The Hunt for Kalituk (Faroo, Kirima, Kinaktok)

Faroo and Mannitok had expected to catch up to chief Kalituk soon after they departed the Dorset tribe but it seemed the venerable hunter moved with the speed and endurance of the caribou. A blizzard had risen and the wind was against them, so after a few hours of steady mushing, the dogs needed to rest. The morning sun had faded but the snow still lit the plains as the powerful light of the full moon seemed to set each snowflake ablaze, even through the storm.

ooc- Currently on Baffin Island the sun rises at 7:30 am and sets at 111:30 am. It is dark at Noon.

Mannitok was first off his sled and he held his arm over his face for protection from the winds as he shouted to Faroo

The trail will be gone by morning if this keeps up brother! No matter… Kalituk will be forced to light a fire. We’ll spot him.

Mannitok looks up to the moon through the violent sheet of biting cold and snow.

Aningan, the moon god, is strong this day Faroo. I would not want to be a woman, out in this storm.

ooc – Idea roll. It might be an idea to build a shelter around the fire to protect it from prying eyes and to hide your camp from predators. A quick igloo construct can be built in only an hour or so. Was there anything specific you were thinking of an idea for?

The Dorset hunters rest for a few hours. Faroo wakes suddenly to Mannitok shaking him.

Faroo! Wake up! There is something alive on the plains. It walks with an evil shaking motion like nothing I have ever seen. Wake up!

Faroo rises and looks over their shelter. In the distance Faroo can see a large group of men dragging themselves through the snow. The blizzard had stopped and in the moonlight the two Dorset Hunters can make out their silhouettes quite well. They limp and moan and twist in agonizing ways. Some appear to missing arms and most of them are armored with a sort of skin they had seen dressed on the Norseman Thorrin that had visited their village. Thorrin was a friendly enough folk but these things were nothing like their new Viking friend.

What are they Faroo? What should we do?

Faroo had trained with the venerable hunter Qannaq and most of the Dorset hunters respected his words even though he was still considered an adolescent by Dorset standards.

As the figures draw closer Unulaq can see the flesh dangling and rotting from deep wounds all over their bodies. The wounds don't seem to hinder their movement any (Aside from the limping and twitching) Faroo sneaks a peak and spots the white in the eyes of their horror filled faces.

The lead creature moans and calls out to the hunters.

Faroo easily parries a slow moving Viking swordas one of the Undead Norsemen mindlessly attacks the Dorset hunter. He quickly counters, sinking his stone knife deep into the creature’s side. The beast hardly makes a sound as Mannitok jumps to Faroo’s side and lunges his spearinto the zombie’s neck. The Norse abomination falls back to the ground and the two Vikings move in calling out in their native tongue.

ooc- new set of rolls please. (Strike, Parry, damage, damage bonus) plus your actions if any...
Spoiler:
ooc- Yes, all of your rolls were correct. Next time though, I need a damage bonus dice with your damage roll. I rolled it for you this time to keep things flowing. rolled a 1 on 1d4

I.e. if you are using the knife, then you would roll 1d4 plus 1d4 for damage bonus. For your STR plus SIZ attribute modifier.

On the invisible castle website, you can roll all three at one time.

Roll: Strike, parry, damage, damage bonus.

Roll: 1d100, 1d100, 1d4, 1d4

Then if you miss or your attack is dodged or parried, I will just ignore the damage. Also parry is equal to your skill in the weapon. You failed your parry roll but the zombie missed so I just call it a pass for dramatics. Keep up the good work Ash.

Both Mannitok and Faroo press on, stabbing and moving their undead foes. Faroo drags his knife across oen fo the creatures bellies, spilling sea water and bloated intestine onto the snow. Mannitok strikesthe other undead Norseman's thigh and a thick black blood gurgles from the wound with a mind of its own. So furious was the Dorset hunter's attack that they just did not expect the zombie's reposte to be so savage and filled with such a blind hatred for life. One zombie crashes his sword downon Faroo's shoulder. The wound burns as the cold air quickly begins to freeze the blood flowing freely down his arm.

