IC-THRU-Among the Ruins(Luke only)

Z-Day - 12:17 PM Mountain Time - Ruins of the T-Bone
Luke lay sprawled out on the roof of the garage, the only part of the structure still standing with the exception of the small section of roof above the stairs leading underground. He could still see the badly wounded zombies crawling through the grass to the east. Only nine remained, and he was confident he could easily finish them off before they reached the rubble.

(You may take five shots at the zombies' heads with your rifle. Use your normal skill with only the -5% penalty for shooting at the head. Any hit to the head will finish one of them off, so there is no need to roll damage. Also, roll Listen.)

Luke finishes off 3 more zombies and curses at his missed shots. With the report of his 7.62x51mm rifle and his cursing, he fails to hear anything.

Luke eliminated three of the crawling zombies, leaving six more to go. As he was lining up his next shot, there was a tremendous noise of rending metal and shattering glass coming from west side of the motel. He could also hear the sound of vehicles approaching rapidly from the south. They sounded like a mix of motorcycles and light trucks.

(You may take one shot this round, but if you do so you will not be able to look at what's going on to the south or west. Roll Know to try to identify the source of the sound to the west.)

Luke looks around as he identifies the sound, he figures that he can kill the crawlers without too much trouble, while the sound is far more intriguing.

Luke recognized the whine of a helicopter engine just before the crash, probably a Huey. Turning around to the west, he could see the twisted wreckage a short distance northwest of the motel, jutting above the high grass not far from the edge of the field.

(Roll Spot Hidden if you want to see into the grass.)

"Holy sh-..." Luke mutters as he takes a closer look at the grass.

Luke could see the twisted wreckage. One man lay bleeding in the grass a short distance south of it, unmoving. Smoke was starting to rise from the ruined helicopter and prevented him from seeing inside.

Luke scans the surroundings of the chopper for any zombies. Crashing is bad enough, but being wounded and then attacked by zombies must suck... He also notes that any dead people in the chopper might 'turn', thus needing to be put down.

Luke watched the helicopter and the man on the ground near it. The man just lay there and did not move. Smoke continued to rise from the crippled chopper's engine. He could see no movement at all near the wreckage, and nobody emerged from it yet.

Luke returns his attention to the other side take care of some more crawlers, but he intends to periodically check up on what happens at the downed chopper.

The six remaining crawlers had gotten a little closer, but there was still time to finish them off.

(Go ahead and shoot at one. Any hit to the head will be a kill.)

Five of the creatures were left. When Luke glanced back at the wreckage, he saw a motorcycle stopped between it and the man he saw earlier. A man and a young woman in leather jackets rode it, and the woman climbed off and knelt over the man from the helicopter. A moment later, he began to stir.

(Roll Spot Hidden to see more details.)

(Yes, the man lying on the ground near the wrecked chopper is the one who stirred. Luke can't make out any additional details.)

(That roll already presumed Luke was using his scope to try to make out more details. That's all he sees unless he's going to wait. Also, don't forget I need a couple of rolls for Bob in Over.)

The man got up off the ground with the woman's help and began speaking to the man in the leather jacket. Then both men ran over to the helicopter, the injured man limping a bit. They climbed inside, vanishing behind the curtain of smoke. Another man in a leather jacket who looked similar to the first one ran through the grass and caught up to the woman. He unslung a rifle and headed for the chopper as well.

Luke presumes that since the leatherclad people are armed, they'll take care of it. Not to mention that the USAF snipers probably have eyes on. He turns back to shooting crawlers. (if already up close, he'll switch to shotgun or pistol)

Luke could hear more shooting coming from the motel roof as well as from inside the wreckage itself as he turned back to take aim at one of the five crawlers through his scope.

(Luke, you still have a shot coming from last round that you didn't take, and you can shoot again this round, so you can shoot twice right now.)

The gunfire at the motel and the helicopter died down and ceased. Luke concentrated on shooting his targets.

(Counting the last two rounds and this one, you now have up to seven shots, if you need that many, to get five hits and finish off the crawlers.)

Luke easily finishes off the crawlers and does a weapon's check (including X+1 reload).

Luke easily finished off the last of the crawling zombies, swapped out his partially used magazine for a full one, and inspected his weapon. Everything was still in good working order. The rifle would have to be cleaned eventually, but it didn't need it yet. In fact, it would run out of ammo before that would become necessary - he was down to 111 7.62mm NATO rounds in all. He was also starting to feel fatigued - he had been up here shooting for nearly three hours.

The plume of smoke rising from the wreck was getting thicker and blacker, and Luke could clearly see flames licking at the metal. Five men were still near it, and they were very hurriedly getting away, running towards the motel and the people gathered in the parking lot.

The fire expanded until it reached the leaking fuel from the helicopter's fuel tank, and the wreckage went up in a massive fireball, spraying flaming debris all around. Fortunately everyone was well clear of it and nobody was injured further. The chopper continued to burn, and secondary explosions from ammo cooking off followed.

Gunfire also erupted from the motel, but Luke could not see from his position who was shooting or what their targets were.

Luke figures they're just blasting more zombies and goes back to his little vantage point overlooking the plains. He sits down to take a rest while still looking out for suspicious movement.

Looking back to the east, Luke could see that the horde coming from that direction was now about a mile and a third from the ruined diner.

(If you want to start shooting at them, you have five combat rounds. However, at this range you would be firing at 1/4 skill, with the -5% penalty applied after your skill is quartered. Since ammo is limited, you may prefer to wait. When they get within one mile, your skill will only be halved. When they get within half a mile, you will be able to use your full skill.)

Luke gets back up with a grunt and turns to the motel. He lets out a sharp whistle in the hope of getting the attention of the USAF snipers, or alternatively other USAF personnel.

The snipers continued to shoot at targets to the west of the motel. If they had heard Luke's whistle over the noise of their own gunfire, they gave no indication. The shooting continued, and it sounded like more people were firing now. The flaming wreck continued to burn, the fire spreading and the black smoke thickening.

Luke saw a group of six zombies come into view near the flaming wreckage of the helicopter, moving slowly. They were closing in on the northwest corner of the parking lot and had only become visible beyond the edge of the motel now. The intensity of the gunfire coming from the motel increased.

(Luke, roll Sanity. Presuming you remain sane, you have five combat rounds if you wish to fire at them.)

"Hear the trumpets, hear the pipers
One hundred million angels singing
Multitudes are marching to the big kettledrum
Voices calling, voices crying
Some are born and some are dying
It's Alpha and Omega's kingdom come"
Luke sings as he shoots the incoming zombies, quoting Johnny Cash's 'The Man Comes Around', rather than the Book of Revelations.

"And I heard a voice in the midst of the four beasts
And I looked and behold, a pale horse
And his name that sat on him was Death
And Hell followed with him."
he adds while overlooking the carnage he left behind.

Luke saw the zombies he shot fall, and gunfire from the motel brought down the sixth one. Soon the shooting stopped, and then the convoy of motorcycles and light trucks he had seen approach from the south earlier came around the northern side of the motel and into the parking lot on the east side. Some of them parked there, and the rest continued eastwards, towards the diner.

(Luke, roll Spot Hidden.)

Luke watched four people climb the ladders on the east side of the motel to the balcony - a man and a woman in flight suits, then Lt. Blanco and Zorie Spooner. The old female biker parked near the ladders and also started up. The SUV and the truck with the horse trailer remained in the parking lot. All of the other vehicles approached the garage.
