IC-JUNO-On the Road(Kathryn/Emily/Lauren/Kyle)

Post by Mr. Handy »

Z-Day - 6:56 PM Mountain Time - Big Mac Road, 1 mile south of Ogallala, Nebraska
Emily Montrose turned left and drove south on Route 61, also known as Big Mac Road. She had taken a wrong turn earlier and strayed too close to Ogallala, but they had encountered no zombies on the road and now she had the chance to put some distance between her vehicle and the city. There hadn't been too many delays, but there were enough to ensure that they wouldn't reach the truck stop by nightfall. The sun was already very low in the sky, hanging barely above the horizon. Within minutes it would set, and darkness would gradually descend. The grim choice of whether to try to hunker down somewhere or drive on through the night lay in front of her. She had stuck to the back roads for most of the trip and they had so far encountered nobody, living or dead, since they left the Perkins farm. She drove past one road branching off to the right and then two more, but the map said all were dead ends. The third was so short she could see the end of it. The nearest road that cut through to the west was still a couple of miles away.

The loss of her husband had devastated Emily, but she still had her daughter Lauren. The girl - no, young woman - who sat beside her hadn't said much during the trip. Next to her, in the shotgun seat, sat the air traffic controller Jack had risked his life to rescue, Kathryn McCoy, and in the back of the truck was Kyle Perkins. Chronologically he was about twenty years old, but she knew that his mental age was somewhat lower. He had suddenly become an orphan in the space of seconds, and she knew that without her he would be totally lost. In a sense, she had become mother to all of them.

Lauren continued to sit in sullen silence, She still couldn't believe her dad was dead. Her mother Emily was there to comfort her, but there was a void that would never be filled. She looked over at Kathryn, unsure of what she could say to her. This poor woman had been kidnapped and brutalized - and one of her father's last acts was to save her. Perhaps he had saved all of them. If he hadn't gone back, would Gardner have come after them? Would Jack have ended up dying at his hands instead of being chewed to death by Alvarez? And what would Gardner have done with her and her mother? Just thinking about it made her shudder. She didn't understand how Kathryn was able to keep going after what that maniac had done to her. And there was Kyle in the bed of the pickup truck, looking for all the world like a lost puppy. He had lost his father too, just like her.

Kathryn stared out the window as the countryside rolled by. Emily's counseling during the long drive had helped her a lot. She wasn't so afraid of strangers any more. Now she would have liked to find another living, breathing person somewhere, anywhere. Her shoulder still throbbed with pain, the wound from the grenade itching. Still, she had survived it and Gardner had not. Her abductor was dead, and she had Jack to thank for it. Jack who had died protecting her from what had once been Alvarez, who had in turn sacrificed his leg trying to save her. The physical pain was nothing next to her mental anguish, but she was alive and she was free. If it hadn't been for Jack, she would be spending the night with Gardner now. She felt Emily and Lauren's loss too. Kyle was still a stranger to her, but she was starting to get used to his presence.

Kyle remained vigilant in the back of the truck, looking all around. Just because there had been no threats didn't mean there wouldn't be any, so he stayed alert. He had to protect the women. The military carbine that had once belonged to Alvarez felt strange in his hands, but he knew it was a lot more powerful than the dinky little .22 he had given to Lauren. His mom had always said most girls liked flowers, but he knew that today a gun made a better gift. He was still sad about his parents' deaths and confused about what to do, but he was reassured that Emily seemed to know what she was doing. He didn't know what to make of Kathryn. He knew she had been hurt really badly, but he didn't understand how exactly. Her wounded shoulder alone wouldn't have been that upsetting. Maybe she was mourning people she cared about too.

Keeping her attention to more interior ongoings Kat is inattentive to anything outside the truck. This crowd could make out a substitute for a family, a second chance on life. Damaged but alive...

Emily scanned the road ahead as she drove but noticed nothing other than the bleak landscape in the fading light.
"I don't like the idea of driving though the night, but we can't simply stop and wait the night in the truck, it's too vulnerable." After thinking for a moment: "Could one of you see if Kyle knows of any safe places in the area out here?"

OOC,I'll be playing Lauren and Kyle as NPCs for now. Lauren's player is officially MIA, having not logged in since October. Yellowsigh should be returning later this month.
On the road-
"I dunno," said Kyle from the back, able to hear Emily just fine. "I've never been out this way." He peered around. "I can't see nothin' interesting."

Lauren just shrugged. "He's right, Mom," she said. "Just more of the same."

Emily drove onwards as the sun sank still lower. It was now touching the horizon.

On the road-
A rifle shot rang out somewhere to the left and behind the pickup truck. With everyone looking to the right, nobody had noticed anything in that direction before. Glancing in the direction of the shot, the survivors could see a convenience store off the road. The truck had just passed the turnoff to its parking lot and would have to turn around to get back to it. On the roof of the store, they saw a large black man standing there and waving his arms for a second before dropping back down.

Emily hit the breaks on the truck, and began to turn around. "We've got survivors back there on the roof. Let's go to them and see if we can help."