The second zombie in his twisted rage, narrowly misses Maniitok's back as the Dorset hunter turns to help his friend Faroo.

The sound of the dogs barking quickly overpowers that of the battle. From the distance, intermixed with the chime of stone on chain, it takes on a musical quality.

Faroo stabs out with his spear as he makes his way to his sled but the stone tip sinks effortless into superficial rotting meat. The zombie swings in slow methodical arches but Faroo is too quick for the undead. He jumps on the back of his sled expecting to move forward but to the hunter's dismay, his rear dog has sprung to his defense. It lunges forward, sinking it's teeth into the zombified Viking and shakes the dead flesh furiously.

Mannitok has similar problems... He stabs out desperately as he backs into his sled. He grips the push bars and urges his dogs forward but his team had gone feral with lust for protecting their master. The sled slides to the left as the Huskies push their way towards the zombie, nearly tipping the thing over.

The zombies cry out as they push on, snarling and snapping at the air.

Faroo stabs out at the undead Viking and distracts it long enough to get his rear dog back under control. (5 damage) He mushes the dogs forward and his sled begins to move. The zombie reaches for him as he makes his escape but stumbles in his awkward fleshy dance to the snow.

Mannitok holds his spear out in front of him as the zombie presses his attack. The undead Viking’s axe crashes downon the hunter’s spear but the spear holds. He urges his dogs forward calling out to his lead dogs…

Mush Mush Mush!

His dogsbark wildly at their master’s attacker and Maniitok can’t get them under control. As Faroo’s sled pushes forward, Maniitok’s tuns on its side tossing him to the snow, He doesn’t seem to be in immediate danger however as his dogs pounce on the Viking dragging it to the ground in a flurry of fur and snarling teeth.

Re: The Hunt for Kalituk (Faroo)

I'm OK... Faroo! My dogs!

Mannitok rolls to his feet with the grace of a hunter born and bounds to the aid of his sled team. He stabsdown at the creature with all his might but the zombie's thrashing causes Maniitok to lose his aim and the spear digs deep into the snow. The undead Viking grabs hold of one of the Huskies and snaps it's neck before tearing it's head clear off it's body soaking the snow in bright red blood.

In response, two of Maniitok's huskies pull hard on the undead Norseman's arm and the limb separates with a horrific sloshing sound. Faroo can smell the sudden stench of sea water and rotting flesh from his own sled 20 meters away.

Then Faroo notices that the second zombie, that had fallen to the snow in it's attempt to grab hold of his sled, had gotten up and was limping towards Maniitok's backside. Mannitok was in such a frenzy trying to save his dogs, that he was unaware of the danger he was in.

Faroo's spear soars through the night air and lands with a sick sounding KLOOSH! in the zombie head. The zombie stops falls back as a confused look crosses it's face. It mutters...

M... MEL.... KORKA!

It's eyes go dark and it falls back into the snow.

Mannitok's sled dogs tear savagely at the undead Viking until the Dorset Hunter drives his spear into the head of the flailing creature.

Faroo's call combined with Mannitok forces the dogs back under their control. They whimper a few feet from the creature, pleading to their master's to let them continue their feast.

Maniitok looks behind him and smiles at Faroo.

Thanks brother! That was a close one.

The zombie horde passes the two figures lying in the snow as Faroo and Maniitok hide their sleds from view. As they appraoch they quickly notice that the two figures are whitemen. The first, an old woman, hunched over herself and more crooked than a Narwhale's tooth. Her gray matted hair dangles to the snow as she attempts to right herslef. The other figure helps her to her feet. He nearly doubles her height and her girth. His beard made his head look twice its size and gave the man a beastial quality. They'd never seen such hair on a man.... His brown leather hides, studded with shiny metal rings, glint in the powerful light of the full moon. Faroo couldn't help but think the old woman a fool to be out at night with Aningan's moon so high and mighty in the sky. The god of the moon despised women and was most powerful on these strong lunar nights.

