Z-Day - 12:33 PM Mountain Time - Beneath the T-Bone
In the warehouse-
Tsuba, Lisa Crow, and Sue Newton made it down to the bottom of the second flight of stairs, walking past a few dead bodies on the stairs. The huge warehouse at the bottom had several more. All of them had bullet holes in their heads. There were also plenty of crates in the room, some of them open. At the opposite end of the warehouse was a smaller staircase leading even further down.

"Look at this place," said Lisa in wonder.

"Stay alert," warned Tsuba, holding his AK-47 ready. He had finished clearing the jam on the way downstairs. "There could be anything down here."

In the warehouse-
Tsuba began to look carefully around the huge warehouse. but found nothing of interest, just lots of crates and dead bodies with holes in their heads. Lisa didn't see anything of note either, nor did Sue.

"Okay," said Tsuba, "I think we're clear in here. Let's proceed downstairs."

In the reception area-
Bill Black led the way down the stairs from the warehouse, with Lisa and Sue following him. There were more bodies on the stairs and a small pile at the bottom, where a barred gate had once stood. This gate had been knocked off of its hinges and flung back into the room beyond. It appeared to be some kind of reception area. The only furniture was a desk near the back of the room with a chair behind it, some cabinets, and some empty bookcases. Beyond the desk, a hall led further into the facility. More bodies were lying within the room.

The three of them began to search the room. Bill found nothing of interest. Neither did Lisa and Sue.

"Nothing's in here," said Lisa. "Let's keep moving."

In the prison hallway-
Tsuba led Lisa and Sue into the hallway at the back of the reception area. A couple more bodies lay in the hall in a line leading further back, but nothing else of interest was there. There were two doors on each side, all of them open. The door on the far right was made of solid metal and looked stronger than the others. There was also an open door at the far end of the hall.

"Which door do you want to check out first?" he asked.

"I'm wondering how that gate before got taken off," murmurs Sue with a shudder, whether with explosives or heavy fists, it didn't look too promising. The bodies ... well, she was almost getting used to seeing bodies, though the smell was an ever-present reminder of abnormality, but subtle touches like that gate got to her. She wasn't even sure why.

In the prison hallway-
Sue realized that a large pile of dead bodies with bullets in their heads had been lying outside where the gate had once stood. The gate also looked battered, so it was probable that the dead had knocked it in while people on the inside had been shooting them.

Tsuba nodded. "Yeah, that makes sense," he said. "There were people alive down here not that long ago, then. They'd likely have retreated straight down the hall judging by the trail of bodies."

"If they're still alive, they might not be for long," said Lisa. "Maybe we should proceed directly back there to see."

"I don't like the idea of possibly leaving an enemy at our backs and cutting off our escape, though. Maybe we should check these four doors on the sides of the hall first. Sue, what do you think?"

"Well, can anyone hear anything? There's a good chance no one made it," says Sue sadly. "A quick peek then, into those rooms. Make sure they're clear. Do we all have enough ammunition? Everything fully loaded?"

In the prison hallway-
Bill cocked his ear and held his AK-47 ready. "I hear a kind of scratching sound," he said. "It's coming from way, way back, though. Probably rats or something." He exchanged magazines. "Okay, I'm ready."

"Me too," said Lisa. She held her pistol in one hand and a tire iron in the other. "Which door first?"

"First one on the right," he said. He peered through the doorway carefully, sweeping the room with the barrel of his assault rifle. He nodded when it seemed clear and stepped inside. Lisa followed him.

In the mess hall-
On the other side of the doorway was a large mess hall containing long, dusty tables and equally dusty chairs. At the rear of the room was a counter, and behind that was a kitchen area still containing pots, pans, and utensils. At the back of the kitchen was another door, also open. There was a stack of steel trays that had once been used for serving meals. The sinks were rusted, but still looked like they might be usable. There were also a stove, a grill, and a large Westinghouse refrigerator from around 1960 that was still running.

In the mess hall-
Bill and Lisa also crept towards the door. "Cover me," whispered Bill. The women did so while he cautiously opened the door and peered inside. On the other side of the door was a large pantry stocked with cans of food with old-style labels. There were several rats inside as well, but they vanished into the darkened corners within seconds of the door opening.

