers, and not just blood-thirsty beings eager to kill anything in general.
Unalaq noticed the spear when it hit his knee and hop-jumped to keep his balance. Quickly he scanned the area with the mind of a warrior / hunter and looked for a good place where he might be able to defend himself on two or three sides to keep them from surrounding him. With his spear in hand, tip still enchanted by Thorrin, Unalaq prepared to fight against the odds. "Nanook! This is what you smell... right here!" He shouted ahead and hoped to be convincing, because he wasn't sure if he was going to be able to take so many of them.

Unulaq finds what he's looking for. A small twist in the ice cavern left a narrow shelf jutting out from the side of the wall. The blue skinned woman stops with him looking nervously towards Nanook. She readies herself in an agressive stance, her finger nails extending from her hands forming long black claws.

Nanook has her scent. Is there a Shaman with you?

Three of the shadow men quickly close in on Unulaq and the blue skinned woman.

Unulaq watches the bear charge through the shadows, trampling them beneath his weight as if they were children. The Shadow bear continues on down the ice cavern towards Yuralria and Thorrin.

ooc- Unulaq suddenly realizes that these shadow men are not Shaman Hunters. He remembers tales of the Taqriaqsuit. A race of shadow people, normally peaceful, that live both in and out of the spirit world.

Unalaq moved to the narrow shelf for defense, not sure if standing near this blue woman with the suddenly sharpened claws was safe. He responded to her, "I was hoping to fool him into giving up his chase. Yuralria doesn't deserve to die." He watched as these shadow people closed in. "Guess Nanook is no fool. What do the Taqriaqsuit want with us? They're supposed to be peaceful."

The shadows seem to take Unulaq's words to heart as a long silence passes between them. The silence is broken by another defening roar from Nanook followed by the voice of Yuralria screaming at the top of her lungs.

Run!!

Yuralria's voice echoes off the cavern walls. She must still be at least a few hundred meters away.

The Shaman's call causes all three Shadows to turn their head nervously down the tunnel. One turns back and answers Unulaq.

Unulaq races to catch up with Nanook. He hears the others following close behind. In short time he reaches a section of the cavern littered with spears and shield. Black blood crawls across the icey floor in large shivering pools.

The trail of black blood continues on down the cavern.

The Shaman Hunter Corazon stops beside Unulaq before turning back to one of the Shadows.

Image

Your shadows are no match for Nanook. He will hunt and kill the Shaman...

Unulaq, Corazon and the three shadows sprint towards the terrible sound ahead of them. Unulaq hears Yuralria call out to him.

Unulaq I can't!"

Just wake up if you....

Yuralria's words are interrupted by the defening roar of Nanook as Unulaq and the others nearly charge headstrong right into Nanook. The massive infected bear stands on his hind legs and raises his claws high. On the floor are no less than five spears and shields the shadow men had been carrying. Nanook had killed them all and was deep in his battle frenzy.

Nanook roars at the approaching warriors and tiny black squirming magots fly from his mouth and wriggle...

Unalaq had had his moments facing off with fierce creatures fighting to the death in his time, but this was definitely the biggest challenge he'd ever faced. He was nervous before as he hid away from the corrupted bear at a distance - but at this range and dead in the bear's sights, Unalaq nearly forgot to breathe and his heart skipped a beat. But it was no time to freeze up. All his experience led up to this point, and he wasn't about to turn away from it and run like a child.

"Nanook!" he called aloud as his voice could carry. "I know you understand me. We have no quarrel. If you want to get rid of this curse, you must fight your urges. Loki is your enemy, not us!"

He stood firm, spear in hand and ready to strike if the great bear lunged forward. His eyes darted around to look for Yuralria and Thorin.

Corazon joins Unulaq and holds out her own hands.

Listen to him Nanook! You are slave to no god!

Nanook pauses before strinking one of the shadows. It's black claws dripping with sickness, Nanook swats the shadow into nothingness. It's weapon and shield clatter the floor. The bear then turns to look down the hall. It's eyes flashing with bloodlust as it spots its prey. Unulaq can't help but follow it's gaze. He too spots Yuralria and Thorrin for just a brief moment before a shadow pulls Yuralria through the ice wall. Yuralria calls to Unulaq before she phases through the ice.

Unalaq is no stranger to pain. It is a peculiar feeling, this wound... but he does not succumb to it like a baby to its mother's bossom. He growls and resorts to offense. If the bear is uncontrollable and warped by evil, then it should be put down. "May you be happier with the peace you find from the end of my spear!"

