IC-OVER-Wild Blue Yonder(Bo/Erica/Stephanie/Hausmann/Bob)

As the afternoon gets underway, the survivors from the T-Bone have been split up. The helicopter group must land at an airfield halfway to Omaha for refueling. Those still on the surface try desperately to defend the motel, while those trapped underground fight for their lives as they search for a way out.

IC-OVER-Wild Blue Yonder(Bo/Erica/Stephanie/Hausmann/Bob)

Post by Mr. Handy »

Z-Day - 2:10 PM Central Time - In the helicopter, 5 miles west of the airfield
The flight had passed mostly in silence, the chopper speeding east towards Omaha. Erica Spears and Bob Larkin had concentrated on making the flight as safe and swift as possible. Every so often they tried to contact the second airfield closer to Kearney, but each time they got no response. In the back seat, Stephanie Bridges continued to type rapidly, focused on her task to the exclusion of all else. Dr. Brigetta Hausmann and Bo Richards sat on either side of her, watching her work. Bo didn't understand what she was doing, but he knew it was important and admired her greatly. Dr. Hausmann clearly did understand, nodding on occasion with satisfaction at Stephanie's progress.

"We're almost to the first airfield," announced Erica. "Let me contact the tower again." She spoke into the microphone. "This is NSP Seven-Eight-Romeo to tower. Do you copy? Over."

After a slight delay, the female air traffic controller she had spoken to earlier came back on: "This is the tower, I read you. Over."

"Is your location still secure? Over."

"Yeah, we're still good here. What's your ETA? Over."

"We're only a few minutes out now. Over."

Bob give his weapons a quick rundown, making sure they are loaded properly (mag+1) and on safe. He then switches his attention to helping Erica put down the bird.

"You're cleared to land," replied the woman. "Use helipad 1, it's just to the west of the control tower. See you on the ground. Over."

"Thanks," said Erica Spears. "Spears out." She disconnected and continued flying eastwards. The airfield became just visible in the distance. A row of hangars stretched out across the northern part of the field, and beyond them was a lake. South of the hangars stood the tall control tower, and east of that were some other buildings. Runways stretched out west and south of the tower.

"I'm almost halfway done," said Stephanie.

"Wunderbar, Stephanie," said Dr. Hausmann. "Keep up the good work."

Bo smiled at her.

Bob's pistols were both fully loaded with an extra bullet in the chamber and with safeties on. He had 48 rounds remaining for the 9mm and 70 for the .45.

Bob taps the old 1911's magazines (making sure the bullets are alligned properly) and prepares to assist with the landing.

The helicopter flew onwards, and soon the airfield became visible to the east.

The control tower stood some sixty feet tall, higher than any of the other buildings, and the helipad they were to land at was just twenty yards from its front door. Runways stretched out to the west and south of the tower. Fifty or so yards to the east of the tower stood a row of smaller buildings. Another row of five buildings, these easily identified as hangars, stood a hundred yards north of the tower. The easternmost hangar was fairly close to the northernmost of the small buildings on the east. Fifty yards to the north of the hangars was a large lake over a mile wide.

As the helicopter drew nearer to the airfield, Bob could make out more details. There was someone in a military uniform with a rifle lying flat on the roof of the control tower, which made an ideal sniper's nest. Whoever it was seemed to be using the radar dish as cover and concealment, but it was not enough to hide from Bob's sharp vision. He could also make out a police cruiser parked to the north of the largest hangar and a small flatbed truck by the buildings east of the tower. A line of what appeared at first to be stacked sandbags stood a short distance east of the tower, facing the east, but as he got closer he realized that they were in fact mangled and ruined dead bodies.

"Sniper on the roof of the tower... And a shitload of dead bodies..." Bob grunts, on one side happy that the people down there seem to know what they're doing, but also fearing that they might turn that knowledge against the helicopter crew...

Erica Spears looked where Bob pointed. "Thanks, I see 'em too," she said. "We're making our final approach now. It should be a smooth landing, but make sure you're strapped in tight just in case."
