IC-OMAHA-School's Out Forever(Megan/Landers/Enrico/students)

The survivors from the T-Bone flee for the safety of Warren Air Force Base, while a lone woman struggles against all odds to stay alive in a very dangerous place. A small group of survivors races across Nebraska in a pickup truck. The helicopter group arrives in Omaha in a last ditch effort to save the world, but time is running out. Z-Day seems to last forever, but it will come to an end. The sun is getting lower, and night is coming...

IC-OMAHA-School's Out Forever(Megan/Landers/Enrico/students)

Post by Mr. Handy »

Z-Day - 4:13 PM Central Time - Brooks High School, Omaha, Nebraska
In Megan Petrovich's Classroom-
Megan Petrovich sat at her desk in her classroom on the second floor. The only exit was a door leading back to the central hallway. She was talking to two of her students. Heather Anderson, a senior and the most popular girl in school, didn't tend to pay much attention in class, but today had changed all that and she was interested in hearing Megan's war stories. So was Sunny Kwon, a freshman who was always interested in history. But would any of them have a future?

Megan Petrovich: "Heather, I've never heard of the dead truly coming back to life - that's a question better suited to Ms Landers or even Mr Johnston. In my experience, however, dead people tend to stay dead. I've heard of Bocors, voodoo priests from African or Haitian cultures, creating zombies through powders and rituals, but generally a bullet to the head tends to dissuade an encore performance to life.

If you happen to come across one of those creatures all the Medics are fussing about, don't ask it to give you an account of its time in Hades - just damn well get your arse out of there and find me or one of the other teachers." After a pause, "I'd say Guard Law, but he'd probably Slip you for running in the halls!"

In Megan Petrovich's classroom-
Sunny giggled. "Hey!" she said, something occurring to her. "Amelia the lunch lady comes from New Orleans. Maybe she knows something about voodoo. It's really big there!"

"Like, who cares?" said Heather. "This isn't caused by some mumbo jumbo. Miss Petrovich, when you were in Iraq did you ever, you know, kill a guy?"

The fluorescent lights overhead flickered briefly. They had done that several times before, when the dead touched the electric fence. It was getting more frequent as time went by.

Megan Petrovich:

Megan's eyes glanced at the flickering lights, her right hand unconsciously flexing. She missed her old M16 at times like this. The 'zombies'' constant attacks on the fence irritated Megan all the more because she couldn't do much about it. The teaching supply cabinets were sadly lacking in rifles and 'munition, including grenades and claymores. She hated waiting. It made you jumpy.

Looking back at the girls, their fear and anxiety suppressed in an attempt to appear cool in front of their soldier-teacher, Megan smiled. She folded her legs, placed her hands in her lap - in 'teacher-pose'.

"Iraq wasn't just a big sandpit for driving big trucks around, dune-hopping in a jeep. I've seen my share of fire-fights - and yes, I have killed." She rolled up her left sleeve, pointing to a silver scar that traced itself raggedly up her bicep. "I got this trying to take down a suicide bomber who had decided he'd light up our fuel convoy one night. I've taught you girls about the economy of fuel in our society, so you can imagine how anxious my Superior was for me to protect the fuel once we'd caught wind of the guerilla's plan."

Taking a brief break in her narrative, she looked around the classroom - putting her mind back to her time in service brought back old habits; always pay attention to your surroundings.

"We were on an escort mission from our main HQ to an outpost near to the frontline, to refuel and resupply the troops out there. I was pretty fresh at that time, and had it in my head we'd have a glorious run, dodging Iraqis, rescuing impressionable young lads (I was a little hot-headed back then, too) from a sticky fate at the hands of the guerillas... Well, what happened really showed me to be the completely green recruit that I was."

In Megan Petrovich's classroom-
"Like, wow," said Heather, staring at Megan's scar. "I can't even imagine being in Iraq, with all that wind and sand and hot weather. How do you, like, keep your hair from being ruined?"

Sunny rolled her eyes at Heather's statement. The older girl always seemed concerned about such superficial things. Sunny knew better than to comment, however. She was still new at this school, and Heather had the power to make or break her social life.

While they were talking, the lights flickered again and went out. This had happened before once nearly an hour ago, but they had come back on almost immediately. As the seconds passed, they realized that this time they were staying out. Fortunately it was still daylight for a few more hours, so visibility wasn't a problem, but now there was no power to the electric fence. The generator in the basement, which could be reached by the north stairwell, had to have failed.

Megan Petrovich:

As the lights flickered, Megan was about to reply to Heather something along the lines of - "when people around you are getting shredded to fleshy lumps by machine-gun fire, grenades are going off, and you're trying to clam shut a wound with your off hand and shoot with the other - your hair is the least of your concerns).

When the lights didn't return, Megan stood. "Girls, I think the power to the fence has failed. Grab your gear, and head to the main area* quickly. Opening her larger drawer in her desk, Megan pulled out her bag - not quite a handbag and more a shoulder-pouch, it contained her essentials - mobile phone, first aid kit, make-up, keys, etc. Wishing she had a firearm (or even her combat knife), she tried to remember or think of anything useful around
OOC,* Not sure what the layout is yet, but Megan's going to prepare for the worst - fearing that the fence is fried (bzzt!), grab gear and head to wherever the 'main area' is - the survivor's HQ or whatever. Not sure whether the school would let her have her m16 at work (!), but assuming she has a knife and handgun somewhere - Keeper? :D Roll was for Idea at 80% skill.