In the mess hall-
The expiration date on the can was September 20, 1961. Lisa also examined the cans. "I don't see any dates more recent than that one," she said. "Okay, let's get out of here and check another room."

"Which one next?" asked Tsuba as he led the way back. "Do you want to check the door on the opposite side of the hall from the mess hall first, or one of the two further back?"

In the barracks-
"I agree," said Bill. "Best not to risk leaving any hostiles behind us." He led the way back through the mess hall and across the corridor to the nearest door on the left side. Lisa and Sue went with him, their weapons ready.

On the other side of the door was a large room with eighteen bunks, each with a locker and a table beside it. Pinups from the late 1950's and early 1960's were on the walls, prominently featuring sex symbols Marilyn Monroe and Jayne Mansfield. There was also an old black and white photograph of a pretty young girl tacked to the wall next to one of the bunks. The room was otherwise empty. As they entered the room, they could see a doorway in the left wall, near the rear, that was not visible from the hallway.

In the bathroom-
The room through the doorway off the barracks wasn't just a simple toilet. It had several toilet and shower stalls, as well as a line of sinks below a long mirror. The nearest sink had a small amount of a red substance around its drain. It looked like blood, and had no discernable odor.

Bill nodded, proceeding cautiously into the bathroom and checking inside each stall before moving to the next, the barrel of his AK-47 always at the ready. "All clear," he reported back after inspecting the last one. "I did notice some bizarre graffiti on the wall of one of the toilet stalls. Looked just as old as everything else in this place. It said 'The demons are below and they are hungry.'"

In the barracks-
Lisa shivered as Bill rejoined her and Sue in the barracks. "Where to now?" she asked.

"Back to the hall," said Bill. "We've still got those doors on the left and right farther down before we go see where the hall leads. The door on the left looked normal like the one to this room, but the one on the right is made of sturdy, solid metal. Good thing it's already open, or we might have trouble with it. Which one do you want to check first?"

"The one on the right," says Lisa,"cause it looks more interesting." She chambers a round in her Beretta and scans the hallway floor for blood trails, disturbed dust, or other signs of passagebut doesn't see anything of note.

In the hallway-
"I agree," said Bill. "Maybe there's something good in there, but with that door open it makes me think someone else got to it first."

Once Bill, Lisa, and Sue returned to the hall, Lisa was able to see a very obvious trail of blood and gore - and corpses - leading through the door at the far end. The three of them proceeded cautiously to the heavy steel door on the far right, which had been opened inwards. On the other side of the door appeared to be an armory. The walls were lined with dusty shelves and weapon racks, but sure enough all of them were empty.

In the hallway-
Tsuba followed Lisa to the open door at the end of the hall. On the other side they saw what seemed to be a guard room. Nobody was in the room, but more carnage stretched across it to the open door at the far end. Another door was visible on the right side of the guard room. The room contained a pair of bunks, a desk, and a filing cabinet.

In the hallway-
"Don't get too far ahead," whispered Bill. "We still haven't checked that door on the left." He carefully crossed the hall to the door opposite the armory and looked inside. On the other side, he could see a dusty office with no other exits. In the middle of the room, facing the door, was a desk with a chair behind it. A table with more chairs was near the front of the room, off to one side. A filing cabinet was against one wall, and at the back of the room was a bunk, which had been moved aside. A ventilation grille was behind it, and it had been pried open.

Tsuba rejoined the women in the guard room and told them what he had found. "Looks clear to me," he said quietly. "Where should we check next?"

Tsuba carefully opened the door on the right of the guard room while the women covered him. The room on the other side of the door had no other exits, and the only pieces of furniture were a table and two chairs. One of the chairs had restraints of some kind. There was also an empty water bucket in one corner, and a small, strange-looking electrical generator.

In the interrogation room-
This room looked to Lisa like it was used to torture prisoners for information. They were probably restrained in the chair while the small generator was used to administer electric shocks to them. The bucket might have been filled with ice water and used to drench them.

In the cell block-
Bill and Lisa entered the cell block on the right and left sides respectively, while Sue went up the center with her shotgun ready and trained on the open door at the far end. The hall stretched out into the distance. Six doors were on either side, all solid steel. Each door had a little sliding panel at eye level, probably for the guards to look in on the prisoners and to check to make sure it was safe to open the door. From the second door on the right came a horrible smell, reminiscent of badly burnt meat mixed with gasoline.