When the bulky Norseman lifted the witch he turned and saw the Dorset Hunters approaching.

Now, just over a 100 feet away, the old woman straightened her back and then hunched back over... dragging her finger through the snow.

Maniitok looked wide eyed at Faroo as both Hunters were sure they could hear the old woman cackling.

The two Dorset Hunters rest with their captive. After a short confusing exchange of Norse words and frantic hand gestures, Faroo and Maniitok conclude that the Vikings name is Oddlog and he was separated from his unit. The old woman he was with was named Melkorka and she abandoned him to whatever fate the Inuit hunters have instore for him. He seems strangely confident and unfrightened of Faroo and Maniitok and behaves more politely and reserved for a Viking barbarian.

Maniitok binds his arms and takes the Viking's sword and long dagger. He inspects the weapons and smiles at Faroo.

Four of six of Mannitok's dogs lie dead and bloodied as the other two feast on their carcasses. One of them looks up and snarls before charging to the full length of his reins. He yelps as he runs out of rope and is choked suddenly back.

This allows Faroo to get a better look at the dogs. Skin and tuffs of fur, damage beyond any dog fight, peels of their flesh like skin from a rotting seal. It's eyes are crazed and blood shot and ribs protrude from the dog's side.

Image

He barks madly at Faroo and mannitok before returning to feast on the slaughtered dogs. Faroo's sled and dogs remain suspiciously quiet throughout the whole scene. As if all the dogs just lied down and sat still, shivering with fear as the dogs were torn to pieces.

By Sedna's fingers...

Even their Viking captive Oddlog is horrified.

Mannitok helps Faroo kill the infected dogs. WHile the two are busy with their spear work, they turn and see Oddlog still seated at the fire. This had been the perfect opportunity for the bearded Viking brute to run, but he had not.

After the carnage is completed, Mannitok inspects his Faroo's dogs. One of them has a bite mark on his fur and another has three long clawed scratches running down the length of his hind leg.

Mannitok looks at Faroo and grimaces.

Of Faroo's eight dogs, only six of them remain unscarred. All of Mannitok's sled dogs were dead. His dogs could pull one sled holding both of their supplies, or one person. Mannitok looks back to Faroo.

Maybe the bites were old wounds and they opened during the fight. Or maybe they fought off the infection. I don't know if we can afford to kill off two more dogs.

Mannitok looks at the two dogs, scratching his head.

What should we do brother? It will be morning soon and we will need to take adavantage of the dwindling light. We could bind Oddlog's hands and put him on the sled. But the dogs.... What if they turn on us!

The bearded Viking begins to rummage through Mannitok's sled as the two Dorset Hunters make their next move. He quickly finds some seal meat and wolfs it down, hardly taking the time to chew. He grins at Faroo, content with what looks like his first meal in days.

Enjoy that did you? smirks Faroo.

You are right my friend we need to do something. I think we should kill those two infected dogs, bind his hands so he can't eat aby more supplies and press on in the direction of those zombies we saw. Lets make haste. We could send that Viking on his way but something tells me we will need him. We must make light of our supplies. It's the only way to find our Cheif.

Mannitok sneers at Oddlog as he takes the seal meat from Oddlog's hands. His good nature gets the best of him, however, and he hands over a large piece. He flashes a guilty look to Faroo.

We'll have to hunt soon anyways... I'll deal with the dogs.

With a suttle sadness, Mannitok seperates the sled dogs and inspects them all thoroughly. Then with two sharp motions he executes the two infected animals.

Oddlog does not object to the bindings and seems happy to cooperate in whatever the Dorset Hunters require of him.

When the group turns in the direction the zombies were headed, Oddlog gets excited and shakes his head shouting at Faroo and Mannitok.

