IC-OMAHA-Guardin' the Garden(Donald only)

The survivors from the T-Bone flee for the safety of Warren Air Force Base, while a lone woman struggles against all odds to stay alive in a very dangerous place. A small group of survivors races across Nebraska in a pickup truck. The helicopter group arrives in Omaha in a last ditch effort to save the world, but time is running out. Z-Day seems to last forever, but it will come to an end. The sun is getting lower, and night is coming...

IC-OMAHA-Guardin' the Garden(Donald only)

Post by Mr. Handy »

Z-Day - 4:13 PM Central Time - Brooks High School, Omaha, Nebraska
In the maintenance shed-
Donald Woodridge sat at the small table in his maintenance shed a short distance east of the school's main building, drinking a cup of coffee. He kept the shed in pristine condition, with racks of gardening and maintenance tools arranged neatly. There was a large axe for woodchopping, as well as a smaller hatchet next to it, and even a chainsaw for trimming shrubs. From the window next to his chair he had a good view of the garden, his pride and joy. Rows of various vegetables were growing there, many of which found their way into Amelia Delacroix's recipes, and there were also flowers that were there purely for their natural beauty. The shed also contained a motorized lawnmower used to keep the football field from getting overgrown, some fuel cans, and supplies useful for pest control, including insecticide sprays and rat poison. He also had an ample quantity of cleaning supplies. The only door out faced west, toward the school.

ooc: taking it rather easy considering the world is coming to an end... huh?

Donald sat there a moment longer, admiring the beauty and peace of it all. This was definitely part of his job that he enjoyed. Out here, he had control over everything... not a tool out of place, nor a smudge of dirt left uncleaned. He pondered over the day's activities, wondering what was happening with the infection. Was the government going to step in and provide treatment? He figured it was more likely that the government would drop a nuclear bomb on the whole area and call it a day... unless this little problem wasn't so little. Had it spread over the entire country? Was it also overseas? What sort of bug moved that fast? Nothing he'd ever heard of. He recalled a movie he watched called Outbreak, and how it would take time for an infection like this to spread coast to coast. "So... this isn't your normal, average, every day flu bug, that's for certain," Donald said to himself with a smirk as he looked outside again.

He started grabbing up certain items... the hatchet, the axe, the chainsaw, the gasoline, and set them into his wheelbarrow. So long as there was going to be a constant threat to the school grounds, he felt it'd be nice to keep them handy. He snatched up a few more cleaning supplies, to prepare in the clean-up of the school. Aside from the barracaded door and electrified fenceline, he figured it'd be work like normal for him. At least with so many people having been absent, he wouldn't have so much to clean.

In the maintenance shed-
Donald arranged the axe, hatchet, chainsaw, and containers of fuel carefully in his wheelbarrow. As he did so, the overhead light bulb flickered briefly. It had done that several times before, when the dead touched the electric fence. It was getting more frequent as time went by.

OOC,You mean when the infected touched the fence, right? Any hammers and nails in this shed?
Donald frowned and shook his head at the flickering bulb. "I wonder just how long that fence will last. Better check the fuel level in the generators too."

OOC,In the Omaha backstory I sent you along with your secrets, you'll see that Donald has been told that the dead are rising, but whether he believes it or not is up to you. Yes, there is a hammer (which count as a small club) and plenty of nails. You also have a hammer and nails in your tool kit. There's only one generator, and it's in the basement of the school's main building. To get there you'd go through one of the fire exits behind the school that's been propped open for people to enter. There's a stairwell nearby that goes down to the basement and up as far as the roof. The front entrance and the other stairs have been barricaded. I haven't had time to draw up the map yet, but I hope to do so this weekend.

Donald also grabs his toolkit, an extra hammer, and plenty of nails in the event they need to board up the windows. Then he starts pushing the wheelbarrel back toward the school.

He pushes the wheelbarrel into the school hallway, complete with all of the tools he placed therein except for the axe. Then he makes his way down to the generator room.

OOC,You can't there that quickly. You can only do so much between major updates, and you don't know what will happen between now and the time you would get there. I also need to keep all of the Omaha threads in sync. You'll get partway to the school by the time I update, which will probably be this weekend. Please be patient.

OOC,I'm not updating yet, but while you're waiting you might as well make a Spot Hidden roll for Donald to determine how much he sees when he goes outside. The base skill level is 25%.

In the garden-
Donald pushed his wheelbarrow out of the shed and down the garden path toward the school. To the east of the main building, between it and the shed, was a construction area where an expansion was being built. Work had only recently started, and the foundation had just been laid a couple of days ago. The newly dried concrete was a sea of gray on the east side of the building. The front entrance, on the south side, had already been barricaded up hours ago. There were fire exits in various places, but they normally could only be unlocked from inside, as they locked automatically upon closing. One rear door on the north side of the school, leading into the gym, had been propped open so that people outside could get back in quickly in an emergency. Of course, he had keys to all the doors in the school anyway. The north stairwell had stairs leading down to the basement, from which he could reach the generator room. The other stairwells had been blocked off.
OOC,Donald, you can reach the parking lot outside the school this turn if you like, but you can't get inside just yet. Also, give me another Spot Hidden roll and a Listen roll. The base level for Listen is also 25%.

Donald wonders to himself as he pushes the wheelbarrel along if that expansion would ever be completed now, what with all the insanity going on. He kept on pushing along heading for the north stairwell, trying to ignore the abnormalities around him. He saw a robin, though... it chirped at him as he walked by. "At least they're still all right," he commented - meaning the animals in general, of course.