The Inuit warrior thrusts his spear bearing the enchanted spear head (compliments of Thorrin) toward Nanook, the great black bear, staring death in the face fearlessly and striking his target square on the mark.

Nanook roars with pain as Unulaq opens the bear gods stomach. Balck maggots pour from the belly of the beast and writhe on the ice like salmon roe from his nets. Nanook swings wildly, blinded by rage and whatever sickness had taken. His paw passes high over Unulaq's head, yet the hunter knows that would have been the finishing blow.

Unulaq hears Thorrin further down the hall begin to sing. As usual, his voice is as beautiful as the sun but this time the Dorset hunter understands every word as if the bard were singing to Unulaq himself.

An eighth I know: which all can sing
for their weal if they learn it well;
where hate shall wax 'mid the warrior sons,
I can calm it soon with that song.

Nanook turns his dark mis-shapen head, the sound obviosuly enraging the bear god.

Inuit Mythos (15%) (1d100=91) - never paid attention to that crap in school. Luck (50%) (1d100=50) - Right on the dot... lucky me. :)
Unalaq begins singing in unison with Thorrin and readies his spear for another attack should the great bear lunge at him again, paying little attention to the blue woman.

naudhiz naudhiz naudhiz
n n n n n n n n n
nu na nu ne no
nudh nadh hudh nedh niodh
(nut nat nit net not)

He had no idea if it would work, but it was at least a bit aggrivating to the creature.

Unulaq sings with Thorrin. The style of Inuit throat whistling Unulaq was used to complimented the Norse tongue quite well. Unulaq had no idea what the effect of the incantation would be in the Spirit World but the brave Dorset hunter sung the Norseman's song with all his heart. To Unulaq's surprise, he matched Thorrin's pitch quite well. The Bear had already begun his charge towards Thorrin when Unulaq started to sing. The Bear stopped in it's tracks and sniffed the air. Unulaq could see a smile on Thorrin's face as he kept up the song changing his own tone to better compliment Unulaq.

Now the bear's head moved from side to side growling softly in harmony with the Dorset hunter and the Viking bard.

The blue skinned Corazon put her hand on Unulaq's shoulder.

You have him hunter! Keep it up! I'll administer the tears.

She then reached into a small leather sac she had tied around her back and pulled out a small crytal drooplet. She began to inch slowly towards the entranced Nanook, careful not to disturb the spell that had bound him.

Then Unulaq felt a sudden sharp burning pain in his chest from where the bear had slashed him. Unulaq could feel his body fading quickly.

Corazon reached for him.

No!

Thorrin ceased his song and drew his sword, calling to his friend.

Unulaq! No!

Then Unulaq awakens suddenly in the Shaman Hutt. Yuralria and Thorrin still lie peacefully, sleeping around the dim fire. Ogtuk-luk, however, looks extremely frightended and concerend. He holds a small stick in his hand whose embers burn brightly and smoulder with the smell of burning flesh.

Please post in Ogtuk-luk's thread next please. Please make a sanity check. If you pass, post normally in Ogtuk-luk's thread. if you fail post here that you failed before posting in Ogtuk-luk's thread.

Sanity Failure,Sanity (53%) (1d100=65)
- and I was doing so good... Am I supposed to post over there now, or is there something else I need to know due to the failed sanity check?

You can post over there now. Unulaq just accessed a dark Norse magic that was completely out of his realm of understanding. He loses 2 Sanity. I'll adjust.

And you open yourself up to this dream sequence:

When Unulaq sings the Norse words, he feels the hands of warrior maidens seductively caressing his mind. The sounds of swords and shields clashing in chaotic unison. He sees the eye of a raven as it soars above his soul. Unulaq sees the connection of the Raven to the one eyed man sitting on his golden throne in the afterlife. Unlaq knows it now as Valhalla. Unulaq also feels as though he is intruding. The one eyed man seems displeased with the Dorset Hunter's participation in the Norse Song, yet welcomes him with open arms.

Before Unulaq suddenly wakes in the Shaman's hut The one eyed man says in a hauntingly beautiful voice.

Know how to cut them,
know how to read them,
Know how to stain them,
know how to prove them,
Know how to evoke them,
know how to score them,
Know how to send them,
know how to send them.

I know an eighteenth that I never tell
To maiden or wife of man,
A secret I hide from all
Except the love who lies in my arms,
Or else my own sister.
