Background:
Alexander was born in a simple russian family in Saint Petersburg. From very early on, he exhibited signs of greater than average intelligence, but due to the economical situation, his parents could never send him to the proper schools where he would be able to reap the benefits of his smarts. Instead, he grew up in state schools, but as he reached maturity he had a solid education behind him, as he had always gone the extra mile by hitting the books, rather than going out to play with schoolmates.
Once graduated, he moved on to medschool. Paying his way by doing an endless series of odd jobs and even volunteering for experimental medical procedures. He became fascinated with micro-organisms and specialised in Microbiology. Being an exceptional researcher, he was sent to the USA as part of a state funded exchange program with Johns Hopkins and during this time he succeeded in finishing a Ph.D. in Immunology.
As soon as he returned, he was offered a research position in Siberia, where he learnt to deal with the cold. He never felt any disadvantages from the isolation due to his (odd) character. Even inside the close community of the research facility, he remained a loner.
Currently his work varies from research for a group of private firms based outside of Moscow and expeditions throughout Africa (Ebola, Cholera,...) and Asia (Avian flu H5N1, Sars,...). During these expeditions he has garnered a reputation for being quickly on the ground after an outbreak and for thinking outside the box. Not all of his unusual ideas were always appreciated by other physicians and scientists, the local extermination of certain potential germ carriers (chimpanzees) during a particularly vicious outbreak of Ebola being an illustration of that fact.
During these expeditions, he has also learnt to shoot (a necessity, as he often traveled in unsafe areas) and now also uses that skill to tranquilize potentially infected animals for research purposes. This allows him to get greater insight on the way the infections are spread.
Personality:
Alexander is an introverted and rather shy man who often shuns human contact in preference of research and books. This however does not prevent him from being a competent doctor whenever he has to examine or treat people. Nor does he shy away from an intellectual debate.
It actually appears that he's quite sure of himself in areas close to his field of expertise, but it is the standard (and trivial?) human contact and interaction he seems ill at ease with. He seems rather innept at making conversation for the sake of conversation.

Flaws:
- Allergic skin rash on extremities (APP -1): While his allergies are not manifested through respiratory problems, sneezing or a running nose, they cause a rather ugly rash on his arms and legs. Other than some itching and being somewhat dry, it does not cause any serious problems. But it's not the most pleasant thing to look at...
- Flashbacks: Being in an unsavory line of work and having worked in many countries, Alexander has his fair share of bad memories. Certain stimuli could cause a flashback to rather unpleasant memories of Cholera, Ebola and so on.
Bonus:
+ Bi-Lingual: English is the language of science (even more so than Latin). Alexander realised that very early on, and of course studying abroad helped more than a bit...
+ Quicksleeper: Coming from a less than fortunate family and being raised in Russia in a less than favorable time, Alexander had to study his way through medschool, while at the same time working a lot of odd jobs. This left very little time for sleeping. To help cough up enough cash, he enrolled in various medical test programs, including in a sleep depravation program which would later be used on Russian Spetznaz units. He has learnt to skip various unneeded parts of sleep, allowing him to get a complete sleep in 3 (uninterrupted) hours time when needed. Prolongued use (months) of this ability will however cause mental problems and physical breakdown.