Bill and Lisa began checking the cells. The doors were locked, but they could see inside through the little sliding panels. Lisa saw that the first two on the left were empty, and Bill saw the same thing with the first cell on the right. When he opened the panel to look into the second cell, he saw a rolled-up tarp in the middle of the floor that seemed to be the source of the odor. The shape taking up the bulk of the space inside looked familiar. He soon realized what it was. "There's a tarpaulin inside this cell," he said. "That's where the smell is coming from. It's wrapped around...a human corpse!" He managed to keep his lunch down.

In the cell block-
"They probably wrapped it to keep the flames from spreading," said Bill. "The real question is why did they burn it in the first place? There are so many bodies all around, why burn only this one? Well, let's keep going." He and Lisa proceeded down the long hallway, and Sue walked alongside them covering the far end with her shotgun. The doors to the next two cells were also locked and empty, so they moved to the next pair of doors. Tsuba again saw nothing in the fourth cell on the right, which was also locked. Lisa slid open the panel of the fourth on the left and looked inside, meeting with a shocking sight. There was a dead body lying in the cell, a very old one by the look of it. The flesh was very badly decayed, but she could still tell that the deceased was male. The corpse wore the uniform of an airman in the U.S. Air Force. There were also three rats in the cell, chewing on the ancient flesh. This door was locked as well.

Lisa swallows hard at the distasteful sight but keeps it together. "Ugh. Rats!" she exclaims, turning away from the door and snapping the spy hole shut.

In the cell block-
Tsuba nodded silently, and they proceeded towards the end of the cell block. He saw nothing in the last two cells on the right, but Lisa found another shocking sight in the very next cell on the left. Another ancient corpse wearing an airman's uniform was inside, but this one had a belt tied around its neck and to a ceiling fixture. dangling with its feet several inches above the floor. Three rats tried to nip at the dead man's heels, but he was just out of reach.

In the cell block-
"Right on," said Tsuba. He led Lisa through the open doorway at the end of the cell block and into the shower room. Sue Newton went back the way she had come to meet Clarence.

In the guard room-
Clarence entered the room from the hallway leading out of the reception area just as Sue returned from the cell block. "Hey, Sue," said Clarence. "What's going on down here? Where are the others?"

"Bill and Lisa are exploring deeper," said Sue. "We haven't found much yet, just various creepy things. Dead bodies, rats, and so on."

"Shall we go join them?"

In the prison showers-
Bill and Lisa found themselves in the prisoners' shower room. There were several stalls on either side. At the far end, another open door led onwards. There was not much of interest in here. The trail of bodies petered out in this room.

In the guard room-
"This way," said Sue. She led Clarence back into the cell block, towards the door at the far end that Tsuba and Lisa had gone through.

In the prison showers-
Bill and Lisa discovered nothing on their way through the shower room. All of the stalls were empty. They reached the door at the other end. On the other side was a large, empty area, which resembled an exercise yard. Presumably it had been the prisoners' common area, used by the inmates when they were allowed out of their cells.

In the prisoners' common area-
When Bill and Lisa entered the room, they saw another door in the opposite wall. This one was made of sturdy metal, much like the armory door, and it too was open. Through the door, they saw a large cluster of people gathered around what looked like a large submarine hatch set into the floor of the room beyond. They were clawing and scrabbling uselessly at the metal hatch, and most of them were wounded. Half of them crawled on the ground, and the rest crouched over the hatch. Bill tried to be quiet, and he was - for the most part.

In the prisoners' common area-
Lisa took one look at the red-eyed monstrosities and fled the way she had come, all thoughts of stealth forgotten. The creatures looked towards the source of the sound and began stumbling through the open metal door.

(Lisa is fleeing in panic for the next nine combat rounds, including this one. She will reach the shower room this round. This is probably the best insanity for her to get under the circumstances. She does still get a check mark for her successful Sneak roll earlier, though now the zombies have heard her.)

In the prison showers-
Lisa Crow ran into the shower room from the far end, panic written all over her face. Bill followed her quickly, though he was still steady. At the same time, Clarence and Sue entered from the cell block.

"What's going on?" asked Clarence.