Faroo could normally tell a Dorset Fire from that of any naturally occuring fire or someone untrained in firebuilding techniques, but he just couldn't put his finger on this one.

The fire had smoke characteristics of both skilled and natural fires but Faroo could not explain the sudden thickness building in the smoke..

Mannitok looked similarily confused, though he hadn't had half of Faroos training in such matters.

Mannitok looks to the smoke in the sky.

But...

He then nods and agrees.

I'm sick of all this madness too brother. Let us return home and find ourselves a nice fat woman to curl up with.

Either way, the captive Viking Oddlog seems happy that the two Dorset Hunters are turning away from the sea.

He smiles before curling up with the supplies on the last remaining sled.

The travel is slow, but the Hunters finally arrive back at their village before the days end. The night sky is clear and the landscape is lit by the brightness of the full moon. Few Dorset figures walk the paths between the hutts. All of the dogs have been brought inside whcih is very strange and certainly out of character for the tribe.

Faroo and Mannitok are surprised to see the village so quiet; even during the full moon, when women tend to stay indoors for fear of angering the moon god Aningan. No fires are lit, save one.... and that can only be seen from within the village. The Shaman's Hutt fire burns brightly.

There also seems to be some activity in the Elder's Hutt as low murmers can be heard from where Faroo and Mannitok stand beside their sled and the now slumbering Oddlog.

Oddlog doesn't resist and follows Faroo and Mannitok happily, smiling a dumbfounded grin the entire way.

Mannitok parts the flap leading into the Elder's hut and is surprised to see his Sister sitting on a polar bear rug in front off the Elders. Their parents are watching, seated along the side of the Hutt. Faroo hears Sashila's last comment before he interrupts.

The Black Wolf did nothing.... I do not remember what happened at the Weasel River Elder Pamiruq...

Sashila bows her head shamefully.

Elder Pamiruq looks to Faroo and his eyes widen as he spots the Viking lumbering behind the Dorset Hunters.

http://www.callofcthulhu.org.uk/viewtop ... =98&t=1377
THE ENCOUNTER,IN short... Sashila ran off in search of her love interest Tornuaq. Unulaq and Faroo went after her and found her floating on a kayak in a semi comatose state on the weasel river. (The river was flowing backwards up and into the mountains btw) They could not get her attention until Unulaq hit her in the head with a snowball. Sashilla fell into the freezing water and Unulaq dove in to rescue her. He dragged her out and then the two started making out in their crazed delirium. Faroo got to watch the whole thing as they both quickly lost control of themselves and started having extremely rough and animalistic sex right in front of Faroo. Sashila was calling out Tornuaq’s name the entire time. (Not Unulaq) After Unulaq and Faroo saw the black wolf on the river’s edge. Faroo promised Sashila and Unulaq that he would not say anything as they were both shamed by the event. Unulaq for seemingly raping Sashila and Sashila for going along with it when she was in love with Tornuaq. By the way they went at each other, Faroo is suspicious that something very strange was going on.

Elder Pamiruq nods..

You are too hard on yourself boy. Kalituk is a wisened hunter. It was not likely you could find him if meant not to be found. He has turned his back on his people. We must move forward in this time of...

The Elders' eyes then turn to the Viking standing behnd him.

You bring another pale face into our village? I am glad, however that this one is bound ansd submissive. For what purpose do you bring your prisoner here before the council Faroo?

Faroo then spots Qannaq( His mentor) in the back of the hut. He frowns at Faroo and his attention then turns back to Sashila.

Qannaq quickly takes the opportunity and steps forward from the back of the Elders Hut.

Qannaq laughs... I imagine you could young one.. But you will need to hunt a great white bear before you can pick up the white spear and claim the right to rule the tribe. The Elders would support you if you wished to try such a thing. Unulaq is their first choice, but his friendship with the Norseman and his ties to Tornuaq make the Elders suspicious. Arrluk is their third choice. He has killed a polar bear but they fear he lost too much when he fell in the river so many ago.