In Megan Petrovich's classroom-
Heather grabbed her purse and Sunny slipped on her backpack. Both girls hurriedly followed their teacher out into the hall.

In the north hall, upper floor-
Megan led the way out of her classroom and into the east-west hall outside it. To the west were two more classrooms, one on each side of the hall. Other teachers and students were starting to emerge from them too. She recognized Julianne Landers, wearing a miniskirt that was too short and a white blouse that was too sheer. Doug Marley, dreadlocks spilling over his shoulders, and the athletic Kelly Cameron were right behind her. From the door on the opposite side of the hall spilled Enrico Santini, who was leading Teresa Vazquez and Lisa Marley, Doug's younger sister. To the east, past the door to an empty classroom, was a four-way intersection.

"Hey, Sis!" said Doug. "I and I sure am glad to see you."

Lisa smiled. "Whatever's going on, I know you'll protect me," she said.

"What do we do now?" asked Kelly, worry etched across her face.

"We...uh..." started Julianne. "Look, there's Miss Petrovich! She'll know what to do!"

Everyone followed Megan to the intersection. To the south were bathrooms, and then the balcony overlooking the lobby, as well as side halls beyond that leading to more classrooms and the teachers' lounge. To the east were the computer and science labs. To the north were the doors to the science classroom and the special projects lab, and beyond them was the north stairwell. She reached the intersection just in time to see Chester Johnson emerge from the stairs and enter the special projects lab.
Megan Petrovich,No, you don't have your handgun or knife - or your M-16. It's school policy that not even teachers are allowed to bring weapons onto school grounds. You also don't actually carry a true first aid kit on you, but you know that there are medical supplies in the nurse's office downstairs. There should be a large group of people in the special projects lab, and it's big enough to hold everyone. It's also on the upper floor, and being on ground level or below strikes you as a bad idea if you don't have a reason to be down there. One reason would be to fix the generator, which is in the basement and is accessible by the north stairs. With the power out, the fence is no longer electrified. However, you're not an electrician. There are probably things that could be useful as weapons in the athletic supply closet in the gym downstairs, and there would be knives in the kitchen, also on ground level. The fence is strong enough that it should hold up for a while, but it won't last forever. The only guns she knows about are Officer Kate Wheeler's Glock, Rachel Cohen's Desert Eagle, and the Lubacheks' revolvers and shotgun. The principal does carry a baseball bat on him, and both Officer Wheeler and Jerry Law have nightsticks.

Megan Petrovich:

Emerging from her classroom, the two girls at her heels, Megan sees the gathering people to the west.

"Julianne! Enrico! I think the power to the fence has failed - I'm taking Sunny and Heather to the Special Projects lab where the others are. Someone needs to whack the damn old gennie with a wrench or something, and we should see to supplies and defensive positions. I doubt any of the CDC have done anything useful apart from play with their toys."

As she reached the junction, she saw the dignified science teacher, Chester Johnson, entering the Spec Proj lab. "Chester! I think the gennie's down. Can you tell me anything?"

In the north hall, upper floor-
"Megan!" called Chester as he entered the lab. "Yeah, maybe it blew a fuse or something. I'm not sure. Come on into the lab so we can figure out what to do next."

The other teachers and the students followed Megan Petrovich to the intersection.

"Like, what do we do now?" asked Heather. "Are we all, like, supposed to go into the lab?"

"Well, it's certainly big enough to hold everyone," said Enrico Santini. "The problem is that there's only one way out."

Rachel Cohen, the CDC security chief, emerged from the lab and moved quickly into the stairwell.

Doug looks around at his fellow students, checking the mood of his surroundings, unaware of anything out of the ordinary.

Megan Petrovich:

Talking to Chester, "Agreed! We should move fast, before our position is compromised further!"

Over the noise of the children talking worriedly, Megan could barely hear herself think.

Enrico Santini:

Frustrated by the confusion, Enrico takes a deep breath and hears something over the din of the students.

In the north hall, upper floor-
Megan hurried north down the hall and ducked into the special projects lab.
Enrico Santini,Enrico could hear voices talking in the special projects lab. Chester Johnson said: "Where are they planning to land, anyway? Did I hear something about on the roof? If that's the case, it's secure. If not..." He paused, then spoke again. "Dr. Saunders, it's not just Adam we need to worry about down there. I think the admin staff as well as some other folks, including students, are still on the lower floors. We need to get them to safety. Has anyone even spoken with those folks in a while? Maybe we can call down to the principal's office at least?" "My father is downstairs," said Ali al-Tikriti from within the lab, "in the cafeteria." "Yes, they're landing on the roof," said Dr. Helene Saunders. "The security guard has a radio. He can get everyone upstairs." There was a pause, and then he heard Dr. Liz Somerville say: "I'm on it!" Dr. Saunders spoke again:"Yes, that's a good idea. She's on her way. Jerry Law, if you can hear me, I need you to start moving anyone who can't help with the generator upstairs, where it's safer."
Dr. Liz Somerville emerged from the lab at a run. She turned right and headed into the north stairwell, her long legs flashing.

Enrico Santini:

"I want you students to wait here in the lab, we should be safe for the time being." Enrico says making grand sweeping gestures with both arms as if to corral the students with them. Once inside the room he seeks out Chester Johnson, who he overheard talking inside the lab.