"Fall back!" called Bill. "There's a sealed hatch further inside, and a bunch of those things were trying to get in. Now they're chasing us!" He aimed his rifle through the doorway to the common area as he retreated. "There's seven of them on their feet and seven more crawling." The walking zombies were crossing the common area and making their way toward the showers. The crawlers were filtering through the door from the hatch chamber. Lisa did not stop running, but kept fleeing toward the cell block.

(Sue, roll Sanity. If you remain sane, you may fire your shotgun once or your pistol twice at one of the zombies if you wish. The zombies are 10 yards away, and they cannot reach you this round. (Sue has 50% in Shotgun and 40% in Handgun. There is a -5 penalty for targeting the head. She may only fire the shotgun once per round, however, while she can fire the handgun twice at a zombie's head provided it's at the same target. Of course, the shotgun will most likely kill a zombie with a single hit to the head, which one shot from the revolver is unlikely to do.)

(Since Laraqua has been away for the last several days and hasn't acted yet, I'll NPC Sue for this round and have her use her shotgun.)

In the prison showers-
"We'll fire one volley, then fall back," said Bill. He and his father raised their rifles and took aim at the creatures' heads. Clarence fired first, landing a devastating hit that blew his target's skull apart. Bill only barely hit, badly wounding but not finishing his. Still, it fell to the ground and was reduced to a crawl. Sue let loose with her shotgun, but the blast passed harmlessly over their heads. The remaining walking zombies began to enter the shower room and were just a few yards away. The crawlers made their way into the common area, about five yards behind them.

"Okay, retreat!" shouted Clarence. Lisa had already beaten them to it, and was now halfway through the cell block.

(If anyone fires this round, there will not be enough time to aim at the head and the zombies will get to attack after you shoot. I highly recommend retreating to the cell block.)

In the cell block-
Lisa continued to flee in terror, running through the cell block and into the guard room. Clarence, Bill, and Sue made a more orderly retreat into the cell block. The five that were still standing walked in from the shower room. The one Bill had just wounded crawled in a few yards behind them, and the other seven crawlers made it into the shower room.

(The zombies are now ten yards away, so you may have one round of combat to fire without risk, using the same rules as described above.)

Sue fires again, the gun lurching in her hands with the kick back. A memory flashes through her mind, too quick to grasp, but enough to leave her with an unsettling sense of longing and nostalgia.

In the cell block-
Clarence shot another zombie in the head, taking it out. Bill shot one too with his AK-47, sending another to its hands and knees but not quite finishing it. The other three zombies still on their feet were very close now, and the nine crawlers struggled to keep up. "Fall back again!" called Clarence.

Bill glanced over his shoulder. "Where did Lisa go?" he asked.

(If you fire this round, you will not have time to aim at the head, and the zombies will get to attack afterwards. You may retreat with no problem.)

In the guard room-
Lisa continued to flee for the exit, running down the hallway to the reception area.

Sue retreats, getting used to the pattern. When her time comes once more, and she can fire safely, she will fire off another shot. This one will hit and does a far lot more damage. Sue whoops joyously and then wonders where her husband is off to... A sudden fear catches her. She should find him, perhaps explore this place with him. They shouldn't have allowed themselves to be separated.

(It will be a couple of rounds before you can safely fire. When you can that roll will actually hit - barely. You have 50% Shotgun skill, so you need 45 or less to hit the head and you rolled a 45. The 17 damage will also be enough for a kill when the time comes. I'll hold these rolls in reserve, but please wait until the time comes to fire before rolling from now on. By the way, you put Amelia from New York Baby as your character name. ;) )

In the guard room-
Clarence, Bill, and Sue all dropped back out of the cell block and into the guard room. The three standing zombies lurched slowly after them, about six yards away from them now. The crawling ones were even further back.

(It's still not safe to fire yet; you'll need to retreat for one more round before it is.)

In the reception area-
Lisa rushed upstairs in a panic, entering the warehouse.

In the warehouse-
Lisa raced across the warehouse and fled up the stairs leading to the surface.

In the guard room-
"Keep moving!" shouted Clarence. He, Bill, and Sue retreated down the hallway leading to the reception area.

In the reception area-
Sue and the others emerged into the reception area. The walkers lumbered through the guard room, about ten yards away. There was a brief, sudden tremor that shook the underground complex. It was rather mild as earthquakes went, not anywhere near powerful enough to knock somebody over, but it was disconcerting.