Faroo and Qannaq find the Thule boy Tongusak with an elderly Dorset Couple. He spots Faroo and smiles running to his side, obviously thankful for a familiar face. His pet fox, sleeping by the dim light of the weakened fire, opens a tired eye. (Bright fires were doused so as not to give away their location to the Vikings)

Oh thank the godess! Faroo! Is everything OK? Where is Yuralria. She promissed she would never leave me.

ooc - You are not yet in the Elder's hut but the Dorset Hunter assigned to care for Torngusac has some tobacco and offers it up to Faroo. Qannaq also packs his own ivory pipe and waits patiently.

Faroo spots something very strange. The fox that Torngusac has been keeping as his pet looks momentarily at Faroo before quickly turning away. Faroo swears that the creatures eyes are red and that can mean only one thing. The Thule boy's pet fox is an Ijiraat.

- you should have added 15 to your mythos skill. It's still a fail though...

Faroo can remember little of what his Elders have taught him of the Ijirraat. He can vaguely recall a battle he had recently where they were attacked by wolves with red eyes, baring the symbol of some Viking god. One thing he is sure of however, the fox was no ordinary fox. It was an Ijiraat.

The Ijiraat are the shape-shifters. These land spirits are elusive and can transform into any arctic animal to disguise themselves. Most often they take the shape of a raven, bear, wolf or even a human. The only part of the Ijiraat that it cannot disguise is its red eyes. In all of it forms, both human and animal, its eyes always remain red. These hidden creatures are portrayed as evil and malicious in many stories. These stories warn that the Ijiraat lie in wait for lone travelers, changing shape to fool and get close to the travelers. Some elders argue that these land spirits and are not inherently evil, but rather misunderstood. Although many interpretations of the Ijiraat exist, one thing seems to be certain: After an encounter with the Ijiraat people tend to experience memory loss and quickly forget the details of what happened.

Faroo walks with Qannaq back to the Elder's hutt, bringing the Thule boy with him as instructed.

Many of the Dorset people are now gathered in the large Elder's Hutt. When Faroo enters the Hutt a silence washes over the excitable crowd. Oddlog, Faroo's Viking captive looks to Faroo with hopeful eyes. The Viking barbarian had not been harmed in Faroo's absence but the look of fear permeating through Oddlog's every movement reminded the Dorset Hunter of a snared wolf.

Elder Makittuk rises and nods to Faroo as he took his place amogst his people.

Image

Sit Faroo. Is the boy ready?

Torngusac nods and then Faroo tells the Elders of red eyed dog.

Elder Pamiruq shakes his head.

Image

We don't have time to deal with malcontent spirits in the wake of this attack on our lands. Qannaq.... Find this Ijiraat and deal with him as you see fit.

Qannaq quickly rises and exits the tent.

Elder Makittuk then addresses Faroo.

Oddlog seems more relaxed when Faroo begins his questions. Torngusac takes the hint quickly and begins to translate the burly Viking's words as he speaks them. Every so often the Thule boy scratches at the Viking rune carved on his forhead.

Oddlog spits suddenly at the mention of Melkorka.

Image

That witch of a whore... She is up to something. We all thought we were here on another one of Captain Gunharr's campaigns. He gets all the good ones... Storm the shores... Take what we want... Our job was to hold the South Eastern Shores of Helluland until the king arrived. Then we were hit by...

Oddlog stops...

Demon Whales!

Oddlog looks around the room judging the Dorset tribe's reaction to the Vikings response. Loud murmors of Ijiraat and spirit whales bouce around the Elder's Hutt. Oddlog continues.

Only ten of us made it shore. Those gods be damned beasts tore our ship to splinters. The rest died in those bloody waters. We all wanted to wait by the water.... Set a fire! Maybe the king's dragon boat would be closer than we thought, but Melkorka pushed us on... That dirty old cow! Melkorka's got her beady little bitch eyes set on a rune she says is in these mountains.