(At this point, Sue can safely fire her shotgun and use those rolls you've already made. She will barely hit and do 17 damage to one of the three walking zombies, more than enough for a kill.)

(Lisa Crow is moving to this thread: Blue Plate Special. Do not read the posts there prior to the linked post, and please stop reading this thread at this point.

Everyone else remains in the current thread.)

In the reception area-
The zombie Sue shot fell, its head blown apart. She knew that earthquakes were rare in this region, but apparently they could still happen. Clarence shot a zombie in the head, dropping it to its hands and knees, but it crawled on toward him. Bill shot another, wounding it only slightly. It lurched on. "Fall back!" he called, heading for the stairs leading up to the warehouse.

(At this point the last standing zombie will get close enough to attack if you don't retreat, and so will the one Clarence just shot. If you stay and fire, remember that you cannot aim at the head and it will be able to attack you afterwards. The standing zombie has taken 4 damage to the head, so it would take 6 more to the head or 36 overall to finish it. The one on the ground has taken 8 to the head. By the way, you may reload while retreating. Two shotgun shells can be reloaded per combat round.)

In the warehouse-
Clarence, Bill, and Sue hurried past the shattered gate and up the stairs, back into the warehouse. They made their way across the floor until they reached the base of the stairs leading back to the surface. Clarence couldn't hear anything, his ears still ringing from the gunshots. Tsuba, however, heard shouting from above. "It's Keith!" he told the others. "Dad, he wants you to hurry back up and says he's got the truck ready." He raised his voice. "We're okay, bro! We ran into more of those things trying to get into a sealed hatch deep inside this place, but I think we can finish them off! What's going on up there? Is Lisa all right? Do you want all of us to come back up, or just Pa?"

The last standing ghoul reached the top of the stairs and lumbered across the warehouse, arms outstretched. One of the crawlers was only a few yards behind it.

(Sue, you may safely fire again if you wish. The range is 10 yards, so you'd do 4d6 damage if you hit. The standing zombie has taken 4 damage to the head, so 6 more will finish it. Alternatively, you may start heading back upstairs.)

In the warehouse-
"I don't know if I would say Lisa is 'alright,'" shouted Keith from above. "She is uninjured, but she ran out of here like a bat out of hell and is heading towards the motel. We've got a horde of about 100 coming this way. You all better hurry up and kill them and get out of there before you get stuck between... well... a rock and a dead place. Some guys are doing hit and run on them, but it might be best if they had another truck helping them. I got my truck here to give you all a ride out of here."

In the warehouse-
Clarence took aim at the zombie and put a bullet deep into its skull, shattering it like a dropped watermelon. "We're working on it!" he called. "That's one more down. The others are already mostly destroyed, so we should have no problem!" Bill fired at the crawler, but his rifle jammed. He swore up and down as it dragged itself across the warehouse floor towards them.

(Sue, you may fire safely again. The zombie will not reach you this round. Any hit to the head with the shotgun will finish it off, as its head has already taken 8 damage.)

In the warehouse-
Keith shouted down from above: "Hey, Bro? Lisa is up here, she's a little shaken up, but still solid. You sure you're okay down there? Need any help?"

"Thanks, I'm glad she's fine!" called Tsuba as he worked on his rifle. "We're fine. My damn gun jammed on me, but Pa and Sue were able to make up for it. Got about nine more of these things left somewhere below us. They've already got major head wounds, so they're slowed to a crawl. We should be able to mop 'em up. Sounds like you're needed more up top. Let us know in advance if things get hairy and we might have to bug out. It'll take us a little while to climb all those stairs." He popped out the jammed shell and chambered a round. "My gun's working again! We're good now!"

He had cleared the jam just in time. Another crawler emerged from the stairs leading below, less than 15 yards distant. It would take a while to cross the warehouse, so there was plenty of time to shoot it.

(Sue, you may fire again if you wish. At this range you'd do 2d6 damage with the shotgun, but there's no need to roll damage since even the minimum will finish it off.)

In the warehouse-
"It's bad!" Lisa answered emphatically as she continued down the stairs. "C'mon, we're loading up the trucks and getting a move on! Tsuba, do you hear me?!" She finally reached the bottom of the stairs and rejoined Clarence, Bill, and Sue.

"I hear you, babe," said Bill. "Good to see you again."