When Captain Gunharr rose from the dead with his army of drowned Vikings left from our ship. I ain't lying for sure as Hel. One of them was me friend Hildegarr. I saw with me own eyes as a giant whale swallowed him whole for sure I did.

Anyways... Melkorka's a bitch. She'll put a hex on yah! Put her old hag finger in your ass and twist it for giggles. That bitch!

If all of the invaders are as stupid as this one, we will have little trouble hunting them.

Edler Makittuk scoffs.

Image

Do not forget Pamiruq... that there are spirt users amongst these Norsemen. Men and women of great magic and understanding of this world. Those like our Viking friend Thorrin and these foul witches. I fear great evil is upon us.

One of the hunters drags Odlog off to the side.

Faroo's spots his friend Mannitok flash Oddlog a murderous look before turning his head down back to his Elders.

Image

What are we to do then Elders... Do we leave the village and flee into the mountains... Do we hunt these Barbarians.. Or do we do nothing as we always have and hope the godess brings peace to us on a sled pulled by Ijiraat dogs?

Elder Makittuk rises and waves his finger to all the Dorset men standing in the hut.

Elder Pamiruq pokes his son in the ribs and smiles whispering loud enough for all to hear.

If you had half the guile of this woman Kinaktok, you would be chief by now.

Then the Viking barbarian Oddlog stirs slightly lifting his head quizically to Faroo and rubbing a large goosegg that had formed on the top of his head where the Dorset hunter had smashed him into a short slumber. He mumbles something in Viking and the Thule boy who had acted as translator hesitates to translate Oddlog's words.

Kirima feels like an age passes after Kinaktok speaks. The fire dies in her eyes. "Once again, I apologise for my emotion, frustration consumes me!"
"Kinaktok," she licks her dry lips, unsure of herself now, "what would you do with ...it."

"Well, why don't we feed him? He was complaining about himself being hungry, wasn't he?" Kinaktok suggests, hoping at least someone would agree with him.

"It's possible he might tell us more."

"Food?"
Warming to the idea: "Gruel from the pot, we could feed it with that."

An excellent idea daughter! states Elder Makittuk.

Elder Pamiruq interjects.

I beleive that was my son's plan Makittuk! Give credit where credit is due I say.

Elder Pamiruq beams at his sons initiative.

Oddlog says something else in his native tongue and the Thule boy Torngusac, with his magical gift of Nordic comprehension, shakes his head.

Should I even bother translating his curses?

Then the Viking's eyes follow Kirima as she moves towards the stew pot. Drool pours from his mouth as she dishes out a bowl. He holds out his hands pleading to the Doset woman.

"I hope this works."

Listening to the Elders' arguement a faint rouge appears on her cheeks; but she does not speak up to support Kinaktok.

"Urrgh! The beast is disgusting." Twisting her head to one side and wrinkling her nose she says, "What to do? Feed it first; or ask questions first?"

The hairy Viking brute holds up his hands and looks at Kirima with dull sad eyes. He mumbles something in his native tongue and the Thule boy, Torngusac, with the rune carved on his face sees fit to translate the Vikings words.

Oddlog will tell you whatever you wish to know. He begs you Karima... He has not eaten in two days. He will pledge himself to whomever takes him in.

Tongusac chuckles... and speaks plainly..

Like a sled puppy... Hee hee hee!

Oddlog mumbles once more. A single tear drips down his face and hides in his thick grizzly beard.

His people have forsaken him.

She looks from Torngusac to Oddlog, with a thoughtful, calculating expression upon her face. She says to Torngusac, "Tell it, 'Pledge yourself to me: Kirima!'" And promptly spoons the stew into Oddlog's mouth.

Oddlog slurps the stew and then falls to his belly feverishly kissing Kirima's feet. The display is embarassing and many of the Dorset men gathered in the Elder's hut snicker and point at the display of affection.

Oddlog, however, had abondoned his dignity long ago on the cold snowy plains of Baffin Island. He looked up to Karima with grateful eyes and hugged her legs.

Karima's father, Elder Makkituk had had enough of this. He stood and pulled the Viking off his daughter and gave him a few gentle disciplinary beatings with his whale bone club.

Oddlog snarled at the Elder and then returned his attention back to Karima and her stew. Knowing that Torngusac could translate, Oddlog looked directly at the Thule boy and spoke his mind.

Torngusac relayed the message

The Norseman thanks you for your kindness. He will tell you what you wish to know.

Oddlog pulls the bowkl out of Karima's hand and answers Faroo. Torngusac translates as best he can as the Viking mumbles with a mouth full of Kirima's stew.

I told you Skraeling! Slurp! The old bitch left me when you and your square headed friend found us in the snow.

Mannitok scowls at the insult... but Torngusac continues translating.

We were heading for the mountians. She is after the Odin's Rune and could give a squirt about me or any of my kinsmen. Slurp! It was supposed to be a secret, but I heard her cackling about the rune with the bard Alrik. Slurp! Our gods hid the rune here and we're looking for it. All the other Vikings just think we're on another rape and pillage of the new world. Slurp! Slurp! Slurp! What's in here? This tastes good!

She watches on in distaste as the Viking gobbles the stew. Remembering her hoped for pact with the creature, Oddlog, she pats him on the head: "Good boy!
"The stew is boiled seal liver."

Speaking to Faroo: "Witch; Odin's Rune; Magic? - how exciting!"

Torngusac translates...

Mmmm liver...

Oddlog continues

I once killed a man and before I ravished his wife... She made me the best pig's blood pudding I've ever tasted! Slurp! Slurp! Slurp! Though it wasn't half as good as this! Slurp! Slurp! Slurp! My compliments to the cook!

Oddlog smiles at Karima and then continues with his meal looking up occasionally to meet the eyes of those questioning him. He seems to expect more questions..

ooc- Karima may find it odd that the Viking brute shows no remorse for his killings and sexual conquests but the Dorset woman understands little to none of the Viking culture and heritage.

Kirima is unmarried and quite innocent - she does not really understand what Oddlog means by "ravished"; however she is woman enough to feel uncomfortable.
"Faroo, the expedition party: shall we take the Viking and Torngusac? Oddlog can be our guide and help us find Odin's Rune - surely this magic will be of use against the invaders."

Elder Pamiruq claps his hands.

My son has made a brave decision to join this hunt. If he were to kill a white bear, would there be any doubt to his claim for chief.

A few of the Dorset men present at this important gathering groan at Pamiruq's boast, but some do not. Some of the Elders nod there heads in approval of Pamiruq's hastey nomination of his son for chief of the Dorset tribe. Kinaktok himself had never cmade any sort of claim or run for chief. But with the current chief Kalituk having abandoned his position to follow after the love of his life, there was a void that needed to be filled.

Makkituk holds up his hands as the obvious succession arguement was about to erupt.

It is decided.

Faroo, Mannitok, Kinaktok and Karima with her charge Oddlog and the boy Torngusac will travel north to discover what they can about these terrible invaders...

The norseman Thorrin and the Dorset hunter Unalaq rushed into the hut wide-eyed as they looked around for the origin of the Viking voice - apparently their spirit journey was over. Unalaq had his spear in hand and was ready or anything as his muscles rippled in preparation.

Thorrin was wearing a fur that mostly covered his Viking heritage as he wore the hood up over his head.

"Is there trouble here?" Unalaq inquires anxiously.

"No!" Kirima laughs, "we are celebrating. We six will hunt the invaders and drive them back into the sea - oh, I'm happy to be a part of the excitement."
"Will you two join us?"