"If we have to retreat," said Clarence, "the open road is the best place to be. If we go down here, we could end up trapped like the last bunch that came down here, before we arrived. I think they got trapped beneath that hatch all the way in the back. We've got eight more crawling this way. Is it bad enough that we don't have time to finish them off?"

As he finished speaking, the zombies started crawling up the stairs from the reception area. All eight of them cleared the top of the staircase and started crossing the warehouse floor. All but one had gaping head wounds, and it was a wonder they could still move. The other one, a blonde with a scoped hunting rifle slung on her back, had her head completely intact, but she was crawling because both of her legs were obviously broken. All of them had angry red eyes.

(There's no need to roll Sanity, as you've all seen this group of zombies before. You each have one combat round to fire. Any hit that does 2 or more damage to the head is a guaranteed kill on all but the blonde zombie, who requires 10 damage to the head as usual. As always, there is a -5 penalty for aiming at the head. Lisa, you get to fire twice with your pistol, provided both shots are at the same target. Sue, you may use either your shotgun or your revolver. The shotgun may only be fired once, but at this range if you hit you will deal 2d6 damage each to 1d3 targets. This will be enough to kill any zombie except the blonde one, so you don't need to roll damage unless she's one of your targets. The revolver may be fired twice provided both shots are at the same target.)

(Dice rolls:
Spoiler:
Clarence missed his Rifle roll: 62% roll vs. 60-5=55% skill
Bill critically missed his Rifle roll: 98% roll vs. 70-5=65% skill
)

In the warehouse-
Clarence fired at a zombie's head, but his aim was slightly off. Bill also fired his AK-47, but the shot was way off and the recoil startled him into dropping it. The eight zombies continued to crawl across the floor of the warehouse and were now just ten yards away.

(You can each fire another shot this round safely. Lisa can fire twice at the head, but only if both shots are at the same target. This time the zombies are close enough that Sue can only hit a single target, but she will do 4d6 damage if she hits. The damage roll only really matters if you shoot the blonde zombie, who needs 7 more damage to the head to finish off. The others only need one or two. Bill misses his next attack due to his critical failure and must spend the next round retrieving his weapon.)

"Hey, at least she didn't drop it like I did," said Tsuba, scooping his weapon back up. Clarence took a shot at a zombie's head, blowing what was left of it to bits. But there were six more still on their way, and now they were just five yards off.

(If you want to fire this round, any surviving zombies will get to attack you afterwards. You may also retreat upstairs without having to roll anything. You can make it to the landing halfway up this round.)

On the stairs-
Clarence and Bill followed the women up the stairs. As they ran, everyone heard Keith call from above: "Is that you all coming up the stairs?"

"Yeah, son, it's us!" Clarence shouted back. "We've still got six of them crawling behind us!"

The four of them reached the landing midway to the surface. Glancing back down, they could see that the six zombies had just reached the base of the stairs.

(Each of you may fire at the zombies for one combat round safely, or you may retreat to the surface instead. If you retreat, you may reload at the same time. Sue, you may fire the shotgun once at a single target, and any head hit will be an automatic kill since all of the remaining zombies have taken 8 or 9 damage to the head already. Lisa, you may fire twice at a zombie's head, provided they're both at the same target. You should roll your first shot and then roll damage. If you miss, you should then fire your second shot. If you only cause 1 damage, roll Luck to see if the zombie you hit was badly damaged enough for this to kill it. If the Luck roll fails, you should go ahead with your second shot.)

(The fact that you have to use precision aim to target the head is what prevents you from shooting again. The rules state that you may only fire one shot per round when using precision aim, but I've been allowing guns that fire multiple shots per round to have all of them under the condition that you aim at the same target. There simply isn't enough time in a combat round to take careful aim at two different targets. If you're not using precision aim you could fire at more than one target, but then you'd have to use the random hit location table and probably wouldn't hit the head.)

"We'll be up in just another minute, son!" Clarence shouted back. He fired again, but he missed too. Bill took a shot as well, putting one of the crawling ghouls down. The last four crawled upstairs and were now halfway to the landing.

Just then, the ground shook again. It was more violent this time, but not enough that there was any danger of falling down the stairs.

(If you fire at the zombies this round, any that you fail to kill will get to attack. You may instead retreat the rest of the way upstairs, and you may reload while you do so if you wish.)