Unalaq looked at Kirima doubtfully and said, "I mean no disrespect, but I have fought these Norse men first hand. Their skins are hard as stone. Their weapons stronger and sharper than anything we have. They outnumber us. They have evil shammans assisting them every step of the way. Six or seven of us do not have a chance against all of them."

She pauses, then says carefully, "I inderstand, Unalaq, it is no mean task. We will be a guerilla band - good and true folk fighting the barbarian." Kirima sadly adds, "There is no-one else but us six. We need all the help we can get."
Pointing to Oddlog the Viking: "This creature will lead us to 'Odin's Rune', an important artifact to the invader," with confidence: "Magic!"

Remembering her status as messenger and cook she says, "Faroo and Kinaktok are in command."

"Torngusac, can you tell Thorrin what is going on for me. He will be most interested in knowing about Odin's Rune." Unalaq frowned and said, "If that refers to the dagger that I took from Tornuaq, I hid it on a beach. I suppose Tornuaq went after it and found it once he realized it wasn't in the water. Yuralria saw Tornuaq in her spirit walk, I heard her talking to him. I guess that means the knife is in the wrong hands now."

He looked once to Thorrin, then back to the Elders, "If the elders do not have something else of me, I would like to join in this."

As Thorrin and Oddlog enter the Elder's Hutt, the place if filled with excited confusion as the hunter's discuss what they have learned in the past few hours. Torngusac tries his best to translate Unulaq's request but Oddlog and Thorrin immediately get in each other's faces as soon as the boy begins. Still, Torngusac, keeps up with the shouting Vikings.

Image

Thorrin, you dog. Where is your crew? How did the Skraelings capture you?

Image

Oddlog, you twisted barbarian. I have befriended these men! They have honor and do not deserve what is coming! The Odin's rune was not meant for man... Gelga would burn this island to the ground for it.

Oddlog clenches his fists.

Where's the scramasax Thorrin!

The knife is in better hands now... Gelga or any other witch will never find the rune.

What? You would give the last rune to these Skraelings? Melkorka will flail you alive....

Melkorka is an old hag and lost her way, long ago. Alrik will not let her lay hands on the rune.

Alrik is dead! Melkorka is headed to the mountains. She will find it herself, your dagger be damned!

Any who know Thorrin are surprised to see the Viking bard lunge at Oddlog, swinging wildly. Thorrin however is no match for the sheer size and ferocity of Oddlog. Oddlog quickly hefts Thorrin over his shoulder and nearly onto the Edler's fire. Oddlog grabs hold of Thorrin's shirt and punches him square in the face. He raises his hand again, a crazed beserker rage in his eyes.

Oddlog shivers for a second before looking back at Karima. The Viking beserker's eyes quickly take on a more glassy look and he drops Thorrin.

Oddlog grins fondly at Karima.

Unalaq's spear was hefted and poised to strike. It was a good thing Kirima was so influential over the barbarian beserker. With the fight so quickly over, Unalaq lowered his weapon and straightened out of his fighting stance. "I withdrawl my offer," the hunter said to the Elders. "It is clear to me that the knife is far more important than any slim hope of defeating all of the Vikings. Thorrin and I should go try to retrieve it if we can still find it."

She looks between Kinaktok and Unalaq, a little bewildered - tactics to fight the Vikings have not occurred to her - innocent Kirima only saw the fun of it: "I suppose the more of us the stronger we are, but also more of us means it will be easier to catch us?"

"That is true. Tornuaq and I were lucky to avoid more of the Vikings after killing three of them. Had we a larger group, it would have been much easier to spot us in the distance, or track us through the snow," Unalaq stated. "Besides, I don't want that man anywhere near the knife when I retrieve it," he pointed clearly at Oddlog with his spear. He says to Torngusac, "Please tell Thorrin that I will take him to the knife while this other tries a more direct means. If he agrees, then that is my plan." Looking to the others within the Elders' hut, he says "If anyone wishes to go with Thorrin and me, you are welcome, but I think putting both of those men together is a bad idea."
